Monitor – Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang

With a reduced Gameweek 31 limiting the scope of Big Numbers, we’re taking a new route with our articles for members over the international break.

Our “Monitor” series will focus on some of the top transfer targets set to be involved in the Double Gameweeks and therefore included in Wildcard squads, as we analyse our data to offer an appraisal of their prospects.

We start the series by turning to Arsenal’s Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang, a player being lined up by many Fantasy managers as a ready-made replacement for the stricken Harry Kane.

Over 114,000 acquired the Gabon international for Gameweek 31, despite the fact he was without a league fixture.

Since Saturday’s deadline passed and more Wildcards are wielded in anticipation of double Gameweeks, Aubameyang is the most bought player in Fantasy Premier League, collecting a further 110,00 new owners.

With that in mind, we take a look at his impact since arriving at the Emirates over the winter break.

Handed a debut in Gameweek 26, Aubameyang has bagged three goals, an assist and 26 FPL points in five league outings – averaging 5.2 points per match.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Is Alonso really essential?

I see him listed in almost every WC team but he has had a terrible return of points in the last 6 GWs and is at risk of rotation in the DGWs now there is another LB at Chelsea. Azpi, who plays every game, seems to be a better option.

I am currently an Alonso owner have no interest in keeping him.

He was the first name in for me. No CL so a more limited risk of rotation and far more chance of attacking returns than Azpi. If I wasn't picking Alonso, I wouldn't even half-consider Azpi as a (slightly) cheaper alternative

He's due - I know, shouldn't say that 😆 - and he can help upgrade Auba to Kane if you want to?

I initially was trying to get him in but now I am looking to christensen and some others. It opens up alot of cash (1.9m) to invest in mid or another def.

Desirable but not essential. Not enough clean sheets recently and lots of away fixtures. His goal return is good for a defender but without the clean sheets he’s less productive than Doucoure or Mili

    WC 32 - BB 34 - FH 37

    DDG | Fabianski
Vertonghan | Mustafi | Van der Horn | Lowton | Mariappa
    Salah | Mahrez | Son | Arnautovic | Ki/Gudmonsson/Kennedy
    Lukaku | Aubameyang | Barnes

I find this gives me a great deal of room for BGW 35, easily allowing me to field 11 and get in Aguero/Jesus for Lukaku and a City mid for Mahrez/Son before I FH them back in for 37.

    2) Vardy + Mkhi

I really like Vardy but my only issue with him is that its further away from Kane, Meaning when I need Kane back its more than just two transfers, this is the reason I'm looking at Lukaku,Auba,Cheapie as front 3

      1. Salah’s Sonnet
        • 12 Years

it's more away from Kane? Sure the guyto go for Kane anyway would be the highest priced forward you'd have? Inthis case, Auba.
I'm also considering going without Kane for rest of the season, out injured and won't exactly hit the ground running after that ankle injury, can see him letting a lot of people down.

Sure Auba could be the one to make way but what if he hits great form. Much better to have the higher priced Lukaku in that isolated situation alone. Obviously everyone has different thoughts. I would make sure to keep an eye on Kane though if you do go without he has the ability to punish.

If Auba hits great form then i'd just keep him and sacrifice elsewhere. Lukaku hold zero appeal tome, hardly sets any game alight, and i' a man u fan haha!
Kane, can punish yes, but likely that he won't coming back from that injury. Things can change though i guess, but i'm pretty certain i won't be fetching him in.

If you FH in GW35, you don't have Eriksen's blank, but Salah's fixture instead. So it's:

                A) Salah (x1) + Eriksen (x7)
                B) Salah (x6)

If you think B is better, then fair enough, but I'm not convinced at the moment.

Of course you can cancel out the fixture that A and B have in common (GW35); hence Pras United calling it:

                  A) Eriksen (x7)
                  B) Salah (x5)

Last GW Salah scored the same # of points as Eriksen has scored in the past seven GWs.

True, but Eriksen missed one of those matches, as you know. If you count the last 7 starts for Eriksen, he scored 9 more than Salah did in the last GW.

If you believe Eriksen will continue to score at the same rate (38 points from 7 starts) and Salah the same rate as the last game (29pts per game), then you would choose Salah over Eriksen. But as Pras says below, this is a game of prediction, and most people wouldn't predict that Salah will score 145 goals in the final 5 GWs (excluding his GW35 fixture).

If you compare over the previous 7 starts for both players and multiply them by the number of games you would get from Pras' scenario until the end of the season, you get this prediction:

        Eriksen = 5.43ppg * 7 games = 38.0pts
        Salah = 12.14ppg * 5 games = 60.7pts

Obviously we can see than Eriksen doesn't have 7 times less than Salah. Add the fact that Salah's ppg is higher than we would expect for the final games of the season, for reason's including rotation risk. I personally expect to see a higher ppg for Eriksen over the final 7 games, but that's just my opinion. To be honest, ppg itself is not a great predictor of ppg anyway, which is why my expected ppg isn't reflected by the ppg of the previous 7 games. Again it's a game of prediction, so choose your own methods.

TL;DR it's an interesting question to ask, and the answer isn't as clear as you insinuate.

You mean 4 goals and an assist in one game? Coz the 12.1ppg includes the last GW when he did that. So he might need to do more than one more spree to maintain or raise his 12ppg.

You mean another spree of scoring lots of goals across multiple GWs? Coz he's done that already to achieve that 12.1ppg, so without those goals and without the 29pt haul, his ppg would be lower.

If you think he will maintain his ppg then fair enough, but how about Eriksen? He could also go on a spree. Anyone could do anything, and Eriksen is certainly capable of goals. He scored 2 on Saturday.

And if not Eriksen, we could be talking about Hazard or Son or Alli or anyone else of course 🙂

I agree with Pras, it’s worthy of consideration, especially for chasers. Need to consider how many times you will captain Salah over that period too. Probably not in 34, 36 or 37

Ok so here is the comparison (applies to those with FH and WC 33) and assuming Ben C's schedule:

      GW 32 - Salah (wat)
GW 33 - Eriksen (stk) instead of Salah (eve)
GW 34 - Eriksen (bha and MCI) instead of Salah (vs BOU)
      GW 35 - Salah (wba)
GW 36 - Eriksen (WAT) instead of Salah (STK)
GW37 - Eriksen (wba and NEW) instead of Salah (che)
GW38 - Eriksen (LEI) instead of Salah (BHA)

Unfortunately Salah can’t play Watford again this week, it’s cpa.

But without captaincy in 3 of his fixtures (if Kane fit v WAT in 36) he is less appealing.

Well since you know how much each player will score each week in the future, could you tell us how much more or less Eriksen will score than Salah in the other GWs pls? 😛

Can Eriksen make up the deficit from GWs 36 and 38 in the other GWs?

How about if you were to buy Salah back for GW38, Will Salah score that much more than Eriksen in GW36 that Eriksen can't make up the deficit in the other weeks (excluding GW38)?

I definitely want to plan for this, but there's no way I'm getting rid of Salah before GW34. Ideally Salah > Hazard would be the final piece of the puzzle to get 11 or 15 DGW players for GW34. It's a convenient transfer as Hazard could be the captain in GW34 and GW37. Their price is the same and would make the reverse transfer possible. It's a transfer that you don't have to pull the trigger on. Hazard is more of a luxury than a must, so you can just use your FT for GW34 differently if it's not appealing to lose Salah.

      Dubious HT material...

Had them both, and Kane, Aguero, Son, before the blank. Not difficult to get both again. Personally I've been underwhelmed by CE this season. Owned for two spells and missed out on most of his hauls. With Kane out I'm tempted by the Alli Son double up. Alli put in some excellent performances when Kane was out last season.

      Captaincy.

Salah is probably going to be the standout captain in 32, 33, 36 & 38. Not captaining him is bad enough when he hauls, imagine not having him at all. Huge red arrows.

I've used the TC, so im guessing ill be tempted to remove salah come 37 if thats the biggest DGW. I'd go WC32-FH34-BB37. Carry Salah 32-36 and bring him back for 38 if there isnt more pressing issues. Salah plays CFC away in 37 🙂

If you look at Rate My Team, you get something like this:

          A) Eriksen (6 games) = 31.38
          B) Salah (4 games) = 28.96

This is excluding GW38 because you could buy Salah back for this week (and also because RMT only stretches as far as GW37).

To create Eriksen's score, I have used the average from the 4 expected values given by RMT and multiplied by 6 to simulate the double GWs. The resulting value is therefore conservative because the expected values for the missing GWs should be higher than the average value used in this calculation, since Spurs' postponed fixtures are NEW and bha.

Of course I could now be guilty of overthinking in your eyes, but in my eyes, I'm just guilty of thinking (about FPL in the first place!). At least according to RMT, anyway, this HT isn't crazy.

I sold Salah to get Auba(C)in GW30. FH Salah back in for his captaincy haul last week. It helped me to climb 400k+ places so it has worked out thus far haha, of course at my rank to say that I was chasing is an understatement.
Eriksen punt over Salah for a 7 v 5 game scenario could be great for those chasing and not planning on captaining Salah in some of the games! Not as crazy as many seem to think! Why not play a high risk game if you are well behind, it is team and/or ML dependant.
Managers laughing off the idea are just being petty.

...of course he is but you are not getting it. If you are chasing and are not going to captain him plus there is a chance that Eriksen outscores Salah in the scenario outlined by the OP. LIV will have a couple of subdued performances during the run in, they always do!

So actually you’re not just betting that Eriksen outscores Salah, you’re also betting that each of Mahrez, Hazard and Sanchez outscores him too because each of them could easily be traded to Salah. I can’t begin to see that happening considering what’s happened in the first 3/4 of the season so far.

Simple. Plus you’d captain Salah and not Eriksen.

I've benefitted plenty of times in the past selling the 'best' players in the game at any given time.

Gotta find the advantages in this game where you can.

It's not really gambling your whole season when you're paying for the risk with an extra 2 games on a player who is more nailed, and has a decent history, and you get a bit of spare cash to spread around that others don't get.

I think people get a bit too attached and blinkered by the romance of owning the best player and the fear of missing out without him.

This was intended to be a response to the comment below, sorry.

His response isn't banal, it's valid and succinct. 31 GWs of FPL points outputs isn't particularly impressive. points outputs. Perhaps expected goals and assists, the eye test and common sense to contextualise the data are more useful for predicting FPL points in the future.

You were the one saying people were crazy for considering something, then implying that the simple calculation could robustly predict the amount of points each player could get. How banal is that to ignore all the nuances that could affect each players' scores after all the discussion above?

        Pretty close then.

7.4pts separate them. That's hardly 'madness'. Especially given that some people might predict those PPGs to change towards the end of the season.

Let's say I personally predict that Eriksen will get 6ppg for the rest of the season = 42pts

        Let's also say that I predict Salah will get 8ppg = 40pts

Now am I mad because I predict the ppg will change, or am I mad because 6 multiplied by 7 is actually not higher than 8 multiplied by 5?

This just seems a classic case of not looking a gift horse in the mouth.

Salah is the best player in the game and the highest scoring player. It’s not worth gambling your whole season by getting rid of him. You have 7 other attacking slots for your differentials. That’s plenty.

Salah has way to high an ownership considering I am competing mostly with casuals (in the OR league as well as my ML). So, currently, not even thinking about it.

But this could be a massive move. Could push you from 10-20k up to within 1k or back to above 100k.

Removing him in the spell of 32-37 is not madness, but it is risky due to captaincy and ownership. And I dont think its as easy as stated with just comparing salah with eriksen (if thats) the one your bringing in.

If you remove him you have to put all the players on your team in the same pricebracket under the same scrutiny as Eriksen.
Let's say your selling value with Salah is 9.8-10.0 and you want to punt on something like:
      Son, Erik, Haz, Mahrez, Kenedy
      Lukaku, Auba
You'd at least need to be confident that:
      - Mahrez and the extra mill is worth not having salah
      - Son and extra 1,5 is worth it
      - Eriksen needs to outscore Salah
      - Haz needs to outscore Salah and the extra 0.5-1.0 shouldnt cost you points elsewhere.
      - Same with Kaku
      - Same with Auba

With Salah's ppg your prob doomed to get some of these judgements wrong but at the same time your more likely to have a player that could prove a massive differential bein able to select "punts" like eriksen and Hazard.

      Might use a FT for GW34 Salah to Haz. FH35. That way Haz has 5 fixtures to Salah's 3 - GW34, GW36, GW37.

Haz - Sou, Bur, Swa, Liv, Hud
      Salah - Bou, Stoke, Che

Hazard is definitely capable of outscoring Salah in this scenario. Salah might be rested around champs league also.

High risk, high reward. If Haz does outscore Salah then I gain on almost everybody.

      Would miss 34 & 36 -- Bou (H) & Sto (H) .. could easily score a hat-trick in both fixtures.

      1. Deulofail

        Let's say a hattrick = 17pts * 2 games + 17pts (for GW36 captaincy) = 51pts over 2 games. Possible, but unlikely.

        Add his RMT score for GWs 33 & 37 -- Eve (A) & Che (A) -- 18.26 ≈ 69pts (assuming you captain him in GW33, but not in GW37)

So the questions is: How likely is (something like) the following to achieve 69 points or more?

GW 33 - Eriksen (stk) + Aubameyang (SOU)
GW 34 - Eriksen (bha) + Eriksen (MCI)
GW 36 - Eriksen (WAT) + Kane (WAT)
        GW37 - Eriksen (wba) + Eriksen (NEW)

I would argue that this is possible, much like Salah getting 2 hattricks in those two games, but it is not as unlikely. The players in this scenario need to achieve a ppg of 8.6, which is quite high, but the fixtures are decent.

Even better, the 69-point expected value for Salah relies on him getting a hattrick in two games (or perhaps 4 goals in one and 2 in the other, or something). This is generous since 17pts is much above his average performance this season.

TL;DR - again, it's closer than you think. If you sell Salah in GW34 instead of GW33, it would be even better.

So what if Salah *doesn't* score a hattrick in those 2 games?

What if he only scores a goal in each game?

Let's say a goal a game = 7ppg. Suddenly you've lost 30pts in the above scenario. That Eriksen/Auba/Kane group only have to achieve 39 points in 8 games. That's 4.9ppg to outscore the scenario in which you kept Salah because you were confident he would get a double hattrick.

And this is ignoring any money you might save and be spending elsewhere

Calm down. My comment had nothing to do with the content of your post. It was probably marvellous. I just saw you posting literally days after most people had left off, and even replying to yourself. It just put me in mind of the last guy at the party, carrying on while everyone else had either passed out or gone home. It was a joke about the situation, not about your fpl opinions.

I am SO keeping Salah btw.

Shame HTs have a time limit really, but I replied the same day as the comment. If there's one place to post your thoughts and work on a certain topic, it's on the HT to which it belongs. Otherwise we just get repetition on the comment section. Just doing my bit to try and contribute in a meaningful way. Sorry if it sounded like an overreaction. I also told a joke, but it went over Jarvish's head as usual *winky face*

With every man and his dog captaining or triple captaining Kane in 37 it’s the ideal game week to bring in a player with a double gameweek for Salah, and then bring back Salah for 38. Pretty good idea really but I am not sure that you would want to do it earlier than that for one extra game in 34

Sorry mate. You're too late to post your opinion. Apparently this Hot Topic is closed 😆

FWIW I'm not selling Salah till GW36, though that's entirely because I've changed strategy and will be WCing then instead of pre-GW34. Would probably disagree that it's not worth selling for the extra GW in 34 if you're in the position to do so. Time will tell

    DDG Fabianski
    Smalling Christensen Tarkowski Morgan Naughton

Why is Ramsay not getting any love in the best midfield to close the season discussion? Taking leave from Wales to fix a minor injury. Form (bagged a hatty a few weeks back) and fixtures. Arsenal's best midfielder this season by far. Will he really be rested because of the Europa? Surely they will want to go into those games on form with first choice XI firing as a team. I see him being a major player who looks like he could also offer massive differential. Or am I missing something?

Looking at next 3 fixtures and found Spurs have 2 away difficult fixtures.
Sons will be heavily marked and might be struggling at striker position like

MU with favourable fixtures and MCity in Champion chasing mode.

Patience and kind Comments would be so much appreciated on teams with

I also got me hair dyed in multiple colours (when I retired) and had it shaved off in the office for charity.

I'd hate to dampen your spirits but £10K is an ambitious target, but I wish you the very best of luck.
(Incidentally, said daughter off to climb Kilimanjaro this Easter holiday. For charity. She's raised £1K)

Sorry RTH - I've just realised my response could be construed as a request for sponsorship but it wasn't meant as such. Please don't feel obliged.

It wasn’t. Please link. I give 20% of my salary to charity anyway.

That makes me feel very humble - 20% is incredibly generous,

That's a noble sentiment. Be sure to send me the link when you've set it up.

It sounds like a great cause but where are you going to find 100 people called Mike?

Smartarsedness aside, I've no real knowledge of pros or cons of either of those but be sure to flag it up once it's up and running, no doubt you'll get plenty of donations from here 🙂

Bag packing at Asda was a good source of donations when the wife raised money to go to Machu Pichu

FFS Football Pub Quiz in your pub

Get the pub to "sponsor" it by letting you book out the pub and provide a free barbeque.

£10 entry fee per person, half to charity, half to prizes.

Mark, Granville etc to do a special live podcast as part of the event.

Could have other fundraising stuff as part of it - auction, raffle, whatever.

You could ask Peter K (organised the FFS charity match) for insight
