Spot the Differential

While we have a limited pool of players to choose from this week, we are still confident our trio of differentials can deliver once again.

A returning Crystal Palace attacker tops the bill, while a West Brom forward and a Liverpool defender are also backed to produce.

Wilfried Zaha

After supplying an assist on his return from injury in last weekend’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea, Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha could be a powerful differential in Gameweek 31.

The Ivory Coast international is expected to return to the starting XI for this afternoon’s trip to Huddersfield Town.

Eagles boss Roy Hodgson is likely to continue with a 4-4-2 formation and Zaha could be handed a start alongside either Christian Benteke or Alexander Sorloth up front.

Despite injuries limiting him to just 20 starts this season, Zaha sits second for penalty area shots (36), shots on target (15) and chances created (38) among Palace players.

He may have managed just four goals and as many assists so far, but Zaha’s minutes per shot (61.7 to 41.6) and minutes per chance created (80 to 48) are both up from last season, when he supplied seven goals, 11 assists and a career-high 149 points.

Owned by just 6.0% of Fantasy Premier League managers, Zaha promises to be a key influence against Huddersfield.

The Terriers kept a clean sheet at home to 10-man Swansea City last weekend, but they had conceded eight goals across their previous three matches at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Zaha’s 3.6 points per match is superior to any other Palace attacker and, at just 6.8 in FPL, he represents a stand-out differential option.

Salomon Rondon

With two goals from his last five Gameweek starts, and faced with a favourable trip to Bournemouth, West Bromwich Albion’s Salomon Rondon is worth a look.

The Cherries have mustered a single clean sheet from their last 17 encounters, while they rank first for the most shots conceded inside the box (43) and big chances allowed (16) over the last four Gameweeks.

Eddie Howe’s side have also conceded the most headed chances this season with 82, which is a weakness the 6.0-priced Rondon can exploit.

The Venezuelan’s numbers in recent weeks underline his status as the Baggies’ main attacking threat.

His nine shots inside the box over the last four Gameweeks put him fourth among players with a Gameweek 31 fixture, while no team-mate has registered more than three penalty area attempts.

With an ownership of only 1% in FPL, Rondon can be a real difference maker in Gameweek 31 for those maverick managers amongst us.

Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool’s star-studded attacking trio are garnering much of the interest ahead of this evening’s home meeting with Watford, but Virgil van Dijk is unfortunate to be on the periphery of our thinking.

The centre-back has been brought in by just 29,000 managers since Saturday’s deadline, which is less than a tenth of the interest there has been in team-mate Roberto Firmino.

Indeed, he is only the fifth most transferred-in Reds player.

But with the potential to deliver points at both ends of the pitch, the 7.7%-owned defender is worthy of taking up one of our three Liverpool slots.

Jurgen Klopp’s side boast the third strongest home defence, having conceded just 10 goals at Anfield.

Eight of their 12 clean sheets have come in front of their own fans.

Today’s opponents Watford travel to Merseyside having scored just two goals in their last eight away matches.

So the omens for defensive returns appear strong, while van Dijk has offered a real set-piece threat after joining from Southampton in January.

Since making his Reds debut in Gameweek 24, van Dijk has produced nine shots, with eight of those coming from inside the penalty area.

Only Leicester City’s Harry Maguire (11) and Burnley’s Ben Mee (nine) have registered more penalty area attempts among FPL defenders.

Offering arguably the best chance of both defensive and attacking returns of any defender in the reduced Gameweek 31, the Dutch international makes the decision on the three Liverpool slots a difficult one.

Can field 9 players for -4 and have this team for next week with a Mounie -> Auba transfer. Looks better than I expected, not sure I will WC 32, but rather hold for 33. Thoughts on how to plan?

Salah (cpl) Mahrez (bri) Sterling (eve) Stanislas (wat)

I took a hit for Baines and Mounie and am going without a keeper.

Though my closest mini league rivals all took a -4 so it was an easy decision for me.

Comments like this make this site a toxic place to be around.

What a ridiculous comment. Having 9/8/7 players in a week where mostly crap teams are playing is absolutely fine. Especially seing as most who have that few have gained copious points over the last 5/6 GW’s my bringing in players in good form rather than blindly planning for GW31.

Stop trying to make people feel bad.

Do the sums. Without a wildcard 11 players in gw31 means being short in gw34.

Loading up with these teams has been a bad idea because of how poor they are. How much deadweight have you had to carry for the last few weeks to achieve this.

              Its not clearcut.

This is a good point, I just think that you give yourself the best shot by getting 11 out every week, including this one. Goals assists and clean sheets can come from any team. Gomes saved 2 penalties in a game, although this is extremely unlikely, if you don't have a playing keeper, you don't have a chance of this. But yeah on the quality picks I understand, but would argue that with the notice we had, people would be able to build benches with 31 in mind.

        Just give up. Please.

Spending 5/6 GW’s planning for Gw31 and bringing in players purely because they have a GW31 is what people are referring too here. Obviously these players can score points this week but at what cost? Less points for 5/6 weeks in the run up.

It's not really wasting it. There are many viable strategies. Some have loaded on 31 players and have planned to wc after. Some completely ignored 31 and will FH now. Some will do something in between and wc 33 with more info. So throwing comments like OP is idiotic given so msny different strategies.

            It's just your tone mate.

Anyone who posts "what i do is right and anyone who disagrees is clearly an idiot" doesnt always go down too well.

Some people have their own ideas and may or may not have more points than you.

That's what this place is for though? A discussion? Maybe I should've posted it this way:

'Is it a mistake to plan to play one of 38 gameweeks in a season intentionally with less than the full 11?'

              Cheers though

Absolutely. Thats a much better post. Your position isnt necessarily wrong, its just you made the problem sound black and white when really its multiple shades of grey

Deulofeu injured, Sigurdsson injured, Ibe injured... is that poor game management? Kane too; that doesn't affect this week specifically but still needs dealing with.

Instead of tweaking my team for this week and saving a FT ready for GW32 I have spent the last few weeks fighting fires. Others have had issues with Shaqiri, Aguero... it has been pretty awkward if you got unlucky with player selection.

Yeah fair point about the injuries, just shocked that people seem to be almost boasting about not having enough players, as though teams like Crystal Palace and Bournemouth are somehow 'beneath' them.

It's not that so much I don't think. It's more what you do with those players afterwards. If you are wildcarding in GW32/33 that's less of an issue but not everyone is.

Number of players you have has nothing to do with whether you should take hits or not.

Even if you have 0 players and take a hit, the worst case expected scenario of -2 is worse than 0.

Yep. And conversely, the number of hits you have already taken has no bearing on whether you should take another one. Each needs to be considered on its own merits.

Sounds like someone takes this game a bit too serious. Focus on your own team and don't worry about other people. Weirdo.

I’ve been planning for this blank week for a bit. Not seriously, but making sure that I brought players in who definitely had a game this week.

Looking back, that was definitely the wrong thing to do. Losing out on Son and Otamendi points springs to mind, but also not getting players who I otherwise would have gotten in, like Mahrez.

They don't have any other gifs... Shaqiri is the only player to score for Stoke in the last SIX gameweeks.
