Midfielder Aleksandr Golovin (£6.5m) was the Fantasy star of the show as Russia thrashed Saudi Arabia 5-0 in the opening World Cup fixture.

He scored the fifth and final goal for the hosts as they registered their first win in eight matches, assisting another two of his nation’s strikes for a 13 point haul.

Substitute Denis Cheryshev (£5.5m) was not far behind Golovin in the match, scoring twice and amassing 12 points.

Budget option Yuri Gazinskiy (£4.5m) opened the scoring in the 12th minute, heading past Al-Maiouf from Golovin’s cross in the aftermath of a set-piece.

It should come as no surprised that Russia took the lead in the air against the shortest side at this summer’s World Cup.

That vulnerability furthers the appeal of Uruguay defender Diego Godin (£5.5m), a great threat from set-pieces, who scored four goals in World Cup qualifying.

Indeed, Oscar Tabarez’s side netted more goals from set-plays in qualifying than any other nation from South America or Europe.

The likes of Mohamed Salah (£8.5m), Luis Suarez (£10.5m) and Edinson Cavani (£9.5m) will all likely be looked at as options for later Group Stage rounds accordingly.

There was disappointment for Alan Dzagoev (£7.0m), selected by two percent of World Cup Fantasy managers, who was forced off with a hamstring injury in the 24th minute.

His replacement, Cheryshev, was the scorer of the second goal after Russia successfully mounted a breakaway attack in the 43rd minute.

Roman Zobnin (£5.5m) fed the substitute, whose excellent first-touch took him past two defenders allowing him to slam the ball high into the net unchallenged.

Alexandr Samedov (£7.5m), involved in 11 goals during Russia’s 20 matches in the build-up to the tournament, look bright but was substituted in the 64th minute with just playing and clean sheet points to his name.

Next to leave the field for Russia was Fedor Smolov (£8.0m) in the 71st minute. Artem Dzyuba (£8.0m) was the man who came on for him, scoring with his first touch of the match – a header from another Golovin cross.

Cheryshev scored his second late-on after a knock-down from Dyzuba was rifled into the net from outside the box.

After being fouled on the edge of the box in stoppage time, Golovin, who had been booked minutes before, took the free-kick placing it perfectly to Al-Maiouf’s left to cap off a memorable victory for the hosts.

With a fixture against Egypt up next, Golovin and Cheryshev may soak up some transfer activity in the coming days.

TEAMS

RUSSIA (4-2-3-1): Akinfeev; Fernandes, Kutepov, Ignashevich, Zhirkov; Gazinskiy, Zobnin, Golovin, Dzagoev (Cheryshev 28’), Samedov (Kuzyayev 64’); Smolov (Dzyuba 70’).

Samedov (C) got me 6 points today, and i will be changing captain to someone else, so most I will get from Samedov is 3 pts.
Surely its ok to sub in Belhanda for him tomorrow as good chance of more than 3pts right?

Im a bit confused by the subs.... i mean i have Belhanda on bench, but if i dont sub him in for someone tomorrow, wont he just stay on the bench anyway, even if he hauls?

What do you mean by 'sub someone yet to play'...?

        1. Epic Fail
          • 15 Years

I mean sub him in and take out someone who hasn't played yet.

        2. GreennRed
          • 14 Years

Play him anyway tomorrow. For someone with less points than Samedov or for Samedov. Belhanda is probably playing earlier than some of your 11? Your bench should be those 3 playing later than your outfield 10 and your keeper playing after your current keeper. Can still be rearranged as you can swap players on anf off the bench that haven't played yet.

Just sub out the lowest scorers who have played.

3 might be enough to make your XI

      1. Twisted Saltergater
        • 16 Years
        7 years, 6 months ago

No need to sub out a 3 pointer if he has other players yet to play. He should swap someone who hasn't played yet with Belhanda.

Surely the game will allow him to sub the other player back in as he hasn't played yet? I'm not sure.

Oh i see, so even if i havent activated my sub before tomorrows game, i could still sub in Belhanda for someone on the 19th before the last game if they had a better score than them?

Thanks all, i thought the subs could only go one way from sub bench onto playing XI, i didnt realise they could move to and fro within the week!

        2. CatMac
          • 16 Years
          7 years, 6 months ago

You can only sub someone from the bench who hasnt played. So if Belhanda plays tomorrow but is on your bench you can't sub him in on the 19th and conversely if he plays tomorrow and is in your 11 and you then sub him out, you can't sub him back in. You can only sub in players who havent played.

          Does this make sense?

Thats what I was thinking, I thought the sub process was from Subs bench to team XI, but not backwards the other way

            1. CatMac
              • 16 Years
              7 years, 6 months ago

You can do it back the other way but only if they havent played. For example, if you have James in your starting 11 and Belhanda on your bench, you can sub Belhanda in and James out now and if Belhanda doesnt do well you can sub James back in before he plays on the 19th.

Couple of months ago: FFS made a HT of a post that was predicated on the idea that I was 'delusional', and called and my ideas 'ridiculous'.

Today: FFS deletes my post that incinated Virg was delusional (and pushing back - as a community should - on members trying to write their own skewed myths about the heros and villains of our community).

My thoughts exactly. The Arab defence left way too much space for the Russians last night, and their passing was disgusting as well. Sevetal moments where even the simplest of passes was missed or played too casually to allow a Russian mid to intercept.
If Uruguay lose.... I'd be asking more questions.

so help me out here guys, hypothetical scenario

I have kaku on bench and lewa starting. Lewa blanks and gets 2 pts.

I sub him out for kaku who plays next day but unfortunately he gets a knock and doesn't feature at all. Am I getting back lewa's or any other player's pts from the bench in an auto sub kind of scenario.

No, In McD's, once you make a manual substitution, automatic substitions no longer apply. However, in the scenario above, Lewa plays after Kaku. So you couldn't do it anyway.

If you (c) Kaka and he blanks and you move the captaincy to Lewa then that's your final shot - if he also blanks, tough luck.

Yeah. So much better, more transfers and can actually celebrate good players scoring. Neymar, Messi etc.

I have a lot of experience with McDonald’s fantasy but this new bench booster is playing with my brain. Please help.

If I leave guys on my bench and don’t even put them on the field, do I get points for them? Or

Do I have to have them play their match on the field to get points (therefore subbing off a player who has already played to the bench, hence keeping the points but moving them to the bench).

I have golovin as captain, all set ;).

Just because I’m the worrying one, I will put my playing players on the field prior to their game and sub my already played players from the field to the bench just to be sure. Will probably finish with a stellar round.

        Bench booster

        Muslera, Uzoho

        Danilo, Varela, Dalsgaard, Mojica, Meunier

Your bench should contain the players who play last out of a gameweek and then you make subs at the back end of the week.

            • 16 Years

Exactly. That's why Al-Dawsari is still stinking up my team with his 2 points until I can replace him with Trippier, Sabaly or James. Even then I'm not sure on whether Sabaly will even make it past my bench 🙂

            7 years, 6 months ago

            ???

But you only get that 1 point if you sub him in and that one point sub on another day could be a 6 pointer over your 2 scorer.

You can't sub players in after they have already played, you have to roll the dice beforehand.

            1. Deulofail
              • 9 Years
              7 years, 6 months ago

The hypothetical 1-point player is already in the XI. In that case, you would keep Al_Dawsari in the XI and sub out the 1-pointer instead.

The players on your bench should be your end of week players. By the end of the week, you will know how many points all of your played players have had. You then sub accordingly.

If you sub a player out now then you don't know if you are subbing out your worst player.

Yeah I get it. The way I read it earlier it was as if you were saying you could sub players in after seeing there score.

You meant best to wait to sub players OUT last minute.

Reasonable Russian penalty shout in 1st half with score still close, why not give that if there's corruption? Saudi are just crap, and teams going to pieces in a tournament after looking OK in the build up shouldn't be a surprising thing to any England fan.
