Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Arsenal Fluff Audition

Newcastle underline their fine home form, while also showing up Arsenal’s wretched away record, in a 2-1 win that highlights the risks of opting for Gunners assets over Gameweek 35’s reduced set of fixtures.

Rafa Benitez’s side made it four straight wins to all but secure their Premier League place for next season, with goals coming from the in-form Ayoze Perez and Matt Ritchie.

It was also their fourth consecutive victory on home soil; a run under early threat when Alexandre Lacazette opened the scoring from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s assist.

The latter had been sold by 217,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers ahead of Gameweek 34 due to Arsenal’s single fixture, but the transfer tide is already turning in preparation for next weekend’s schedule.

Some 12,000+ managers have moved for the Gabon international as the Gunners have what had looked to be a plum home match-up against West Ham, making him the sixth most popular purchase of next weekend.

Aubameyang certainly has the form – he has now returned points in five successive Gameweeks and has six goals and two assists in eight matches since arriving at the Emirates.

But coach Arsene Wenger chose to station him on the left flank at St James’ Park, handing Lacazette another chance to up his match sharpness ahead of the Europa League semi-final as Aubameyang is ineligible to play in the competition.

He still looks sure to start domestically, but if Lacazette continues to get the nod as the Gunners’ central striker, Aubameyang’s appeal will lose some of its shine ahead of both Gameweek 35 and his side’s Double Gameweek 37, which involves a visit from Burnley and a trip to Leicester City.

At least those with the Free Hit chip to employ next week can bring in Arsenal assets without having to fret over their wretched form on the road, with Wenger’s team playing three of their final four fixtures away from home.

They’ve now lost five straight league away matches and haven’t kept a clean sheet on their travels since Gameweek 17.

Lacazette played the full 90 minutes at St James’ Park and has now scored in two of three Gameweek appearances since returning from injury.

He could potentially retain his starting berth for Gameweek 35 as the match is four days before the first leg of the Europa League semi-final with Atletico Madrid.

But Wenger has consistently rested his big hitters prior to European action, and Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil, Laurent Koscielny and Hector Bellerin didn’t even make the squad for today’s match.

Nacho Monreal did feature on Tyneside, but he and his fellow key assets will likely have their minutes carefully managed, if they feature at all, against West Ham next weekend, leaving us with few concrete options to exploit Arsenal’s appearance in the six-fixture Gameweek 35.

Geordies nearly sure now

The same cannot be said for Newcastle, who are as good as safe in 10th place and could provide some decent differentials for a run-in, like Arsenal, that also involves a fixture next week and a Double Gameweek 37.

Their schedule (eve WBA wat tot CHE) is promising, particularly if Chelsea reach the FA Cup final and rest key players in Gameweek 38 as a result.

And their form is excellent, with that fine run at home augmented by an overall record of just one defeat in nine Gameweeks.

Perez (2.0%) has now scored in three successive matches, having netted twice in the first 30 Gameweeks of the season.

In fact, he has a goal and an assist from his last two fixtures and, at 5.3, could come into consideration as a budget striker.

Strike partner Dwight Gayle’s pitch-time now looks threatened by Islam Slimani, whose impact off the bench helped them to the points against the Gunners.

The day’s other goalscorer, Ritchie (1.8%), has been overshadowed by Kenedy’s recent form on the opposite flank, but he has now scored in three of Newcastle’s last four home matches.

On the downside, both Gameweek 37 clashes are away; a fact offset somewhat by their home fixtures involving West Brom and a cup-chasing Chelsea showing erratic form.

Defensively, the Magpies have conceded just six times in seven Gameweeks since goalkeeper Martin Dubravka arrived – only Liverpool (four) are more resilient.

So for those still with Wildcards, Florian Lejeune (4.3) and DeAndre Yedlin (4.4) have an assist each to go along with two clean sheets from their last four starts, with the American recording only his second attacking return of the season in Sunday’s victory.

But why would you prefer Coleman over Baines? Thanks!

much more involved in attacking play I think, with Baines you rely on set pieces

A bit skewed, not meaning too much, fun bit of information.

Minutes played by Academy graduates in the Premier League this season:

    Arsenal: 6,055
    Man Utd: 5,196
    Tottenham: 4,036
    Chelsea: 1,890
    Liverpool: 1,240

Which 2 should go first for Salah and Sterling.

    2) Willian
    3) Mahrez

Need to take my mind off this horrendous gw. 🙁

How does this GW 36 WC look like?

    Ederson - Lloris
Mustafi - Smalling - Morgan - Fernandez - Van der Hoorn
    Hazard - Eriksen - Sterling - Sane - Arnautovic
    Kane - Austin - Ayew

Leaves me 0m itb. Hope I can afford it as only Sterling and Kane look like rising from that lot and i have Kane and will buy Sterling this week.

    Thoughts?

Would mean fewer players for me that's all. Then again the FH teams would also be weakened.

I'd be BB in 37. Hence the 2 premium keepers and Mustafi. Covers the 4 big defenses that way in that DGW. Bound to be points there somewhere. Don't see any other way to spend the cash.

Re Vardy, can do Hazard + Austin ➡ Vardy + Willian.
            Re Salah, see ^^

I quite like this, although I'm still a little cautious about Hazard. I'm just not convinced he offers enough above William to be worth the extra cash. I was also hoping to have Lukaku in the side...

looking at his heatmaps and comparing to other players that are forwards, Salah should clearly be classified as a forward. He has a more advanced position than almost all the top strikers. His heatmap looks most similar to Kane's, only difference is that Salah is almost exclusively on the right side.

He only played as a striker in the first half of the season, and Wenger was clear that he was going to play as a left winger. The purchase of Lacazette ensured that Sanchez was not going to play as a striker ever again.

Have you even looked at the heatmaps? Mane and Sterling arent even close to Salah's level of forwardness. Sanchez even less so. Salah has less defensive duties and a more advanced position than the player who is classified as a forward at Pool, Fimino. Salah is their forward for all intents and purposes.

How would properly classifying Salah as a forward ruin the game anyway?

Ive looked at the avg posiytions over the season, very very similar.

Salah as a fwrd causes issues. Two starting lfc forwards, what if you want both? Ruin might be an exaggeration but make Salah 15m it wouldnt bother me, reclassifying him just seems pointless to me

Mané is not a forward. Sterling could be a forward. He plays up top all the time, and is one of 3 players that Guardiola would use in a partnership up top.

The game doesn't get ruined by classifying more players as forwards. The price will always balance out the players, but we desperately need more forwards in the game. Picking forwards the last 2 seasons has been boring and impossible because FPL are too loose in their definition of what a midfielder is.

The supposed lack of forwards isnt a valid reason to begin reclassfying. In this modern tsctical age, almost every wide player eg salah sterling mane hazard plays infield, makes runs between FB and CB etc. So very narrow positioning.

We staty reclassyifing then we're left eith the bog stabdard definition of midfielfers. Cesc, surman etc

At 13 million it would come down to fixtures for me. If Liverpool have great fixtures at the start of the season it would be too risky to go without and you can easily downgrade and spread funds. If they have bad fixtures then waiting to see how he does would be less of a risk

13 million and a mid. Why?

Sanchez played up front and didn’t get reclassified.
When Arsenal got Laca that meant there were options throughout the team. FPL needs those options for variety.
Just because he’s so high up the pitch doesn’t instantly mean forward. As a Liverpool fan I’d rather him up there then back defending. I’m sure City fans with sterling would say the same.

Now watch him be 15 million and a forward.

Salah is no more a midfielder than Thierry Henry was.

Henry played with Bergkamp a lot of the time - a CF that often dropped deep, just like Firmino. Other times he played with a more orthodox CF like Wiltord. But there's no doubting he was a forward, despite the fact that he generally started left-of-centre and had been a winger earlier in his career.

Salah is even more obvious. I can't remember ever seeing him receive the ball on the right wing. He starts inside-right and veers central from there. He's a forward.

Look at salah heat maps for the season, predominately right side of the pitch ie winger/left fwd.

Henry played in a team with two wide players so he was the forward, salah has no wide player on the right as he is that player.

I really don't see the arguement that Salah is not a forward but a midfielder! No way is he, he is almost always the furthest player forward for LIV and has scored 40 goals for crying out load. If he is classified as a midfielder again next season that wouldn't make sense.
Common sense for Salah to be re-classified as a forward but it is not so clear cut with the likes of Sterling. If it is not clear cut, players such as Sterling should be left as mids.

Far too many players are classed as midfielders, it isn't realistic. I would change: Salah, Mane, Sanchez, Martial, Sterling, Sane, Hazard, Son, Arnie, Zaha, Chuopo, Andre Ayew, maybe even Pedro and Willian too.
The game uses the term 'forward' rather than 'striker', all of these are forwards and many have played as centre forward at times.
Introducing a defensive midfield position would probably be going too far for the casuals (who are needed in the game, at least by the owners of it).

As long as we get 5 mid slots and 3 forwards, players like Salah should be midfielders.

Otherwise, in the case of anyone with a formation like Liverpool, you have three midfielders and three forwards on the pitch, and an imbalance in how we can shape our own squads around that.

I don’t buy heatmap arguments one bit. Firmino is the striker and was correctly reclassified. Reclassifying Salah would set a dangerous precedent.

I agree with this but the scoring system has to be changed now for me with listed mids now being as likely to score as listed forwards, I'd have the goals scored set to the same four points but add an extra point to a mids assist tally. (Sorry went a bit off topic from where you started.)

You can't just inflate everyone's price forever. If there are more quality players then the prices have to reflect that. If Salah is 13.0, Kane is 12.0, Aguero 12.0, Lukaku 11.0, Sanchez 11.0, Hazard 10.5 etc (assuming all stay) then the game becomes almost unplayable.

For the first 10 weeks of the season the bulk of them were all options for our squads and were playing regularly. There was a period when many managers switched to a "big 3" up top. I agree with you that they can't just inflate players prices forever, but I think they have broadly got the pricings right for this season. Many players will rise for next season, but many will fall too. New options will present themselves. The fun of playing FPL is working out ways to react and cope best to extract the best points per million spent from your squad.

In terms of reclassification, Salah's clearly a forward. But modern football isn't so neatly divided into midfielders (who sit outside the box and create chances for strikers) and strikers (who get in the box and convert chances to goals). That's not how many teams work now, and FPL has no way to adapt other than classifying "midfielders" who play as part of a front 3 and are in the box as often as the number 9 as forwards.

Salah will be classified as a Forward next season and will be priced around 12.5.

Ignoring the tactical and positional aspects of things, the game needs more forwards. The choice at the moment is so limiting as to create template frontlines with very little variation. I'd be happy to see him classed as a forward.

Clearly an inside forward. Think a few of these types have been wrongly classified.

Inside forward, not a centre forward like Kane, lukaku etc

        Absilutrly.silly to reclassify him lol

He’s a RW on paper atleast, hence I think he’ll be a very expensive mid.

Do we think Pogba will start against Bournemouth? Awful transfer by me but the fear of having no united players and him being the only one I could afford to bring in with Kane dragged me in.

Pogba seems to view the whole game as a big joke, video game or a YouTube video. Moaninho doesn't do him any favors by playing him as a dm but his attitude is seriously lacking.

Is a 32pt lead catchable by the end of the season??
    Both have BB left only.
Player 32pts behind has 9players + TC Lukaku left this week V.S. 5players + TC Kane
Likely dooable by the end of GW38?
