Arsenal began the post-Sanchez era by bouncing back against champions Chelsea to book their Carabao Cup Final place against Man City.

The side has certainly been quick to move on from the departure of their star man, securing a February 25 date with City at Wembley despite conceding an early goal last night when Eden Hazard converted Pedro’s through ball.

Nacho Monreal continued his new-found attacking threat by seeing his effort from a corner bounce in off the unfortunate Antonio Rudiger to level the score before Granit Xhaka poked home the winner when he steered in Alexandre Lacazette’s deflected pass after the break.

Arsenal then held on comfortably enough as a Chelsea team who lost the in-form Willian to a hamstring injury with just 30 minutes on the clock struggled for attacking cohesion.

The victory means that the Gunners and Man City will play each other twice in the space of five days, following up their cup final clash with a league fixture at the Emirates on Thursday, March 1, which will remain part of the Gameweek 28 schedule.

That is subject to change should Pep Guardiola’s side be taken to a FA Cup fifth round replay which, in turn, requires them to win this Sunday’s fourth round tie away at Cardiff City.

There are no such complications for Arsenal, who were knocked out in the third round, and the Carabao Cup now represents their best hope of silverware this season.

But any threat of rotation ahead of the February final looks remote as they will face Spurs in Gameweek 27 a full 15 days before the first match of their Man City double-header.

Instead, coach Arsene Wenger must decide how to deploy his resources in Europe, with the Gunners in action on successive Thursday nights in the Round of 32 of the Europa League before the Cup date with City.

As a result, Arsenal will play four times in ten days from February 22 onwards – Östersunds FK at home, Man City in the cup and then the league and, finally, away at Brighton on the Sunday of Gameweek 29.

Once again, the Gunners’ manager started with a 4-1-2-3 formation but it was his switch to a wing-back set-up after the break that helped the hosts garner momentum.

Having recovered from the hamstring problem that forced him off against Crystal Palace last weekend, Monreal continues to catch the eye.

The Spaniard scored an extraordinary 16 points from just 33 minutes of action against the Eagles, thanks to a goal and two assists. Returning to play the full 90 minutes last night, he’s the third most popular transfer target in FPL over the last 24 hours, acquired by 7,600 new owners.

New signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan was cup-tied last night, while fellow midfielder Aaron Ramsey recovered from illness to take his place on the bench. The Welshman, along with Sead Kolasinac was afforded just six minutes off the bench as the Gunners shut down the tie late on.

With the Sanchez situation now put to bed, back-to-back wins will have boosted the confidence ahead of clashes with Swansea City and Everton, though the subsequent two league fixtures – against Spurs and Man City – means many may steer clear until the schedule turns far kinder in Gameweek 29.

Chelsea, meanwhile, started brightly but tailed off last night, which also adequately describes their season to date.

Deployed as a “false nine”, Hazard confirmed his recent return to form with a third goal in two starts, but Alvaro Morata again missed out with a back injury, and the loss of Willian further reduced their attacking threat.

His replacement, new signing Ross Barkley, failed to make any real impact, while a defence bolstered by the return of Andreas Christensen from a head injury failed to keep a fourth clean sheet in five matches in all competitions.

The Blues’ immediate schedule (BOU wat WBA) suggests shut-outs could well be straight back on the agenda, but the 12.6% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois in their teams might not be able to take advantage as the Belgian missed a second successive match with an ankle injury.

The hamstring problem for Willian is another concern, particularly as close to 100,000 managers have made him FPL’s second most popular Gameweek 25 purchase on the back of a 12-point display against Brighton last weekend.

Speaking post-match, Chelsea coach Antonio Conte played down the extent of Willian’s problem.

“I just spoke to the player. He said he felt a problem in his hamstring but he doesn’t think it will be a serious injury. I hope this feeling is right.”

Willian’s 9% FPL ownership will hope so, too.

Should he face a spell on the sidelines, Pedro could be called upon in a 3-4-3 against Bournemouth in Gameweek 25, though much will depend on Morata’s availability. With Chelsea facing Newcastle United in the FA Cup, we should gain further indication as to his approach for Wednesday from Sunday’s line-up.

        Something along the lines "you know our situation is dire when a crucial player gets injured and on the bench you only have Ross Barkley"

      I don't think that warrants a wildcard. I'd also say that proposed WC does not look any better, could be even worse than your current team (Not much wrong with current team).

      Francis and Chillwell? Not sure about that. Chillwell is a good shout but double up with Scmeichel?? ANd Masuaku should be prioritised over Dunk.

      Mkhitaryan is for me a wait and see at the moment. Ibe is a better option than Fraser. And why Niasse?

    Which option to pick 2 FT 0 ITB

    A. Firmino, Ota, Son -> Stones, Aguero, Shaq -4
    B. Son, Arnie -> Mahrez, Shaq
    C. Firmino, Arnie, Son -> Aguero Alrbighton Shq - 4
    D Firmino, Arnie. DLC -> Aguero, Carroll, Quarner - 4

    Pickford Speroni
    Otamendi Jones Kenny Alonso Ogbonna
    Sterling Salah Arnie Son Lingard
    Kane DLC Firmino

      A. Wait for Stones. Laporte is possible.
      B. if you like Shaqiri
      C & D. Depends completely on Aguero.

      I would suggest sorting out DLC and Arnautovic.

    Need to get out RLC and DCL. Was planing to go 3-5-2- as of next game week but Arnie's injury has ruined my planning. 0.5 ITB

    Option A:

    Pope - Elliot
    Jones - Christensen - Ogbonna - Martina - Dunk
    Sterling - Salah - Lingard - Mahrez - Arnie
    Kane - Aguero - Niasse

    Option B

    Pope - Elliot
    Jones - Christensen - Ogbonna - Martina - Dunk
    Sterling - Salah - Lingard - KDB - 4.5
    Aguero - Kane - Wilson

    Original plan was to go: KDB, DCL and RLC - Mahrez, Arnie, Niasse. (leaving 0 ITB)

    Now with Arnie's injury, I am thinking DCL to Wilson, but means I have to play 3-4-3 and have 0 ITB to replace RLC with no 4.5. alternatives.

    Do I wait for Arnie and hope he gets fit or get in Wilson in now? Need to decide before DCL price drop (which is imminent apparently)

    Thanks!

    DDG
    Otamendi, Alonso, Jones
    Salah, Sterling, Lingard, Arnie, Son
    Kane, Firmino

    (Elliot, Quaner, Mee, Mariappa)

    A) Son -> Mahrez
    B) Firmino & Son -> Aguero & Albrighton
    C) Arnie & Son -> KDB & Albrighton
    D) Arnie & Son -> Sane & Alrbighton (enough spare to upgrade Lingard to Pogba)

    Need that 3rd City Player I think....

    Cheers

      Should probably do all that you can to get in Aguero. Damage limitation, if he gets a brace or a hat trick against WBA and everyone has captained him your looking at 25+ deficit.

        Cheers. He is still a differential in my ML. I am leaning towards C or D to be honest, KDB surely better long run when Jesus returns and Sane finding form too...kind of want to hold onto Firmino if possible...

    Hello managers

    Are we looking at a wildcard for this team?

    Fab
    Jones, Alonso, Kenny, Ota
    Sterling, Arny, Lingard, Son
    Kane, Aguero

    Migs, RLC, DCL, Dunk

    My alternative is a -4 hit to take out Lingard and Arny for Salah and McArthur

    Guys, appreciate advise on what to do with that team. My concern is not having 2nd regular striker(preferred investing in alonso, rather than attack)
    1) arnie->shaq
    2)arnie ->mares
    3)Arnie and son -> mahrez and shaq for -4
    4)Arnie and dcl-> Vardy and choupo for -4

    Pope (Elliott)
    Ota Alonso Christensen ogbonna (mee)
    Salah sterling son Arnie lingard
    Kane (dcl, depoitre)

    The complaints about casuals is kinda funny. I'd say basing your decisions on template articles, a boring podcast, group think comments board, and members data is as bad as whatever it is "casuals" do.
    I prefer the pure old fashioned way to play. Love football. Watch football. Think for yourself.

      Arnie and Kane > Shaqiri and Aguero for -4?

      Allows Sterling > Sanchez(c) the following week for free

        Yes but I wouldn't lose Sterling.

      Kane + Arnie --> Firmino + Hazard

      Good moves?

        If you already have Kun and planning to do Kun > Kane 3 GW later, it sounds like good move. Risky but may worth it.

      Which teams are guaranteed no blank in 31?

      It’s just Bournemouth, Stoke, Everton, Leicester right?

        Only Stoke and Everton at the moment. Bournemouth and WBA will likely join them as WBA play Liverpool in the FA cup.

      John Terry’s Dog.
      My pub is in Ravenscourt Park. Really good food, great staff, and a nice warm vibe. Harwood Arms is good, the only pub with a star in London. It’s well worth going if only to have their scotch egg (first place on my scotch egg blog).
      Kitchen W8 is great, but not so much if you’re on your own.

      Which fodder combo?

      A) Carroll and Ayew
      B) Milli and Crouch

        I own Crouch, and he is frustrating to own.

      Adrian (CRY)
      Christensen (BOU) - Otamendi (WBA) - Jones (tot) - Holgate (LEI)
      Son (MUN) - Salah (hud) - Sterling (WBA) - Arnautovic***
      Kane (MUN) - Aguero (WBA, C)

      Elliot (BUR), Ogbonna (CRY), Niasse (LEI), RLC (whu)

      2FT. Most likely I'll do Arnie>Shaqiri. What to do with the other FT?

      A) RLC>Albrighton and play 352
      B) Niasse>Wilson and play 343
      B) Son>Mahrez and play 442
      C) Save FT, play 442 this GW and re-asses next week with 2FT and 1.1ITB.

          If you really want Mahrez, C to just get it done.
          Otherwise I'd save.

            I'm not sure. If I really wanted Mahrez I don't think I would have asked here. Temped by Mkhi or maybe even Pogba, depending how Arsenal/Utd line up now.

                Yeah same - lots of options for mid spot I'd like more recent performance info on (those you mention + Walcott, Ramsey, even Sanchez).
