Our series of members’ Monitor articles on Wildcard targets continues this evening with a look at Manchester United’s number one, David De Gea.

As has been the case for almost the entirety of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season, the Spaniard sits on top of the positional rankings and is the most owned goalkeeper overall.

However, despite that, De Gea has rarely featured at the summit of our Watchlist rankings until this point, with his two double Gameweeks and kind schedule now a major factor.

De Gea has accumulated 144 FPL points, six points clear of his nearest challenger (Manchester City’s Ederson), while an average of 4.8 points per match (ppm) is bettered only by Burnley’s Nick Pope (4.9ppm).

Amazingly, De Gea is now just five points short of Tom Heaton’s league-leading 149-point haul recorded last season – despite the United keeper still having eight matches left to play.

More impressively, should he maintain his current per-game averages, De Gea even looks poised to break Joe Hart’s single-season record of 166 points recorded in 2011/12 – when the City keeper combined 17 shutouts with 99 saves.

On the basis of these numbers, it would seem impossible to argue that anybody but De Gea belongs between the sticks of in our squads over the final eight Gameweeks.

Digging deeper into the keeper’s numbers, however, highlights a surprising decline in output.

I have 0.8 itb and could use this to upgrade SWA no2 GK to Ryan. But that money would be tied up in Ryan then, all for the sake of using BB in 34.
I'm wondering is it even worth the hassle and could that money be used better down the road?

Yeah, just wondering is it even worth it though and that the money might come in handy later as there is still 4 GWs inc a double after 34.

What will Ryan get you in the double and is it worth the cash ?
Can the same cash get you a better return by upgrading a player ?
Do you need to rotate your keeper - Fabs v City is not great, therefore should you get Pope instead for 34 & 35?
Is your bench even worth boosting in 34 if you have the likes of non playing keeper on it and should you strengthen it to boost in 37?

Not many are considering cheap keepers? The Members article (got to be careful here) seems to be avoiding a valuation? Yes we all know DDG is the best, but is he the best value?

    1. Hotdogs for Tea
      • 10 Years
      8 years, 1 month ago

I only consider value for my bench perhaps and higher priced players - anything else is very misleading if you are looking for an accumulation of points. Value is the vanilla of the ice cream world 🙂

        • 10 Years

One extreme is a team of highest value players, but that doesn’t work because you miss the highs of other players ... the nirvana of FPL. The other extreme is a ‘value’ keeper and your 11th player, which is good over a season and frees up some cash.

For the doubles and the run in, you really should be punting on players that get you the high ceiling points and not players for 4.3 mill that will get you 2.3 points a game, even though on paper it is ‘great value’ 🙂

            • 12 Years

Chances are probably high that we wont be able to afford a bench of 5m+ players unless we drop a premium spots 😮

By value on the bench I mean best value for your 4.5 etc ... although I do like the rotation of 2 starters from the 4th/5th defender and 4th/5th mid with a bit of ‘value’ in there to provide some choice 🙂

    2. JasonG123
      • 12 Years
      8 years, 1 month ago

Cheaper players will always be better value (on average) than more expensive players between the relationship between points and price of a player is not linear but logarithmic.

      1. Netley Lucas
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 1 month ago

Maybe, but if say McCarthy is going to be more productive over DDG in the next 8 games, value, should we ignore that?

        1. Hotdogs for Tea
          • 10 Years
          8 years, 1 month ago

Depends where you spend the saving - and if on a premium player then the value is likely to be less than ddg ?

DGW 34 Free Hit starting 11:

    Team 1
    DDG
    Alonso Valencia Maguire Tarkowski
    Salah Willian Mahrez Hazard
    Vardy Lukaku

    Team 2

    DDG
    Alonso Tarkowski Morgan
    Salah Willian Mahrez Hazard Son
    Vardy Lukaku

PS Both squads have only 1 playing (DGW player) substitute.

What do you think, Team 1 or Team 2? Leaning towards 1 as I think it's more balanced and Maguire and Valencia could be semi-differentials a most are going for Smalling or cheaper Leicester defenders, and Team 2 seems quite templatey (also not convinced Spurs will do well in that GW, no plan to get Kane at the mo).

Team 1 or 2, or any suggestions for improvements?

Any thoughts on my 2nd WC attempt? I have enough money left over to swap out the Arsenal players for Kane and a 4.5 DGW defender:

    DDG (Ryan)
    Alonso Bailly Mustafi (Lowton) (Morgan)
    Alli Willian Salah Mahrez (Ibe)
    Vardy Auba Barnes

At this time if the season it is all about the chips you have, so tricky to comment really

      Alli to Son
Spend some money on your bench to warrant the boost

    KDB and Barnes

    or

    Gudmundson and Aubameyang

I think if you have Son you really have to play him, but a tough choice due to the fixtures

    Morning.

    DDG Ryan
    Alonso Smalling Morgan Lowton Dunk
    Salah Mahrez Willian Son Groß
    Auba Firmino Barnes
    1,3 ITB

Auba to Lukaku for 34 probably

    BB 34 FH 35 TC 37

Any obvious weaknesses in my plan here?

What you got from 31 GW? Is it wort it to use in 35 then?

I am on BB34, TC 35 or 36, and FH37 with all big guns.

    c. save

    ddg
    Alonso vvd mariappa
    salah shaqiri stanislas pritchard
    auba firmino vardy

    lossl coleman francis la parra

B for sure , the Auba + Mkhi partnership was great at Dortmund and is already showing signs of been good at Arsenal

A, bit depends on the fixtures and how you set up your team

A + B is close with A just about shading it imo , C is far behind the other 2

Definitely A overall but if you have planned ahead well (and a hefty dose of luck of course) I could see Triple Cap obliterating it

Most don’t spend cash on the bench and waste the BB

Used in 37 when you can enhance the bench and not have to worry about carrying £££ forward, you could clock up an extra 30 points

Who would you dump first? Pritchard or la parra? Unfortunately both is not an option.

                  I’ve wildcarded. FH35.

If no Free Hit then probably wildcards later. Otherwise you’ll be stuck for 34 or 35.

Thankfully our league leader also has no FH!

He doesn't? You should be favorite to win it then with all your chips left.

Used his FH in 31. Fingers crossed. I’m sure we both have different startegies now so should be an interesting end.

                      Keep Pritchard, sell VLP.

I don't know their price tag but dump the one that is more expensive for now. Getting a hit out of the two isn't bad.

He is nailed fair enough but could still be benched. As huddersfield last match did not go well. Vlp I think was benched and could fair enough start the next. But the big question is when you look at gw32 fixtures do you see Pritchard returning points? If you do not, just sell, same for vlp. Ask yourself if pritchard does not return points will you be disappointed at the end of the day? If you wont then you can pick him, he could eventually.

Can't sell both as already did kane > auba with the ft. Think selling Pritchard might make more sense to get some funds itb. Cheers

0.2m short. Where would you downgrade?

    DDG
    Alonso, Smalling, Lowton
    Salah, Son, Mahrez, Mkhi
    Auba, Vardy, Murray

    Ryan, Gudmuns, Tark, Chilwell

    34: Mkhi & Auba -> Willian & Kaku

      Alonso

      Mkhi > Gross/Ibe...

Mkhi likely to be rotated with EL in mind, also gives you cash to upgrade 1 of your 2 burnley defs?

Can’t afford Willian in 34 if I do that - Mkhi is the cash cow to afford the Auba -> Lukaku move in 34

Fair enough.. then I guess its between which of these score more:

          Willian & Tark
          Gross/Ibe & Azpi/Christensen etc

If you go Ibe you have 3.0mil more than going Mkhi!

It would be great to see an article on double game week rotation m, GW37 compared with GW34, from last season 🙂
