The ScoutCast – Episode 258 – Freebie

Arriving in the midst of a lukewarm Double Gameweek, the latest episode of the ScoutCast is more intent on looking ahead as the entire five-man crew press the button on the Free Hit chip.

We’re back to full strength, as Granville, Jonty, Andy and Az join me to discuss our approach to Gameweek 35’s slimline schedule, inspired by another round of your community questions.

That attacking riches on offer from Manchester City and Liverpool dominate the early chatter, as we give our take on the run-in targets least likely to suffer from rotation to feature for Free Hitters and the “chipless” this weekend.

We then pan for Gameweek 35 gold in less familiar territory, as we re-open the Coleman vs Baines debate ahead of their meeting with a Newcastle outfit perhaps already in flip-flops after four straight wins.

End of season template busters help round things off before we career into the regular weekend preview to offer early thoughts on the Gameweek armband.

This ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Tuesday evening. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

GW35 DS Stats, Clean Sheet and Fixture Odds.

Last week of the teams which had a double game week Manchester United stood out with 734DS and 286DS. They failed to beat a doomed West Brom at Old Trafford and lost 1-0 but then beat Bournemouth 2-0. With their only fixture of the week Liverpool (525DS) beat Bournemouth 3-0

Last week's stats can be found here:

Manchester City (836DS) lead the way with their fixture against Swansea, Arsenal (547DS) second with Liverpool (494DS) in third. Just under the radar Burnley (310DS) may well be worth looking at.

With Manchester United failing a clean sheet odds of 67% last week (surely must be some sort of record) it looks like we're at that time of the season where anything can happen. Will a team from the bottom show some form to escape relegation?

Had a good week last week hope you did too, hopefully another one in store for us all! Good luck!!!

Don't trust Everton. Newcastle haven't lost to a non-Top 4 team since Christmas. Their only defeats in the second half of the season have been to Man City (twice) and Liverpool.

Everton will not find it easy.

I gather these figures do not take many important factors into account?
For instance rotation or whether a team has an incentive to push for a win.
Towards the end of the season these are major factors.

Burnley’s DS looks good but they’re clean sheets odds are below Stoke’s. Will be an interesting match.

        Burnley 5/2

Why should United failing to keep a clean sheet be some sort of record?
67% means that there was a one in three chance that they would fail to keep a clean sheet.

How many times this season have the clean sheets been 67% or higher?
            Presumably not very many.

If there were more than a handful of such cases and you had bet in every such case that the team would keep a clean sheet, would you have made a profit?
I very much doubt it - the odds-setters aren't mugs.

From memory that was the season high so the first. Was planning on going back through each weekly post at the season end to see if any of the data (DS and CS odds) holds out.
It's the first season I'm using these stats and tbh I think drawing the "safety" line of 350 with the DS stats is the right course of action to take. At the moment I have no idea what kind of "safety" line I would draw with the CS odds and lump 3 defenders from the same team in but 67% would have been right up there!
It will be interesting (for me anyway) to see how many CS odds over 50% are duds...

Rather than calling it a safety line, it is probably better just to say that the defences with a better than evens chance of keeping clean sheets are those with odds of over 50%.

Clean sheet odds of 67% or more may not happen very often, but a clean sheet at odds of less than 33% would be a bigger upset than a spoiled sheet at odds of 67%.

You may be right in saying that, either way, I won't have any idea until I go through all the numbers during the close season tbh. I'm sure there will be instances of teams with odds of 33% or under keeping a clean sheet. In fact Swansea comes to mind when they were bottom and just started to climb out of trouble the Bookies imo were really slow to pick up on that so their odds were really favourable if you fancied a punt no matter who they faced.
Was thinking of ranking it something like:
Teams over 60% success rate= x% and then drop 10% for each tier and then see what that brings. What do you think, or would that be a waste of time?

Ignoring all other positive and negative sources of points (bonus points, goals conceded, yellow cards, saves etc), if the clean sheet odds for a team are n%, then the expected clean sheet points for a defender or goalkeeper from that team playing for 60-90 minutes will be 4*n/100, with a ceiling of 4 and a floor of 0.
These odds are for a single match, so are perhaps most relevant when playing your Free Hit; otherwise you also need to take other matches into account.
If you triple up with players from the same team, then you may hit the ceiling with all three or hit the floor with all three - so you would be taking a risk in the hope of a reward rather than playing safe.

I'm sure you will find that the bookies always make a profit in the long run, but it could be worth looking at the exceptions where you have reason to think that they have overlooked something and got it wrong.
In general however, it must be simpler just to take the actual percentages (perhaps slightly adjusted to allow for their profit margin) - perhaps your study might help to calculate how big the differences between the odds and the results actually are.

Great info, thanks for that! Could do something like what Ludo posted last week using that formula. This season has been amazing for me, learned so much since posting here. When I look back I do have to laugh as at the start of the season I wasn't even aware of price changes lol
That formula could be useful for BGWs and DGWs, or maybe even (time permitting) I could try and do a top 5 teams on a weekly basis.
                      Food for thought, thanks again!!!

People saying that you need to go big with your first XI and use bench fodder with the rest - on a FH.

      Good luck with that.

Liverpool and Arsenal have so much uncertainty around their line ups, added to City's strength in depth and potential rotation, the chances of you picking a starting XI are surely minimal.

this. we have seen enough rotation last gw to at least have two decent bench options this gw on FH imo

Right, massive whinge to get it out of my system and then I can move on. Basically a big 'Lol at me' post.

Bench boost played in a DGW and a red arrow.

Bailly not appearing at all means I actually only bench boosted 3 players and they managed a massive 8 points between them. That means there have already been 11 gameweeks where the chip would have got me more points.

Particularly exquisite points of failure include choosing:
Bailly over Smalling (16 point difference)
Lowton over Long (6 point difference)
Morgan over Chilwell (7 point difference)

29 points lost by choosing the (theoretically) more 'secure' options.

      What an utter shambles.

Anyway, onto free hit week - what can possibly go wrong? 🙂

Oh sure, these weren't my only mistakes and they're not solely responsible for a poor score - these are just the ones I feel miffed about because they feel like such close calls, the other mistakes were ones I'm owning as just plan bad decisions.

Obviously possible to do well in spite of these as you've proved handsomely! Great score!

Just shows how much of this is down to bad/good luck. I got 31 on my bench only because I picked players in my wildcard who had another DWG in 37. No other logic.....just a simpleton approach. Your history and current rank though shows the vast majority of times your approach works over mine and most other peoples for that matter! Chin up.

Cheers Lanley, I'm not disheartened (well, maybe a bit!) I've played this game long enough to know how much fortune can swing in either direction without any warning so I just wanted to get this off my chest as a bit of catharsis and then move on 🙂

I'd say Lowton and Morgan were justifiable choices. United defender was a slight risk with uncertainty that who Mou will play as all their center backs were fit. I did go for Vertonghen over Smalling because of that

I had a bit of the opposite experience with the BB being a great success but still a mediocre GW. A bench of Ryan-Gudmundsson-Long-Cedric scored 34 points! The problem was that the rest of my team scored 69 points after consisting of 11 DGW players carefully picked on WC32 with a decent TV/SV. To have this bunch basically scoring on average 3 points per game is a let down: De Gea-Lowton-Dunk-Morgan-Alli-Mahrez-Son-Willian-Kane-Lukaku-Vardy. When I compare with last year's BB, I scored189 points (this year 103 points and this year's bench scored more). Strange GW for sure.

In a similar boat. BB with what was supposed to be 30 games ended with 81 points, and a red arrow even outside 500k rank.

Not sure how relevant this is but with opponent and tactital minded Pep, it might be worth digging into the City line-up during the reverse game against SWA.

      SWA 0 - 4 City

      Ederson
      Walker - Mangala - Otamendi - Delph
      D.silva - Fernandinho - KDB
      Sterling - Aguero - Bilva

maybe the lesson to take from that DGW is to not to plan for one next time as if the FA cup didn't exist ? it hung over all the fixtures (4 teams were involved in the semi-finals- 3 with major FF assets) and it seemed to get ignored. I certainly didn't believe it would lead to this much rotation.
