World Cup Fantasy managers have kept faith in reigning champions Germany, their defence especially, despite their shock defeat to Mexico.

Just under a quarter will be looking for Joshua Kimmich (£6.5m) to add to his tally of two goals and nine assists during qualifying.

His last outing was a match that showcased the best and worst of the Bayern Munich man, considered the long-term replacement for Phillip Lahm. While he had 50 touches in the final third (more than any defender at that point in the tournament), he left his team’s defence very exposed to the counter-attack.

Manuel Neuer (£6.0m) also comes into this game with heavy backing sat in 21.5 percent of squads, while 13.2 percent went for Mats Hummels (£6.0m) and 8.6 percent own Jerome Boating (£6.0m).

Further up the field is more complicated for Germany as rotation can often limit the game-time of the midfield and forwards.

However, Thomas Mueller (£9.5m), classified as.a midfielder still has 13.5 percent of World Cup Fantasy managers invested in him. Up front Timo Werner (£9.5m) has just 4.5 percent.

Sweden’s 1-0 win over a poor South Korea side has not forced any great transfer market shift. They come into tonight’s match with no player owned by more than 2.4 percent – the ownership levels of budget midfielder Gustav Svensson (£4.5m), who played just nine minutes in Gameround 1.

There has been an increase from 0.9 to 1.9 percent ownership for defender Andreas Granqvist (£5.0m), who takes Sweden’s penalties. The most fashionable stopper for the Swedes is Manchester United man Victor Lindelof (£5.0m), yet to play any part in Russia after an illness ruled him out of the win over South Korea.

So my World Cup is over.

I was all set to completely ignore the Mexico vs South Korea game, when I read this from David I-Don't-Like-Mundays in the dugout discussion:

"South Korea had zero shots on target in their Gameround 1 meeting with Sweden and just five efforts on goal in total. Despite that, no defender in Mexico’s squad has more than the 1.6 percent ownership of Hector Ayala (£5.0m)."

So what did I go and do? Waste 4 transfers block defending Mexican defenders only for flippin' Son (who has taunted me in FPL during the last 2 seasons) to score in the flippin' NINETY-THIRD minute. 😡

I'm absolutely furious .... with myself and my decision making.

Wake me up when the FPL game is launched.

Just for the record ... David's articles are excellent. My anger is directed at a certain South Korean chap.

4 precious transfers out of 26 in Telegraph. I only have 7 left now for the group stages.

Ah I see, was confused as I've never played a FF game outside of the official ones. Transfers are so valuable, why use four like that for such a small upside? Get the mistakes out of your system before FPL comes out.

Ha, that's a good way of looking at it! 😀

I thought it was a nailed on cleanie. Korea's attack was so anemic.

I went triple Uruguay for the first 2 games!!!

Then I switched all my Uruguay defenders out for Mexican ones 2 hours ago 😥

Regardless of this. You used 4 transfers to bring in players for a single game. That is absolutely rookie, especially given you have previously declared that telegraph fantasy football is for the elite managers only. You are clearly not one.

I look forward to the peace till FPL starts.

    Messi or Neymar?

Messi has a better fixture, Neymar better form. Both need a win. Neymar's team is undoubtedly better but Messi is Messi. Who to pick?

Gary Neville back in the studio and talking sense...yes Germany were better than they've been given credit for against Mexico.

Any ideas for how to use my FT for Round 3? Thanks

    Ochoa - Uzoho
    Varela - Meunier - Akanji - Trippier - Sabaly
    Isco - Coutinho - Muller - Gazinsky - Inui
    Cavani - Kane - Kaku

    0 ITB

Cavani -> Costa looks appealing. Not sure how Muller will fare today, defense looks alright, I guess.

How come they only gave visas to good looking women for the World Cup? Seems unfair...

Pity Ukraine didn’t qualify. Enjoying the Mexicans though. The ugly ones got visas, they just get ignored by the cameramen
