Line-up Lessons – Gameweek 31 – Part One

Mamadou Sakho’s first start since Gameweek 16 helps Crystal Palace to a much-needed clean sheet and three points at Huddersfield Town. Charlie Daniels drops to the Bournemouth bench only to benefit from an early injury to Simon Francis. Elsewhere, Alvaro Morata returns to help Chelsea into the FA Cup semi-finals.

Here’s part one of Line-up Lessons, assessing the teamsheets and formations from the Gameweek 31 matches and FA Cup quarter-finals, with one eye on what’s to come after the international break as we look to Gameweek 32 and the upcoming European matches.

Bournemouth

Starting XI: Begovic; Francis (Daniels 17), S Cook, Ake, Smith (Mousset 56); Stanislas, L Cook, Gosling, Ibe; King; Wilson (Defoe 73)
Subs not used: Boruc, Fraser, Pugh, Surman.

  • What we saw: Although Eddie Howe rolled out the 4-4-1-1 system once again, he made a couple of alterations for the home encounter against West Bromwich Albion. Adam Smith moved from the right side of midfield to left-back as Charlie Daniels dropped to the bench. Jordon Ibe came in on the right wing, while the fit-again Josh King replaced Lys Mousset in the support striker role. But Howe was forced into an early reshuffle after Simon Francis picked up a hamstring problem. Adam Smith moved to right-back, with Daniels coming on at left-back. Smith himself had to be withdrawn just before the hour mark after receiving a heavy blow to the knee, seeing substitute Mousset play as an attacking right-sided player as the Cherries looked to get back into the match.
  • What we learned: While Bournemouth have a break until Gameweek 32, when they travel to Watford, both Francis and Adam Smith look likely to struggle to recover in time. Brad Smith and Jack Simpson provide cover at right-back but Daniels did provide an assist at the weekend and will surely earn a recall. Asmir Begovic has withdrawn from the Bosnia squad due to a long-standing knee problem but this is believed to be a precaution. Changes appear less likely further forward, although the international break will afford Jermain Defoe more time to work on his fitness levels, meaning he remains a threat to Callum Wilson’s start up front. The striker is now without a goal in six Gameweeks.

Current Status: Settled
Risk Areas: Goalkeeper, full-backs, lone striker

Brighton & Hove Albion

Starting XI: Krul; Schelotto, Duffy, Dunk, Suttner; Kayal, Propper, Gross; Locadia, Ulloa (Murray 77), March (Izquierdo 68). Subs not used: Maenpaa, Baldock, Goldson, Saltor, Sanders.

  • What we saw: Chris Hughton switched from his usual 4-4-1-1 formation to a 4-3-3 for the trip to Manchester United in the FA Cup. Pascal Gross dropped back into the three-man midfield, allowing Jurgen Locadia (left) and Solly March (right) to flank central striker Leonardo Ulloa. Markus Suttner came in for the injured Gaetan Bong at left-back, while Tim Krul was handed a rare start in goal.
  • What we learned: After handing some squad players minutes at Old Trafford, Hughton is expected to revert back to his favoured 4-4-1-1 system for the Gameweek 32 home fixture against Leicester City. Gross should return to the central support role, then, with Glenn Murray back as the lone striker. Jose Izquierdo should start on the left wing, with March and Locadia seemingly battling it out for the starting spot on the right flank in the absence of the suspended Anthony Knockaert. The international break is likely to give Dale Stephens enough time to return to full fitness, with Beram Kayal providing cover in central midfield. Suttner will be on standby to start at left-back should Bong remain sidelined, while Mat Ryan will return in goal against the Foxes.

Current Status: Settled
Risk Areas: Left-back, central midfield, right wing

Chelsea

Starting XI: Caballero; Azpilicueta, Christensen (Cahill 101), Rudiger; Moses, Bakayoko (Fabregas 46), Kante, Alonso; Willian (Pedro 92), Morata (Giroud 105), Hazard. Subs not used: Zappacosta, Emerson, Eduardo.

  • What we saw: Antonio Conte continued with his preferred 3-4-2-1 formation for the trip to Leicester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals. Alvaro Morata was recalled as the lone striker, while Tiemoue Bakayoko returned in central midfield. Cup goalkeeper Willy Caballero started in place of Thibaut Courtois, who was also nursing a minor hamstring injury.
  • What we learned: With a crucial home clash against Tottenham Hotspur in Gameweek 32, Conte is likely to show faith with a similar starting XI. After scoring his first goal since Boxing Day, Morata may retain his start ahead of Olivier Giroud, though the Frenchman has started both home league matches since arriving from Arsenal. Meanwhile, Cesc Fabregas is a viable alternative to Bakayoko in the middle of the park. Caballero will be on standby to start should Courtois be ruled out, which appears unlikely. The rest of the side looks settled, with Gary Cahill, Davide Zappacosta and Pedro unlikely to force their way into the starting line-up.

Current Status: Settled
Risk Areas: Goalkeeper, Central midfield, lone striker

Crystal Palace

Starting XI: Hennessey; Wan-Bissaka, Sakho, Tomkins, van Aanholt; Townsend, McArthur, Milivojevic, Schlupp (Cabaye 20); Benteke, Zaha (Loftus-Cheek 89). Subs not used: Lee Chung-yong, Cavalieri, Fosu-Mensah, Kelly, Riedewald.

  • What we saw: Roy Hodgson made two changes for the trip to Huddersfield Town, with the fit-again Mamadou Sakho and Wilfried Zaha replacing Martin Kelly and the injured Alexander Sorloth. Those alterations saw the Eagles line up in a 4-3-3, with Jeffrey Schlupp part of the three-man midfield, while Andros Townsend (right) and Zaha (left) flanked central striker Christian Benteke. Schlupp was forced off with a knock early on, seeing Yohan Cabaye enter the fray in a straight swap. The returning Ruben Loftus-Cheek replaced Zaha late on – the Ivory Coast international, who was struggling with fatigue, had also picked up a couple of knocks.
  • What we learned: After getting back to winning ways, Hodgson is likely to stick with a similar starting XI for the home meeting with Liverpool following the international break. Zaha is expected to be available, though even if Schlupp is fit to start, he could lose out to Cabaye in central midfield should the Eagles manager stick with a 4-3-3. Meanwhile, Sorloth should also have enough time to recover from the muscle problem that saw him miss out at the weekend. But the forward may have to settle for a place on the bench. Aaron Wan-Bissaka retained his start at right-back, and looks set to keep his place ahead of Timothy Fosu-Mensah.

Current Status: Settled
Risk Areas: Central midfield, flanks, forwards

Everton

Starting XI: Pickford; Baines, Keane, Jagielka, Coleman; Davies (Calvert-Lewin 53), Gueye, Rooney (Schneiderlin 87); Bolasie (Holgate 90), Walcott, Tosun. Subs not used: Joel, Martina, Niasse, Klaassen.

  • What we saw: While Sam Allardyce kept faith in the 4-2-3-1 formation for the trip to Stoke City, the Toffees boss was forced into making one change, with Idrissa Gueye returning from illness to replace the injured Gylfi Sigurdsson. Gueye joined Wayne Rooney in the double-pivot, while Tom Davies operated in a withdrawn No 10 role. With the Potters down to ten men, Allardyce brought on the more attacked-minded Dominic Calvert-Lewin for Davies, who had sustained a heavy blow in a clash with Jack Butland. Mason Holgate came on in injury time to form a five-man defence as Everton looked to hold on to their 2-1 lead.
  • What we learned: Following another victory, changes should be kept to a minimum for the Gameweek 32 encounter with Manchester City at Goodison Park. Morgan Schneiderlin provides a more defensive option in the middle of the park, although Davies is likely to retain his start as long as he’s fully fit. Calvert-Lewin offers a possible alternative in the attacking midfield positions.

Current Status: Settled
Risk Areas: Central midfield, flanks, attacking midfield

Huddersfield Town

Starting XI: Lossl; Hadergjonaj, Jorgensen, Schindler, Malone (Lowe 46); Mooy, Hogg; Quaner, Ince (van La Parra 61), Pritchard (Kachunga 71), Mounie. Subs not used: Smith, Billing, Coleman, Depoitre.

  • What we saw: David Wagner only made one alteration for the visit of Palace to the John Smith’s Stadium, handing a recall to Collin Quaner, with Rajiv van La Parra dropping to the bench. Quaner was stationed on the right of the attacking midfield trio in the usual 4-2-3-1 formation, with Tom Ince moving over to the left flank. Trailing 2-0, Wagner decided to bring on the fit-again Elias Kachunga for Alex Pritchard.
  • What we learned: The disappointing 2-0 defeat could see Wagner consider making changes for the Gameweek 32 trip to Newcastle United. The left-back spot looks up for grabs, given Chris Lowe replaced Scott Malone at half-time last weekend, while Terence Kongolo may be fit to return, and is the favourite to start if available. Van La Parra and Kachunga could push for starts on the flank, while Laurent Depoitre may be considered for a recall up front after five successive starts for Steve Mounie.

Current Status: Fairly settled
Risk Areas: Left-back, flanks, lone striker

Leicester City

Starting XI: Schmeichel; Simpson (Diabate 106), Morgan, Maguire, Chilwell; Mahrez, Iborra (Silva 106), Ndidi, Albrighton (Gray 115); Iheanacho (Okazaki 68), Vardy. Subs not used: Hamer, Dragovic, Fuchs.

  • What we saw: Claude Puel rolled out his favoured 4-4-1-1 system for the FA Cup quarter-final against Chelsea, although he did surprisingly prefer Kelechi Iheanacho to Shinji Okazaki in the support striker role. Marc Albrighton got the nod over Demarai Gray on the left wing, with Gray only afforded five minutes from the bench in extra-time. Fousseni Diabate also entered the fray during extra-time as the Foxes went on the attack.
  • What we learned: For the Gameweek 32 trip to Brighton, Okazaki is likely to return at the expense of Iheanacho. Adrien Silva and Gray provide possible alternatives to Vicente Iborra and Albrighton, with changes less likely in defence. Christian Fuchs is the defender most likely to challenge for a recall at left-back in place of Ben Chilwell.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Central midfield, left wing, support striker

Liverpool

Starting XI: Karius; Gomez, Van Dijk, Matip, Robertson; Henderson, Emre Can (Milner 27), Wijnaldum (Oxlade-Chamberlain 71); Salah, Firmino (Ings 79), Mane. Subs not used: Mignolet, Klavan, Moreno, Alexander-Arnold.

  • What we saw: Jurgen Klopp rang the changes following the 2-1defeat to Manchester United. Joe Gomez and Joel Matip earned recalls at right-back and centre-back respectively, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dejan Lovren making way. Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum returned in the usual three-man midfield, with James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain dropping to the bench. Milner didn’t have to wait long before entering the fray, though, taking over from Emre Can in the middle of the park after the German international was forced off with a back problem.
  • What we learned: With a demanding upcoming schedule, rotation looks inevitable as Klopp tries to navigate through the next couple of weeks. After the international break, Liverpool travel to Palace in Gameweek 32, before hosting Manchester City in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final just four days later. The Merseyside derby then follows three days on, before the second leg of the European tie on April 10. Gomez and Alexander-Arnold looks set to continue sharing pitch time at right-back, while Alberto Moreno offers an option if Klopp feels that Andrew Robertson needs a rest. In central defence, Lovren and Matip are expected to share starts. Klopp also has good options in central midfield, but with the likes of Danny Ings and Dominic Solanke the only back-up options in attack, there could be limited opportunities to rest his stars in the front three. Instead, the likes of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane may have their minutes cut late on in the matches at Palace and Everton.

Current Status: Slightly Unsettled
Risk Areas: Right-back, central defenders, central midfield

Part two of Line-up Lessons, assessing the remaining seven teams, will follow tomorrow.

I'd at least find a way to get Alonso with that model, or just move funds from him to upgrade one other. Maybe Mustafi and Christensen over Azpi and Dummett.

3 games is a long time for a FPL squad. Using the FH in 35 after a double game week in 34 means that you get your original 34 team back 3 games later without the opportunity of using a transfer over that period.

My squad after FH31 was returned with 2 red flags after just one game 🙂

Any one worried that their team will be returned in 36 with more red flags than Tianomen Square on National Day ?

      • 10 Years

If there are any major injuries, I would skip the idea of FH35 and sort the team instead. Thats why planning to go with 2FTs in GW35...

For those that WC in 32 it may mean that FTs are needed for 34 anyway.

Sorting out a team in 35 that has been set up for the 34 & 37 doubles will be interesting ... I think you just need to hope you get lucky and sort out the team in 36? Not much else to do really ?

    Ok last draft before sleep.
The risk on Andy King gives a pretty decent WC I think and of course Jones would need to be confirmed fit - after dropping by .1 🙂
9 double double players -can't count DeGea and Ryan for both doubles
    What ye think?

    DeGea Ryan

    Jones Alonso Christensen Naughton Morgan

Salah Mahrez Son Willian A. King

    Aubameyang Firminio Vardy.

I wouldn’t double Chelsea defence, maybe bring in Arsenal defender (especially if you don’t have a free hit chip left) because they have great fixtures - Morgan and Fernandez will cover any rotation

K probably can lose a possible 37 dgwer for now. Mustafi was in most previous drafts
With the Spurs game up next at least an immediate Che defence double up might not be great. Thanks.

I'm going without Firmino and 5 medium ones in the middle. But I think you are set on him with value etc.? I think the weak spots are Ryan and King but not much that can be done to that. DDG + Fab is the combo that would be lovely in my opinion. If you would chop Christensen for let's say ~Lowton price def you could maybe do something?

Thanks if I went Fab I would lose Naughton.
On Lowton I could have just kept Pope to go with DeGea 🙂

Yeah set on Firminio as have made about 1 mil, but 34 home to Bou could be nice for Salah and Firminio.

How's this for a WC squad?

    De Gea | Fabianski
    Christensen | Otamendi | Lowton | Chilwell | Dummett
    Mahrez | Salah | Sterling | Son | Gudmunsson
    Lukaku | Aubameyang | Murray

Any areas that I can improve?

Apologies for the long 6am post - my baby was up early so time to kill!

The FFS masses have been working on the general assumption that the postponed GW31 matches are going to be rearranged for GW34, and the postponed GW35 matches are going to be moved to GW37, even though there is no real logic to this assumption any more now all the postponements for GW31 and GW35 are known without any matches being rearranged yet.

However, on another site there is a forum where they talk about what matches are going to be scheduled for TV and why https://forums.digitalspy.com/discussion/2224042/2017-18-premier-league-tv-fixtures-thread/ who haven't been working on this assumption . To clarify, I am not saying these people are right and "we" are wrong, I'm just saying that fixture arrangement is all they talk about so I personally wouldn't listen to their theories less than a theory based on an assumption which no longer appears to hold much weight.

Although (obviously) there are many different opinions on there, one of the more frequent and (appears to be) most respected posters on there has predicted that there will be more games rearranged for GW37 than GW34, which will make GW37 a bigger DGW than GW34. This appears to be without any FPL angle or bias (so he's not being a dick for the sake of it!).

His theory is summarised as this.........

    1) 10 games are to be rearranged, and there are 6 TV slots for these 10 - five for Sky and one for BT.
    2) All DGW games will be played in GW34 and GW37 because they can (no need to clash with Europe like the last few seasons which effects overseas ratings especially)
    3) There will not be a PL game arranged for Sky for Thursday 19th April (GW34), evidenced by Sky already confirming an EFL game to be live that night
    4) The match BT have live dibs for is Bournemouth v Man U - as Man U v Tottenham is likely to be the BBC choice of televised FA Cup semi finals which is likely to be played tea-time Saturday 19th April, Bournemouth v Man U won't be played on the Thursday either, meaning it is likely there are no PL games on Thursday 17th April.
    5) That means there is likely to be two midweek nights only for GW34 (Tuesday and Wednesday), so a live match on each of these nights leaves 4 slots left for TV purposes, which can be Monday to Thursday consecutively GW37 - Sky did a similar thing to this last season.
    6) This means the BT game (Bournemouth v Man U) is likely to be GW34 - Wednesday is the logical day as Man U play the Sunday before. This means West Ham v Man U would need to be GW37 - this was earmarked for Sky as a live game originally and likely Sky would want to keep it live
    7) Man City's game with Brighton will be rearranged for GW37 - it looks very unlikely the PL would ask them to have a DGW in GW34 when the could have European matches the midweeks of GW32, 33, 35 and 36 (there is a decent break between the semis and the final)
    8) This means Brighton v Spurs will need to go to GW34, so accordingly Spurs v Newcastle will go to GW37 - this will please Wembley also as they probably wouldn't want a Spurs home game in midweek GW34 a few days before FA Cup semi finals over consecutive days.
    9) Brighton v Spurs was earmarked for Sky as a live game and likely Sky would want to keep it live, so that would be on the Tuesday of GW34
    10) This leaves one TV slot left for GW37 - the remaining earmarked Sky live game was Burnley v Chelsea, so assumed they would want to keep that live and move it there. That would mean Chelsea v Huddersfield for GW34.
    11) That leaves 3 matches to go - let's assume Arsenal would want their match GW37 as well (for similar reasons as Man City though a bit flimsier as EL cup final earlier than CL final), so Leicester v Arsenal GW37, which means has to be Leicester v Southampton GW34 and Southampton v Swansea GW37.

So, that could leave the schedule as.............

    GW34

    Tue 17 Apr
    Brighton v Tottenham - Sky
    Chelsea v Huddersfield
    Leicester v Southampton

    Wed 18 Apr
Bournemouth v Man Utd - BT

    GW37

    Mon 7 May
West Ham v Man Utd - Sky (with West Ham and Man Utd's weekend games before moved back to Friday, one of which for TV)

    Tue 8 May
    Newcastle v Tottenham - Sky

    Wed 9 May
Man City v Brighton - Sky
    Southampton v Swansea
    Leicester v Arsenal

    Thu 10 May
    Burnley v Chelsea - Sky

For clarity (for when this is wrong), I am not saying I think this will be 100% correct and could be completely wrong, but the logic used seems a lot more sturdy than the current FFS assumption.

I guess we will find out soon enough! (today hopefully!!!!)

This has been brewing for ages, broadcasters get their games spread across a Saturday and Sunday but the 10 postponed games clash with each other during a mid week and need to be spread out a bit to avoid broadcaster clashes (already allocated before blanks were known so something has to give)

There is bound to be a twist and Ben Crenlin is hedging his bets and expecting a few games shuffled around

... too many chickens have been counted already in all these WC drafts 😉

That’s interesting, thanks. I have held off on wc but have also used my free hit so if arsenal and Man City have a double in gw37 and not 34 then that could make gw35 very tricky for me if I want to bench boost in 34

The EL final is in the mid-week after GW38. That's a big argument against a DGW for Arsenal in GW37.

FH in 37 probably becomes more desirable in this scenario

Wildcard this week not awful either but those with TC and BB left with an active wildcard may not see as good a benefit.

You mentioned it in passing for about 5 seconds, Andy. That's a bit different to researching and writing an article about the subject and carefully laying out your arguments.

I will have to rewatch the episode but I seem to remember that on the whole you went along with the FH in 35 consensus and barely challenged it.

      Nice post Jarvish.

I never really looked into the fixture movement in that much detail but this has convinced me that a scenario where all the GW31 and GW35 Blanks are moved to GWs 37 and 34 respectively is more likely than GW31 to GW34 and GW35 to GW37.

I just made predictions made based on what they've done in the pas; in the last few seasons, most of the QF Blanks have been moved to GW34 and most of the SF Blanks have been moved to GW37.
2012/13 was the last time that all of the postponements caused by the EFL Cup final were played before GWs 34 and 37; in that season, all the QF Blanks were moved to DGW33 and all the SF Blanks were moved to DGW36.

Of those 11 assumptions that you/the Digital Spy forum member have made, the only one that I have a slight issue with is number 7. I think that Man City's game vs Brighton could be rescheduled to DGW34. When Man City reached the Champions League Semifinals a couple of years ago, they only had one Blank fixture and it was moved to Gameweek 34 even though Man City played Champions League matches in the midweeks of GWs 32, 33, 35 and 36.

Thanks Ben - yes, I would be amazed if this is 100% correct as there are so many permutations - would be nice if they would just get on and announce the bloody things though, then we can stop speculating and just bloody get on with it 😉 Cheers for your continued hard work on the spreadsheets - amazing resources 🙂

          Cheers.

Not sure if you'll read this but... I've figured out that there are 16 possible scenarios for how the Blanks could be rescheduled (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-Xniaw-tEEiXoyqbGZLzMx6XEcv9TLolfa8GzndvTPw/edit#gid=1323799726) and I'm trying to figure out which scenarios are likely and which are pretty much impossible (if the TV picks stay the same).

I understand that Man United have to play one of their Blanks on Wed 18 Apr, but why do you think BOU vs MUN is more likely to be moved to Wed 18th Apr than WHU vs MUN?

I've just realised that West Ham are playing Stoke on Mon Apr 16, so if that game isn't rescheduled (possibly to the Friday night?), then BOU vs MUN has to be on Wed 18 Apr.

Great post Jarvish. Glad I held fire on the WC.
You seem decent at differing permutations. Every thought of appearing on Countdown?

Well if it goes tits up and the dgw does not happen in 34 I only have myself to blame for activating my wildcard!

Most of the players you would want if this happens are still the ones we have already brought in tho.

        Great post!!

But I have a question, and I may have gotten lost in the middle.

Surely semi final team blanks from 35 have to be in 37, so surely therefore given hey can't play twice in 37 midweek... those teams have to have a double elsewhere?

        Gotta say great work Jarvis!
Regardless of how it all shapes out, its a post of great vaule.

But also gotta say I don't understand the panic amongst those who've activated, and the gloating from those who dont in the comments to this post. If one has activated the WC allready, then surely your WC will be built for 32-38 and not just the doubles and blanks. Unless those on a wc for 32 have rid themselves of players which they had a lot of value with, and subsequently want them back after the fix are announced, I dont really see a problem.

Regardless of the other chips, those with WC left, most will want to activate their WC ahead of the first DGW as a wc36 requires a very strong current squad.

Those with all chips left wil still have to struggle with the balance of the teams with 2 dgws and still having cover with the players that otherwise look "essential".

I'm currently on my WC, and ive got BB and FH left but have used TC. I dont regret activating and would welcome the permutation Jarvish suggests. Only makes it easier to build a great team for the run in as well as a FH34 and BB37 😀

        Nice 'work'.

Having been a member of DS I wouldn't take anything on there as gospel...they are just like us, speculators. This might be right, might be wrong. As said, many permutations.

As for playing your WCs already I wouldn't worry about it. If you have all remaining chips bizarrely it can hinder you in just the confusion.
I know WC is considered the most powerful but even so by deploying it you can focus your attention much more than have an open plan that just swings you this way then that and you end up with a muddled outcome.

      On my WC.
      Please help me choose 1:

      A. Alonso + Vardy + Tarkowski + VDH
      Or
      B. Firmino + Naughton + 2 of Snalling/Christensen/Mustafi

      Cheers all.

Not quite that much. But had Salah and Firmino from 9.1 and 8.5 which really helps (or hinders if I wanted to think about shipping Bobby)
