And then there were six. A European nation is guaranteed to win the World Cup this summer after South America’s final two challengers, Uruguay and Brazil, were despatched by France and Belgium in Friday’s quarter-final ties.

The bad news for Fantasy managers who own one or several of Philippe Coutinho, Neymar, Marcelo, Thiago Silva, Diego Godin, Fernando Muslera and Jose Gimenez – and there are many who do – is that their assets’ races are now run.

Coutinho was the most-owned player in the game ahead of Friday’s fixtures, while Godin and Marcelo both had ownerships of over 30%.

There is, at least, the consolation for those playing McDonald’s FIFA of being allotted five free transfers before the semi-final deadline next Tuesday evening. That is an increase of two transactions from the quarter-final limit and will in many cases be much needed to overhaul Fantasy squads that contain an abundance of players from eliminated sides.

We’ve got all the goals, assists, clean sheets and Fantasy talking points from Friday’s two quarter-final matches.

Uruguay 0-2 France

TOP-SCORING PLAYERS

  • Raphael Varane (£6.0m) – 12 points
  • Antoine Griezmann (£10m) – 9 points
  • Hugo Lloris (£5.9m) – 7 points
  • Corentin Tolisso (£7.3m) – 6 points
  • Samuel Umtiti (£5.9m) – 6 points
  • Benjamin Pavard (£4.5m) – 6 points
  • Lucas Hernandez (£5.0m) – 5 points

After Kylian Mbappe (£9.1m) hogged the limelight in the 4-3 win over Argentina, it was Antoine Griezmann‘s (£10m) turn to demonstrate his worth to the French national side – and Fantasy managers – with a starring role in the quarter-final win over Uruguay.

The Atletico Madrid forward’s teasing free-kick delivery was flicked in by centre-back Raphael Varane (£6.0m) for France’s opening goal and, while Fernando Muslera (£5.8m) could do little about that header, the Uruguayan goalkeeper was culpable for Les Bleus’ second.

Receiving the ball from Corentin Tolisso (£7.3m) around 25 yards from goal, Griezmann struck a speculative shot that Muslera could only palm up and into his own goal, Packie Bonner-style.

Mbappe, the most-bought Fantasy player ahead of the quarter-final deadline, ended the match with one point after picking up a yellow card.

Hugo Lloris‘ (£5.9m) superb save from a Martin Caceres (£5.8m) header was the closest that Uruguay came to a goal, as the 2010 semi-finalists struggled without injured striker Edinson Cavani (£9.6m).

Uruguay XI (4-4-2): Muslera; Caceres, Gimenez, Godin, Laxalt; Nandez, (Urretaviscaya 73′) Torreira, Vecino, Bentancur (Rodriguez 59′); Suarez, Stuani (Gomez 59′)

France XI (4-2-3-1): Lloris; Pavard, Varane, Umtiti, Hernandez; Pogba, Kante, Tolisso (N’Zonzi 80′); Mbappe (Dembele 88′), Griezmann (Fekir 93′), Giroud

Brazil 1-2 Belgium

TOP-SCORING PLAYERS

  • Kevin De Bruyne (£9.8m) – 7 points
  • Renato Augusto (£7.2m) – 6 points
  • Romelu Lukaku (£10.0m) – 5 points
  • Thibaut Courtois (£6.0m) – 5 points
  • Philippe Coutinho (£9.2m) – 5 points

Having almost failed to get past Japan in the last 16, Belgium produced a fine counter-attacking performance to eliminate Brazil and reach the World Cup semi-finals for the first time in 32 years.

Two first-half goals did for the Selecao. Nacer Chadli‘s (£6.9m) inswinging corner was flicked past his own goalkeeper by Fernandinho (£6.2m) for Belgium’s opener before Kevin De Bruyne (£9.8m) finished off a swift breakaway to double his country’s lead. The excellent Romelu Lukaku (£10.0m) picked up a deserved assist for De Bruyne’s strike, which was reminiscent of the Manchester City midfielder’s arrowed effort in the 5-0 win over Swansea City in April.

Substitute Renato Augusto (£7.2m) nodded home a chipped cross from Philippe Coutinho (£9.2m) to halve the deficit, but a sustained period of late Brazilian pressure came to no avail.

Thibaut Courtois (£6.0m) collected three extra points for his nine saves made, one of which was a fine injury-time stop from Neymar (£12.1m). The Brazil forward cut a frustrated figure all evening as he was thwarted by Courtois and denied a penalty claim by referee Milorad Mazic.

Thiago Silva (£6.2m) should have scored from a Neymar corner when the match was still goalless, but could only turn the ball onto Courtois’ post from point-blank range.

Brazil XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Fagner, Silva, Miranda, Marcelo; Paulinho (Augusto 73′), Fernandinho, Coutinho; Willian (Firmino 45′), Jesus (Costa 58′), Neymar

Belgium XI (3-4-3): Courtois; Alderweireld, Kompany, Vertonghen; Meunier, Fellaini, Witsel, Chadli (Vermaelen 83′); De Bruyne, Hazard, Lukaku (Tielemans 87′)

    Thoughts on:

    A) Alonso Robertson Aguero
    vs
    B) Coleman PVA Kane

He was dropped because he had a disagreement with Sampaoli. And not like he's ever been good or the main striker for Argentina.

His ownership is a problem, but on the other side whenever I played this game in that direction, being scared of ownership,I was always falling in rankings
But as default captaincy option instead choosing 1 of Firmino/Mane? maybe thats the case to go with him

If I don't get Salah, I don't plan to get Mane for cover's sake. I'd find a better talismanic replacement and/or spread the cash. Even at 13m, Salah seems to be a more sure-fire bet than Mane, i think. Firmino is pretty solid too. Mane is a gas: a breeze or whirlwind, but who knows which?

            1. Klopptomist Scott Jelly
              • 8 Years
              7 years, 10 months ago

It’s not for the sake of cover - I genuinely think he’s been underpriced. But yeah he was a bit inconsistent last season, but then missed bits and bobs through injury and suspension - had a solid run where he was matching Salah I think but may have imagined it

                7 years, 10 months ago

I think it was imagination, sorry to say. At one point he complemented him quite nicely, but he never really matched him. I remember looking at his double digit hauls all season, there was about three at most

I'd rather have Aubameyang from the start to save getting him in for GW3, Davies has had a full pre-season so only need him to play the first 2GW's (new, FUL) before shipping him out for Sokratis, I'll admit I'm scared to go without Salah but I feel Mane+Firmino should match Salah+6mST

Have to leave one on the bench.

Not Olsen(my only gk), Rakitic, Modric, Granqvist or Kane obviously.
So it has to be one of...
    Augustinsson, Claesson, Lovren or Badelj.

Claesson has got points in 3 out of 4 games, Augustinsson got a decent chance of a cleanie and scored vs Mexico, Lovren a fir shot at a cleanie.
Badelj will probably don´t start but if he gets subbed in he has a fair chance to score imo against, by then, a desperately chasing Russia.

    Please RMT

    Fabianski, McCarthy

    Ogbonna, Cedric, Daniels, Dunk, Schindler

Hazard, De Bruyne, Eriksen, Sigurdsson, Stephens

    Kane, Tosun, Zaha

Plan is to play 343 with 5 way rotation of defenders and rotating keeper. Used this tactic past 2 season and racked up over 2000 points each time. Thoughts?

I read an article on the winner of FPL in 2017 and he said that investing in midfield at the cost of the front line was a game changer for him.

Here is what I have so far:

    DDG,
    TAA, Alonso, Mendy
    Salah, Silva, KDB, Mkhi, Ramsey
    Quaner, Kane

    Begovic, Bednarek, Wan-Bissaka, Wells

    Welcome thoughs...

      I like it tbh.

I'm going for a similar approach just not quite as heavy in midfield. Opting for Firmino & Zaha which still allows for a strong, balanced team.

All on pen duties, and formation. If silva goes 3 at the back sending coleman and baines up the field, will depend on pens. Siggy getting them would make coleman better. There's even a doubt if baines can go "alonso" on that formation. For now coleman. IF baines starts+pks then baines

          I like Tomkins.

Palace defence improved under Hodgson, if I remember correctly, and Tomkins has scored 6 goals in 2 seasons.

          Also unsure on Bednarek's starts.

Think Sweden will definitely keep a clean sheet today. All England's goals have come from set pieces. Sweden have the players and organisation to deal with this and England will be left unable to break them down from open play.

6/9 have either directly or from pens resulting from set pieces.

The ones that didn't we're Kane's fluke heel goal, Lingard's screamer and a penalty conceded by Panama.

This all against far worse defences than Sweden. England will no doubt be able to break them down

Good points but people said that about Uruguay yesterday and the gulf in class *on paper* wasn't as great as that between Sweden and England. I'm sure it'll be tight though - an early goal would be key.

      1. Dāzzy
        • 7 Years
        7 years, 10 months ago

The gulf in class in that game is nowhere near as much as it is today. Alli is useless Sterling has nothing but pace, Lingard nothing but movement, Kane world class tbf. England defenders are average and error prone. Forsberg best technical footballer on either team.

        1. Dāzzy
          • 7 Years

I mean there is a very small gulf in class today compared to yesterday.

I agree that there is a smaller difference in class between England and Sweden than compared to England's previous opponents. Which is why I hope we have learnt the lessons of Iceland and are prepared for long throws, set pieces, and counter-attacks. Sweden are not that good offensively so let's not play into their hands.
