The latest ScoutCast brings the curtain down on another Fantasy season as we take the opportunity to navel-gaze and conduct a full retrospective.

Recent new signing David makes his debut, while Granville is a late arrival to join myself, Jonty, Andy and Az to form a six-strong crew.

We start by appraising Gameweek 38 to report back on a dramatic final day at the top of the Fantasy Premier League. We then take the lead from your final round of community questions.

Our best and worst decisions, our most disappointing and inspiring signings and early targets for next season are all revealed. We even consider the lessons learned to offer advice on cracking the top ranks – for what it’s worth.

Then, after another season of ScoutCasts, we pick out our personal on-air highlights.

We thank you in advance for sticking through this, our longest ever episode, and for listening over the last nine months.

Next season we edge towards 300 and finally reach the Last of the Summer Wine target. Then we all roll down a hill in a bathtub and off into the sunset. See you soon.

This ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Tuesday evening. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

If you’re a traditional type, you can acquire the mp3 audio version via this link on the first player below, or take in the full visual experience via the second player below.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Which players do you think deserve a position change next year?

    Milner - mid
    Arnie - striker
    Salah - striker
    Young - defender

      Milner and Young

Then with Arnie they should see what West Ham do in the market. I’m biased but hope he stays as a mid or he gets Josh Kinged

I don't think Arnie should be listed as a striker tbh....you could make the same argument for Zaha as well. Mind you, it would give us a few more options!!

      Arnie, Milner & Young.

Hoping Salah is a mid for 13m max.

Diabaté and Quaner to midfield. Both of them only play on the wing, and their teams use an advanced central player behind the striker.

Delph should be a defender if City signs a Touré replacement and no new left back.

Amartey should be a defender if Leicester don't sign a new right back.

Arnautovic - Forward, Milner - Midfield and Young - Defender are pretty obvious.

        Here's a few from earlier:

        Young > DEF
        Delph > DEF
        Zinchenko > DEF

        Josh King > MID
        Milner > MID
        Rashford > MID
        Welbeck > MID
        Rooney > MID

        Arnie > FWD
        Salah> FWD
        Rahz > FWD

Not great FPL options but Delph and Wan-Bissaka to defenders looks fairly obvious, Rashford to a midfielder perhaps to mirror Martial/Sanchez?

      Josh King - mid

Ryan Fraser played quite a bit as right wing back for Bournemouth, could be a stretch though.

Which formation proved to be most fruitful for you this season? For me it was a dead heat between 4-4-2 and 3-5-2, which initially surprised me, since in previous years I've always usually defaulted to 3-4-3. I would imagine this is the result of misfiring strikers, compounded with a general dearth in quality in this position overall.

I'm definitely going to consider a 3-5-2 option when I set my team up next season, with the flexibility to quickly switch to 4-4-2 when required.

you can check the average returns for each formation used here: https://www.anewpla.net/fpl/report/index.php

      3-5-2 (15 times - average 64.7 points)
      3-4-3 (15 times - average 57.9 points)
      4-5-1 (4 times - average 61.3 points)
      5-3-2 (1 times - average 66 points)
      4-4-2 (1 times - average 65 points)
      4-3-3 (1 times - average 54 points)

I’ll definitely be going 352 on the basis of last 2 seasons.

      4-4-2 (4 times - average 61.5 points)

      5-5-3 (Bench Boost - 90 points)
      4-5-1 (2 times - average 87.5 points)
      4-4-2 (7 times - average 60.4 points)
      3-4-3 (10 times - average 59.7 points)
      3-5-2 (7 times - average 57.3 points)
      4-3-3 (8 times - average 53.9 points)
      5-2-3 (1 times - average 49 points)
      5-4-1 (2 times - average 36.5 points)

      Combining these:
      4 at the back (17 times - average 60.5)
      3 at the back (17 times - average 58.7)
      5 at the back (3 times - average 40.7)

So 4-4-2 slightly ahead of 3-4-3 and 3-5-2 for me this season, ignoring the systems I only used once or twice - but next season may well be different.

Many of those who stuck religiously to 3-4-3 (which has often proved to be the best in previous seasons) have suffered for it. This is the first season I can remember when the most successful formation has not been either 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 - it pays to be flexible!

I'm looking to play 3-5-2 with my second striker in the third striker price range. Pump cash into midfield.

This is the key for me. 2 expensive forwards kills your midfield but if you can find a 6m Charlie Austin type at his peak then the midfield can be full of £9-10 million players

Amazingly I only played 4-4-2 on three occasions... averaged 81.7. Pretty sure GW31 was one of them.

3-5-2 & 4-3-3 next which highlights I need to consider starting with a more solid defence next season, maybe with cash in hand to adapt to Salah or Kane with no hits if needed.

      Ordered by average points:

      3-5-2 (6 times - average 75.8 points)
      5-3-2 (2 times - average 60.5 points)
      3-4-3 (17 times - average 59.8 points)
      5-2-3 (4 times - average 58.3 points)
      4-4-2 (3 times - average 54.7 points)
      4-3-3 (5 times - average 49.4 points)

I remember immediately losing out on 30 points by WCing away from my 5-2-3 in GW 10. Reminds me to play my own game, but at the time I forced myself into it by making premature transfers for Coutinho, I think, who ended up injured, among others.

Surprised I played 3-4-3 so often, since I tend to be quick to drop it when the allure of more consisten points can be found elsewhere. I blame Wilson. And also going Kaneless for the last 20 GWs (bar 3) allowed me to spreadthe cash up-top if the opportunity was there (which cost me points, especuially in the last 2 GWs - well...meh... at least I got Auba's points).

Anyway, as with chip-strategy analysis, I don't think we can glean much information to generalise to the next season. Just because Wilson trolled this season; doens't mean we shouldn't pick a Wilson-type at any point next season. It all depends on the prices of individual players, and of course the points that we see them likely to attain. 🙂

      8 years, 2 months ago

By the way, I don't think captaincy should be considered when comparing formations - for example, I got 162 pts in 14 GWs playing 3-4-3 from my captains, and 247 pts in 13 GWs playing 3-5-2.

Whether I play 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 I'm still going to captain the same player, because my 3rd attacker / 5th midfielder is probably someone I will never captain.

        • 14 Years

That is an interesting take. Should it be base points no doubling/tripling for the formation amounts.

If a captain has a big gameweek then showing the non-base score in theory sort of skews how successful the formation was.

        1. stat
          8 years, 1 month ago

I think another way to compare formations (for this example, lets say 3-4-3 and 3-5-2) would be to go through each week that one of those formations was used, and see how many points the team would have got if the 5th mid started instead of the 3rd attacker - though this has its limitations, since someone playing 3-5-2 may have a completely useless 3rd striker.

But I certainly think captaincy shouldn't be taken into account and I don't think it skews how successful the formation was - if we take the extreme case of Salah's 29 points in GW 31, if you knew what you were doing, you had him in your team, whether you were playing 5-4-1 or 3-4-3.

It's rare that you consider captaining a player that you are also considering benching, so formation doesn't play a significant role in who you are going to captain in that respect. But on the other hand, if you are playing with 5 at the back then that limits your options in terms of who you can captain (assuming you wouldn't captain a defender).

yeah, it's linked below by tambourineman. I sort of semi-finished it and then left it alone so the gameweek number was hard coded into the page, so it has been set as gw33 for a long time.

I updated it last night to include all 38 gamesweeks so should now be accurate and up to date.

          That's great, thank you.

I was also thinking of this one http://www.visualfpl.com/#/team/16628 although the team IDs are current, the player IDs are wrong (or somethings gone wrong as the names are not right)... Kane is Colback, and Salah is Hefele!

But yours is better anyway 😉

Also I really like your live BPS page, it's nice to get a breakdown and see the detail https://www.anewpla.net/fpl/live/bps.php?gw=38&fixture=372

I like the new design for FPL Statistico, I noticed you also corrected a bug on captains used, I think to do with when vice-captains were used... I noticed with Peter's report (ID 36298) there used a be problem with Sterling and Hazard having been counted as captain one more time than they actually were. It's now fixed, so thank you 🙂

Have a great summer, enjoy the World Cup

Oh, I have actually seen that before quite a while ago and it didn't even register in my head to what it was showing when I made the overview page. I never found those circles of different sizes to be visually clear to me what was happening. My page is ugly but it at least simply shows points. A mix of the two would probably be best.

The names being wrong is due to FPL changing their main file containing all of the player details randomly at some point in the middle of the season. If I remember correctly, it used to be a list in order of player IDs from 1-650~ and then they rearranged it so that the players were grouped in their teams, so the list would be like (player ID) 1,24,32,12,34 instead of just 1,2,3,4,5. Looks like whoever runs that site hasn't worked around that change.

I sort of half intend to redo my bonus site using the same styling that the new Statistico page uses and that detailed BPS page, I was checking stats recently and like 70% of the visitors are viewing on mobile and the page is pretty awful to view on a small screen.

Someone contacted me about the captain bug which was helpful. It turned out to be that if the captain didn't play, the VC would be subbed in, but if the player already had a bench that also didn't play the subbed OUT captain would still be in the 'starting 11' and I wasn't expecting that to happen. So it now checks to make sure the orginal captain actually played any minutes, instead of just checking they aren't in the first 11.

Looking forward to nrxt season and making it again one of the go-to websites for FPL data...

I think your page works very well and it is really good to see the numbers. The problem I find with visualfpl is that everything is so small, it's not really useful. Though one thing I like is that it tries to show all the gameweeks in one line, which is perhaps the one thing I would change about your overview page.

I tried to use the circle idea when analysing captains in one of the reviews last year https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2017/04/21/top-5-career-hall-of-fame-analysis-gameweek-33/ I liked it but it falls apart when too much data is put in. It's nice having the circle size vary according to the amount of points, but the problem comes when the circles get too small.

I wonder about the 'Owned' and 'Not Owned' stats in your overview page. Obviously we want to own players for the their good runs and drop them when they are out of form, in that sense it is useful to see how well (or not) we have done. But I feel we tend to drop players when they are injured or out of the side, especially the more expensive ones, so they will always tend to do better when owned. I also notice bench players are included in the owned stats. I realise you also have your Sortable Player table in FPL Statistico, and I really like the information you provide in this table.

Absolutely to echo G-Whizz, the tools you create are really useful! I like the new addition of seeing points scored in the different stages of the season, and well done on your second half surge!

              My totals are:

              1-19 1092
              20-38 1185
              1-10 527
              11-19 565
              20-28 531
              29-38 654

a strong finish boosting my rank. Interesting looking at Jay's totals, he really struggled after a great start:

              1-19 1187
              20-38 1156
              1-10 633
              11-19 554

A few simple ideas to mix it up next season:
2 players from a single team not 3
On its own would be good but to really shake things up only 1 defender or keeper and 1 midfielder or attacker from any team.
Chip idea: selection of chips that can be played each week. Score goal, get assist, clean sheet each award 1 point. However play consecutively and score 1 extra point up to max of 5. Has to be same chip played consecutively.

You want to spice up the game and particularly the use of chips? Change DGWs into two SGWs - one weekend, one midweek. No more hoarding chips for DGWs anymore....

Quite a lot of people say this and that they're taking a rest from fantasy football.

I don't really get it. Don't you enjoy Fantasy Football? Serious question. I just don't understand why people take a rest from something they enjoy. Is it because you want to watch without needing players to do specific things?

Yeah I really enjoy FPL. To be honest the not wanting certain players to do certain things is a big part of it. Mainly it's that I don't really follow football outside of the Premier League and the Championship so I wouldn't have a clue who to pick. Old mate on the last article put up the French squad and I recognise maybe a third of their players.

I guess that's a bit different then. Like all those people that are playing Fantasy Eliteserien. No chance I'm playing a game full of players I've never heard of. To me it just looks like someone has mashed the keyboard instead of typing the player names. Means nothing to me.

I know right. I swear they just make some of those names up.

My finger is so far off the international football pulse i barely recognise many of the Brazilian team. Folk on here will be cheering on certain players in the Russia-Saudi Arabia opening game. Can just sit and watch it and not give a monkeys either way. Let football be the winner. 😀

I like Fantasy Football, but don't support a PL team so have no conflict. But I want England to win and so it is annoying when you are rooting against them because you have opposition FPL players.

The transfer window is being moved back to GW1, but GW1 will presumably be at about the usual date.
I expect the FPL launch date (with the new player prices) to be a few days after the World Cup Final.

Sometimes a few prices get leaked or announced in advance, but I don't see why the transfer window move should affect either the FPL launch date or the announcement of new prices.

It should however mean that we don't have to worry so much about real-life transfers that take place between GW1 and the end of the transfer window.

The lessons I have learned this season are as follows:

    1) Take less hits. This is my worst season by far and I took many hits that just didn’t pay off

    2) Focus less on my rival’s teams. I got too obsessed with who other people in my ML had and who they were potentially getting that I perhaps lost the plot with mine?

    3) Go for a cheap defence again. I know Alonso had his moments and so did Otamendi but there is always hidden cheap gems like Jones every season

    4) Save my first WC for JUST before the busy Xmas period instead of blowing it in GW3. I WC just before KDB and Gross kicked into form

Hopefully this all makes logical sense for progress?

    1. Fantasy Gold
      • 12 Years
      8 years, 2 months ago

I agree with 2 and 3 but not the others.

It’s good taking a few calculated hits early on to jump on the bandwagons/catch the price rises.

      4) I’ve played my WC in GW2 or 3 every season I’ve played. Always served me well 🙂

      1. FPL Maldini
        • 11 Years
        8 years, 2 months ago

Well yeah the early WC is usually not a bad shout but I always get injury struck just before Xmas where I desperately need a WC

We desperately cling onto 2 or 3 bonus points at the end of a game for our players that it makes the -4 seem a rip off in comparison

    2. Syd.
      • 17 Years

The only one I agree with is 2

All others can be overcome by better planning and patience

    3. Limited & Mediocre Mana…
      • 10 Years
      8 years, 2 months ago

      1) 100% - of course hits can be profitable but in general they're -ev. It's more that if you find yourself having to take lots of hits then you're simply not managing your team well. There will be managers out there with the in form players at the right times without taking hits. You can't realistically expect to win with -100.

      2) Ignore rivals. Unless they're serious or they have a lucky season you should be smashing them.

      3) Preference. I think I'll keep at least one defender slot for a premium next season. It'll depend on prices/transfer window.

      4) Not really realistic. I haven't liked early WCs in the past (GW12 this season) but that was partly due to the overlapping transfer window making life difficult. If the window closes before the season starts then an early WC might actually be strongest.

      I took 14 hits. 9 resulted in a green arrow. 5 a red

Plus freshened squad and probably saved money, so hits not such a bad thing if used when needed

I’m going to make some bold predictions now for next season for players who will do well / be good value:

    Tosun / Kolasinac / J. Mario / Sanchez / Siggy

    Thoughts?

    4. Nascimento

Tosun seems an obvious one tbh. Kolasinac very much depends on who they appoint - if Arteta I expect him to become an even worse option. Sanchez should get better but I'm going to boldly predict, won't. Siggy's a quality player and has it in him.

If it makes you feel better Virg I dropped 50k places in the last 3 weeks! Would have been around where you ended up if I'd stayed consistent (was 20k after GW35)

Yep but if I'd made no transfers from then on I'd have been better off so no strategy talk please 😉 taking hits for City players that then got rotated is what killed me off (Vardy, Mahrez and Auba to Sterling, Jesus and Kane were, in hindsight, poor moves)

Ah well - it all starts again soon enough 🙂

They were obvious, logical moves to make. I wouldn't dwell on it too much.

Because he is extremely knowledgable about FPL. It's a good benchmark if you've been banished from the top 10K.

FFS you (and I) got 1 point more than him. That's practically the same rank lol. No self-respecting person would call that a better rank or achievement.

        It's literally a better rank. I don't have much self-respect though 🙁

I'm pretty sure Andy beat ME by 1 lousy point LAST season. Swings and roundabout!

It was still a helluva 3 days.

The Before trilogy is insanely good, though. Work of art.

Love the Before Series, Everybody Wants Some, Waking Life, School of Rock and Dazed and Confused.

Tried to watch Bad News Bears last night but accidentally watched the original version. It's supposed to be better anyway!

Cant really be considered a dead team if you used the bench boost chip in gw38?

That would never happen with a real ghost ship.

Seeing as how everyone starting their own versions of haul of fame, thought I would stick my beak in and have a go. Saw One where I was below people who had never even had a top 1k finish so designed one to redress the balance.
Only those with 4 x 1k finishes need apply

Why not consult people like TL to get their input and improve it?
