World Cup 2018 – Team Analysis – Portugal

Our Group B team analysis continues with 2016 European Championship winners Portugal, who will be making a seventh World Cup appearance – their fifth in a row – this summer.

Portugal’s curtain-raiser is against Spain in Sochi on Friday June 15, with this 7pm encounter between the Iberian rivals likely to be crucial in determining who finishes as group winners.

A 1pm fixture against Morocco in Moscow follows five days later, before Portugal round off their group campaign on Monday June 25 by taking on Iran in Saransk in another 7pm kick-off.

Road to Qualification

After their unexpected success in France two years ago, Portugal were brought back down to earth with a bump in their opening UEFA Group B qualification group match against Switzerland in September 2016.

Two unanswered first-half goals condemned Fernando Santos to his first competitive defeat as national team manager, leaving Portugal to play catch-up against group leaders Switzerland for the rest of the campaign.

Nine successive wins, including a final-day 2-0 victory over the Swiss, was enough to see Portugal through as group winners on goal difference. Just three teams (Belgium, Germany and Spain) scored more goals than Portugal (32) in UEFA qualification, while only England and Spain conceded less than the Portuguese (four) in their ten group matches.

Most starts: Rui Patricio (10), Andre Silva (9), Cristiano Ronaldo, Pepe, Jose Fonte (8), Joao Mario, William Carvalho (7), Cedric Soares, Joao Moutinho (6), Raphael Guerreiro, Bernardo Silva (5)
Most goals: Cristiano Ronaldo (15), Andre Silva (9), William Carvalho (2)
Most assists: Cristiano Ronaldo, Ricardo Quaresma, Bernardo Silva (3), Raphael Guerreiro, Gelson Martins (2)

The Key Targets

There is only one place to start. At £8.2m, Cristiano Ronaldo is the joint-most expensive player on Fantasy iTeam’s World Cup game, alongside Lionel Messi. Ronaldo is also priced up at a joint-high £12.0m on McDonald’s FIFA, but many Fantasy managers will be undeterred by the cost.

Only Robert Lewandowski (16) scored more World Cup qualifying goals in Europe than Ronaldo (15), who also provided three assists for his team-mates. The 2017 Ballon d’Or winner registered 26 goals in 27 La Liga appearances this season, scoring on a further 15 occasions in the UEFA Champions League.

Portugal were rudderless without Ronaldo in the 2-0 loss to Switzerland in qualification, though, of course, also played 95 minutes of their 2016 European Championship final against France without their injured talisman.

Whether Santos opts for a 4-4-2, 4-1-3-2 or even 4-3-3 formation is immaterial to Ronaldo’s prospects: the 33-year-old captain will start up top, probably alongside Andre Silva (£7.5m on Fantasy iTeam | £9.0m on McDonald’s FIFA), and be afforded the freedom to drift from centre to wide left.

Andre Silva has had an indifferent debut season at AC Milan, scoring only twice in 24 Serie A appearances, but his record at international level is exemplary.

The 22-year-old forward, who has been strongly linked with a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers, scored nine goals in as many fixtures for Portugal during qualification, a tally which included a hat-trick against the Faroe Islands in October 2016. He also scored in last night’s 2-2 friendly draw against Tunisia.

Santos’ preference for a narrow 4-4-2 or variations thereof, such as a 4-1-3-2 or midfield diamond, means that Bernardo Silva (£6.7m on Fantasy iTeam | £8.0m on McDonald’s FIFA) operates in a different position for his national team than the one Fantasy managers are used to seeing him play at Manchester City.

Generally utilised by Pep Guardiola on the wide left or right of a front three, Silva will be forced to play a more withdrawn role for Portugal in a tight midfield quartet. Despite his unusual deployment, Silva still managed to supply three assists in five qualification appearances.

Man of the match in the Euro 2016 final, Pepe (£6.0m on Fantasy iTeam | £6.0m on McDonald’s FIFA) will once again be the rock of the Portuguese defence. At 35 years of age, Pepe’s best days are behind him, but his importance to the national team was illustrated in March’s friendly meeting with the Netherlands: without Pepe at centre-half, Portugal succumbed to a humiliating 3-0 home defeat.

No Portuguese defender played more fixtures than the former Real Madrid stopper in World Cup qualification.

Rui Patricio (£6.0m on Fantasy iTeam | £6.0m on McDonald’s FIFA) is a solid pair of hands and a cast-iron certainty to start in goal, having featured in all ten of Portugal’s qualification matches. The Sporting CP goalkeeper has also been linked with a move to Wolves this summer, though Napoli appear to have stolen a march in the race for his signature.

The Long Shots

Cedric Soares (£5.8m on Fantasy iTeam | £5.5m on McDonald’s FIFA) is a familiar name to Fantasy managers and one that is often coupled with the word “punt”. The Southampton defender seemingly has the nod over Leicester City’s new signing Ricardo Pereira at right-back, having started five of Portugal’s final six qualifying matches and playing all 120 minutes of his country’s 1-0 European Championship final win over France in 2016.

Width from the full-back positions is crucial to the Portuguese team, given Santos’ propensity to funnel his midfield through the centre. Soares supplied three assists in his final seven league appearances for Southampton this season, highlighting his strength as a creative outlet from defence.

Another erstwhile Premier League player, albeit one who only made four appearances for Chelsea in 2009, Ricardo Quaresma (£6.9m on Fantasy iTeam | £8.0m on McDonald’s FIFA) is in the twilight of his career. At 34 years of age, the Besiktas winger will surely start Portugal’s opening group match on the bench and likely be an impact player at best. Should Portugal need to find goals in their fixtures against Iran and Morocco, however, Quaresma could see an increased amount of pitch time.

No Portugal player provided more assists in qualifying than the former Porto and Inter Milan wide-man (three), who was also the creator of both of Ronaldo’s stoppage-time goals in their country’s 2-1 friendly win over Egypt in March.

Areas to Avoid

Whoever lines up alongside Pepe in the centre of defence would seem to be an obvious weak spot. Jose Fonte and Bruno Alves (both £5.7m 0n Fantasy iTeam | £5.5m and £5.0m respectively on McDonald’s FIFA) have a combined age of 70 and now ply their trades in China and Scotland respectively. Fonte appears likely to get the nod, having started eight of Portugal’s qualification matches.

Overall, Portugal’s opening group fixture against in-form Spain would seemingly be one to avoid from a Fantasy perspective. Once that stern test is out of the way, matches against Morocco and Iran represent more appealing fixtures for Portugal supporters and Fantasy managers alike.

Chips strategy for Fifa McDonald's game. This looks tempting, if you can navigate the group stage with only 2 FT's.

Bench Boost round 4 (last 16). When you've got an unlimited amount of transfers to maximizes your chances of all your team playing and an increased budget of 105m.

Wildcard round 5 (Quarter finals). When you've got a measly 3 FT's to replace players eliminated from WC or injured/suspended in round of 16.

Maximum captain rounds 6 or 7 (semi's, final/3/4 place). When you've otherwise only got one chance to change out an under preforming captain with a player in your squad how was yet to play.

I agree with using the max captain late on and the bench boost before the qfinals looks a possibility, but the problem with bench boost for the Last 16 is that the vast majority (if not all of) the decent budget players will have been knocked out in the groups, so with a relatively tight budget perhaps you’re better to WC gw3 then bench boost in the same week (I can’t see anything in the rules that stops that). This way you can try and predict the inevitable rotation, while capitalising on the smaller teams who have easier games, ie Egypt, Tunisia etc

Or just BBing Gw1 or 2 then WCing after the Last 16 is also an option

This is the other option i'm considering, but starting 11's will be harder to predict at this stage. Wildcard after round of 16 for QF's is a no brainier for me, as long as you can keep it that far.

I'm also considering if it's worth using your maximum captain in the group stage, when the weaker teams are still in the
          WC.

The max C question depends on whether you would prefer to try and find and captain one of the biggest scores of the tournament or use it towards the end to captain a player you might not expect to get a big score - an out and out striker hasn’t scored in a WC final since Ronaldo in 2002, so the goalscorers in the final may well be very hard to predict

When most people in the final round will have used that chip and will likely captain a player that gets a 2pointer

Unpredictably of point scorers in later rounds is a good point that has been factor into my thinking. I just hope my initial selection leaves me in good enough shape after the group stage to take advantage of not having not used the chips, those who are are going in be in a great position to challenge for the OR.

Wildcarding in GW3 doesn’t look optimal imo.

Teams who are already through will rest their big hitters and there will be lots of dead runners

Surely that is a reason TO wildcard? In these game formats I have often used mine in GW3 with reasonable success.

You set up your first team for GW1 & 2 then WC for GW3 where you can account for dead rubbers and lose the players that may get rested as they are through already, then you get to fix your team again ready for R16. I haven't looked at fixtures properly yet but they can help or hinder this strategy.

        this

i have earmarked max captain gw2 my wildcard i can not possible say depends on how many players i own that get knocked out or i could even use it after gw1 if my team bombs
i think i will prob use BB in last 16 will just have had unlimited transfers and everyone should play who i pick

so are keepers and defenders, it's gong to be fun keeping under the 100m euros budget if the top keepers and defenders cost as much as CR7 (9m) and the cheapest are 5m

a full 15 players looks imperative given the option to manually sub out players during the rounds, so that's an average of just 6.666m per player with the cheapest likely to be 5m and most expensive 9m !

At the Euros 2 years ago, which was also run by McDs, the most expensive player was CR7 at 12m.

I believe that in these types of fantasy games, where there is only 6-7 gameweeks, the crucial thing for a good final rank is the start, or the first couple of gameweeks.

Another problem with this strategy is that from the quarterfinals everyone will have pretty much the same players, so there will not be much movement.

Although I agree on Maximum captain chip being used in the final gameweeks, haven't thought of that before this post.

Think I’ll be going for Maximum Captain in the earlier round (GW2-R16) as I expect games to be more open till then.

And will use BB in the later round as teams will more defensive and can maximise having an extra gk & 2 defenders.

Having thought about it since yesterday, my problem with BBing gw4 is that there will only be 8 matches compared to the 16 of the group stages, and they're all made up of quality teams playing each other, often with both sides scoring in cagier affairs. Surely because of this, more of your players are likely to perform the more different games they're playing in against easier sides, so BBing in the group stages sounds like a plan with a potentially higher upside.

You can change captain and sub out blanking players day-by-day in this game though (if the rules are the same that was up on that page). During the group stage there are six days per gameweek, so unless all your players score points you'll probably be able to bench your blankers.

But the same rules apply for the knock-out stages too. And if the more expensive teams will make the last 16, the more you will want to have a strong (more costly) XI.

Max Cap in GW2 for biggest upsides: gives largest number of big hitters guaranteed to play (no teams through yet) in the most favourable fixtures (semis/final won't be walkovers).

Admittedly, you could score lucky by changing captain by day during GW2 without the chip but..

I think for this reason I'm going to MC in the semi-final/final. I plan on having a big hitting fwd/mid to play on at least 4/6 game days in gw1/2/3, one of whom is hopefully likely to get a big score, even if its not my highest. In the final rounds, defenders are probably more likely to get higher scores than the traditional attackers so the max C will give you more of an advantage there.

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

With many top Premier League players going to the World Cup, how are you looking to adapt for the start of the FPL season?

If a World Cup team makes a deep run, will you avoid players from that team? Both attackers and defenders could be fatigued but it is arguably attackers who are more of a worry – which players are you concerned about? There is fatigue, of course, but having no pre-season to train with a new manager and develop chemistry with new players can also be a problem. Are players with new managers more of a worry?

Equally, players like Sanchez, Ramsey, and van Dijk will be fully rested and have a full preseason. Who else that doesn’t have a World Cup could be an option?

I'll probably plan for an early wildcard, so GW 4-6, to both get on any good-looking bandwagons and bring in players that haven't started the early weeks because of the WC (likely Brazil, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Colombia players....). Auba looks a good person to start with up front, as do Liverpool targets like Salah and Mane who are unlikely to make it out of the groups - very few of their key players look likely to get to the latter stages, with Lovren and Firmino two of the only real candidates.

Yeah, I think there’s a lot to be said for starting the season with some well rested players, makes Ramsey and Van Dijk/Robertson even more appealing.

Gareth Bale will be keen to impress if he does come back and the lack of a World Cup should give him an even better chance to get started on the front foot.

Think World Cup players shouldn't be ignored in isolation but maybe should in comparison to fixture lists.

      Examples:

If England have a lengthy run (unlikely) and Spurs have nasty early fixtures but Arsenal have kind fixtures then I'll look to Auba over Kane. If however Spurs fixtures are better than Arsenal then I may look to Kane over Auba regardless of Englsnd's progression.

Likewise if City fixtures are kind early on then I will want cover regardless of Sane / Silva / Sterling / KDB world cup progression. If however their fixtures are nasty then I may look to Zaha / Arnie / Ramsey as a placeholder

4 years ago, in my only ever top 3k finish, my success was due to allowing fatigued players into my squad only gradually once they had attained their form. My initial squad was entirely made of non-fatigued ones. I will hope to replicate that success with the same strategy. No fatigued player will create miracles in the first few weeks and we all know how important it is to find non-rotated players.

Have players who have deep WC run ins typically been rested for several games historically? Would feel silly to ignore all players that demonstrate excellent form at WC level otherwise.

Sanchez looks great buy if he comes around 10mn. Ramsey is short term punt with injury waiting to happen any gw. After how Van Dijk did last season compared to robertson people will be crazy to go with him over robertson as both will likely be equally priced 5.5-6mn

Hi all, I would like to run an office World Cup sweepstake. With it being £2 a ticket and a pot of £64 what do you think the split should be between the following:

    Winner
    Finalist
    Worst team
    Dirtiest team
    Team that scores fastest goal

    Thanks

Keep it simple so everyone can follow it. £40 for the winner, £15 for Runner-Up, £9 for third.

Thought this way would give a bit more hope and interest to those who draw lesser teams with little chance of making the final.

Maybe do worst team instead of/in addition to 3rd then?

Another option is have 64 tickets instead of 32 (each team twice), and for their £2 they get two teams (with the prizes halved) - doubles the chances they won't get a duff team.

      £40 for winner
      £12 finalist
      £4 Worst team
£4 Team that scores fastest goal
      £4 Dirtiest team?

Dirtiest team - team that receives most yellow and red cards in group stage

Oh sorry - that question mark was just because it was a suggestion, not because I didn't know what dirtiest team was.

You could also have two 'pots' and allow people to pick one 'good' team and one 'bad' team

Can someone explain to me how many matches are there going to be in the First 3 rounds of WC fantasy?

Looks like Round 1 is only 1st day?

Round 1 is the first game that every team plays (starting with Russia vs Saudi Arabia and finishing with Poland vs Senegal), Round 2 is the second game every team plays, Round 3 is the third game every team plays.

Teams currently on site are from last years Federation Cup but they have still had almost a year to prepare ! Relaunching the site without this years players make no sense to me.

Have signed up to The Telegraph World Cup Fantasy game but have never played any of their games before..

26 transfers seems a huge amount for the group stages, should I be picking players that have games on Day 1 / 2 and transferring them out for players playing afterwards to get the most out of so many transfers?

I hope they leave it as late as possible. The longer they take the more chance of me winning the whole thing.

I don't need to tinker for 2 weeks. I just need a couple of minutes. Ask the missus.

I'm surprised only half a million have signed it. At least 2 million would sign it if it was a petition to be allowed to lick Salah's backside.

Loads of people predicting a price rise for Auba but I don't see how it can be justified really. He's no better than he was when he signed for Arsenal - his record at Dortmund was a joke. Arsenal finished 6th and all.

Doesn't need to be justified. As long as someone at FPL saw what he did and thinks it's a good idea to increase his price then they will.

But knowing what you meant to ask I'd suggest them, Denmark and France all have a fairly even chance of making the last 16 - they should all beat Australia, and then its up to which team is better on the day against each other
