And then there were six. A European nation is guaranteed to win the World Cup this summer after South America’s final two challengers, Uruguay and Brazil, were despatched by France and Belgium in Friday’s quarter-final ties.

The bad news for Fantasy managers who own one or several of Philippe Coutinho, Neymar, Marcelo, Thiago Silva, Diego Godin, Fernando Muslera and Jose Gimenez – and there are many who do – is that their assets’ races are now run.

Coutinho was the most-owned player in the game ahead of Friday’s fixtures, while Godin and Marcelo both had ownerships of over 30%.

There is, at least, the consolation for those playing McDonald’s FIFA of being allotted five free transfers before the semi-final deadline next Tuesday evening. That is an increase of two transactions from the quarter-final limit and will in many cases be much needed to overhaul Fantasy squads that contain an abundance of players from eliminated sides.

We’ve got all the goals, assists, clean sheets and Fantasy talking points from Friday’s two quarter-final matches.

Uruguay 0-2 France

TOP-SCORING PLAYERS

  • Raphael Varane (£6.0m) – 12 points
  • Antoine Griezmann (£10m) – 9 points
  • Hugo Lloris (£5.9m) – 7 points
  • Corentin Tolisso (£7.3m) – 6 points
  • Samuel Umtiti (£5.9m) – 6 points
  • Benjamin Pavard (£4.5m) – 6 points
  • Lucas Hernandez (£5.0m) – 5 points

After Kylian Mbappe (£9.1m) hogged the limelight in the 4-3 win over Argentina, it was Antoine Griezmann‘s (£10m) turn to demonstrate his worth to the French national side – and Fantasy managers – with a starring role in the quarter-final win over Uruguay.

The Atletico Madrid forward’s teasing free-kick delivery was flicked in by centre-back Raphael Varane (£6.0m) for France’s opening goal and, while Fernando Muslera (£5.8m) could do little about that header, the Uruguayan goalkeeper was culpable for Les Bleus’ second.

Receiving the ball from Corentin Tolisso (£7.3m) around 25 yards from goal, Griezmann struck a speculative shot that Muslera could only palm up and into his own goal, Packie Bonner-style.

Mbappe, the most-bought Fantasy player ahead of the quarter-final deadline, ended the match with one point after picking up a yellow card.

Hugo Lloris‘ (£5.9m) superb save from a Martin Caceres (£5.8m) header was the closest that Uruguay came to a goal, as the 2010 semi-finalists struggled without injured striker Edinson Cavani (£9.6m).

Uruguay XI (4-4-2): Muslera; Caceres, Gimenez, Godin, Laxalt; Nandez, (Urretaviscaya 73′) Torreira, Vecino, Bentancur (Rodriguez 59′); Suarez, Stuani (Gomez 59′)

France XI (4-2-3-1): Lloris; Pavard, Varane, Umtiti, Hernandez; Pogba, Kante, Tolisso (N’Zonzi 80′); Mbappe (Dembele 88′), Griezmann (Fekir 93′), Giroud

Brazil 1-2 Belgium

TOP-SCORING PLAYERS

  • Kevin De Bruyne (£9.8m) – 7 points
  • Renato Augusto (£7.2m) – 6 points
  • Romelu Lukaku (£10.0m) – 5 points
  • Thibaut Courtois (£6.0m) – 5 points
  • Philippe Coutinho (£9.2m) – 5 points

Having almost failed to get past Japan in the last 16, Belgium produced a fine counter-attacking performance to eliminate Brazil and reach the World Cup semi-finals for the first time in 32 years.

Two first-half goals did for the Selecao. Nacer Chadli‘s (£6.9m) inswinging corner was flicked past his own goalkeeper by Fernandinho (£6.2m) for Belgium’s opener before Kevin De Bruyne (£9.8m) finished off a swift breakaway to double his country’s lead. The excellent Romelu Lukaku (£10.0m) picked up a deserved assist for De Bruyne’s strike, which was reminiscent of the Manchester City midfielder’s arrowed effort in the 5-0 win over Swansea City in April.

Substitute Renato Augusto (£7.2m) nodded home a chipped cross from Philippe Coutinho (£9.2m) to halve the deficit, but a sustained period of late Brazilian pressure came to no avail.

Thibaut Courtois (£6.0m) collected three extra points for his nine saves made, one of which was a fine injury-time stop from Neymar (£12.1m). The Brazil forward cut a frustrated figure all evening as he was thwarted by Courtois and denied a penalty claim by referee Milorad Mazic.

Thiago Silva (£6.2m) should have scored from a Neymar corner when the match was still goalless, but could only turn the ball onto Courtois’ post from point-blank range.

Brazil XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Fagner, Silva, Miranda, Marcelo; Paulinho (Augusto 73′), Fernandinho, Coutinho; Willian (Firmino 45′), Jesus (Costa 58′), Neymar

Belgium XI (3-4-3): Courtois; Alderweireld, Kompany, Vertonghen; Meunier, Fellaini, Witsel, Chadli (Vermaelen 83′); De Bruyne, Hazard, Lukaku (Tielemans 87′)

If Chelsea don't sign another striker, is Morata at 9m a decent option?

Has had plenty of time to reach full fitness now, 9m seems very cheap.

And Giroud probably won't be around at the start of the season, nor will Batshuayi.

Yeah. I think Silva and TAA (maybe Lingard and Mkhi) could be worth it even if they're not nailed due to their favourable prices, the positions they play (If GKs, CBs, DMs or CFs aren't nailed, they tend to be frozen out of the team), at the hope that they would play between 50-100% of their games as opposed to 0-50%.

Not sure about Giroud's and Stones' nailedness, as well as Lingard who you've mentioned. Note that all three of them are still at the world cup - I'm trying to avoid anyone still there at the moment. Looks fine other than that

I'm struggling in defence. Anyone got any tips?
I want to put a lot of money there - I feel it's a mistake I often make going very cheap at the back, so I want to spread the cash a bit better.

    Man City:
FBs still at the world cup, CBs a minefield - that leaves Ederson, so I'll take him.

    Man Utd:
Valencia overpriced, Young still at world cup, Jones still at world cup, competing with Bailly and Smalling (and maybe Lindelof). Oh dear, again the goalkeeper is the only stand-out option. That said, I expect at least one of Bailly/Smalling will be nailed come the start of the season, so for now I'll fit Bailly in and see what happens.

    Liverpool:
Alexander-Arnold looks incredible value, but less nailed. Other potential genuine options are Van Dijk and Robertson - both have attacking threat but Robertson slightly edges that. However, Van Dijk a lot less prone to the odd rotation, so I'll put him in.

    Spurs:
Lots of players late back from world cup, rotating full backs and poor fixtures. Avoid.

    Arsenal:
Leno incredible value, but already have Ederson. Emery's back line not yet known but likely to be Bellerin-Mustafi-Sokratis-Monreal, but Chambers, Kolasinac can't be ruled out. Wait and see.

    Chelsea:
Best options (Alonso and Azpi) more expensive. Uncertainty at the moment over manager. Decent fixtures. Hmmm, lets stick Alonso in.

Looks like we might get two playing 4.0s (Bednarek, Wan-Bissaka, Schelotto), so that leaves me with:

    Ederson, 4.0
Alonso, Bailly, Van Dijk, 4.0, 4.0

    Thoughts?

For United, it's gotta be DDG or bust.

Although Mendy is at the world cup, I don't think he's featured. Laporte has had the whole summer off.

Liverpool's right back will be of great value. I think at the moment Clyne probably starts the season.

Alonso/Azpi are the go to for Chelsea, but that could change if the switch managers.

I think Spurs defenders are awkwardly priced. You don't want to be paying 6m for a CB with no goal potential and we don't know their starting fullbacks.

Arsenal are awful. Maybe Kolasinac at 5m might become an option.

      de Gea
      Alonso Mendy Trent/Clyne

Is what I'm on at the moment.

          Actually you might be surprised.
My front 7 currently looks like:

          Salah, Silva, Ramsey, Mkhi
          Firmino, Zaha, Tosun.

          All quality options

Thanks for the response. Appreciate it.
I think whichever of Trent/Clyne starts, they'll never be safe from random rotations, so I'd rather stick with Van Dijk.
Regarding Man City, you're right that Mendy hasn't featured, but he'll still have been training with the squad, and will probably have a break before the season start. (I think that's what players generally do, right?) There's also the issue of full back rotation again. Laporte has had the whole summer off, yes, but Stones, Kompany and Otamendi are all also really good and will be vying a spot in the first team. I just think City's defenders are less certain than Utd's, and Ederson is also cheaper than De Gea.
Also hard to say whether Arsenal are awful when Emery hasn't had a game yet... I like him as a manager (though as a Sevilla (2nd team) fan I'm biased)

      *Lichsteiner in Arsenal too

Think your def is too expensive and too unbalanced.
If you want expensive GK get Leno (or stick to City one) and get 1 (maximum 2) premium defs to afford few 4.5 ones as Daniels, Cedric etc are great pick at that price imo

      utd - Bailly/smalling/ddg - probably bailly

There's nothing to suggest Bailly is first choice. I recall at the back end of last season a lot saying he's this great defender who's nailed, but Smalling played instead.

Mourinho gave his reason for why Bailly didn’t play. I think Bailly will be nailed after he plays every match in pre season I’m pretty confident about it. I know a lot people here will think he’s not first choice but I’m confident they will be proved wrong and everyone will have him in their teams.

He also had a long term injury before that which added to that. There’s huge difference between the Sanchez case & Bailly. He is United’s big signing and those 3-4 months were like pre season for him. It would have been madness to drop Sanchez for them.

I like the 2x 4.5-4.0 option they offer value. Heaton & Pope have served my very well last 2 seasons and I haven’t needed a premium gk. At 6m DDG is a bit too expensive and he has to be as good as last to be worth it.

Hoping Mavropanos becomes an option (less hope for Kolasinac at them moment, I feel). Otherwise, Bellerin might be the pick of the bunch. That said, I think many of us think Arsenal defence are great value, but we're still avoiding them. Could just be the uncertainty along with the poor first 2 fixtures. I'm currently on:

      4.5, 4.5/4.0
Coleman, Pva, TAA, Clyne, Bednarek 😀

        Hipster 😛
Personally don't think Coleman is gonna be worth it when you can get a 4.5 Everton defender. Also why do you think TAA + Clyne is going to be better than Van Dijk + Wan-Bissaka/Schelotto? Seems a bit of a waste of a Liverpool slot to me. PVA is also interesting, but would rather juts get a player from a premium team who is going to get 15+ clean sheets

No premium team is guaranteed 15+ CSs. That's quite a lot, but Palace could be up in the 10s come the end of the season, you never know! 😀

The worse part of the TAA + Clyne isdea is exactly what you say, the loss of a pool slot. I' have to commit to Firmino or Salah and stick unless I sell the leat nailed of the two Pool RBs (which is certainly a ossibolity as it becomes clear which is more preferred). I wrote down some benifits to the double up here: https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2018/07/06/community-round-up-world-cup-knockout-rounds-and-fpl-launch/?hc_page=2#hc_comment_18336306. Are you ever going to play your 4.0? If so (most likely due to injury, e.g. to VVD), I think Clyne or TAA will outscore your 4.0 🙂 Besides a Pool RB will be pushing VVD for point anyway, especially if they take some set pieces 🙂

I may or may not stick with PvA and Coleman. I definitely think Coleman is worth a million on his CB friends 🙂 I'm willing to play around though. I don't want to be stuck to no template! 😀

Tite should be sacked for the way he treated Bobby and pandered to a completely ineffective Jesus. And why neymar was on free kicks and not cout can only be down to neymar's power and control over the team. Because he is terrible at them.

Yeah, he pretty much got what he deserved. It was baffling to see Jesus, Willian, Paulinho etc. keep their places. Brazil's biggest let down was Neymar though - only Coutinho really turned up.

Jesus has been very good for them, but didn't show up this tournament. Though I agree Firmino should have played yesterday, you can understand the decision to keep faith with Jesus

Question to moderators: I'm very impressed with the number of articles coming out right now, but is anything in development by means of being able to improve the search / filter for articles? I think I also noticed when you click the 'Previous articles' button that it doesn't show the previous articles all the time.

This is never going to happen there is no culture of order among posters.
They tried RMT threads before but they never seem to take off.
Personally I think it is because of the layout of the site.
If they put more options on the menu bar it would be a much better help for it.
        General rate my team etc.
I doubt many people other then the obsessives actually click on the 'hot topics' where these things are put currently it does not stand out.

Yeah but the separate articles thing does not seem to work either.
Maybe pop ups on log in RMT - or would that be too annoying?
Easier alternative if the mods got stricter and moved posts or enforced bans on threads 'off topic' etc?

He's talking about searching for content; filtering the comments for specific "tags" (e.g. "Eliteserian" or a poster's username; potentially filtering *out* specific tags (e.g. posts tagged with "RTM"); and sorting by number of upvotes or other means. 🙂

I always found him a very frustrating player to watch - he has achieved a decent career, but I always feel he did not apply himself properly and learn the game.
Did he make the best of his ability?
      I am not sure.
It is a wait and see on Everton for me as they are apparently going to clear out and spend again.
Would love walcott to go to someone like Burnley/Palace.

Too early to answer any of those questions. Mane is more tempting at Firmino’s price as he’s a mid.

Deulo could be worth extra 0.5m over Cairney but a lot depends on he does in pre season and how many mins he gets. Peryera & Richarlison are fighting for similar positions.

Zaha & Tosun look like good punts at that price for start of the season with decent fixtures.

VVD not at risk, and also has attacking threat from corners. Don't think his threat quite matches Robertson's, but Liverpool had 17 clean sheets last year, and I'm happy or a repeat of that, with maybe 2 or 3 goals thrown in

I really hate being limited to 3 players per team. It stifles creativity. I want to try something like a TAA + Clyne double up, but it's probably too risky, because a liverpool player may 'emerge' as 'essential', and I'll need the slot.

Likewise, we can't take advantage of the value that happens to be in a particular team like Palace, so we're pushed into going for the same picks as everyone else. Why would it make the game worse to allow me to pick Speroni, Wan-Bissaka, PvA, Zaha, or something?

Sorry. I agree by the way. I just see them as individuals who happen to play for the same team rather than a triple or double or whatever. Palace played well most of last season, and could be useful in attack and defence this season if they get a bit more luck 🙂

          I don't think everyone would.

But if they did, it would be because the prices of the players were low (i.e. the players were viewed to be worth the price), so what's the problem with that? Their players would still be as likely to not get points as they were before they bought them. The Risk vs Reward is the same (in my eyes) for each player individually before and after they are selected in the team, regardless of who else is in the team. Plus you get the added drama of the risk that the team rotate or perform badly, and the FPL manager has a bum week because of it. Or vice versa.

It's just more possible combinations players possible for our teams. Less restrictive. Most people hate the idea of trippling up anyway ("too risky"), so why limit me to the same mentality as everyone else? 😀
