Liverpool make it to the Champions League final – with a touch of stress – but their key assets are fast losing Fantasy appeal regardless.

An extraordinary semi-final tie with Roma was, to all intents and purposes, won in the first leg, with the result confirmed early in the second, thanks to away goals from Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum.

That didn’t stop the match finishing 4-2 to the Italians, and the aggregate score reading 7-6 to the Reds, as a last-minute (and incredibly harsh) penalty decision given for a handball by substitute Ragnar Klavan kept the contest captivating to its final seconds.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will now face Real Madrid in the final, a full 13 days after the end of the domestic season.

That mini-break, and the fact that Liverpool are yet to nail down Champions League football for next season, should keep rotation off Klopp’s agenda.

But the team’s lack of a Double Gameweek 37 means many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have already seen enough.

Their two most popular players, Mohamed Salah (57.6%) and Roberto Firmino (37.0%), are the top two transfers-out heading into the penultimate Gameweek of the season, with a combined quarter of a million owners selling the pair on.

Neither impressed in Rome last night, with Firmino unusually profligate in possession, although he did set up Mane’s opener.

As for Salah, he was frequently caught offside and gave the impression of a man trying too hard to add to his 43 goals for the season.

The Egyptian has now gone scoreless in back-to-back matches for only the second time since the middle of October.

He’s failed to score in three straight matches just the once, and Sunday’s trip to Chelsea will be a tough fixture to avoid a repeat of that run.

Klopp has consistently stated that he will not rotate his side unduly until a top-four finish is confirmed, and he maintained that stance even in the immediate aftermath of last night’s result.

“Chelsea at the weekend is an unbelievably important game for us. I give the boys tonight; it’s cool, they don’t drink alcohol, but they will stay a little bit longer awake and then we recover tomorrow…We have two very important Premier League games then let’s go there (the final) and try our best.”

That doesn’t look like being enough to stem sales in the pair or, indeed, other key members of the side.

Left-back Andrew Robertson, who had an excellent match in Rome, is in the top four for transfers out, with Mane at six and both Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold also in the top 30.

The young right-back, in particular, had a tough time of it in Rome, though with Joe Gomez sidelined and Nathanial Clyne still edging back to fitness, Alexander-Arnold will still be expected to be on duty at Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool’s superior goal difference means that a draw with Chelsea will effectively guarantee them Champions League football for next season, which would make Gameweek 38’s home match with Brighton a dead rubber.

Fantasy managers are clearly not keen to wait that long, with Double Gameweek 37 players from both Manchester clubs, Spurs and, pending tonight’s Europa League result, Arsenal offering more clear-cut points potential than Klopp’s troops.

Those unwilling, or unable, to sell on their Liverpool assets can at least find some comfort in Chelsea’s poor defensive record of late.

The Blues’ clean sheet at Swansea City in Gameweek 36 was their first in eight league matches, and they haven’t managed a home shut-out since Gameweek 27.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have failed to score away from home only three times – and in six league matches in total – all season, although two of those blanks have come in the past four Gameweeks.

Is he definitely out? I've seen a few things suggesting that he is "aiming" for the FA Cup final, but nothing that positively states that he couldn't play in a week's time, and nothing official either.

    Thoughts on Son?

He strikes me as one of the most rotatable popular players this gamesweek, though it seems many people are happy to keep him around here.

It could be a case of "bigger fish to fry", but it seems to me that he is more sellable than the likes of Mahrez, if you consider the DGW in isolation (and assuming you will then sell Mahrez next week).

Son is far from guaranteed a return. Mahrez is far from guaranteed not to return.

Because Mahrez was at the same price point as Sterling. For Son's price, there aren't great replacements. Don't even mention Pogba

True, but that's not a major concern if you are making more than 1 transfer.

So it depends on each team then. For my team and I guess many others, there wasn't much that could be done. And it would require a -8 for me too

                8 years, 1 month ago

Yes it depends on each team. My question is whether people actually want to sell him, but "can't", or whether they don't want to sell him, basically.

For me, I've been more eager to remove him than Mahrez this week, assuming I will sell both over the next 2GWs.

Mahrez has downed tools and is on holiday it seems, at least Son will give 100% and most likely start one match and get 20mins in the other. Also he's expolsive.

          1. Deulofail
            • 10 Years
            8 years, 1 month ago

I'm not too worried about "explosiveness" to be honest. And if I were, I can see that Son only has one more double digit haul than Mahre this season, if that's how you measure explosiveness.

If Son is rested for the second game, I could see him getting 20 mins, but I could also see him getting 0 mins. With Mahrez, I would expect him to get 80mins in both games, unless I'm missing something.

Spurs haven't "downed tools", exactly, but they aren't in top form, either.

He is talking absolute bollox, he only cares about his team. And probably rightly so.

Smalling has played well and Jones has done well when called upon. Lindelof needs some gametime so Mourinho can assess whether he needs to use his checkbook.

This. If anything he has penalised Jones & Bailly for turning out too many times on international duty this year. Check the GW history.

Not doing too well with either Cech or Christensen. I can afford Cech to De Gea or Christensen to Alonso. What do we think?

Who do you think will get the most points in the 3 last gameweeks?

          A: Alonso
          B: Vardy

Some opinions greatly appreciated. Bench boosting.

          DD Fabianski
          Kompany Davies Maguire Fernandez Dummett
          Salah Eriksen Willian Lingard Kenedy
          Kane Jesus Austin

          A. Salah Willian Lingard -> Sterling Arnie Pogba (-8)
          B. Salah Willian Kompany -> Sterling Hazard Bednarek (-8)
          C. Something else.

Hazard vs De Bruyne for 37?

          Can't split them.

KDB more consistent, Hazard may haul but rarely has this season.

Me neither, add into the mix Eriksen too and I've got the biggest headache ever

I have Eriksen already thankfully, don't envy that decision.

Who's more likely to start both games as well is the question

              both will I think.

KDB has the game where they'll lift the trophy and then the last home game of the season.

Chelsea surely need to go for it at Liverpool, and then last home game as well.

                Good you have Eriksen.

Cool. I'm chasing, and because of that I fancy punting on Hazard, though I just don't know.

Thoughts on Willian and Christensen - both likely to play 1?

Help me with this: On WC:

          Fabianski. Elliot.
Smalling. Laporte. Long. Bednarek. Brad smith.
          Sterling. Eriksen. Pogba. Willian. 3.8?
          Kane. Jesus. Aubameyang.

3.8 midfielder needed which is not there... So please help me out to sort this out... Thank in advance

          Morgan -> Danilo
          Worth for a hit (-4)?

          Or just play Dummett?

Would take the hit, doubt Morgan will play, was shocking against Palace.

Playing safe with Kane depends if chasing or not.
