The biggest Gameweek of the season kicks off on a barmy Friday night on the south coast as Brighton host second-placed Manchester United.

Fantasy managers will be focused on the away side, despite the absence of their most popular asset, striker Romelu Lukaku.

The Belgian misses out through injury as Jose Mourinho hands starting roles to Marcus Rashford and Antony Martial in his front three. Juan Mata also comes into a much-changed line-up as Alexis Sanchez is omitted from the squad.

Significantly, Paul Pogba is named on the teamsheet once again. United’s form player, the Frenchman has three goals and an assist from his last four starts and goes into tonight’s match as the fourth most signed play having been snapped up by 140,000+ managers ahead of the deadline.

Elsewhere for United, Chris Smalling could be a key figure against a Brighton defence that has proved vulnerable at set-plays. The Seagulls have conceded 20 goals, including 14 from corners – more than any other side. Smalling has three goals in his last seven starts and top scored in the previous Double Gameweek with 15 points.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Well I really hope that result is not an omen of things to come for this GW. Think I'll go make a bet on Hud and WBA to win or draw vs City and Spurs.

I know the deadline was on a Friday.

When FPL placed the lockout, it would have already been 2am from where I am. I left the transfers really late. I didn't have much time to do research during the week because of work and family. But I already had 2 transfers in mind. Vardy and Mahrez to go for a hit, with Jesus and Sterling in place of them.

I planned to start the tinkering at 10pm. But before I did that, I wanted to make sure my 2 lovely daughters are tucked in.

Instead, I fell asleep and then woke up in a panic, fumbling for my phone to see the time. It read 3:20am and the kick-off had already begun.

I missed out the transfers, but I didn't forget to activate the BB chip which was done so immediately after the start of previous GW.

Now, I can only sit quietly and pray for City rotation and quiet DGWs for Sterling and Jesus... and hope for Vardy and Mahrez to finally prosper.

Positive takeouts I can take away right now is that I have a saved transfer, which means I can make 2 free transfer for GW38, probably a hit, a TC chip still to play... and Ryan and Dunk surprisingly brought me a total of 16 points from the bench

One of my catch phrases this sea has been if I did nothing at all I would have been better off. For example as soon as I would transfer a player out he would score following GW.

Atleast you compromised this by playing BB.

      Good luck!

Man, it must be frustrating to be a man united fan. Have splashed out so much money and yet offer very little. No creativity, no guile, no spark. Average defence, poor MF and below avg strikeforce, by European competitors standards. Hard to see anyone getting close to city next few yrs in league unless Liv sort out their horrendous defensive problems or spurs hold onto everyone and buy intelligently.

Yeah well it's not like he is ever at fault or will shoulder any blame.
But most utd fans see second place as progress. It's not they will be over run by city pool and Spurs next year and if Che get back on track they have no chance of fourth or CL.
That not to mention the muck football they play. Dinosaur.

Vardy doesn't score braces and spurs don't really concede. Liv might have to win that game to stay in top 4!

he scored a brace against Arsenal first game of the season , and believe it or not he actually has more goals than Firmino this season too , and has a knack for scoring against big teams , i wouldn't get him personally for that game but it would be just like him to troll all of his sellers by scoring unexpectedly

          1. andyd
            • 15 Years
            7 years, 7 months ago

C'mon man don't argue for the sake of it. But seeing as though u want to- firmino has 6 more assists with 7 more baps, in over 4 games (minutes-wise) less.
Leicester have been at the beach for at least a mth now which is obvious to anyone who's watched them, and haven't scored in their last 2 games. Playing vs unquestionably league's best defence, who've conceded 12 at home all season, Vardy is a horrible option, even if he has a penchant for scoring against bigger teams.

yeah i'd rather Firmino over Vardy any day , especially with those fixtures , but like i said he does like to troll unexpectedly so i wouldn't put it past him to score that's all i'm saying 🙂

Played De Gea and Smalling. Last DGW, they blanked in first game and got loads of points in the second game, so I'm still optimistic on getting something, from Smalling in particular. How do Man United keep conceding cheap goals against promoted / relegated teams tho? Agree with thoughts above on Mourinho ...

I think it's that Dgws with BB and TC worked out so well for most of us planning it the last 2 years, that makes this year (which at least for me is a major fail) makes it harder to take. It's like here is where I gain and it ain't happened. FH was nice though.

Bilva will play the second against Brighton so Sterling starts on the bench for this one but he can do plenty of damage with 20-30 minutes of action.

Although there's always a possibility that he could start as striker in the second fixture and Jesus could take a seat on the bench!

Salah has been outscored by many many mids since GW33 and has largely been held on to due to fear of what he could do and fixation with team value, but by the end of this gameweek he would have played 2 games less than other options ... it was a no brainier really especially if you had a FH for 35

The Scouts on here have drilled it into the community and point blank refused to sell Salah in and around the 3 double gameweeks even when Salah was injured ... perhaps that is why they will never win FPL and always be the ‘percentage player’ high finishers 😉 much better than me of course 🙂

Have to agree. Of course over the season all scouts are better players than me too but Salah out with injury CL etc was a no brainer for me. But we still have to say it could have backfired. Fine margins.
But on the flip side look at Marks current rank and obsession with Kane C for a long time means he must be nailing nearly every other decision tbf
Kane will NOT be in my team next year.

I replied to what jay said not your initial comment. Not leaving big hitter money wasting on your bench is a good rule on a lot of situations but for the reasons I wrote selling salah was very high risk.
As I said above I see the appeal especially for GW35 free hitters.
Also I sold him last week and likely won't get him back for 38

Bit of a sweeping generalization. I held him because he still represents value to me at 9.2m and his stats are still good.

It was just the gw 35 free hitters that it appealed to I think. With the injury and dgws they could get 3 extra games from an alternative

well you just said you held him due to team value?
His stats don’t really kick in when he is injured though.
Jay, on the only vlog I have watched, answered a question regarding what was the first transfer a guy should make .... the answer was something like ‘if you have 10mill injured on the bench that is 10% of your team value so deal with that first’ ... pretty solid advice imv and can be applied to Salah

            1. No, I said I held him because he represents good value to me at 9.2m. That's player value, not team value.
            2. He missed just one game.
            3. That applies for long-term injuries. I can let 9.2m ride on my bench for one week if I have a reasonable option to fill the gap for that week, which I did.

... umm ... player value forms team value ?

He was injured around the double in 22 too and looked like he was going to be out for 2 games at the time - that’s 4 games lost and the opportunity for points

Each to their own but we have seen Kane fear making people retain him when injured or not in form (me 🙂 ), and in the latter part of the season Salah fear too

When people talk of team value on here, I tend to think they mean protecting that 105.0m or whatever number that appears in the bottom right corner of their team page. That's not the same as keeping a player because they offer good value for the price.

He was out for one week in GW22. Again, it didn't look like he was not going to be out for long and it didn't need to force a sale.

It was not fear that "made me" retain Salah.

22 was a double where both Son and Eriksen got returns and Salah didn’t play - 2 games v zero games for Salah and he was likely to be out for 23 (he made it back though)

If you could sell and buy Salah back for the same price, to get extra games out of the alternative player and not have lost any player value, would you have done that ? Be honest now

I got 36 points from my four man midfield that week so I didn't do too badly from Salah on the bench. 🙂

But using knowledge you couldn't possibly have possessed when you made that decision (the performance of the replacements) to claim the decision you made was a "no brainer" smacks of confirmation bias.

So you won’t answer my question then 😉

2 games for Eriksen v Zero games from Salah will always be a no brainer for me and certainly not confirmation bias - done the Hokey Cokey 3 times now and it paid off each time:) oBut I was prepared to lose the .3 mill at the time ... different strategies 🙂

Different strategies are fine, but suggesting it was a no brainer for everyone is a bit rich. If it was an easy call, there wouldn't have been dozens of questions on here beforehand asking if it was the right move.

Some strategies work, some don't. If you think your strategies worked for you, well done. Unless you play with thousands of teams, you'll never know for sure whether all the choices you made throughout the season completely paid off or not. Therefore, the best gauge we have is probably OR and total points scored. And I'm sure you're ahead of me in that, so congratulations on having better strategies than me.

Enjoy the rest of the season and Salah's points in GW38. 🙂

My detective work below was unexpected. In 34/35 salah got 15 to eriksens 9. So buying the extra games failed. If the 33 hail was a no brainer then anytime salah misses one game in a sgw eriksen is worth - 8

The best player ever in fpl on the back of 5 goals in 2 games. He missed one game. His fixtures after that were BOU wba STO. Carrying an injured player is a strategic call.

              Strategy takes many forms.

Selling an injured Salah in 22 & 33 for Eriksen and getting him back after his single game weeks in 34 and 37 for 4 extra games overall ... is 25 points worth of strategy 😉

World No. 1 worked it out in 33 😉

Which is my exact point. Very tough strategic decision with potential for big swings. You really had to get the replacement bang on because salah in those brilliant fixtures was always gonna haul, and he did.
In my position it was an easier decision to keep because I wildcarded in Gw29 and was managing the dgws and blank gws simultaneously, also no free hit.

In 33 it was 3 games for, say Eriksen, and one for Salah with a free hit to get him in 35 ... no brainier for me and I didn’t even have a free hit left 🙂

Haha as you can see below I am not against selling salah. In hindsight I think I made the right call not selling him in gw33. I had Davies auto subbing in for salah. He puts up 4.9 ppg to Eriksens 5.5. He didn't play which was unlucky and eriksen got season high 15 points. That's a 50/50 call that went as bad a possible. Across 34 and 35 salah got 15 to eriksens 9 vindicating me. Then for you it's another - 4 to swap them again for 35. You paid 8 points for two extra games in 34 and 35 and that failed. Funnily enough it was gw33 that makes it a great result.
