One of Double Gameweek 37’s key players becomes another victim of West Brom’s unlikely survival bid as Spurs go down 1-0 at The Hawthorns.

Harry Kane went into the match as the most popular captain pick, with the backing of over a million Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers and 54 of the game’s top 100 owners.

Some 190,567 (49.3%) of the 385,000+ Triple Captain chips in play were also placed on the Spurs striker, only for a meagre two points to result.

After a couple of low-key performances from which he’d scraped by with two tap-ins, today’s match was at least a busier one for the 37.5%-owned forward.

He had five shots, all in the box, including one effort which was denied by the heroic Ben Foster’s head in the first half. No player has had more attempts in the Gameweek so far but there are no points for shots, as those backing Gabriel Jesus with the captaincy will gleefully point out.

But things could have been a lot worse for Kane’s backers as he came perilously close to scoring an own goal, with Hugo Lloris forced into a miraculous clawing stop to prevent major angst among Fantasy managers.

Spurs’ form has been on the slide since their FA Cup semi-final defeat at the hands of Man United, with a win, loss and a draw from the subsequent three league matches, while Kane now has just two goals and an assist in eight Gameweeks.

That hadn’t stopped 171,907 managers making him the third most purchased player, behind Man City duo Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling, heading into Double Gameweek 37.

The striker’s output at home to Newcastle now looks crucial to the outcome of mini-leagues and, indeed, the FPL crown.

But those hoping for a bumper haul to justify their Triple Captain call will be concerned that Kane has managed just one double-figure score in 13 outings now.

That’s a chilling thought for Kane’s supporters ahead of Man City’s meeting with Huddersfield Town, as Jesus and Sterling go into that match backed by 277,000+ and 264,000+ captaincies.

More significantly, they combine to make up over 144,000 of the Triple Captain chips in play.

Good and bad news at the back

Three Spurs defenders – Ben Davies, Kieran Trippier and Jan Vertonghen – were in the top 20 transfers-in for the double as managers hoped Mauricio Pochettino’s side would build on last weekend’s clean sheet against Watford.

Jake Livermore’s last-gasp winner put paid to that, although Vertonghen’s 10.0% ownership were fortuitous when their man was withdrawn before the goal, thus securing him points from a shutout.

But every silver lining needs a cloud, and the Belgian’s 84th-minute withdrawal with an ankle injury makes him an early doubt for Wednesday’s visit from Newcastle.

Mauricio Pochettino was unclear when asked post-match whether he had an idea on the severity of the setback.

“Not yet. We will have to wait until Monday. He twisted his ankle. Hopefully it’s not a big issue.”

At least he saw plentiful pitch-time. The team’s most popular defender, Davies (22.4%), was benched for Danny Rose as Pochettino reverted to a 3-4-2-1 in which Toby Alderweireld joined Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez in the back three.

Right wing-back Trippier, meanwhile, retained his place as Serge Aurier missed out with a hamstring issue.

Davies’ 1.3 million owners weren’t the only ones to fall foul of Pochettino’s tinkering as the 14.7%-owned Son Heung-min was another to drop to the bench, with Erik Lamela replacing him in midfield.

Should Chelsea beat Liverpool tomorrow and close the gap to a top-four place to just two points, Spurs’ recent decline means their midweek match with Newcastle could have much riding on it.

The Magpies will have considerably less to play for than West Brom did today, with any number of Fantasy managers hoping Spurs’ second bite of the Gameweek 37 cherry bears a lot more Fantasy fruit.

As for the Baggies, Everton’s last-second equaliser against Southampton keeps them in the Premier League. For now.

A Gameweek 38 trip to Crystal Palace doesn’t exactly inspire investment, although their backline has now kept three clean sheets in four battling matches.

Is there a risk Van Der Hoorn misses the next game? He was hauled off in the second half against Bournemouth.

If they decide to play 4 at the back then yes, they've got to win the game really.

Huge game for Swansea on Tuesday so the manager could spring a few surprises. Fernandes back so will depend if he is fit to play. Think Carvalhal will set up very cautiously.

If you have Kane(TC), Jesus and Sterling you have nothing to worry about. Yes you would lose a bit of rank if Jesus hauls, but marginal at most. Definitely the safe play this GW to protect your rank.

This. Wanting players that you own not to do well messes with your mind too.

Nothing to worry about? If Jesus gets a brace today that’s 36 points

But his EO is 116%. So nothing to worry about from an OR perspective. Kane's EO is 171%. Sterling is 103%. So really it is only Jesus who would hurt your rank (marginally) if you own all three.

Don't really agree with this, West Brom was always gonna be tyoe of game that's seen Spurs struggle with all season. Newscastle will play a similar style, Spurs should nab a couple of goals but Eriksen and Alli and Son could be the goal scorers just as well as Kane could.

The safe option was a City player as the face Huddersfield and should comfortably put 5 goals passed them. Sterling 3 double digits in 3 games and Jesus doing well in the baps. Even if they don't play the 2nd game, they can easily bag mid to high double digits in this game.

Their ceiling may not be as high as Kane's but he's blanked in 50% of games this season. He's lucky not to be on -1 after last night's game.

City player was always a safer bet imo. People fearing Kane explosions are forgetting about all the times he's blanked and he's clearly not up to the pace at the moment. Looked a shadow of himself last night, running around the playmakers onto the wing instead of sprinting into the box to get on the end of crosses.

Why even play this game if the aim is to protect rank ? Surely the aim is to increase rank ? (Cash leagues the exception)

England really should breeze through to the quarter finals this summer.

Panama and Tunisia do not have the quality for an upset. We then face someone from Group H in the R16, and Group H consists of Poland, Senegal, Colombia and Japan. Shirley!

I think it's then Germany or Brasil. So yeah, it ends there.

If the games were all played on paper, we might stand a chance.

However, this England team is just going backwards imo.

No cohesion, work ethic or togetherness (they pretty much all hate each other). All of these things are more important than skill arguably. Just look at Portugal, Greece etc in tournament football over the years

            Really?

I think we are progressing really well under Southgate. I love the 3 CB systems he has us playing, particularly with Walker at RCB. The 343 352 are great options and suit us perfectly.

Don’t take any team lightly. Scotland went to the World Cup in 1978 looking to win the comp and famously lost to Peru and drew with Iran. England lost to Iceland 2 years ago. Expect the unexpected

We will lose to a crap team because we won't be prepared. We need to defend well from set pieces, the counter attack and long throws. That will nullify our weaker opposition and then we can push the full-backs / wing-backs forward. Personally favour a 4-3-3 with Sterling, Rashford and Kane staying very high up the pitch and two holding midfielders to allow the full backs to push forward.

      1. Piggs Boson

That would be good if he had two DMs to play, and decent centre backs!

From what I've heard the England setup are changing and learning from past mistakes, promoting togetherness and strong mentals. I think it's promising.

Group H is a tight group all four teams pretty decent. Not sure England necessarily any better, if history is at it again and their performances doesn´t level what one should expect from the names on the team sheet. Poland and Colombia have some players that could cause England trouble, Senegal have Mané and Koulibaly, Japan seems the weakest team in the group but they usually puts in a lot of team spirit to it. Even though England have Kane, sterling etc we must also remember that Sterling is having a fantastic season with City, but he plays alongside de Bruyne, Silva... Kane scores a lot of goals, but who sets him up most of the time? Eriksen. Alli is a runner, Lingard is the same, Sterling to a certain extent, so the problem as i see it is the dynamic/lack of it, few players hat could make something happen. Ox and wilshere perhaps, but Wilshere is not Ozil... Dier and Henderson are destroyers and decent ballplayers but hardly the creative force they need. Then it´s slim pickings.. Lofthus Cheek?

Has there ever been a TC on a dgw player that has been successful? Which player was this and when? I just started playing FPL last year, captained Aguero who returned 9x3 points and this year Lukaku who returned 8x3.

I TC'd Son in the popular Kane TC gameweek this season (GW22 was it?).

I kind of agree. I think pep will rotate heavily in the next game, and Spurs have a great chance against Newcastle, but Spurs' form has been absolutely terrible. I'm hoping Jesus does the business today and hoping he plays midweek, but I'm not incredibly worried about Kane

I watched Man City play West Ham and they completely control the game playing tika taka. Create chance after chance. Spurs been poor away from home and have no fluency. Kane looks clumsy lately and being trolled with negativity. Part of me wanted to bring 3 Man City attackers in. They could win both games 5-0. So Jesus tc no brainer for me

Im not sure he will do too much rotation. Theyre till chasing the magic 100 points and need to win remaining games. cant see too much rotation happening

I'm glad the season is coming to an end this game has got into my head. I'm doing my business account and keep saying game week rather than business week !

If he does it’s unlikely he gets up to much

        Just want 2-6 points tbf.
BB is active, and Naughton 0 points makes my eyes bleed.

So with Sterling's EO at 103%, non cappers are almost indifferent about whether he hauls or not. But what about non-owners? Do we mind if he hauls?

Non owners like me need a blank big time. Less than 7 pts during the GW is a success for us.

Depends who you have in Sterling's place. You need that player to outscore Sterling.
