Saturday afternoon goes easy on our New Year’s Day hangovers by throwing us just three afternoon kick-offs.

All the attention was due to be focused on Turf Moor with Liverpool – sporting their fab four – the visitors. But the injury to Mohamed Salah, coupled with the return of Jurgen Klopp’s rotation policy, has markedly reduced interest in this game.

With Philippe Coutinho out of the squad – also through injury according to Klopp – and Roberto Firmino starting on the bench, it’s only Sadio Mane from the elite attacking four who makes the starting line-up.

That could find many Fantasy managers willing for a clean sheet for the home side, with Burnley defender Ben Mee and goalkeeper Nick Pope part of 15.3% and 7.2% of squads respectively.

Elsewhere Leicester City will take on Huddersfield Town at the King Power Stadium without Jamie Vardy. The striker misses out with a groin problem, while Riyad Mahrez bids to maintain form that has supplied a goal or an assist in seven of his previous eight Gameweeks.

Finally, Stoke City host Newcastle United in a low-impact encounter in Fantasy terms. Shaqiri – with 6.7% ownership – is the most popular active player on show.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

First transfer of the year – Adrien Silva to Leicester

    HISTORY:
The Portuguese had been linked to Sporting since his 14 years of age, making his debut for the main team on 08-17-2007 at the age of 18. In 10/11 and 11/12 seasons he went on loan to two clubs: for the Israelites of Maccabi Haifa and for the Portuguese club Académica. In all other seasons he played for Sporting, becoming a favorite of lions supporters.

STATS FROM LAST 4 SEASONS (don’t include domestic Cup competitions):
In the 14/15 season, Adrien made 30 games (27 as a starter) in the Liga NOS, playing 2269 minutes where he scored 8 goals (4 from the penalty spot), finishing the season in the 3rd place of the Portuguese League. In disciplinary terms, he saw the yellow card 13 times (top of the league) and the red card for 1 time. In UEFA club competitions, Sporting CP were third in the UEFA Champions League group stage, where Adrien scored twice and saw the yellow card 1 time in all 6 matches. It was then eliminated in the Europa League.
In the 15/16 season, the Portuguese midfielder made 29 games (28 as a starter) in the Liga NOS where, for 3 points, he failed to beat Lisbon's rival SL Benfica for the 1st place. At this time Adrien played 2344 minutes, where he scored 8 goals (once again 4 from the penalty spot) and made 6 assists. In disciplinary terms, the Portuguese saw the yellow card for 12 times and the red card for 1 time. In European competitions, Sporting failed to overtake CSKA Moskow in the qualifying round and was relegated to the Europa League. In this competition, Sporting were eliminated in the group stage where the Portuguese midfielder played all 6 games (4 as a starter), where he was shown the yellow card twice.
In the 16/17 season, Adrien Silva made 27 games (26 as a starter) for the Liga NOS, where he helped Sporting to reach the 3rd place, totaling 2160 minutes, where he scored 4 goals (2 from the penalty spot), made 2 assists and suffered 6 yellow cards. In these 27 games, the midfielder made a total of 40 shots (15 inside the area), 1479 passes (1247 successful, of which 1180 were short passes - 9th best of the League) and 21 key passes. In defensive terms, Adrien made 84 tackles (8th best in the league), 43 interceptions, 2 blocked shots and 61 fouls (8th best in the league). Adrien also played in the Champions League, where Sporting was 4th and last place in their group with only 1 win. The Portuguese scored 1 goal, made 1 assist and suffered 2 yellow cards in 5 matches played (4 as a starter).
In this season, the captain of Sporting CP, made only 3 games to count for the Liga NOS, playing 224 minutes, where he scored 1 goal, made 1 assist and suffered 1 yellow card (these last three numbers in the only game that the Portuguese played the full 90 minutes, in a victory of his team by 5-0). In these 3 games, the midfielder made a total of 4 shots (2 at goal and 1 inside the area that resulted in the only goal he scored), 124 passes (104 successful, of which 95 were short passes) and only 1 key pass which resulted in his only assist of the season). In defensive terms, Adrien carried out 8 tackles, 4 interceptions, 1 blocked shot and 4 fouls. In addition to these three matches for the Portuguese Championship, he also helped Sporting to reach the UEFA Champions League group stage by playing both matches against the Romanians of FC FCSB, one of whom was his last game in the green and white shirt in 23-08-2017. Since then he has not played any game due to the novel that has occurred around his transfer to Leicester City.

    STYLE OF PLAY:
As the coaches have been changing, Sporting's tactical scheme has also been changing as the Portuguese midfielder has experimented with various forms of play. In the 14/15 season, with Marco Silva in the technical command, Adrien Silva operated in the double pivot of the midfield in what, on paper, was a 4-3-3. In the following season, with Jorge Jesus as coach, he worked alongside William Carvalho in a 4-4-2, where, when the team had the ball, Adrien went higher up the the field leaving his midfielder teammate in the CDM position. In the following two seasons (16/17 and 17/18), Jorge Jesus has been playing with a tactical scheme similar to Leicester (4-4-1-1), but with totally different ways of playing, especially in what is the construction phase of the team's offensive play. Adrien continued to operate on the double midfield pivot, alongside William Carvalho, going even further when the team had the ball in his possession. The Portuguese midfielder is not a number 8 that does runs between the lines of the opposition or behind the opposition’s defensive line. He is the one who seeks to unmark these same players, always looking for a short pass. He feels comfortable when the team has the ball and likes to build the game from behind, which is why I'm particularly curious to see how it fits into a completely different game like Leicester who are continuously looking for direct passes for their attackers.

Overall, in my opinion, Adrien's best years are behind him. For many years it has been said that he could abandon Sporting and ambition for something bigger for his career, but what is certain is that he has been staying in Portugal year after year. The fact that his disciplinary side leaves much to be desired, coupled with the fact that he is obviously without rhythm, leaves me completely out of him for my Fantasy team. However, it will be curious how Claude Puel will now manage his team's penalties, since the current scorers have been somewhat fickle and Adrien Silva arrives with an interesting record in this topic.

    Happy new year, everyone 🙂
