Welcome to the latest in a series of regular Rate My Wildcard Team articles that will be published at key points during the season when Fantasy Premier League managers are most likely to consider using this chip.

This article showcases my thoughts on my current wildcard team to get the discussion started. Hopefully some of the issues I’m facing will be familiar to others currently wildcarding.

My wildcard team is based on deploying a Bench Boost chip in double Gameweek 34, Free Hit chip in the following week’s limited set of matches, and then the Triple Captain chip in Gameweek 37, when further double fixtures look highly likely.

With my chip strategy in mind there is a lot to juggle.

I need to ensure I can put out as many players with two fixtures as possible for Gameweek 34’s bench boost, ensure I have a credible XI for Gameweek 37’s double fixtures and make sure I can afford to bring in Harry Kane later in the season within two moves. Thankfully I still have my Free Hit chip which takes out the problem of key double fixture assets missing Gameweek 35.

Feel free to use this article thread to put forward your wildcard teams and to help others with their wildcard related issues. Perhaps it may be useful when submitting your wildcard team to let the community know what your chip strategy is as well.

Jonty’s Wildcard Team

Key issues

  • My current draft locks in a move ahead of Gameweek 34. Arsenal striker Pierre- Emerick Aubameyang’s Gameweek 32 and 33 fixtures look too good, plus he is nailed on to start due to being cup tied for the Gunners’ Europa exploits. I’m looking to move him to Jamie Vardy in Gameweek 34, but should I just get the Leicester man in now and avoid locking myself into a transfer too early?
  • Firmino has gone from my team and his hefty profit cashed in. I feel he may be prone to some rotation around Liverpool’s Champions League clashes with Manchester City. In addition, the lure of double Gameweek players looks too strong. Are Firmino owners wrong to jettison him ahead of still strong fixtures for the Reds and with his excellent form in mind?
  • Burnley and Brighton look ideal enablers for my chip strategy. But have I picked the right ones? What I like about Brighton’s Pascal Gross is that he can be downgraded to a cheaper midfielder to allow the slot currently occupied by Aubameyang to become Kane. Downgrading Seagulls striker Glenn Murray is less easy with limited ultra-cheap strikers.
  • I’ve taken a punt on Cedric Soares from Southampton. He offers the slight chance of attacking returns. But should I go for Jack Stephens instead?
  • Is Marcos Alonso too expensive? Or is the Chelsea left-back’s explosive potential and all round points scoring ability worth the cash?
  • Is Willian actually nailed on. All Chelsea fans, football fans and Fantasy managers view him as a great asset but will Conte continue to start him over the season run in?
  • Is Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku really worth having, with just one double digit points haul since Gameweek 5?

Looks like alot of peeps going for De Gea. I brought him in my first wildcard in GW12. He didn’t bring in the points i expected. Instead he made my team weak due to his heavy price ticket. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s doesn’t play in gw 38, if Utd have 2 nd place wrapped up. Im currently wildcarding, am bringing in players who have something to play for.

He's a decent fire and forget option with good fixtures. If he doesn't play 38 that's not too big an issue so long as your other keeper is nailed. The price is questionable though, am also wondering if cheaper options are viable.

When I brought De Gea in GW 12, it was to have a nailed on keeper in a good defence. Very frustrating to own expensive keeper when clean sheet is lost and cheap keepers get clean sheet and bonus. When i have two rotating keepers, I tend to bench the wrong one. I will probably go without De Gea and Alonso. Having both drains a lot money. I want to have a balanced squad for remainder of the season.
My rank is terrible, I need to stay away from the template.
Im going to try something different and see where I end up.

My WC team currently looks like this, would love any comments or ideas please:
    De Gea - Fabianski
    Azpi - Monreal - Maguire - Vertonghen - Lowton
    Salah - Son - Willian - Mahrez - Kenedy
    Aubameyang - Vardy - Barnes

          Fab to Ryan?
          Monreal to Smalling?
          Kenedy also has no DGW.
Guess you're doing Auba to Kaku in 34?

            Thanks.
Ryan a good shout - has nothing in GW 35 though.
De Gea and Smalling - are you doubling up on Utd defence?
Not sure what to do about Lukaku. Maybe Harry back in GW34?
            Kenedy - any ideas?

Hi, I’d appreciate any feedback please on a strategy for someone without FH.

Plan is BB 34 and TC 37. As I don’t have FH, I need to plan for 35.

    Approach without FH;
Rather than load up solely on DGW players I’ve had to prioritise those with the best fixtures. So I’ve ignored Chelsea, and mostly Spurs (except Son).
Instead of the latter two teams I can get a few players who have a good SGW in 34 and play 35 (eg Arsenal). I’ll adjust this by 37.

I know arsenal are rubbish, but fixtures are good so I am betting on them until 35.

I’ll use FT to get two City players in for 35.

    DDG, Karnezis
    Mustafi, Duff, Dunk, Mee, Morgan
    Salah, Mahrez, Son, Mkhi, Gudmonson
    Lukaku, Auba, Barnes

    Or am I making a mistake? e.g. I could swap Mkhi/Kaku for Haz/Vardy

I am in same position re: FH, currently trying to balance my WC so I can have 10/11 DGW players for BB in 34 and will still be able to field 9/10 for 35.

For your team, I'm not sure why fixtures have ruled Chelsea out for you? TOT isn't fantastic, but then they have WHU followed by 2 very winnable games in a DGW. I'm going with Alonso & Willian atm.

I’m just not convinced Chelsea players are necessary (if you don’t have a FH).

Their fixtures over 32-35 are TOT, WHAM, sot, bur.

Whereas Arsenal’s are STO, SOT, new, WHAM.

Chelsea’s defence is poor, and Alonso’s stats have dipped. Also they’re not scoring a lot.

I realise Arsenal haven’t been any better, but for now I’m choosing them over Chelsea.

Exactly my strategy. My team is:

      DDG
      Smalling / VVD / Mustafi
      Willian / Salah . Mkhi / Mahrez
      Barnes / Vardy / Aub

Subs: Ryan / Gudmundsson / Mee / Christensen

I am ignoring Spurs and hope a suitable ManU midfielder presents himself - otherwise I am sticking and using FT in 35. Chasing in my mini league (38 pts) and the leader does not have WC or FH anymore. Will try to catch him berfore 35.

      Any advice?

Looks good to me. Going without Lukaku helps the rest of the team, I’m going with him for now.
Apparently Christensen picked up an injury so you might want to check that out

Why so much love for lukaku? Expensive, rarely hauls, United poor offensively - surely not worth the money over Vardy or even Murray with the cash enabling a much stronger squad elsewhere.

I can see the value in Auba to lukaku in 34, perhaps.

The case for Eriksen over Son for pre 34 wildcarders

    • Son may soon be a rotation risk again, spending a transfer to fix his position is inefficient consisting all the other stuff that may pop up in the interim between now and 38, including a Kane in move that will occupy most people's plans.
    • If we work under the assumption that when Kane comes back, he will be desperate to win back the Golden Boot and be raining goals into the net until the end of the season, it is likely to be Eriksen assisting him not Son, and Son's potential to score goals will be lessened by Kanes greed.

    My WC team:
    DDG Hennessey
    Lascelles Lowton Morgan Alonso Zanka
    Willian Son Mahrez Salah Mkhi
    Aubameyang Vardy Barnes

My strategy to bring back Kane for the DGW is Mkhi > Gudmunsson and Aubameyang > Kane.
How does it sound and do I need to make any changes?

    DDG/Ryan
    Christensen/Morgan/Lowton/Bailly/Trippier
    Salah/Miki/Willian/Gudmunsson/Mahrez
    Auba/Vardy/Barnes

    GW 33 Miki > Son
    GW 34 Auba > Kane/Lukaku Use BB

Wildcarding 32, BB 34, Free Hit 35 and TC used already.

    Wildcard team of:
    DDG , Ryan
    Alonso, Cedric, Morgan, Duffy, Tarkowski
    Salah, Mahrez, Son, Willian, Matic
    Lukaku, Aubam, Murray

Vardy to come in for Aubam (34)

    Thoughts please?

    Such as... Stephens for Cedric?
    Gross > Murray?
    Alonso essential?
    Lowton for Tarkowski?
    Better enablers than Matic?

      1) Not sure I trust Soton defense
      2) flip a coin
      3) no, depends how you invest the extra though
      4) I've gone for both
      5) probably, few in that range is going to deliver more than 2/3 ppm though

Soton have 2 double games however (despite how bad they are). Alonso could go really big at any time though.. Lowton looks great for that price but reckon he’ll get rotated ?

    De Gea, Ryan
    Smalling, Alonso, Morgan (Tarkowski, Lowton)
    Mahrez, Salah, Willian, Son (King)
    Auba, Vardy, Firm

Plan is Auba and Firm to Kaku and Barnes/Murray for 34 to give 13 DGWrs, and also sets me up with 9 doublers for 37 (with 2FTs left).

    Cheers

I had willian but could not afford alonso, So I have opted for alonso over willian. I have mariappa for a long time now and he is the only 4m defender worth it (as far as I know).

Looks great other than Marriapa but I understand he frees up funds

Would be good if every rmwct poster would rate a few teams. All I see is posts with no replies. It's boring for non wildcarders to see the same template team everywhere. Help each other

      Madness, I know, but...

Could I possibly consider not getting Salah into my WC squad?!

Hear me out... in a fiercely contested mini-league of only four, two of the others have used their FH in GW31 and one has used his TC. All have WC left and the other three will undoubtedly have Salah in their WC squads for the rest of the season.

I have WC and all my chips left. Team is a bit ragged after GW31 so need to play WC this coming week really.

With Salah not having a DGW, is there a case for seeing if my whole squad can be something of a differential? Or am I just talking nonsense?

      Cheers

I looked at getting shot in 37 and getting back in 38. No way loose until then especially with him playing 35

Can we have some generic wildcard tips for those WITHOUT a FH?

      2 or 3 Burnley
      3 Pool
      Arsenal cover
      ...

See they don't play in 35 so I've only gone with Alonso and Willian

Just a thought on Smalling as United defence cover. He's out of favour for England so will be fresher than most.

Here's my WC team, can I have some comments please?
0.0 in the bank, no FH. Planning to use the BB during GW34, however, due to the no FH I still want to have enough players for a decent GW35 squad. My only question mark is if 3 Burnley players is not too much of a risk.. ?

      Ryan - DDG

      Lowton - Maguire - Mustafi - Robertson - Smalling

      Salah - Mahrez - William - Son - GudMundsson

      Aubama - Firmino - Barnes

      -----------------------------De Gea/Ryan---------------------------
      ---Smalling--Christensen--Lowton--Stephens--Morgan---
      -------------Salah--Sterling--Son--Mahrez--Gross-------------
      ------------------Lukaku--Aubameyang--Barnes------------------

      3-5-2, BB in GW 34

      Goalkeepers pick themselves imo.
Not massively keen on Smalling and Christensen, but worth the risk for their price I feel. Christensen's injury seems more preventative (and it sounded like he was in dire need of a rest after the FA cup game) so I think he should pull through. Smalling a bit riskier with Lindelof/Jones buzzing about.
Midfield pretty much as good as it gets, Sterling still my no.1 City target and want a player in for the next 2 as expect them to be going all out to win the league. Son likely to play up front, Mahrez with form and fixtures, and Gross coming back into my side like the prodigal son for his double doubles.
Lukaku building up some form even though United are terrible. He completes my triple United - they are out of the Champions League and will want to finish strongly in the league - double doubles and their fixtures make them the key targets to go for. Aubamyang with Stoke and Southampton next a real captaincy option - I may shift him to Vardy for the GW34 doubles - this would also let me do Christensen to Alonso, or Smalling to Valencia for extra security.

My WC team below. Welcome feeback/suggestions:

      DDG/Ryan
      Monreal/Lowton/Smaling/Alonso/Chilwell
      Salah/Mahrez/Son/Gudmundsson/Willian
      Murray/Vardy/Lukaku

      Thanks all

Why are people so keen on Ryan? He as Spurs in DGW 34, United & City in DGW37 and a dreadful run in.

      Isn't Schmichel worth the extra?

I personally got his as it's the cheapest DGW option, when I intend to play BB. Also, it's a good choice for me for GW33, when my other GK (DDG) has a bad fixture.
