This third part of our preview series for the forthcoming Fantasy Eliteserien campaign looks in detail at last season’s bottom half of the table sides, as well as the three new arrivals to the Norwegian top flight.

For more information about key players to consider and how to play the game see part one . Details of last season’s top eight sides can be found in part two.

Meanwhile, the Norwegian language version of the game can be found here here. This season the game’s creators have developed an English language version, which can be found here.

Last Season’s Bottom Half of the Table Sides

Stabæk

We start this latest team by team preview with a look at Stabæk’s young charges. With this side’s emphasis on youth their performances can be erratic but there are gems among their ranks. Last season Ohi impressed up front and veteran Morten Skjønsberg was another to do well.

Pros: The young team profile does have some talent waiting to break out, and can provide the surprise differentials needed to provide an edge to your fantasy campaign. It helps that they have as yet not sold the second most prolific goalscorer of last season, Ohi, and have also kept their best attacking midfielders.

Cons: The side’s lack of experience can be found out at times. They have also lost the influential Tortol Lumanza-Lembi before this season. He leaves a huge gap to fill.

Notable players: Ohi Omoijuanfo (FWD, 9.0), Luc Kassi (MID, 6.5), Tonny Brochmann (MID, 7.0), Andreas Hanche-Olsen (DEF, 4.5), Jeppe Moe (DEF, 4.5)

Advice: If Omoijuanfo stays at Stabæk he will be a solid pick. Kassi and Brochmann will be worth keeping an eye on, especially if they’re reasonably priced.

FK Haugesund

This is the Norwegian leagues closest equivalent to Burnley. Last season they kept 12 clean sheets last, a tally only bettered by champions Rosenborg (14). This resilience at the back is needed due to their lack of goalscorer, with the third lowest number of goals last season. provided the third least amount of goals. Christian Grindheim from Vålerenga has been recruited to improve their attacking threat, but with no other significant moves another Burnley style season awaits.

Pros: The team has a bit of a “boring” Fantasy-profile, and prices reflect this, offering a complete set of mid-to-low priced options in all areas.

Cons:  A lack of goals in pre-season friendlies suggests that they will continue to struggle up front.  Defence looks the best source of points, but if the clean sheet tally drops they are best swerved.

Notable players: Frederik Gytkjær (DEF, 6.5), Alexander Stølås (DEF, 5.5), Fredrik Pallesen Knudsen (DEF, 5.0), Per Kristian Bråtveit (GKP, 5.0)

Advice: Haugesund offer a wealth of kindly priced defensive options, as long as you can live with the the lack of explosive returns. It is worth looking at a possible out-of-position run in midfield or the wing for left-back Stølås. The veteran midfielder Grindheim is another to monitor.

Tromsø

This side looked doomed  halfway through last season at the bottom of the table but a change of head coach sparked them into life, securing their top flight status and unearthing some Fantasy gems. Defender Simen Wangberg plowed into a season dreamteam place at the back, while Gjermund Aasen proved essential to the Tromsø attack. In addition, former Blackburn man Morten Gamst-Pedersen rolled back the years, racking up a league high 11 assists.

Pros: The team is on the rise, and the new coach has finally had a pre-season to get his ideas and formations in place. Some of the key figures have signed on for new contracts, giving the team a welcome stability going into the new season.

Cons:  However the departure of striker Lehne-Olsen is a blow, and replacing him could prove to be key as Aasen and Gamst-Pedersen need a receiver for their creative brilliance. Going into a new season, Mushaga Bakenga will likely be heavily adjusted away from his Rosenborg pricepoint, making him a possibility, provided he can avoid further injuries.

Notable players: Mushaga Bakenga (FWD, 7.5), Gjermund Aasen (MID, 7.0), Morten Gamst Pedersen (MID, 5.5) Simen Wangberg (DEF, 5.5), Lasse Nilsen (DEF, 5.0)

Advice: A central defender at Tromsø is unlikely to be first choice for a Fantasy team, perhaps instead  look to Gjermund Aasen as a prime midfield option. Gamst-Pedersen, Bakenga, and a possible out-of-position Lasse Nilsen look enticing differentials.

Lillestrøm

Last season’s cup-winners hold the record for the longest uninterrupted stay in the Norwegian top flight, but have struggled to maintain their position for some years. Like Rosenborg, they celebrated 100 years as a club last season, and managed to pick up a cup trophy for their party. They did, however, have a very bumpy season, largely marred by failed striker purchases, a doping suspension to their goalkeeper, and a lot of players shuffling around out of position.

Pros: This team proved to be a goldmine for out-of-position players last season, and there could be more of the same this time around.

Cons: This team was all over the place last season, and have proven tough to predict. That lack of stability does not translate too well into Fantasy picks.

Notable players: Thomas Lehne-Olsen (FWD, 8.0), Erling Knudtzon (MID, 8.5), Aleksander Melgalvis (MID, 5.5), Fredrik Krogstad (MID, 5.5),

Advice: Keep a close eye on out-of-position players here. Other than that, set-piece chief Fredrik Krogstad will likely be a possible value-pick for your midfield, and all eyes are on Lehne-Olsen and his prospects as the striker Lillestrøm have been missing.

Sandefjord

This team is known for trying to be different at all costs, as the only Norwegian top flight side to field a 3-5-2 formation. This has cost them dearly with relegation in recent years, although their dare to be different approach did ensure they renewed their seat at the top table of Norwegian football last time around.

Pros: The team’s do-or-die ethos guarantees they give it all for every inch of pitch and every tackle, resulting in the strong chance of hard earned returns in any given match.

Cons: The man responsible for both the formation and the fighting spirit of the team, head coach Lars Bohinen, has left to join newly relegated Aalesund. We have little insight into what the new coach will bring to the table. It is also worth noting that the give-all attitude does take its toll on the players, making fatigue or injury a real possibility early.

Notable players: Flamur Kastrati (FWD, 6.5), Abdoulaye Seck (DEF, 5.0), Joachim Olsen Solberg (DEF, 5.0)

Advice: The uncertainty around Sandefjord makes them a side to monitor at first. Although it is worth noting that from Gameweek 2 they go on a monster run of kind fixtures, so be ready to jump on any likely form-player emerging. Kastrati, if nailed on, could be a strong budget third striker option, especially as he has penalties  in his locker and a reputation for tenacity on the pitch.

The Promoted Sides

Bodø/Glimt

This side are another of Norway’s traditional 4-3-3 teams, with close ties to Rosenborg inspiring similar play-styles and even player exchanges over the years. They were the powerhouse in the second tier last season, topping the division with an amazing 81 goals in 30 games, with their top scorer Kristian Opseth registering a record 28 successful strikes.

Pros: As a newly promoted team, the prices are likely to be low for players here. Given their goalscoring record in the second tier last season, and the disparity in quality being quite small in Norwegian football, there could be a raft of budget gems among their ranks.

Cons:  Newly promoted teams are not known for their attacking threat so there is a danger that last season’s swashbuckling displays could be curtailed. Promotion also tends to mean shifts in the squad, and we look forward to seeing how that plays out.

Notable players: Kristian Opseth (FWD, 7.5), Ulrik Saltnes (MID, 6.5), Trond Olsen (MID, 6.5)

Advice: Opseth is the one to watch in the upcoming campaign, but is recovering from surgery and still not in optimal shape, although he is playing now. There is also some expectation tied to veteran winger Trond Olsen, who is listed as a midfielder. Ulrik Saltnes provides a box-to-box midfield option on the budget side of things.

IK Start

Start return to the top flight with big ambitions  but it remains to be seen whether these will be realised. They are another to opt for a 4-3-3 formation.

Pros: They have significantly beefed up their squad this time around, giving enticing options for Fantasy managers. Espen Børufsen at 29 is one of a few experienced players at Start, having played for the club since 2006 and consistently provided goals and assists. New signing Kevin Kabran, with a decent track record from the Swedish second tier, could be one to monitor, while 17-year-old creative midfielder Tobias Christensen could emerge as a budget pick. Centre back Simon Larsen is also one of few experienced players in the squad, and he’s a decent threat from set pieces.

Cons: As previously stated, there is some fear of ambition backlash here, and both real world enthusiasm and Fantasy patience will evaporate quickly if they fail to live up to their own pre-season hype. They have a young and inexperienced squad, with some of their key players being 17-20 years old, so it’s hard to tell who will step up. There is also some doubt as to who is going to start up front and score the goals.

Notable players: Kristjan Floki Finnbogason (FWD, 6.0), Kevin Kabran (MID, 6.5), Aron Sigurdarson (MID, 6.0), Tobias Christensen (MID, 5.5), Simon Larsen (DEF, 5.0), Elliot Käck (DEF, 4.5)

Advice: Keep an eye on starting lineups. Start could be the place to go for budget options, and have an on paper decent opening league run.

Ranheim

This semi-pro team made the top flight through the playoffs. It seems likely they will struggle to make the grade and are expected to be fighting relegation for much of the campaign. This team is something of a curiosity with a minimal budget, a handful of local talent, and facilities akin to English non-league.

Pros: With the “bottom of the barrel” expectations tied to this team, their players are certainly affordable and could provide some nice bench fodder options. Defender Erik Tønne is an out of position prospect to consider as he is likely to be fielded on the wing.

Cons: There is little or no expectations of steady returns in any position on this team.

Notable players: Michael Karlsen (FWD, 6.0), Mads Reginiussen (MID, 6.0), Erik Tønne (DEF, 4.5).

Advice: Don’t expect anything in the way of returns from this team. Making selections here should purely be an exercise in saving funds, with the outside chance of an occasional strong return.

I'm starting to feel pretty settled with my team

    Barli, Lenes
    Meling, Sarr, Kitolano, Tønne, Grorud
EUA, Jradi, Gjertsen, Sigurdarson, Sæter (?)
    Bendtner, Skålevik, Opseth (?)

This is the first time that I want to go with a cheap keeper for a dross team with the backup keeper as cover. Ranheim have strong fixtures the start of the season, they are good defensively and they don't have many players to take bonus points away from Barli. Importantly Barli is also a strong goal keeper.

Yeah, I like the idea. I'm planning on fielding Tønne for the first few gameweeks though, so a double up is to much for me. I'm on Hansen as my defensive Rosenborg cover to save some money.

Really like the Sæter pick, can't find the extra 0.5 at the moment.

            Where does saeter play?

Brynhildsen's only 18, so could break through the team. At the moment he's not likely to start every week though.

Same could be said about Hou Sæter, just turned 20, but closer to the team. They used him as a CAM in a 4231 last preseason came, and he had 1 goal and 1 assist. Could be used at CM/CDM as well, and not 100% nailed on, but I think he could have a big season.

I have been reading all three articles and their comments all afternoon and this is what I have for now:

    Linde - Karlstrom
    Rasmussen - Parr - Teniste - Kitolano - Grorud
    EUA - Koomson - Zachariassen - Åsen - Vetlesen
    Bendtner - Stokke - Amang

Also 1.0 ITB so I can be more flexible with my moves in the first weeks.

    Some comments from me:
Last season I started without Bendtner and that turned out well but this season I am not as brave and he was really good for me in the second half of last season so I am getting him. Molde's fixtures do look very nice to start the season so Linde looks like a really good choice. I was keen on getting Wormgoor but I guess he's injured? Teniste at the same price would do the job. I prefer EUA to Jradi based on what I remember from last season but it's probably similar to Eriksen/Alli situation with EUA as Eriksen and Jradi as Alli, I guess?

Not very sure on remaining members of my midfield and Amang. Happy to hear any suggestions. Do I have any rotation worries, for example? Or could I have better value for a player?

There is one final pre-season article waiting for approval, so should be here soon.

No major worries in your team, only outside uncertainties in Amang, Kitolano and Grorud, but very very minor ones. They should all start in GW1 we think...

I really like your team, the defenders/keepers look rock solid and well spent money

Maybe have a punt on some front players from Start ?

Sigurdarson (Start) at home against his old club in the first match and with ok fixtures following
Same with Finnbogason from same club whitch have done pretty well in pre-season

Thanks. Reckon Finnbogason would perform better than Amang? I'm probably a little bit skeptical about promoted teams until they show they belong in the top level.

Amang is a big risk, but also has a high ceiling IMO. I can't decide if I'll roll with safe picks like Ohi, Lehne Olsen, Fardal Opseth or Stokke, or take a punt on Amang. Very likely to start GW1, but might find the bench very soon if he doesn't perform.

    Zachariassen & Kone or Kassi & Finnbogasson? Or Brochmann & a 5.5 attacker? It's so hard (-:

Kassi only played ca. 1600 minutes last season. Do you think he will get more playing time this year?

    1. Niemi
      • 11 Years
      7 years, 9 months ago

Kassi would have played more if he wasn't injured for 1/3 of the season. This year it seems like he might not be a starter in gameweek 1 though! Stabæk started Hou Sæter over him in the final friendly and Hou Sæter did really well. Kassi came on for a pretty bad cameo, so don't think he'll be back in the team for GW1.. Sadly, as I like him as a Fantasy pick.

I'm a bit wary of Zachariassen as well. He did really well last year, but will most likely play as a CM this season (played both as a winger and CM last year). Underlying stats suggest he might have been slightly over performing, so not 100% sure if he could keep him up.. Although that's probably why I never got him last year and missed out on all his points.

Anyway, there's a new article out tomorrow (most likely) where we post our thoughts on many players (including budget picks from 7.0 and down)

He went the second half on last season on loan at Start (who are now promoted) and scored 10 goals in 11 games. 10 in 18 and 12 in 29 for Nest-Sotra as well on the second tier (they were one of the worst teams on that level). He has a good goal scoring record for them in lower leagues as well, so he definitely has goals in him. The question is can he do this at the highest level in Norway?

Ho Hum. I do not get on here much so must have missed all that promotion for the other league sign up apparently and signed up for the wrong league.

Haha, maybe we should have kept the old one instead! The "correct" league is the one we have included in our articles. Sorry for all the trouble.

Liked my last draft but couldn't help tweaking, thoughts?

                McDermott (Vaikla)
                Wangberg, Kack, Gabrielsen (Kitolano, Glesnes)
EUA, Jradi, Gamst Pedersen, Ifeanyi Mathew (Sæter)
                Lord, Lehne Olsen, Ohi

                Thanks

Personally I don't like Matthew as a fantasy option and I do think everyone need a Rosenborg defender in their team.

Yeah, thanks. Saw it a while ago, but forgot to mention. Definitely an improvement, although it's still every 2 yellow after the first 4.

So an suspension after 4, 6, 8, 10 yellows etc.

Ok bit risky then. That really stuffs up my squad as wanted Brann attacker & Koomson's 2m more.

Probably I'll downgrade Adegbenro to get Lehne Olsen, then.
Any news on EUA, Niemi? He's my preferred choice but I know he didn't play the last pre-season game and I can't find any further information.

Hansen + Bendtner is what I'm currently on. Monitoring Helland and Adegbenro for now.

Yes. Adegbenro LW and Helland RW. De Lanlay and Levi should get a few minutes, but not going to displace any of them at the moment.

Anybody else considering a start double? Among the best starting fixtures, seem low prices and media seem to have some believe. Nettavisen tip them in 8th and guess VG have them in 9th.

They have some decent options. 4.5s at the back, Larsen at 5.0 on penalties, Christensen at 5.5 as a attacking CM on set pieces, dangerous wingers on 6.0 and 6.5 and a cheap starting ST at 6.0. One is enough for me, but I could see the case for two if you'd like a punt.

I expect so, but it seems like a minor injury for Skålevik so I wouldn't go there. Might even make the game on Saturday.

Karadas and Barmen could start as well, but expecting Johansen to start if Skålevik is out.

We'll most likely have Brann's lineup before deadline.

I like it, except for the double 4.0 defenders and Acosta. Okay goal threat, but card magnet. Rather have Teniste if Wormgoor is out.

Thanks. I’m 50/50 between Acosta and Teniste. Was thinking Acosta had greater goal threat and bonus potential. Would get Wormgoor, but it does not look like he will be ready.

Apparently Wormgoor was supposed to be out for 2-3 weeks, and on Monday he had been out for 2 weeks. Not too far away I think.

Tempted to just keep him on my bench if he does play in gameweek 1, as I think he'll be ready for gameweek 2. Could backfire though with price drops.

I’ll reconsider Mathew. Biggest reason I have him is because I think he will get a lot of bonus points as he is one of the most hyped players in the league.

Indeed. He did well last year though, but he's more expensive this year. I might be wrong, but I see more value in picks like Nguen, Åsen, Sigurdarson, Kabran ++ at that price.

Matthew is a brilliant player though.

On v.42 now - any thoughts would be welcome. Am I too light in defence?

                                  Hansen - Jonsson
                                  Parr - Remmer - Tonne - Kitolano - Grorud
Jradi - Koomson - Anders Konradsen - Hussain - Vetlesen
Bendtner - Mortensen - Lehne Olsen

If it means anything, my defence is even lighter.

Jonsson missed out all the friendlies, so I think he's injured. Would go with Maric instead, or a nonplaying 4.0 GK.

Thanks, Niemi. I'll look at that.
Hard to fit in all of the big hitting midfielders so have sacrificied and gone slightly bigger up top. Will be a problem if some of the 10+ mids start hitting early on.

I had Jonsson as my second keeper for a long while pre-season, and now I'm submitting myself for a flogging for it... not the best choice..... look to Lillestrøm and Maric as an option there, or maybe McDermott at KBK.

Not really too light in defence, got to wait for some options to crystalise as well, but not too sure about Remmer, there are still some doubts as to how Molde will line up for the season (Daaaamn youuuu Sooolskjææær).

Liking the rest of your team, Hussain and Konradsen are punts though, nailed starters but we're speculating when it comes to Konradsen getting more returns this season, and Hussain we once again run into unpredictable solskjær-selections.

I'd say as long as Kitolano is playing for Odd, look at him as a 6.0 defender. He's playing in one of the better defences, and he's quite attacking so could see some offensive returns as well.

We'll have a few suggestions for midfielders at 7.0 +/- ish in our last season preview article, which should be out today.

Has the tactic been discussed of playing either the attacking or defensive chip in GW1, then WCing in GW2? You could pick a team solely with the chip in mind for one week - the only real chance of doing this as cannot play a chip the same GW as a WC otherwise.

Some talks of this, personally I don't like it.... it's mid-winter here in Norway, the pitches will be so-so and the football not too stable, so I don't like that risk. Don't like the early wildcard either, transfer window still open until just after GW3.

Possibility, but results can be so random on any given gw that I'm not considering it yet.
Plus don't think gw1 fixtures suit all out defence or attack.

Thanks both - Must say I am tempted as seems like it could be fun and am struggling picking a "normal" team at the moment with my limited knowledge which would be boosted after GW1. Has anyone looked to see if GW1 is traditionally a low or high goalscoring GW? If it is low for example, I may be tempted to play the defence one. Will also give me a week to look at which 3 Rosenborg I want whilst avoiding one of their worst fixtures of the season, and nicely boost my TV!

Kitolano - the best 4.5 option. Looks like he's nailed on at LB for Odd
Tønne - 4.5 defender playing in the front 3 for Ranheim
Haakenstad - nailed 4.5 option from Lillestrøm. I expect more from Lillestrøm in both ends this year.
Nilsen - 5.0 defender who might play in the front 3 for Tromsø this season

Many thanks for this. Kitolano it is most likely then.

I agree on LSK, think they will be a nice surprise this year.

Undecided between Stolas & BRA def.
Skalevik & EUA depend on lineup (hopefully).

                                                but who´s your 2 keeper ?
i would not dobble up on Haugesund in defence
My choice is Linde (Molde) + 4.0mill keeper = 9.5 mill

Thanks. Missed that - 4m filler (Karlstrom atm).

Haugesund. I'm not convinced it's worth spending more on a GK in Eliteserien (Hansen/odd/brann aside if affordable). Picking for clean sheets is tough. Bratveit has 2/3 cs against eliteserien teams in friendlies, so that'll do I think (odd & kbk, conceded to iks at home). Stolas is just because I think he's good from watching, takes corners, probably OOP. Linde certainly has better opening fixtures, but 0.5m more.

Yes, looks okay. Don't like the Haugesund double up at the back, don't think they will be as strong this season and not the best fixtures. Rather get a Brann defender.

Need to have a think. See that hardly anyone has Haugesund def, and more likely that I'm wrong than everybody else is wrong.

I haven't seen many teams on here including Mortensen... any reasons?

People are unsure as Sarpsborg have so many new players (takes time getting them to play as a team perhaps?), pluss the 2 new arrivals Agger and Schwartz look sharp and people are looking at who gets the nod there. With Rosenborg first game they are taking their time to scope it I think...

Personally - hoping Agger/Schwartz become an option for cheaper. He was quite consistent but can't recall ever more than 1G a game - unlikely to fall far behind not owning for a while.

Lindberg started last season really well and Diatta ended it in great form, I think whoever partners Mortensen could well be better value than him.

He's a safe pick, but personally finding more value in 6.5-8.0 strikers. Rather have Ohi at 9.0 too.
