The two most popular players in the Gameround 2 transfer market both rewarded their new owners on World Cup day seven.

Despite a distinct lack of goals across the three matches there was still cause to celebrate for World Cup Fantasy managers invested in defensive assets.

We’ve got all the goals, assists and other talking points from the latest action in Russia.

PORTUGAL 1-0 MOROCCO

TOP SCORING PLAYERS:

  • Rui Patricio (£6.0m) – 7 points
  • Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.0m) – 6 points
  • Joao Moutinho (£7.5m) – 6 points
  • Pepe (£6.0m) – 6 points
  • Cedric (£5.5m) – 6 points
  • Jose Fonte (£5.5m) – 6 points
  • Raphael Guerreiro (£5.5m) – 6 points

Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.0m) continued his impressive start to the 2018 World Cup by scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win over Morocco.

The Real Madrid man got his fourth goal of the tournament in just the fifth minute when he connected a header with Joao Moutinho’s (£7.5m) cross. He is now the top-scoring World Cup Fantasy player again, with 22 points.

Ronaldo also had a chance to register an assist in the 39th minute after he sent strike partner Goncalo Guedes (£7.5m) through on goal. However, the PSG man’s shot was saved by Munir Mohamedi (£4.5m) when he really should have scored.

Surprisingly, Morocco were the more attacking side in the meeting as they needed to get a positive result to avoid elimination. They took the game to Portugal in the opening period although they lacked some conviction in the final third.

There were some promising signs as Nordin Amrabat (£6.0m) comfortably won the battle against Raphael Guerreiro (£5.5m) on Morocco’s right flank. Then on the brink of half-time, Younes Belhanda’s (£5.5m) flick-on from a corner was nearly met at the back-post by Medhi Benatia (£5.0m).

In the second-half Morocco pushed on and asked more questions of the Portuguese defence, forcing an incredible save from new Wolves sigining Rui Patricio (£6.0m).

However, Herve Renard’s men couldn’t find a breakthrough and were subsequently knocked out of the tournament.

Portugal XI: Patricio; Cedric, Pepe, Fonte, Guerreiro; William, Moutinho (A Silva 88’), Joao Mario (Bruno Fernandes 70’), B Silva (Martins 59’); Guedes, Ronaldo

Morocco XI: Mohamedi; Dirar, Da Costa, Benatia, Hakimi; El Ahmadi (Fajr 85’), Boussoufa, Belhanda, N. Amrabat, Ziyech; Boutaib (El Kaabi 69’)

URUGUAY 1-0 SAUDI ARABIA

TOP SCORING PLAYERS:

  • Fernando Muslera (£5.5m) – 7 points
  • Luis Suarez (£10.5m) – 6 points
  • Carlos Sanchez (£7.5m) – 6 points
  • Diego Godin (£5.5m) – 6 points
  • Jose Gimenez (£5.5m) – 6 points
  • Martin Caceres (£5.5m) – 6 points
  • Guillermo Varela (£4.5m) – 6 points

Only Fantasy managers invested in Uruguay’s defence and Luis Suarez (£10.5m) were left happy after a match that failed to live up to its billing.

After Saudi Arabia were trounced 5-0 by Russia in their opening match there were high hopes for the attacking players available in Oscar Tabarez’s squad.

However, they scored just the one goal in the end as Uruguay continued to get results without the sparkle many expected pre-tournament.

Suarez put Uruguay in front from their first corner of the match, as La Celeste added yet another set-piece goal to their records. This was their second in two matches at the tournament, after netting 11 from 18 in qualifying. Carlos Sanchez’s (£7.5m) cross went past the advancing Diego Godin (£5.5m) and the out-stretched arms of goalkeeper Mohammed Owais (£4.0m), falling to the Barcelona man on the back post.

Edinson Cavani (£9.5m) was particularly disappointing, missing out several chances to score. Despite having nine attempts on goal at this tournament, he is yet to find the net.

Taissir Al-Jassam (£5.5m) had to come out of the game with a hamstring injury in the 41st minute after he shaped to shoot.

URUGUAY XI (4-4-2): Muslera; Caceres, Godin, Gimenez, Varela; Rodriguez (Laxalt 59’), Betancur, Vecino (Torreira 59’), Sanchez (Nandez 82’); Suarez, Cavani.

SAUDI ARABIA XI (4-1-4-1): Owais; Shahrani, Albulayhi, Osama Hawsawi, Burayk; Otayf; Al-Dawsari, Al-Jassam (Al-Moqahwi 44’), Al-Faraj, Bahbir (Kanno 76’); Al-Muwallad (Al-Sahlawi 78’).

IRAN 0-1 SPAIN

TOP SCORING PLAYERS:

  • Deigo Costa (£9.0m) – 6 points
  • David De Gea (£6.0m) – 6 points
  • Sergio Ramos (£6.5m) – 6 points
  • Jordi Alba (£6.5m) – 6 points
  • Gerard Pique (£6.0m) – 6 points
  • Dani Carvajal (£5.5m) – 6 points

Diego Costa (£9.0m) rewarded the 94,000+ World Cup Fantasy managers who signed him for Gameround 2 by scoring his third goal of the tournament.

The former Chelsea man netted a brace against Portugal in Spain’s opening match causing him to be the second-most signed player for the second round of matches, behind only Ronaldo (132,000+ new owners).

It was a tough encounter for Spain, though, as Iran spent most of the meeting sat deep inside their own penalty box.

Mananger Fernando Hierro made two changes from the side that drew 3-3 with Portugal. Dani Carvajal (£5.5m) recovered from the injury picked up in the Champions League final to replace Nacho (£5.5m). A more attacking switch was made in midfield as Lucas Vazquez (£6.0m) came in for Koke (£6.0m).

Wave after wave of Spanish possession and attack was battled away by Carlos Queiroz’s side, who had the former World champions a little nervy whenever they broke.

In the second-half Iran survived a goalmouth scramble but were desperately unlucky in the 54th minute when Costa got his goal.

Andres Iniesta (£8.0m) played a through-ball into the Atletico Madrid striker before a tackle saw it bounce off Costa and go into Ali Beiranvand (£4.5m)’s goal.

Iran gallantly persevered and found the back of the net themselves in the 62nd minute when Saeid Ezatolahi (£5.0m) stabbed home from a free-kick. However, both the lines-man and the VAR officials confirmed that he had strayed offside.

Iran continued to throw bodies forward but could not find the breakthrough. In the end it was joy for those invested in the Spanish defence with Sergio Ramos (£6.5m) and David De Gea (£6.0m) on 20.8% and 15.5% ownership respectively.

On the injury front, Iran captain Hajsafi sustained a knock in the first-half but managed to solider on before being replaced by Milad Mohammadi in the 69th minute.

IRAN XI (4-2-3-1): Beiranvand; Hajsafi (Mohammadi 69’), Pouraliganji, Hosseini, Ramin; Ezatolahi, Omid; Amiri (Ghoddos 86’), Mehdi, Ansarifard (Jahanbakhsh 74’); Sardar.

SPAIN XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Alba, Ramos, Pique, Carvajal; Iniesta (Koke 71’), Busquets; Vazquez (Asensio 80’), Isco, D Silva; Costa (Rodrigo 89’).

RP. If you have a captain who has scored 6 points (Suarez, Ronaldo, Costa etc) you are only really risking 4 points by changing and chasing a higher score!

Every one of you should change, especially if you have two or more of Lukaku/Kane/Coutinho/Eriksen/James/Griezmann

I'd twist the 7 only if it's an early one and you still have at least 3 good options to top it.

after yesterday I have Coutinho with 7 and I think it's too late to twist it to Lukaku as I have no other option after that.

for me 7 is the mark to stick with. problem is that a striker needs to score 2 goals to make it 10, which is only 3 points more. a second brace from Lukaku is as unlikely as it is expected.

        It’s 6 not 3. You’re comparing (C). It’s 14 vs 20. Risking 5 to gain 6. Seems worth it to me

        1. Biancazzurri
          • 13 Years
          8 years, 23 days ago

ok. perhaps it is worth it, but it depends how late into the round you gain the 7. realistically I only have Lukaku to better it, too risky for me at this point.

          7x2 + 10 = 24

          7x1 + 10x2 = 27

If you were outright replacing the players, you are correct. But you are not, so you are wrong. It’s a gain of 3.

          1. ducksfly2gether
            • 10 Years
            8 years, 23 days ago

            Look at it this way...

It’s your (C) 10x2=20 VS everyone who sticks on 7. That’s a 6 point (C) gain over (I would assume) the majority of players in this game. Every point you can gain on players is crucial. Win the (C) and you win the game.

You: 100 points. You twist Cout to Lukaku.

Me: 100 points. I stick Cout, but own Lukaku.

Lukaku 10 pointer (and assuming we are on 100 with Lukaku to come)

              You: 100 - 7 + 20 = 113
              Me: 100 + 10 = 110

                • 12 Years
                8 years, 23 days ago

And if Lukaku gets one goal:

                You: 100 -7 +12 = 105
                Me: 100 + 6 = 106

                8 years, 23 days ago

Yes but not everyone owns Lukaku. Forget the rest of your players and who other people have. We’re solely looking at the potential (C) gain vs people who stick on 7. 20 is better than 14.

Waste of a WC to catch rises? [No transfers next GW until price rises have occurred so, last chance to catch them is now]

    1. _Make
      • 9 Years
      8 years, 25 days ago

Yeah I was wondering how they might work. It certainly plays into the hands of GW3 WCers except for the fact that the players who have played well in GWs 1 and 2 might well end up being rotated in 3, because their good performance in many cases will mean that they have helped their teams qualify.

I will certainly be looking to load up with good players who still have something to play for - there won't be that many though.

Will there be drops too? I can see players like Isco and Samedov dropping despite playing well. If so I'd be likely to get them in for the round of 16.

    2. Mo Mané Mo Problems
      • 12 Years
      8 years, 25 days ago

If I remember correctly, I think price rises were largely irrelevant last time. like 0.1 here, 0.1 there.

Obviously you can’t use the past to predict the future, but I wouldn’t get hung up on it.

The hardest part of this game is the budget if only big teams make it through, and they remove eliminated players. So then you have to pick players that won’t play but cost 0.5/1.0 more than the cheapest available now.

Would Moreno Problems work in your name? 😆

Interesting that they might have been negligible. I was expecting a 1.0 Ronaldo rise! Still might make sense to get him in under a WC?

Are we overlooking with chips that future games may last 120mn? Surely a striker can score more in 90 than 120mn. A defender is less likely to keep clean sheet. And what about penalty shootouts?

        I posted this earlier:

Cueva starts tonight, Farfan or Carillo is likely to miss out.

Matuidi and Giroud are expected to start for France in an otherwise unchanged line-up. 4-4-2. Matuidi predominantly to deal with Advincula's pace.

The source is a strong one, straight from the eleven used in the last few training sessions. futbolfantasy.com

He did look shot after the penalty miss, but I'd be surprised if he didn't start.
Might not be on penalties anymore though.

can anyone confirm how price rises really work? don't really remember how it was at the euros 2016 and not really explained in the rules. if you have a player in your team who rises in price do you get the rise and could have a team value above 105mil when selecting your team for Ro16? or does everything get reset, prices rise and everyone in the game gets to select a team for only 105mil for Ro16 no matter what team they had before?

I want to know this also.
I was talking to someone yesterday who seems to think that you can make unlimited transfers as soon as the deadline for round 3 has passed (June 25th at 4pm UK) and you would also have the increased budget of 105m, which I didn't think seemed right as player prices aren't supposed to change until after round 3 has completed.
So we get the extra budget, but original prices, which doesn't make sense.
Anyway, he was sure that's how it worked.

i am just guessing would they not adjust you cash to include players that have risen or fallen that you already have in your team so the total would still be 105 mill if you took all your players out

      1. HamezMace
        • 11 Years
        8 years, 25 days ago

I assumed they would just add 5m to your bank, so if your current team value was 100m then your bank just shows the extra 5m.

I wouldn't think if you already have a player then his increased value would then be taken away from that amount.
i.e if Ronaldo becomes 14m then you only have 4m in the bank.

...but this is all just me guessing, I honestly don't know, I can't find it in the rules, and the idea of unlimited transfers with an increased budget but no player changes seems strange to me. I suppose it's because the only alternative would mean we'd only have one day before the group stage ends, and the last 16 starts to make all our changes, and that probably doesn't suit 90% of people playing the game.

        1. Norman Conquest
          • 12 Years

i don't know either but they are not just giving an extra 5 mill they are giving a budget of 105 mill so it doesn't really matter what your bank balance says just what your team value would be if removing all players only time will tell it would be nice to catch the extra increase plus 5 mill though

          1. Norman Conquest
            • 12 Years

also i don't think the amount would be that different i should imagine everyone has players in their team that will increase and decrease

Yeah I have no idea how much prices will change, 1m, or 0.1m?!

I don't think that's right, why would you be removing all your players?
I thought the idea of the extra budget was so that we can take out our 4.5m fodder players, who have likely been knocked out, and replace them with players still in the competition, but are probably 5-5.5m

Need to punt Cavani for Rd 3.
I can't juggle it to get Ronaldo in but do you reckon Costa is a good shout?
With both Portugal and Spain on 4 points and Iran on 3, they'll both still want a win on GW3 just incase.
So I expect Costa will play and seems to be in form...??

Any alternatives? I already have Griezmann and a bench warmer.

I think Costa's a great shout. As you said he'll play round 3 because they still have to win to top the group & Costa is the focal point of their attack. I have Ronaldo, Costa & Lukaku because all 3 are the attacking outlets for their teams.

Messi. Croatia are a bit overrated. They have some big-name players but their defense is really not great. Messi is too good to blank twice imo. Fancy him to bag a few or at least assist.

Peru are a really strong defensive side and France were quite unconvincing against Australia.

you likely cant if you dont have a score history from last season.
once the new season starts you will have a valid gameweek history screen to check and be able to see your previous season scores.
      I wouldnt worry.
