Set-pieces are still proving important for World Cup Fantasy managers as we head into the quarter-finals.

Once again, we’ve pulled together all the relevant data so Fantasy Football Scout members can work out which nations are the best to invest in for the next round.

At this stage, it looks like England and Brazil are the most likely to score from set-piece situations in the quarter-finals, based on their respective match-ups while Croatia and Russia both look susceptible to balls into the box.

READ NEXT: Our transfer tips and stats for the World Cup Fantasy quarter-finals

Our research includes the penalty and corner-takers for each country, based on who has taken them either in Russia or, in some cases, in qualification. If there is no number next to a player’s name it’s because they took at least one in qualifying and/or warm-up games but are yet to take one at the World Cup itself.

We’ve also calculated which teams concede the most fouls and attempts from set-plays too to help you work out which nations are the most likely to get set-pieces in the first place.

To clarify, the ‘Attempts from set plays’ section combines those who have shot from direct free-kicks or those who have latched onto the end of a corner.

The deadline for Gameround 5 is at 15:00 BST on Friday July 6, so make sure you sort your team in time.

    Hit rock bottom 🙁

Ok, plan is to take a -4 to remove my non-players.

    Current team:

    Muslera, Subasic
    Pavard, Granqvist, Maguire, CARVAJAL, RROD
    Modric, Coutinho, Claesson, PAVON, ISCO
    Kane, Lukaku, Mertens

Can just afford: WILLIAN + GOLOVIN + TRIPPIER + FAGNER.

Any complaints there? Any obvious mistakes?

I'm not sure - even if he hasn't, Fagner looks safe.

If I want to be safe, I can get Lovren/Strinic and Miranda/Trippier, if it looks like Fagner is at risk

I know most people are expecting a close, exciting game for Brazil vs Belgium but I can see Brazil swatting them aside.

Paddy Power offering 18/1 on Brazil winning 3-0 with money back as a free bet (max tenner) if Neymar or Lukaku score in 90 minutes.

I don't gamble but I agree - especially the way Brazil are defending and Belgium looked clueless for a lot of the match vs. Japan.

I think Brazil will win too but not high scoring. Something like 2-0. Brazil's defense is the real gem of this tournament. They haven't looked like conceding in any of the last 3 games.

Silva and Miranda look solid and Fagner has done ok but Felipe Luis doesn't quite fill Marcelo's boots. Hopefully he is back for the coming games.

Marcelo is obviously a far superior player and a million times better going forward but Filipe Luis is actually better defensively.

For me, now is the time to make sure you spread your players, so no matter if there are any shocks, you still have the available transfers to get a full squad of 15 for the semis.

Impossible to get 15 for the semis I think with just 5 transfers. 12 maybe.

I will have 15 for the quarters - if Sweden, Belgium, Uruguay/France and Russia go out, which is fairly likely, then I will lose 6 players, so you're right, I won't quite reach 15 without a hit (but I will probably take the hit) - if any of Brazil, England, Croatia get knocked out instead, I would lose an extra 1 player per team.

That means even in the most unlikely circumstance (Sweden, Belgium, Russia progressing) I can still get 12 with a hit.

I just don't see the point in getting 15 mediocre players vs getting 12 really solid ones. Hedging is great in FPL because it's a long-term game. I feel like you get better success here with a different more aggressive strategy.

I'm thinking of picking up a 3rd Brazilian defender for instance and banking on them doing a Spain to victory.

This game is massively more focussed on spreading your bets with the substitutions - I don't have 15 mediocre players - I have 15 really solid ones, though I lack Neymar for example - it has been the way all tournament so far that giving yourself 15 shots at getting decent points is better than having fewer.

I guess we can agree to disagree on this point - it just seems way too sensible and obvious to me to get as many chances as possible to get points.

It depends if you wanna go for upside.

I had 4 England increasing to 5 this week. It’s a big gamble but imo worth it.

Brazil more risky. Yes a superior team but a much harder game.

Really tempted to play Max Cap next round with so many scoring options playing on the same day and not much room for Cap rotation plus big returns are still possible especially in match like Brazil Belgium...hmmmm...

Wouldn't argue if it suits your team. With Lukaku + Kane and no Neymar in my team, it makes much more sense for me personally to captain the golden boot contenders on consecutive days

That was my logic when I used the MC chip in Round 2; Ronaldo vs Morocco, Costa vs Iran & Cavani vs KSA.

          Armband ended up on Lingard...

No idea. My guess is that it will just land on whoever played first/last depending on how it's coded.

Yeah vs Panama.. and no not really. I was moving the armband around anyway for the hell of it, obviously would have twisted from the aforementioned strikers to Coutinho and who got 7(x2) points.

Would have twisted to Lingard anyway after seeing the amount of chances he got against Tunisia so chip wasted really.

                • 8 Years
                8 years, 1 month ago

yeah but in that case you still had the option to rotate, what if they had all played on the same day?
Then you would have missed out on a big return, no?

If Cavani, Costa, Ronaldo, Coutinho and Lingard all played on the same day? Maybe. Lingard got 10 while Cavani got 2. The rest got 6 or 7.

    2. MDK
      • 16 Years

Two trains of thought on when to play your MC:

      1. The QF's are the last round with multiple games on the same day, so less chance to move the armband around especially if you have multiple options playing on the same day i.e. Lukaku, Neymar, Mbappe etc

      2. As the tournament progresses differentials become fewer so being able to maximise captaincy will set you apart i.e. Everyone captains Neymar in the final only for Willian to score a hat-trick

I can't make my mind up when to play it.

      1. Louis_Sans_Balls
        • 8 Years
        8 years, 1 month ago

yeah it's a tough one, I believe the MC chip is intended to be best played when their's the most uncertainty on whom to Cap. Right now the way I picked my team for the QFs I have very limited rotation, I'm thinking in the Semi's and Final the choice might be a bit more obvious. That said, you make a good point that it really is your last wildcard chip to be played and could really make a difference in that final round.

Another thing to consider is if you think the last round will be high scoring due to that 3rd place game. I see Sweden possibly sneaking in there and if they do I just don't see high returns possible. So I'm really being swayed to playing it now vs later but still not sure.

While I'm on the subject of gambling, I usually do well on the football, much better than the horseracing at least.. but this World Cup has been kind to the bookies. So many shocks and so many unpredictable games, I bet Germany ruined thousands upon thousands of accas. The only pre-tournament bet I still have going is Kane for Golden Boot at 16/1.

    Alisson, 3.9
    Meunier, Trippier, Carvajal*, Granqvist, Lovren

    Kane, Hazard, Lukaku

Gonna do Carvajal to Maguire. Need two mids to replace Isco and Quintero for 15m.

First draft of Wildcard for the quarters - Any suggestions more than welcome. Struggling here!

    Muslera, Pickford.
    Miranda, Maguire, Pavard, Strinic, Granq.
    Coutinho, Modric, Carrasco, Bentancur, Cheryshev.
    Neymar, Kane, Mbappe.

    France (2) v (2) Uruguay
    Brazil (3) v (1) Belgium
    England (3) v (1) Sweden
    Croatia (2) v (1) Russia

Best case scenario: 10 players left with 5 free transfers

Really like the points for penalty won. FPL should implement this aswell.

      8 years, 1 month ago

Which means that if a player wins a penalty and the penalty is scored, he gets 5 points (2 for winning it + 3 for the assist).
That's more points than a striker would get for scoring the penalty.

Alright, but then how would that fit in with winning a free kick that is scored?

No, they would remove assists for winning pens just like in the WC game.

The problem then would be giving assists for winning free kicks because surely that shouldn't be worth more than winning a penalty. Maybe change that to 2 points?

          1. stat
            8 years, 1 month ago

Exactly, but I don't see how winning a free kick should get a player less points than a regular assist

Why not? I've always thought it was strange that winning a free kick was worth the same as a regular assist. It's not like if a direct free kick is a clear cut chance.

              1. stat
                8 years, 1 month ago

Not all assists from open play are clear cut chances either.

I think they should give assists like FWC do - no assists for winning free kicks, no assist if the ball lightly grazes your hair on the way to someone else, no assist for a sideways pass in the centre of the pitch and your team-mate going on a wonder run and thumps and unstoppable shot.

            1. stat
              8 years, 1 month ago

I don't like the "no assists for winning free kicks" because often creative players get fouled a lot in dangerous areas so I think they should be rewarded if they get fouled and the resulting free kick is scored. By the same logic I don't see why winning a penalty should warrant points if it's not scored; the idea is that by winning a penalty, you create a very good chance for somebody to score, but how is that any different to passing to someone who misses an easy tap in? Why should you be rewarded for creating good chances when they don't result in goals?

On a different topic, does winning a penalty count as a big chance created in the BPS stats? It really should.

Because a penalty is a clear-cut chance for scoring. Most penalties are scored, but most free kicks are not. Hence why points for penalty won, but not for free kick won.

But then why don't we count passes to players who miss open goals as being assists?
In most cases if you pass to a player and there is an open goal he is going to score it.

Because assists and penalties won should be different things in my opinion, you're still thinking of them as identical. I think FWC have the assists much, much better than the free-for-all that is FPL.

Yeah fair enough, I am putting everything into the same basket. I doubt that FPL will change their rules but it would be interesting as it would make players who win a lot of penalties like Zaha even more lucrative.

How would you judge the last one? It needs to be clear what is and isn't an assist

Exactly. The more subjective it is the worse it is for the game.

The points for winning is instead of the assist points but yeah, if the player who wins the penalty also scores the penalty he would get more points than a goal from open play. Still think it is better than assist points given for winning a penalty only if the penalty results in a goal.

So frustrating when a player you own wins a penalty and someone else misses it.

Not as frustrating as a player you own winning a penalty and then missing it

In this case at least you'd get the 2 points for winning the penalty to cancel out the -2 for missing it.

      2points for winning penalty
(no points if penalty is awarded after handball)
      +1point if penalty is scored
1point for winning FK from which is scored

3 points for real assist (like in WC fantasy)
      2 points for fantasy assist

Plenty of options in attack and defence, but midfield is really tough due to the lack of cheap options.
I'm on Modric - Coutinho - Lingard - Cheryshev - Bentancur at the moment, anybody better value than Cheryshev / Bentancur?

Is it worth-4 to get Neymar for Lukaku or go with existing front line of Lukaku Kane Mbappe with Coutinho and Willian or Paulinho in mid field?

Great fixtures and a longer break than Jesus. Expect to see him in a lot of GW1 teams especially with the signing of Mahrez making City's midfield more of a headache.

i only have 3 players out, so using that 3 FTs. Saving WC for the semis should do fine.

    Mbappe* / Hazard / Kane

    Modric / Coutinho / Lingard* / Cheryshev*/ Bentancur

    Granq / Tripp / Miranda / Meunier / Lovren

    Subasic / Olsen

I got 1.1m ITB, should I upgrade Mbappe to Grizzman? *** are new additions

First draft of WC team, thoughts?

    Muslera / Pickford
    Miranda / Maguire / Lovren / Pavard / Granqvist
    Coutinho / Rakitic / Pogba / Carrasco / Bentacur
    Suarez / Mbappe / Kane

Looks OK but midfield maybe a little expensive for what they've shown so far?

Would still go Modric over either of Rakitic/Pog + maybe downgrade the other to afford it (Forsberg/Golovin/Lingard).

I've just changed it up actually. Got rid of Pogba and going to double up on Modric + Rakitic! Also prob gonna gamble on Chadli over Carrasco as he might get the nod in that game. Cheers.

Attacking returns, Stones has scored twice, Tripper and Young taking free kicks

        stones okay... got lucky...

trippier has he even had an assists yet or young?

        meuneir has 2 assists.

        1. stat
          8 years, 1 month ago

I wouldn't say that Stones got lucky. He was in the right place at the right time.

Trippier has 1 assist while Young has none, but don't forget both players only started 3 games.

Meunier does have 2 assists but he's much less likely to keep a clean sheet against Brazil than England are against Sweden. Plus Brazil are better defensively.

    2. stat
      8 years, 1 month ago

Trippier creates a lot of chances, Maguire + Stones are goal threats

Might not be too many clean sheets from here on anyway - would argue Sweden one of the poorest attacking teams along with Russia so still potential for CS, plus goal threat from Mag / Stones + assists from Trippier/Young seems like a good combo.
      Also decently priced.

What's the worst case scenario for your team in terms of the number of transfers you will have to make to have 15 starters in the next round? (Barring injuries and suspensions, just based on teams going out)

For me it would be Brazil (2), Croatia (2) and England (5) going out. Since I'll surely have to spend 2 transfers whether France or Uruguay go out, I'd have to make 11 transfers in that scenario.

Best case scenario: 5 transfers made if Belgium, Russia, Sweden go out regardless of what happens in France vs Uruguay.

    Hi guys, thoughts on this:

    Isco-> Lingard
    Costa -> Mbappe
    Carvajal-> Maggie’s
    Lukaku -> Neymar (-4)

Not sure about Kaku -> Neymar, do you think it’s worth it?
    Thanks!

Personally wouldn't do it for a hit, no. I don't think ceilings are very high in this fixture so could see them both scoring v similarly.
