Mohamed Salah delivers once again both for Liverpool and his huge Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ownership, while the million-plus managers who instead handed the armband to Harry Kane just about get away with their decision.

Salah was the most-captained player for a third successive Gameweek, with 1.5 million managers rewarded with the prolific Egyptian’s sixth goal from his last five starts as the Reds saw off Newcastle 2-0.

He beat Kane both for popularity and, yet again for points, by scoring eight to the Spurs striker’s modest five, but it could have been more emphatic had a late, late penalty appeal gone in Salah’s favour.

Then again, James Milner was on the pitch by that juncture, so he could well have taken the spot-kick anyway, while replays showed any offence probably took place outside the area.

Salah, almost incredibly, has now blanked in just one of his last 11 Gameweek starts, although he once again failed to receive any bonus for his efforts today and during this latest six-goal spree, he’s been awarded just five extra points.

That, however, is a minor gripe when considering a man who is well over 50 points better off than any other player in FPL.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain marked his third successive start in central midfield by setting up Salah’s opener to make it back-to-back assists for the England man.

He’s also been involved in seven goals over his last 11 starts as he continues to adapt well to life at Liverpool.

There was no goal for Roberto Firmino, although he kept his 42.1% ownership relatively happy with an assist for Sadio Mane’s clincher.

That made it two goals in as many matches for the midfielder, having endured a four-Gameweek drought previously, and the fact that Liverpool’s three-pronged attack all delivered again makes a strong case for Gameweek 31 investment in the Reds’ bounteous offensive resources.

But those who have gone for a defensive option were rewarded with a third clean sheet in five matches.

With the bonus points also being divided up between Trent Alexander-Arnold, Loris Karius and Dejan Lovren, the case for the defence remains one worthy of consideration.

Top bonus billing went to Alexander-Arnold on his fourth consecutive start, although both Joe Gomez and Nathaniel Clyne are fit and offering coach Jurgen Klopp options at right-back.

Lovren replaced Joel Matip today, making Virgil van Dijk, again, the only reliable starter at centre-half.

Kane in the shadow of Son

Spurs eased past an ultra-defensive Huddersfield 2-0, but it proved an uncomfortable match for the 1.4 million managers who handed Harry Kane the armband.

The striker didn’t want for chances – his six shots (five of which came in the box) is the most of any player in the Gameweek so far – and he produced a superb assist for the second goal.

But five points is a relatively meagre return for a captaincy stalwart as the season moves towards its climax – particularly when Salah outscored him as soon as he slotted home in the first half at Anfield.

It was the ninth time in 15 home matches that Kane has failed to find the net, although he does have 11 goals from the other six.

Instead, the undoubted star of the show was Son Heung-min, who hit a brace in an exhilarating 70-minute performance.

Having dropped to the bench at Crystal Palace in Gameweek 28, it was no surprise to see Son recalled at Wembley, where he’s now scored nine goals in his last 11 league starts.

That didn’t stop 80,000+ selling him on before today’s match; a justifiable decision perhaps given that he had blanked in the last five Gameweeks.

He lost over 207,000 owners over that dry period, but clearly remains an integral part of Spurs’ attack as Mauricio Pochettino subbed him early to presumably preserve him for the vital midweek Champions League clash with Juventus.

In contrast to the South Korean, Ben Davies went into the match as the second most popular purchase of the Gameweek, picking up 203,000 new owners.

His ninth straight start delivered a sixth clean sheet in that run and, as a defensive unit, Spurs continue to impress with Davies in the side.

They’ve conceded the fewest goals (4), kept the most clean sheets (6) and allowed the fewest shots on target (19) with Davies over those nine matches.

The Welshman has also created more chances (12) than any other defender during that spell.

Davinson Sanchez came back into the side after a spot on the bench for the midweek FA Cup replay against Rochdale, with Jan Vertonghen returning from injury to partner him at centre-half.

The Belgian promptly picked up two bonus points, with Serge Aurier earning one.

Maximum bonus went, of course, to Son, for a 16-point haul that equalled his best tally for the season, while Dele Alli provided an assist for his first haul in four starts.

As for Huddersfield, they seemed to approach the match as an exercise in keeping the scoreline respectable, with five key matches (SWA CRY new bha WAT) now to come.

But knocks for Collin Quaner and Alex Pritchard will be a concern for the club ahead of that vital run – and for those considering Terriers assets for Gameweek 31.

no harm in checking out teams of experienced pro managers like mark jonty etc especially as a regular scoutcast veiwer 😉

i have utmost respect for all of them for their hardwork. but you gotta admit marks obsession with Kane is damaging his rank.

Possibly. I don't listen to the Scoutcast, when I get time I prefer some of the other pods out there it is all just a little dull.

Nothing against any of the chaps, they are all nice fellas but I just find myself tuning out when I listen to it so I don't bother any more.

There are plenty of good fantasy managers out there. The important thing is knowing who to listen to some give better advice than others.

Is the 3 players were team rule a good rule? Seems unnecessarily restrictive given players from top teams are already expensive.

      • 10 Years

It's interesting isn't it. The pricing should be a good limiter. But the pricing can be wrong. Remember the year Leicester won the league? If there was no limit on players from one team, I think you would've seen teams overloaded with affordable Leicester players.

      1. JasonG123
        • 12 Years

Leicester were 500 to 1 to win the league at the beginning of the season. Plus were there really any good assets other than Mahrez, Vardy and a defender?

I think limiting it to two defenders/goalkeepers would with unlimited attackers would be sufficient.

      • 9 Years

I think it serves two purposes.
      1. Makes the game more challenging, i.e. if a team has great players and bargains you have to decide what combination is worth getting compared with other options available. Same reason we have a budget.

      2. Protects us against getting adversely affected by one team having an off day/game being postponed

      1. JasonG123
        • 12 Years
        8 years, 2 months ago

        (2) isn't a good reason but I agree with (1) to some extent. On the one hand it forces us to choose and make a decision which is good, on the other it is limiting our choices by making us get less players from a single team.

I don't know about a 'good' rule, but it's an FPL rule and changing it would turn it into a different game. There are other games out there without restrictions. No point in having carbon copies of each other.

I think the only time changing this rule would have a significant efect would be during the blanks or DGW's when you throw caution to teh wind. I think unrestricted we would have around 5 Liverpool players for the blank.

Don't think he's worth it. Him scoring one goal or having one assist without bonus is pretty much like owning a 6.5m midfielder for the CS point. We might as well start buying CDM with CS potential. But then again he's white British, it seems like that goes a long way for some.

Butland had two excellent games. He's on form recently.

However, Lossl and HUD have an easy streak of fixtures (at least on paper).

        So I'd pick Lossl.

If you don't have 3x Liverpool yet, you can take a look at TAA. The problem is I don't know whether he's nailed on.

                        Another option is Mariappa.

In the end of the day, if you want that much Ogbonna, go for him. But don't rush and monitor his condition.

Feels like GW37 is better for BB.

Looking at possible matches in GW34 and 37, we will probably have more options with better fixtures in 37 as compared to 34. 😮

      1. All the blank games from GW31 and GW35 are going to be re-arranged at the same time, so it is all up in the air what DGW34 and DGW37 are going to look like.

              Just a guess then ?

The PL may wait to see if teams get knocked out of Europe, which would open up many other mid week possibilities for 35 blanks

I think the broadcasters will also have bit of a say when and how the games get rescheduled

              1. Anything is possible, look at past rearrangements/dates https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-Xniaw-tEEiXoyqbGZLzMx6XEcv9TLolfa8GzndvTPw/edit#gid=1219748886 - it certainly looks unlikely it is going to be as straightforward as some people think.

I am doing bb in gw34. Much better in my opinion. Can get cheap defenders in from the likes of West Ham Swansea Brighton etc and loads up on midfield and striker assets. Will tc Kane in gw37

I have all my chips available to use. Does anyone have any tips on when best to use them?

      1. Depends how many players you have currently that are playing GW31 - if it's at least 5 or 6, WC GW32/33, BB GW34, FH GW35, TC GW37 seems to be the popular approach.

        1. Norregard
          • 13 Years
          8 years, 2 months ago

          That will be my tactic.

GW 31: 10 players (using my 3 remaining FT)
          WC: GW 32
          BB: GW 34
          FH: GW 35
          TC: GW 37

          I’ll have 6 or 7 players available for GW31.
          Robertson
          Salah
          Walcott
          Shaq
DcL (possibly transfer out for Wilson)
+1 more that I’ll transfer in next week

Depends on how the fixtures will be rearranged as for the BB and TC..

The most acknowledged use of FH and WC is too WC in 32/33 and FH in 35

From gw30 to dgw34 (ignore 31 as I will FH - also have no wc)

Who do you reckon will get more points

      A) Firmino (even though he has a game less)
      B) Vardy

Leaning towards A.. seems hard to ignore liverpool at the moment

Not really sure that is a waste of a transfer ... two games from Vardy and then buy Firmino back means 3 combined games rather than 2 just with Firmino - isn’t that worth using a free transfer for ?

Personally I would have Vardy and Firmino (season keeper), not either / or 🙂
