Welcome to the latest in a series of regular Rate My Wildcard Team articles that will be published at key points during the season when Fantasy Premier League managers are most likely to consider using this chip.

This article showcases my thoughts on my current wildcard team to get the discussion started. Hopefully some of the issues I’m facing will be familiar to others currently wildcarding.

My wildcard team is based on deploying a Bench Boost chip in double Gameweek 34, Free Hit chip in the following week’s limited set of matches, and then the Triple Captain chip in Gameweek 37, when further double fixtures look highly likely.

With my chip strategy in mind there is a lot to juggle.

I need to ensure I can put out as many players with two fixtures as possible for Gameweek 34’s bench boost, ensure I have a credible XI for Gameweek 37’s double fixtures and make sure I can afford to bring in Harry Kane later in the season within two moves. Thankfully I still have my Free Hit chip which takes out the problem of key double fixture assets missing Gameweek 35.

Feel free to use this article thread to put forward your wildcard teams and to help others with their wildcard related issues. Perhaps it may be useful when submitting your wildcard team to let the community know what your chip strategy is as well.

Jonty’s Wildcard Team

Key issues

  • My current draft locks in a move ahead of Gameweek 34. Arsenal striker Pierre- Emerick Aubameyang’s Gameweek 32 and 33 fixtures look too good, plus he is nailed on to start due to being cup tied for the Gunners’ Europa exploits. I’m looking to move him to Jamie Vardy in Gameweek 34, but should I just get the Leicester man in now and avoid locking myself into a transfer too early?
  • Firmino has gone from my team and his hefty profit cashed in. I feel he may be prone to some rotation around Liverpool’s Champions League clashes with Manchester City. In addition, the lure of double Gameweek players looks too strong. Are Firmino owners wrong to jettison him ahead of still strong fixtures for the Reds and with his excellent form in mind?
  • Burnley and Brighton look ideal enablers for my chip strategy. But have I picked the right ones? What I like about Brighton’s Pascal Gross is that he can be downgraded to a cheaper midfielder to allow the slot currently occupied by Aubameyang to become Kane. Downgrading Seagulls striker Glenn Murray is less easy with limited ultra-cheap strikers.
  • I’ve taken a punt on Cedric Soares from Southampton. He offers the slight chance of attacking returns. But should I go for Jack Stephens instead?
  • Is Marcos Alonso too expensive? Or is the Chelsea left-back’s explosive potential and all round points scoring ability worth the cash?
  • Is Willian actually nailed on. All Chelsea fans, football fans and Fantasy managers view him as a great asset but will Conte continue to start him over the season run in?
  • Is Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku really worth having, with just one double digit points haul since Gameweek 5?

Would be especially good to hear from those who are wildcarding now but have a different strategy to using the BB in GWK 34 , FH in GWK 35 and TC in GWK 37.

Use ft in gw 38.. 35 can be done with a few hits to field 10 easily.

i also like cedric over stephens, should be more nailed on with yoshida coming back.

overall, our current teams are pretty similar. i already have vardy in my team, and have used the auba cash to double up on utd defense with bailly. 3 utd players seem like a must with their upcoming fixtures.

Yep Yoshida worries me - partic over two fixtures in a week. Cedric seems to have no competition due to the utter awfulness of the Southampton squad.

We have the same team except I have Bailly, Kiko, Mkhi and Vardy while you have Duffy, Cedric, Gross, Lukaku.

I don't really like the Cedric pick because his DGW34 fixtures aren't very appealing (CHE+lei).

I'm planning to get Gross/Gudmundsson and Lukaku for DGW34 with Mkhi and Auba dropping out, but I'm wondering if you're planning to keep Auba for GW 34?

        Why do you say that?

Started the last 11 matches and has scored in each of his last three starts.

Be very surprised if he's dumped with that form and consistent role in the side.

I'm similar to you Jonty tho with slightly less south coast bias. I've gone straight for a DGW team as I know I'll need my FT's for whatever issues arise elsewhere. Note the double premium GK choice.

      DDG Courtois
      Alonso Bailly Lowton Tarkowski Morgan
      Salah Son Mahrez Willian Gross
      Lukaku Vardy Barnes

It is actually smart having Courtois and DDG since you probably have to save a million for switching Lukaku back to Kane in 37 if he is fit. Plus you get two great keepers for 34. Just awesome

I don't have freehit in gw35, so I am loading up on Man Utd Arsenal and Burnley defenders. Will then have De Gea, Man U defender, 2 Burnley defenders in gw34, your midfield, but Kenedy for Gross, and Vardy Kaku Barnes up front. Likely to have Kaku as TC. Can then build team for gw35 and get 11 players out. And load up on players for gw37, so I have 13 dbgwers. The fixture announcement completely blew me away, as no Arsenal or Swansea dbgwers meant a completely new strategy.

I'm wc now, will bb in 34 and fh in 37, currently on 10dgw in 34, with 8 ready for 35. Depending on form I can get up to 12dgw in 34 with 2ft.

Are you confident Barnes gets starts? At his price if he starts to get rested there isn't really anywhere to go.

Hello Jonty and the wider community. Just registered on Fantasy Football Scout Website. Have been enjoying reading the articles and regularly watch The ScoutCast as well.

Thought it would be a great idea to add my 2 cents to this wonderful discussion/article Jonty has initiated

I am also on WildCard for GW 32.
Looking to Bench Boost for GW 37
I have already used(wasted) my Triple Captain Chip on Kane
Plan to use Free Hit in GW35

      Below is my WC team

      De Gea Fabianski

Lowton Morgan Vertonghen van Der Hoorn Christensen

      Mahrez Willian Son Salah Mkhitaryan

      Vardy Aubameyang Murray

      0.9m in bank

The thought process of WC is as below

      1) 10 DGW players for GW 34
      DDG
      Morgan Lowton Christensen
Salah (non DGW) Mahrez Son Willian Gross
      Vardy Lukaku

      2) Vertonghen Fabianski Van Der Hoorn non DGW 34 but DGW 37 players who can be carried forward till GW 37 and who have 2 excellent fixtures in 37.

      3) Swap Auba and Mkhi for Gross, Lukaku in 34 (1.7m in bank in GW 34 with that swap)

      4) Free Hit in 35.

      5) Swap Lukaku and Lowton for Kane and any DGW 37 defender (not yet decided on whom to bring in, open to suggestions )

      6) With the above I can field 14 DGW players for GW 37 while using my Bench Boost team

Current rank 9905 overall, will this be a good strategy to try to enter top 2k by end of season or is it better to use Bench Boost in DGW34 where there is more assurance of guarantee of starts over DGW 37 when it i possible that title and relegation places are more or less decided and rotation kicks in

Would love to hear your feedback. Cheers

Only 4.3M, no DGWs but has great fixtures - BOU BUR hud CPA tot NEW mun.
Apparently preferred to Janmaat at RB, though he also plays as a RW sometimes - seems nailed on while Deulofeu is out at least. Bonus magnet too.

    Thoughts on this (0.6 ITB)?

    DDG - Ryan
    Alonso - Bailly - Kiko - Lowton - Morgan
    Mahrez - Willian - Son - Salah - Mkhi
    Vardy - Auba - Barnes

    - Auba -> Lukaku and Mkhi -> Gross/Gudmundsson in DGW34
    - BB in DGW34 with:

    * Ryan vs cpl+TOT
    * Kiko vs hud
    * Morgan vs bur+SOU
    * Gross vs cpl+TOT or Gudmundsson vs CHE+LEI

    - Lukaku -> Kane whenever Kane is fit
    - FH GW35
    - TC Kane vs wba+NEW in DGW37

Rotation isn't going to be risk due to FA cup semis for chelsea and spurs. Assuming so would mean assuming chelsea and spurs value the fa cup more than champs league next year. i just dont think thats the case. United maybe but then again Lukaku and DDG play every PL game with rotation, particularly for DDG, happening in the FA cup so far.

I was set on FH37 but after the fixtures announcement I reverted to mainstream. I can get the same team you have, but I’m not sold on the plan. You are committed to a number of changes already and this is likely to mean hits in two weeks’ time.

Yep...its that commitment to that move that worries me. But all being well if I get one high profile injury elsewhere they can be also be shifted out.

Key is having those two free transfers - which is a luxury GWK 33 wildcarders won't have.

I have low TV, so the 0.3 difference could be a factor.

Also, can we expect Murray and/or Barnes to play both games over the double?

A, because Barnes could easily be dropped for Wood/Vokes during the DGW. Murray on pens, too. And they are the cheaper pair

People goes for Barnes over Murray is just because saving funds or more points expected?

On their own? I expect Murray to score more. But it all depends on who the extra funds enable you to to get. If we're talking Murray and Gross vs. Barnes and Willian for example? I'm backing the latter pair.

Also what's the obsession with Morgan in all these drafts? Am I missing something? Simpson is 0.1 cheaper and offers the same (non-existent) attacking threat 😀

Simpson was injured, he's back now and he's first choice.

Not first choice. Full backs subject to heavy rotation.

          Morgan and Maguire are nailed.

But who is Simpson's competition now? Amartey? He's out. Can't think of anyone else.

Amartey due back early next month. Could even be back for GWK 33...but GWK 34 looking very realistic. That makes Simpson a rotation risk for the double.

Hmm, maybe but I find it unlikely to be honest. Even if Amartey is back I expect Simpson to keep his place, a bit like the Burnley right back situation: Lowton injured, Bardsley took his place, Bardsley kept it when Lowton came back. Then Bardsley injured, Lowton kept the place after Bardsley got back.

And that's assuming that Simpson and Amartey are as interchangeable as Bardsley and Lowton, which they're not - Simpson is the only natural right back 😉

We'll see. Enough doubt for me to swerve though.

Amartey (aged 23) the future, Simpson (aged 31) the past another way to look at it. With mid table obscurity confirmed could be time to start the youngling.

He is still first choice though even if he is a slight rotation risk... and with leicester being knocked out of the FA, I don't see why he would be rested...

Jonty, why have you not yet made those actual transfers? Are you holding onto certain players with value who you're too scared to jettison at this time? If so, who?

Like all Firmino owners I'm holding on for a while just in case.

      But he will go soon.

Of all the players I'm ditching he's the one with most profit - once transfer is made I can't go back. Scary times!

In the same position but I really think there is no justification for keeping him. Would prefer Lukaku and Auba if going more expensive and would prefer Vardy in his price bracket so no real reason to keep him but scary times!

Same problem. For GW32 and 33 sticking with Firmino seems the sensible option with Lukaku's form, will only make the transfer when price rises/falls force me to.

(Repost from yesterday - didnt get to much love)

Put the players listed below in order starting with the one you think will score the more points from gw32-dgw34

    A) Lukaku
    B) Sanchez
    C) Auba (no dgw)
    D) Vardy

    RMTWC

    Ddg / Ryan
    Alonso/Stephens/Morgan/Tarkowski/5M
    Alli/Willian/Gudmudgunson/Salah/Mahrez
    Vardy/Auba/Austin

Got 1M itb for auba to Lukaku ...Lukaku's stats don't seem appealing and Auba could outscore him in next 2.

Jonty, what will you do with all that extra money following the Auba > Vardy move?

Similar to yours Jonty but I've got Bailly/Vert instead of your Cedric/Duffy.

    De Gea, Ryan
    Alonso, Vert, Bailly, Morgan, Lowton
    Salah, Son, Mahrez, Willian, Gross
    Aubameyang, Vardy, Barnes

1m in the back to upgrade Auba to Lukaku in GW34.

I've the Aubameyang problem as well. It's either Vardy or Auba for me with Lukaku and one of Murray/Barnes nailed on as 3rd striker.
Vardy would allow me to get Alonso instead of Christensen, so it's very tempting.

you'd want vardy over auba for 34 anyway, right? i would just get him in now, especially if it enables alonso.

Yes, it's just the next 2 games are looking so good for Aubameyang.
Vardy's are good too but it's the triple up on them with Mahrez and Morgan that feels like it could be too much.
Also easier switch to get Kane later in the season with Aubameyang in the team.

    Courtoius/ Ryan

    Otamendi, Smalling, Lowton, Tarkowski, Morgan

    Silva, Salah, Mahrez, Mctominay, Cork

    Lukaku, Firmino, Aubemayang

No free hit, team set up to have DGW players but also decent amount of players in GW35, thoughts?

Hello, Jonty. I've blown my FH, but retain my BB and TC chips. What do you think of my WC team?

    Karius / Ryan
Dummett Bailly Mariappa / Tarkowski Lowton
Son Salah Willian Kenedy / Milivojevic
    Vardy Lukaku Aubameyang

    Cheers

    Same team as you but
    Jack Stephens instead of Cedric
    Smalling instead of Duffy
    Murray instead of Barnes
Sticking with Firmino & Auba until GW34 then they become Lukaku & Vardy - big issue is that locks in 2FT's but Firmino's form over Vardy looks too good to ignore.
