Midfielder Aleksandr Golovin (£6.5m) was the Fantasy star of the show as Russia thrashed Saudi Arabia 5-0 in the opening World Cup fixture.

He scored the fifth and final goal for the hosts as they registered their first win in eight matches, assisting another two of his nation’s strikes for a 13 point haul.

Substitute Denis Cheryshev (£5.5m) was not far behind Golovin in the match, scoring twice and amassing 12 points.

Budget option Yuri Gazinskiy (£4.5m) opened the scoring in the 12th minute, heading past Al-Maiouf from Golovin’s cross in the aftermath of a set-piece.

It should come as no surprised that Russia took the lead in the air against the shortest side at this summer’s World Cup.

That vulnerability furthers the appeal of Uruguay defender Diego Godin (£5.5m), a great threat from set-pieces, who scored four goals in World Cup qualifying.

Indeed, Oscar Tabarez’s side netted more goals from set-plays in qualifying than any other nation from South America or Europe.

The likes of Mohamed Salah (£8.5m), Luis Suarez (£10.5m) and Edinson Cavani (£9.5m) will all likely be looked at as options for later Group Stage rounds accordingly.

There was disappointment for Alan Dzagoev (£7.0m), selected by two percent of World Cup Fantasy managers, who was forced off with a hamstring injury in the 24th minute.

His replacement, Cheryshev, was the scorer of the second goal after Russia successfully mounted a breakaway attack in the 43rd minute.

Roman Zobnin (£5.5m) fed the substitute, whose excellent first-touch took him past two defenders allowing him to slam the ball high into the net unchallenged.

Alexandr Samedov (£7.5m), involved in 11 goals during Russia’s 20 matches in the build-up to the tournament, look bright but was substituted in the 64th minute with just playing and clean sheet points to his name.

Next to leave the field for Russia was Fedor Smolov (£8.0m) in the 71st minute. Artem Dzyuba (£8.0m) was the man who came on for him, scoring with his first touch of the match – a header from another Golovin cross.

Cheryshev scored his second late-on after a knock-down from Dyzuba was rifled into the net from outside the box.

After being fouled on the edge of the box in stoppage time, Golovin, who had been booked minutes before, took the free-kick placing it perfectly to Al-Maiouf’s left to cap off a memorable victory for the hosts.

With a fixture against Egypt up next, Golovin and Cheryshev may soak up some transfer activity in the coming days.

TEAMS

RUSSIA (4-2-3-1): Akinfeev; Fernandes, Kutepov, Ignashevich, Zhirkov; Gazinskiy, Zobnin, Golovin, Dzagoev (Cheryshev 28’), Samedov (Kuzyayev 64’); Smolov (Dzyuba 70’).

SAUDI ARABA (4-5-1): Al-Maiouf; Alburayk, Os.Hawsawi, Om.Hawsawi, Al-Shahrani; Otayf (Al-Muwallad 63’), Al-Dawsari, Al-Faraj, Al-Jassam, Al-Shehri (Bahbir 74’), Al-Sahlawi

What score would you be happy with for your captain? in FPL I am always happy with a goal, and I will make do with an assist. 1 goal Doesn't feel as strong here, is it just me? what score would you stick or twist on?

First couple days 9-10, then less each day. If I had players over 9.0m, even Neyamar, still to play, then maybe I'd only be happy with 10-11 on the first day. (All points before doubling - and now I realsie that you've already read my opinion before! haha)

Yes - you should expect a goal or clean sheet bare minimum from your captain which would give you 12 points doubled up.

You have enough goes at the armband so rotate with confidence.

I have a goal and a clean sheet, Grazinsky is on 8 points, doubled to 16.... why would a goal get you 12 points doubled up?

            • 15 Years

If your doubled up score is over 12 points, you should consider banking.

Unless you feel there is a captain with the potentail to score big eg Lukaku v Panama.

Thanks dude. I couldn't figure out if people were talking about the numbers before or after doubling. and infact I think some are talking about one, and some about the other. because some have used odd numbers, clearly must be talking about pre-doubling.

I currently have Grazinsky, who scored 8, but doubled up to 16 for me. my other options include Cavani v EGY, Jesus v SUI, Lukaku v Panama and James v Japan. 8 points seems decent but Id be surprised if one of those options didnt to better than 8

Anyone playing FiT know if you can pick a new captain if you transfer out your captain?

I've tried to find it in the rules but can't. I have the armband on Messi but don't really think the rest of the group stage is as fertile for the Argies and if I could transfer in Lewandowski for another double haul, I would,

Jayus I am annoyed I had Golovin penciled in because of tifo football on you tube.
Then I listened to the scoutcast and I went for samedov instead, he sounded like a much surer bet.
In fairness to the scoutcast I did get a better bench because of thier talk.
Played bench boost went for Nigerian keeper and three Uruguay.
    Hopefully it will work out.

    What does be going on!?

    eBay Q here...

I'm following an auction of an item that starts the bidding at 22£. There is no bids yet but there is an option to make an offer. I made an offer or 26£ but no reply from the seller, my Q is, Can I bid on the item for 22£ for the reserve price and start the bidding from there, therefore getting the item for 22£ if no one else bids?

Never encountered an auction with a 'Make offer' option and google doesn't really answer the Q. If anyone has done it before please let me know

    k thx

Nope, the bid option is still there at the reserve of 22£

It's slightly confusing with no answers!

No doubt FPL has become less asymmetric from an information/planning perspective over the past few years. I scrolled through my twitter feed today and saw Ben Dinnery already commenting on BGWs and DGWs for the top 6 teams. How do you get an edge in this sort of environment? A good start to the season seems more critical than ever if you can’t bank on making it up later on.

    1. Ógie
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member
      • 12 Years
      7 years, 6 months ago

Making plans especially at this stage is folly.

These pipe dreams by the likes of Dinnery will be out the window by the time managers really have to deal with the BGWs and DGWs.

The game is dynamic and changes from game week to game week and if you want an edge you have to stay on top of it and watch out for trends and swings and react accordingly, this will give you an edge.

Although a good start would be nice it is not essential and plenty do quite well without doing so.

      1. Pinky Blinders
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 6 months ago

Unless the chips change or the time period you are required to use them in changes, I don’t see many serious managers electing to use the bulk of them until the DGWs. So if the gains you can make during that period are less than they used to be, I don’t see any other alternative to getting a good start. Maybe the edge shifts to minimized hits and postponing the first WC for as long as you can unless you need a squad overhaul completely? The season I finished 2k also coincided with a very late WC and a zero hit transfer policy. But maybe that was just symptomatic of a good start? I don’t know, just feels like doing well in the first half of the season to extend the window on your first WC is becoming more critical. Just wondering what other people think based on their experiences. Probably not right answer really...

You are right about bgws and dgws being less effective means of climbing up the OR. A lot of fpl'ers are using easily available info now as well. Any edge one had is gone now.

I'm just going to try to have a better start than last season as that is where I messed up my season.

My plan is to have no Kane/Spurs til their stadium move. No Arsenal til gw3, have 2 City assets (Sane Mendy). Salah in my team if he is 13.5 max and Egypt are out at group stage. DDG is going to be my way into Utd defence.

WC during 1st international break (did so in gw2 last season) and hold onto chips til the end gws. But I will try to be offensive with their use (ie use one gw38 for instance)

That moment when you don't have any players playing today, so you can just sit back and enjoy the football.

It was like an average 16yo team thrashed a more talented 12yo team

Wow poor Newcastle! Spurs, Chelsea, City & Arsenal in their first five fixtures!

Any thoughts on CHE this season? Not sure where they are headed. Seems like a team sliding towards a major overhaul job.

Fpl wise only Alonso or Azpi will be my targets.

Don't think its a overhaul job tbh. They need a CM partner for Kante, Morata to be healthy and maybe Conte to get his mojo back or leave

Change captain to Varela or El Kajoui or leave it on Ignashevich (6 points) ?

I'd change it (Varela), you have big hitters still to play anyway

When does the FPL site come back online to start picking team? Mid July?

Some major Cavani points would be nice tomorrow. Hopefully a either one goal or a bunch though, so I don’t have the dilemma of whether to swap captains

So what's all this talk that J. Rodriguez is in doubt. Is this true. Will he play or won't he. Thoughts & thanks in advance.

In other news looks like the yobs are at it again...

Even though a reformed yob offered safe passage...hmm...me thinks it's a trap...

Just out of curiosity, how many England fans decided to stay home?
