We’re now just one match from the Premier League title potentially being won, and that fact (or something in the water) seems to have released a maverick streak in at least one of our Scouts.

The ‘expert’ panel of Fantasy Football Scout regulars Mark, Paul and Jonty and Career Hall of Fame dignitary Peter Kouwenberg have mostly gone for the usual suspects this weekend.

Mostly…

Jonty, in particular, seems to have scrunched up the template and lobbed it in the vague direction of the Fantasy bin.

How else to explain his decision to place this season’s points-sponge Mohamed Salah only fourth among his midfield selections?

After tonight’s injury scare at Anfield, it leaves us wondering if Jonty had some kind of premonition.

Nonetheless, it’s a big call, as is his placement of Wes Morgan above Chelsea’s defender-in-name-only Marcos Alonso in his backline picks.

Those two decisions alone should prompt bickering aplenty, relegating the Harry Kane first or second debate to a surprising best supporting role.

All will be revealed in the Scout Picks article later in the week, but for now, here are our panel’s selections and the reasons behind them for you to pick over at your leisure.

Paul Says…

Along with the host of usual suspects, backing Chelsea could be a good move this weekend.

Despite their downturn in form, Antonio Conte’s men have fired more shots (82) and efforts in the box (49) than any side in their last four home matches. Meanwhile, their visitors West Ham are ranked bottom for goals conceded (12) and big chances against (14) in their last four road trips.

With that in mind, Willian and Marcos Alonso get the nod in my squad.

They are ranked first and second for shots on goal for the Blues over the last four, with 13 and nine respectively, whereas Eden Hazard has mustered just three efforts by comparison.

I’m also doubling up on a pair of Watford players who were both among the points last weekend.

The Hornets have won three and drawn one of their four home matches under Javi Gracia, firing 65 attempts on goal – only three sides have managed more over the respective last four in front of their own fans.

Kiko Femenia profited from his out-of-position berth by netting against Bournemouth last time out, while Will Hughes supplied an assist.

When fit, Hughes has made an impact on the Watford attack.

He’s played a part in 50% of their goals when on the pitch, providing two goals and a pair of assists in his five starts. Indeed, with an average of 6.5 points per start, he can benefit from the visit of a Burnley defence with just a single clean sheet in ten attempts.

Peter Says…

Marko Arnautovic and Kiko Femenia came up trumps last time out, and only Glenn Murray’s spot-kick miss and an injury to Junior Stanislas really let me down in a week where the obvious candidates from Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United duly delivered.

Arnautovic and Femenia feature for me again as they continue to thrive in their out-of-position roles.

There are way too many doubts over City’s team selection and United’s approach to the Manchester derby to get involved there. For the record, I expect a strong City line-up and a 2-0 win to seal the title, but it’s definitely not worth the gamble.

In contrast, Mohamed Salah remains a shoo-in for Liverpool for the Merseyside derby, as long as doubts surrounding his Champions League injury scare are resolved. I’m disappointed not to be able to fit Andrew Robertson in too.

Arsenal’s home tie against Southampton and Spurs’ trip to Stoke are the big draws this weekend.

Granted, both the Saints and the Potters are fighting for their lives, but they have been on the receiving end of heavy defeats recently and face two of the top scoring sides in the division.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Harry Kane will surely appear in every Scout selection this week, though there may be more debate over which supporting cast to include – Christian Eriksen, Petr Cech, Ben Davies and Shkodran Mustafi get my vote, despite slight rotation worries for the last two.

I struggled to decide which attacking Brighton and Leicester City players to choose, but the home form of Pascal Gross and Jamie Vardy’s metronome consistency gave them the nod over Murray and Riyad Mahrez.

That may come back to bite me, but I do see the quartet heavily involved as they entertain free-falling Huddersfield and a Newcastle defence which can’t seem to replicate its outstanding home form on the road.

Jonty Says…

Many of last weekend’s Wildcard template players faltered in Gameweek 32, most notably Brighton’s Gross, Chelsea’s Willian, Leicester’s Mahrez and Spurs’ Son Heung-min.

I’m backing all to bounce back in style this time around as they enjoy much-improved fixtures.

Gross should find Huddersfield more obliging visitors than last weekend’s Leicester, given that the Terriers have conceded in all of their last 13 away matches. The German’s 5.9 points average at the Amex Stadium also gives me hope.

Similarly, Mahrez should have more joy against a travelling Newcastle side that has shipped 14 big chances over their last six away days, conceding 10 goals along the way.

Son did at least earn an assist against Chelsea last weekend. With a trip to Stoke he should do far better, particularly as he netted a 16-point haul in the 5-1 reverse fixture.

Willian’s six shots on target over his last four home matches, which is top among Blues assets, also indicates the Brazilian will reward our faith should we select him.

Elsewhere, Aubameyang looks to be the best bet for goals against a woeful travelling Southampton side that conceded three against West Ham last weekend.

If money allows, I’d like to see him paired up front with Kane, who is back from injury and scored a brace in that hammering of Stoke earlier in the season. Son should be an able deputy for Kane if our budget becomes stretched.

Mark Says…

After backing Arnautovic in last week’s Squad and watching him reward my faith, I so wanted to find a spot for him this time around.

It’s not easy to murder my Austrian darling, but while I see him troubling the Chelsea defence, I just can’t back him over my selected midfield five.

Indeed, there are few shocks from me this week, with my only real attacking differential found in my choice of strikers. Josh King just edges Salomon Rondon as my maverick pick having supplied a goal or an assist in each of his last three starts.

In defence, I’m still standing by Harry Maguire. I’m all about shopping for that 15-point holy grail (clean sheet, goal, maximum bonus) and, for me, he remains among the top candidates to provide such a return before the season is out. Newcastle United at home could well be the date in question – the Magpies are another side who have proved vulnerable at set-pieces this season.

Elsewhere, I wonder if Femenia will get the nod this time. On our bench in Gameweek 32, he’s proved his worth with his 8-points and looks a prospect again for the visit of Burnley. The Clarets have form, but Watford are solid at Vicarage Road with just three conceded in their last four at home, picking up two clean sheets. I expect few goals in Saturday’s dead rubber.

The Community Champion

Representing the community against the Scout Picks in Gameweek 30 will be BigRedDog, who is in his seventh campaign and has finished inside the top 100,000 three times.

The community champion who has the best lead over the Scouts during 2017/18 will win a £100 Amazon voucher (currently we can only offer Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com vouchers).

Last week’s champion, Bolleinho, beat the Scouts 81-74

The one to beat remains Gregor, who achieved victory over the Scouts by a 33-point margin in Gameweek 5.

Is it a daft move to go without Liverpool, if it turns out that Salah is out for the next game? 😆

    Thinking of:
    DDG - Ryan
    Christensen - Naughton - Tark - Lowton - Chilwell
    Son - Willian - Mahrez - Lingard - King
    Vardy - Auba - Kane

    Auba to Lukaku before DGW

      A) Gundo to Lingard (means keeping Firmino)

      B) Mkhi and Firmino to Lingard and Lukaku -4 (means keeping Gundogan on my BB or taking a further -4 to remove)

I'd obviously like Liverpool (or City) to win the Champions league but once again that elusive Barca vs Real Madrid final is starting to threaten to happen...

Big game for sure but that Barca/Real final is something that just needs to happen...

            United/Liverpool
            Dortmund/Bayern
            AC milan/Inter Milan

That would be living the dream....same would apply to Teal/Barca fixture or the others I listed above....It's a whole other level when it's major rivalries from wherever they are.

Spurs have scored 4+ each of the last 4 times vs Stoke. Kane is obsessed with goals and will be desperate for the golden boot. His motivation for goals at this stage of the season is different from Auba's. You'd never see Kane let a teammate take a penalty from him.

If Salah's out no problem, otherwise can't afford him + Lukaku without a hit - and prefer latter for 34.

That's my plan too. I was considering it anyway but it will cost -4 and that put me off. Salah has 6 matches left; 5 if he misses Everton. I'll FH 35 so i'll have him for that and can get him back for 38. If Liverpool progress in the CL he may face further playing time restrictions.

Eriksen has 7 matches and will likely play them all. Replace with Salah for FH GW35 and that is 8 matches to 5. Even for a hit it seems worth it.

My mind is clawing at the idea of bringing in Kane this weekend; a Salah downgrade rather than Mahrez/Son > Gudmundsson etc. certainly helps (... not that 6.7/6.8/6.9m is a great price point).

I'm on WC, and i'm almost certain I will sell.

Even if it was only a niggle, no way he plays vs. Everton IMO and I was considering getting rid anyway in GW37 for someone with a double. As per the above - I can bring him in on my FH in GW35, if needed.

The only thing stopping me pressing the button now is losing all that value as I had him from the start.

This could be the opportunity the GW33 WCers have been waiting for...

He's to be assessed in the coming days, we should hear by Friday. If its looking like he's out of the 2nd leg and beyond then its sell sell sell for me!

No doubt it's a worry, but I honestly think the pros of spreading his cash in GW33, DGW34 and DGW 37 outweigh this.

Can also get him back in GW38 if needed and he needs to score for the Golden Boot.

I'll be wedging him back in for 38 once he's fit.

36 could be prime for a rest if still in CL. Kane a very capable captain that week too.

36 is an early KO on the Saturday too. Klopp was bemoaning the early KO’s tonight.

No way, he will be one of the few motivated players left come the end of the season because of the golden boot. He had his rest when he was taken off as a precaution, he is fine and said so himself.

Seems unlikely to play vs Everton if there is any doubt at all. I'll gladly let my subs come on and have him back for BOU. No idea why you are assuming he won't play that match. I'll consider selling gw36 but was already gonna consider that.

More in the thinking of if he misses City I can't see him playing BOU.

See what is said in the coming days, if he's to be fit for the 2nd leg then all will be back to normal!

Definitely an option but if he plays he scores. 8+ ppg, on course to be the highest scoring FPL player ever and chasing the PL goals in a season record.

The alternative for me would be Alli/Eriksen or a City mid. Gonna be some tough decisions for sure. If he doesn't play in GW34 it'll certainly feel like a waste no matter how well my other BB players do.

Don’t mind if he misses this week, have a strong bench - either Lukaku (mci) or Barnes (wat) will come on.

As long as he’s back for Bournemouth no way will I consider selling.

As for GW37, he’s just scored and assisted in 30 minutes against City, so I think he’ll be fine against Chelsea who’s defence looks very suspect.

It's not just about this injury and how serious it is/isn't. Salah has run around like a maniac all season. In his last 10 games in the league (having played in all but one of the previous 22 games) the least number of minutes he has played is 82. He has played in other competitions and for his country too. There's a limit to what any player can sustain, that's now showing, and he his playing time will be very carefully managed from now on. And he has no DGWs.

Remember how fiercely Klopp rotated in the Premier League two seasons ago when Pool did well in the Europa League? Coutinho was protected and rested back then. Think Klopp will head that way with Salah with the Champions League at stake...

Salah has not been rested at all until last night. Firmino and mane always come off before him. Just a little tip from an avid liverpool fan. Salah is on a record season and he wants to play bad. The only way klopp rests him is if he is injured. I predict salah starts against Everton and gets 60 mins. He plays city and gets 60 min depending on score. Then he plays every game after that. If this injury is serious. Then he misses games of course. But it doesnt look serious and he recovers quickly typically. 8840 have sold so far. Hope it continues

This is probably the biggest concern.
Let's be honest Liverpool aren't going to have a chance to progress in Europe without Salah.
                            Pretty much guaranteed top 4.

Bit late to the party, but my tuppence:

I'm BB'ing in 34, despite concerns that the bench isn't the prettiest bench to be 'boosting'

If it even smells of Salah being used a bit more sparingly I'll probably sell - it allows for a much more solid 14-15 DGW'ers in 34.

Keep this week (Kenedy 1st sub) and assess before dgw 34. Could be my Kane enabler (instead of Son/Alonso) if he is going to miss out against Bournemoth. FH in 35 and bring back in gw 38. Stoke at home will be the hardest one to watch not owning him.

I'm quite likely to ditch after last night - the injury (however small) & Liverpool's now likely progression are about equally significant.

Until last night I was 100% keeping... the guy scores 50% more points than the next best alternative, so e.g. over 33-34, 2 Salah games were likely worth at least as much as 3 [assuming a DGW alternative] ANOther games, especially given the higher chance of rotation in a DGW, add in the cost of potential hits & keeping was a no-brainer.

But after last night Salah's likely total gametime over the remainder of the season has IMO plummeted, perhaps by as much as say 200, 300 minutes... got to go IMO, a risk of course but very much a calculated one.

I'll want kane and lukaku (c) for dgw34.

Instead of downgrading son to one I could now do

Salah auba and vardy to lingard kane and lukaku - 4....

You do have to query salahs minutes in some of these league games now....

I'm pretty tempted. If I downgrade to a 7.0 ish I can go Vardy > Kane along with Lukaku & Aubam.
If Pool get past City on Tuesday he looks like getting bench time around the semis.

I think selling Salah is perfectly good strategy, the problem is the lack of options to replace him. Spurs mids are the ideal replacements but personally I want Kane and already have Son and Vert so will be maxed out of Spurs.

Klopp won't play him vs Everton anyway.

The only reason he might play vs Bournemouth is for the PL record.

What a brilliant performance from Liverpool tonight.

However, massively sombre day when you see your Dad genuinely sad by the death of his footballing idol. Rest in Peace Butch, you will be missed.

Just read what Nigel Quashie said about Wilkins, genuinely moving. But what a top bloke. https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/most-heartfelt-ray-wilkins-tribute-12305292

Wilkins also got a minutes applause tonight in the San Siro - before the Milan derby. Top footballer, great man.

Solanke, Ings and the Ox against Everton?

Ah okay that's how we roll:

                                Mignolet
                                Clyne - Klavan - Moreno
                                Wijnaldum - Henderson - Woodburn - Milner
                                Ox - Ings - Solanke.

Henderson, Ox and Milner taken off at half time to rest (playing 8 man second half)

Solanke or Ings can start instead of Firmino, didn't say the whole team had to be rotated out.

but it's also a sensible precautionary not to play him again until the second leg.

Liverpool are the only team that have actually had a go at Man City this season. Big head to head games like that are where managers prove themselves as tacticians. Any numpty can send out the city team against stoke and Southampton. Guardiola basically out managed by a better manager with a smaller budget. Never even mind he bought Salah for cheaper than Bernardo Silva.

Peps CL wasn't exactly through his own work in my view. He got given the spain stars that dominated world football plus messi by rijkaard after rijkaard already won the CL. I could have won with that team

I just happened to see this. Spain Stars that dominated world football? Which ones? After Rijkaard won CL? (2 years before?)

I always wonder if people who say these ever actually paid attention to Barca the season before. They were third in the league, playing horribly, giving a guard of honour to Madrid at the end of that season before getting trounced 4-1. Rijkaard had lost his ability to motivate the side, and Ronaldinho was spending more time partying than training. I'm fine if you believe what you want about Pep. But Barca was not a great team at the time he picked them up.

Hasn’t Guardiola played scintillating football some of the best football ever played and only lost once in the league all season ensuring they can win the league on sat 6 weeks early? This tie not over yet

Winning this league early wont be that big a deal. He bought £250m worth of defenders alone this season. When he does it with Leicester, or takes a skint Dortmund to CL final, or wins it with Porto, I'll then be impressed

Is this squad ripe for WC this week - should I just get it Active already?!
Does City result mean a WC35 (triple up) could be seriously viable?
1FT 0.5ITB - WC TC BB FH all in hand. Cheers 🙂

                                  Think you're ok actually.
                                  Wait and see in Salah

Everyone was keeping Salah, despite lack of DGWs but if he's due to drop in price before Saturday and it's likely he's out then I'm seriously thinking of selling and as I will only lose 0.2

Only 0.2 - then I would for sure do it.
Bought him at 9.3 and will keep him

I probably would too, but got him for 9m.

Try to remember game is about optimizing points. Not making transfer value. Especially at this point in the season.
