While tonight’s Goodison Park clash between Everton and Newcastle concludes Gameweek 35, our sights are already set on the next batch of fixtures with the launch of the latest Captain Poll to canvass your views on the best armband options.

Newly crowned PFA Player of the Year and Golden Boot race leader Mohamed Salah (10.6) topped the poll last time out and is set to once again be a popular captaincy candidate, having delivered his 31st goal of the campaign at the weekend at West Brom.

The Liverpool winger’s home fixture on Saturday lunchtime against Stoke, another relegation-embattled side, also looks enticing. On the road the Potters have managed just two clean sheets and shipped 37 goals, with only West Ham (42) conceding more on their travels.

Interest could be slightly muted amid concerns around Salah’s pitch time, with the Potters’ clash sandwiched in between Liverpool’s two Champions League semi-final ties against Roma. However, given that there are four days between the Stoke match and return trip to Italy, the Egyptian is expected to retain his starting berth once again.

It’s worth noting that he has already delivered two goals and 13 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points against the Potters in just 23 minutes off the bench in Gameweek 14.

Roberto Firmino (9.6) could earn a recall to Liverpool’s starting XI after being a substitute against the Baggies. The Brazilian has blanked just once in his last six at Anfield, tallying four goals and a pair of assists in that stretch.

Sadio Mane (9.5) provides another alternative – he has started every league match since Gameweek 21, scoring six and assisting a further five along the way. The Senegal international has blanked just twice in his last eight outings.

A home clash with Watford means that Harry Kane (12.8) will go head-to-head with Salah for our armband attentions.

The Hornets arrive in dire defensive form on the road, conceding nine times in their last three away fixtures.

That bodes well for Kane as he looks to vanquish a run of form that has delivered just a single goal in six league appearances.

At home, he knocks Salah into second spot for shots (101 to 82), efforts in the box (64 to 61) and attempts on target, by 43 to 40.

Kane is currently the most popular player in the FPL transfer market, attracting more than 37,000 new owners.

In midfield, there’s no shortage of options. Christian Eriksen (9.5) has fired four goals in as many Gameweeks, while Dele Alli (9.0)’s strike against Manchester United in Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final defeat should also attract attention. He has three goals and a trio of assists in his last five in the league.

Son Heung-min is the third most sold midfielder ahead of Saturday’s deadline, yet boasts a fine home record. The South Korean has served up nine goals and five assists at Wembley, compared with three goals and two assists on his travels.

Manchester City have already scooped the Premier League title but, on the evidence of their performance against Swansea yesterday, they don’t lack the motivation to attack. Five goals without replay against the Welsh side could sway voting their way ahead of their trip to West Ham.

Gabriel Jesus (10.2) looks a likely starter up front, while Sergio Aguero continues his recovery from minor surgery. He had a particularly eventful game against the Swans with a goal, assist and penalty miss. Nonetheless, it’s now three goals and as many assists in four starts for the Brazilian.

Raheem Sterling (8.9) also impressed on Sunday, claiming a goal and assist on his way to 11 points. With returns in each of the last six run-outs, he drops by the London Stadium in sensational form and is currently the most bought midfielder.

Another Sky Blues option voters may consider is David Silva (8.2), who has assisted more goals than any of his team-mates on the road (seven) and has also found the net six times, a tally only Sterling can better (seven). It is also worth noting that four of the Spaniard’s six scores of 10 points or more have come away from the Etihad Stadium.

West Ham have been in obliging mood recently, shipping four to Arsenal on Sunday and 13 over their last six league encounters, with only Bournemouth conceding more (14).

The Gunners fielded a strong side in that Hammers clash but look likely to rotate when they drop by Old Trafford on Sunday, as it falls between their two Europa League semi-final ties with Atletico Madrid. This could see Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku (11.5) prove popular among voters, especially after registering four goals and an assist over his last six home league run outs.

Alexis Sanchez (11.5)’s headed goal against Spurs in the FA Cup at the weekend also puts him in the reckoning as he prepares to square up to his former club for the first time. The Chilean has a goal and three assists over his last four in the league and faces a Gunners’ side that have lost five straight road trips.

For those looking for a reliable differential captain, it is worth noting that Burnley’s Ashley Barnes (5.4) goes into his home match with his former side Brighton in exceptional form. The striker has scored and earned bonus points in six of his last eight league starts, while the Seagulls have only one clean sheet over their last six away matches.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 36 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

    My actual team is:
    DDG - Fabianski
    Robertson - Smalling - Tark - Chilwell - Naughton
    Salah-Son-Sterling-Willian-McArthur
    Kane - Jesus - Barnes.

GW36: DDG - Smalling - Robertson - Tark - Salah - Son - Sterling - Willian - Kanes - Jesus - Barnes, bench: Fabianski - chilwell - naughton - McArthur --> No Trasfert to do, but my doubts: Capitan --> Salah - Sterling - Kane and DDG or Fabianski?

GW37: i can 3 FT with -4 to replace barnes with lukaku, cut willian son or willian salah? for who?

Free hit has seen me gain 25 pts on rival and we are now level on points (yay). But my team is now back to the following:

    DDG
Christensen (Swa) Lowton (BHA) Long (BHA) (Morgan, Duffy)
Salah (STK)© Willian (Swa) Lingard (ARS) Mahrez (CPL)
Vardy (cpl) Lukaku (ARS) Kane (WAT)

With an eye on the doubles, looking at 1 or 2 of:

    1. Mahrez > Sterling/Eriksen
    2. Lukaku > Jesus
    3. Christensen > B. Davies
    4. Willian > Ramsey
    5. Duffy > TAA / Van Der Hoorn

All a bit of a lottery now with the resting of players (both in my team and prospective transfers)….any ideas would be gratefully received!!

Currently thinking 1 and 2 this week, and then a couple more for the DGW...

    Cheers all

    Next week...

    Alonso -> 4.5 & Gross to Sterling (-4)
    or
    Mahrez -> Sterling

Will probably just ditch Mahrez but if he scores big this week I'm going to be loath to drop him before a DGW where he's pretty much nailed on.

Well that could be said about pretty much any question asked on here 😉 Haven't seen any of Leicester's recent games so wondering if Mahrez has just been unlucky not to get points or if he's already on the beach.

I think I'm actually going to play Barnes and bench Auba this weekend! I could be left with egg on my face but I don't fancy Auba scoring at Old Trafford in a weakened Arsenal XI (more than likely)!
    Thoughts?

    1. MTPockets
      8 years, 4 months ago

I'd do that for a defender, not Auba.

But thinking about it, and forgetting about price tags for a minute, who has the biggest chance of blanking? Auba at OT or Barnes at home to BHA?

        1. MTPockets
          8 years, 4 months ago

Just think Auba's a better player. Mun have 2/8 last clean sheets (1/4 home) so not immune to conceding. But if you fancy Barnes should go for it, may well be right.

He's got 7pts four times in the past seven GWs haha! It's his consistency that swings it. Very slim chance of Auba going big at OT imo, but you never know!

i have both - sold alonso last night to fund willian to sterling, may well trade in valencia for a similar move by gw37 as i can see some man utd rotation in gw37 with nothing to play for and fa cup final looming (NB: my view might be tainted by having valencia rested in dgw34)

    Post fail
I think I'm planning to hold Lukaku for this GW as he may do well against a weak Arsenal

Considering Willian, Alonso > Sterling, up to 5.4 def (-4pts)

Would you do it and, if so, which defender?

    Current team:

    1FT £0.2itb
    DDG
    Vertonghen, Lowton, Morgan
    Salah, Eriksen, Son, Willian*, Mili
    Lukaku, Vardy

    (Ryan) (Barnes, Mustafi, Alonso*)

Alternatives are saving FT and praying City assets don't haul or doing just Lukaku to Jesus

    Thoughts?

    1. MTPockets
      8 years, 4 months ago

'Which defender' is why I'm just keeping Alonso for 37 and hoping.

      1. Don Kloppeone

But it's the lack of Kane OR City assets that scares me this week.

At least Sterling would provide some comfort...

        1. MTPockets
          8 years, 4 months ago

I've sold willian/lukaku for jesus/sterling. Mostly wanted rid of Willian, Lukaku move more debateable.

I was also considering this move but today I've been thinking it could be premature and keeping Kaku could provide a nice differential if he scores well vs a weaker Arsenal

Willian has definitely disappointed recently though

No, not necessarily as Lukaku will be facing a probably weaker Arsenal as they'll be midway through EL tie

He could get rotated just as easily as any of the mids, in my opinion. It's not like City couldn't beat the rest of these squads with Sterling playing up top for a game.

I don't know about more nailed, but I suspect they'll play the same number of minutes, and I think Sterling is better value. I'll probably be going with both, but there's no way I'm not going with Sterling.

I think for me it's just that this idea that Aguero being out means Jesus has to play every match is a little short-sighted. With the attacking options Pep has they can get by for one match without Jesus, I'm fairly confident.

I tend to agree but I'm just making the point that the majority are switching him for Jesus and there may be less difference in their points tally this GW than people think that could provide a useful differential for ML chasers

Should I stick with my double Burnley defence (home to Brighton) or bring in a spurs or City defender this week (this is my plan prior to the doubles).

Which 2 do you have? Will Long be nailed (ie any news on Mee?)

Lowton and Tarkowski, so both presumably nailed

probably no need this week (subject to team news), safer to roll ft till next week and see what happens imo

    DDG (Ryan)
    Vert, Lowton, Cedric (Morgan, ALONSO)
    Salah, Mahrez, Willian, Gund (Grob)
    Kane, Vardy, Murray

    1 FT 0.0m

    GTG ?

I'm thinking save FT then Mahrez, Vardy and GroB to Sterling, Jesus and King for -4 next GW. Giving me the team below for DGW37 (Salah + 10 DGWers + another 2 DGWers who have poor fixtures on bench).

    DDG (Ryan)
    Alonso, Vert, Cedric, Morgan (Lowton)
    Salah, Sterling, Willian, King (Gud)
    Kane, Jesus, (Murray)

Bailly let me down big style on WC. Should ship for a hit this week or is there a chance he plays ? Smalling and Jones seems to be the preferred pairing

    Thoughts on this move?

    DDG, Ryan
    Smalling, Alonso, VDH, Lowton, Morgan
    Salah, Albrighton, Gross, Mahrez, Willian
    Lukaku, Kane, Barnes

    A) Alonso, Gross -> Sterling, Dummett (-4)
    B) Mahrez, Gross -> Sterling, Gundogan (-4) or another 5.9 mid

Going to TC in GW 37

    Cheers

      Lazy and soulless.

It really does make sense, add to the fact that you have Kane in and you can just forget about him, and it makes even more sense.

Yeah just put the armband on him and leave it there hoping for the sort of returns he produced this time last year at the stage we’re just coming into!!! Triple captain him 37 too

    DDG
    Mustafi - Chilwell - Christensen
    Zaha - Sterling - Willian - Salah
Auba - Kaku(c) - Wood (Henessey. Mariappa. Romeu. Smalling. 2.3 ITB)

I aim to do Zaha to Eriksen and Wood to Perez and bench Perez for Smalling. Good enough team for DGW37? I am not sure but I'd love your inputs

Sterling really was the man to go for this week over KDB, points aside, its the money. Much harder to do Firmino to Kane now.

He was a Fabianski fingertip away from a 17pt (or 34!!) haul.

Definitely looks the best City asset.

What does everyone think of Gundogan? Is he a starter? Seems fairly nailed in the City midfield recently..
