The vast array of budget options at Burnley last season has seen their players receive some price hikes, which may change our perception of their performances in 2018/19.

The underlying defensive numbers and some appealing early-season fixtures mean that Nick Pope and his centre-backs are still factoring in Fantasy plans at this stage.

Going forward there was surprisingly underwhelming attacking data considering that both Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood showed they could be a decent third striker in Fantasy teams.

Fantasy Football Scout members can now read on as we delve deep into the numbers from 2017/18 to weigh up the best players to look at now that the new game has launched.

World Cup Data

We’re delighted to offer World Cup data as an early addition to our regular season offering to help those playing Fantasy games over the summer.

We’ve secured Opta data, not only for the tournament itself, but also from the Qualifying Rounds for Europe and South America and for international friendlies involving the participating nations. This includes all the matches played right up to the tournament kick-off.

Just to stress, this World Cup offering comes packaged with the regular Fantasy Football Scout membership.

    Ederson
    Cedric Mee Robertson
    Sane Salah Eriksen Mhiki
    Zaha Firmino Arnautovic

    Subs:
    Begovic, Bednarek, Masuaku, Schelotto

Is the team well balanced, if not what changes would you make?

GW1 is all about balance, the distribution of funds is way off. You need to upgrade the attack and downgrade the midfield. Which players specifically are better to pick, you’ll find that out during pre-season, but for starters your line-up price wise is not good.

Incredible statistical analysis has proven beyond doubt: https://mathematicallysafe.wordpress.com/2018/07/08/fpl-analysis-the-impact-of-fixtures-on-player-performance/

Ultra cheap Goalkeepers is the way to go.

Go for premium defenders (who have good fixtures)

    Invest heavily in midfield

Cheaper strikers offer comparable value to premium strikers

This is gospel. Ignore this PhD level stuff at your own peril.

But what if DDG's ownership goes above 50%? Then he's essential right?

Bookmarked for another time. Looks good, thanks.

But I can tell you now that you shouldn't fall into the structure trap. You still need to assess each player individually and in combination with others. I goes without saying that some premium defenders, for example, are better value than others. So you shouldn't get 3 premium defenders unless you can find 3 that you think are great value.

I don't know if I'd go so far as to describe research based on bookmakers' odds as 'gospel', but it's some excellent analysis 🙂

I would upvote this but your insistence on sensationalising everything you write like it's the most important thing in the world is silly. You might be doing it tongue in cheek, but it kind of doesn't matter.

When I read this I 100% don't expect to find anything proven beyond doubt, because such a thing barely exists. - Let alone in FPL.There's no guarantee we'll be able to generalise the conclusions from these data to the new season.

I don’t think the interpretation for the strikers is right. Diminishing value, yes...but a more suitable approach after this analysis would be to only play with 2 starting strikers of which at least one is still premium. Last season offered 0 decent cheap strikers and rotation of 2 cheap ones, as he suggests it, is too unpredictable. I personally opted for a 4-4-2 formation and it proved to be optimal last season. There’s also 2 more factors you need to take into account with strikers now, that’s essential individuals and balanced distribution of funds at least for GW 1.

    Fabianski/ 4.5
    Alonso/ Cedric/ Tomkins/ Daniels/ Dunk
    Sane/ Eriksen/ Mane/ Masuaku/ 4.5
    Lukaku/ Aguro/ Zaha

    Thanks

😉 this game does my head in some times though, loads of time preparing/analysing just to be done over by luck.

Time to go full casual 😎

Both positive and negative. We see players finish top 5k every season. I'm hoping for another top 1k to prove least year want a fluke.

I admire the attempt, but this particular iteration doesn't look great.

Value works at the level of the individual and combinations of individuals. You simply can't say that "value is in midfield" and but the most expensive midfielders. You have to buy the most valueable midfielders. In fact you have to buy the most valuable players across the team, or rather the most valuable combination of players across the whole team, which may or may not result in a formation with 5 at the back.

For me, last season, it pushed me into a 5-2-3. But even I can't see how that's possible this season, because there is too much value in the midfield below the prices of Mane and KDB, as well as below Valencia et al. 🙂

your admiration was all I was after 😛
But yeah, I get your point, it just comes down to picking the best value for money players in each position, and that's a rough task.

At this point i'm really not sure I like any of the cheaper mids, but i'm sure some will pipe up quickly once the season starts

Glad I could give you what you wanted 🙂

If that's how you feel, then by all means don't let us bully you into choosing players you don't want. Try something a little different. You can switch in GW 3 by downgrading KDB and upgrading Arnie if you need to make a drastic change.

yeah, there is definitely some scope for manoeuvrability in the set up, and I think I might just stick with it for now and see how pre season goes. Problem with me is i'm too knee jerky, so just end up jumping from one premium striker to the next and missing all their hauls, which is obviously a fault on my part.

Anyways, that's for your input 🙂

Why not? Or the change captain option? takes away alot of the self hatred I see people having on here when bench players perform and someone from their starting 11 only makes a cameo, for example...

There's more skill in the decision-making process involved in whether to stick or twist from a captain than in the current system. Anything that removes an element of luck in a game that is already mostly luck can only be a good thing.

Better off removing captains if that's your thinking. You get penalised for having a decent captain score 7-10 vs someone with a 1 or 2 who gets the big score on Day 2 or whatever.

            Yes pls, remove captains.

I don't like the twisty caps, because it requires that 4+ million people log on for a specific time once, twice, maybe multiple times a week (in a DGW) in order to make a change, That's a big ask and gives FPL lunatics like me a big advantage over people who have lives.

That's the way it is - if you feel brave or chasing, you can twist from 7-10.

To give a counter-example from the current system - your captain gets injured 10 minutes in and you're stuck with 2x1. What's the skill there exactly? That you failed to predict the injury? Players shouldn't be punished for that. (it's fair enough if he gets a red card of course, in which case you're not able to twist)

The good old injury line is bad luck. Perhaps if your captain gets injured in 1st half then a change is allowed otherwise a 90 minute fail being replaced is a terrible idea.

Yeah but too complicated. "Did he come off for injury or was it tactical." etc

Simplicity of rules often makes the best games and allows the game to be accessible to more people. But I'm not going to get myself back into trouble by talking about my invalid opinions 😀

From the player's point of view - an injury is unlucky and can't be controlled. But he can definitely control whether he gets a red card or not. That's what I meant.

VAR won't eliminate anything. If anything instances of "luck" will be more unlucky, because they they be fewer, so have more relative impact on your score compared to other managers' scores.

quite the contrary. If you have 2 captain material players - say for example Kane and Salah.

more often than not 1 of them will perform if the other doesn't. Would simply eliminate all skill and turn it into picking the big hitter who plays first - oh wait he only got 2 points let me switch to other big hitter

And that's clearly better than the current option. There's more luck involved in jammy bench points, equally jammy vice-captains, or non-jammy captains you play for only 10 minutes before getting injured.

my point was you eliminate skill... you need to have a little skill to pick the player based on fixtures, form etc.

However little skill that may be, it's far more than simply picking another player if the one you picked beforehand didn't perform

I'd say it's about the same. In Perces syatem you need to pick 15 players for that game, in the current system, you have to pick 15 players for that game. Different rules, different players, about the same skill/luck.

Perhaps skill is the wrong word - but there's a lot more decision-making involved in, say, whether to stick or twist from a 7-pointer, and I like that. Far more different permutations to consider - whether you're chasing, whether your opponent has the same players etc.

Also, obviously we choose our captains based on fixtures and form, but they invariably still fail quite often - see Kane vs. any bottom team at home last September/October for instance!

I understand your points of course, but as I said I like the extra element of decision-making, and I really don't think there's any more skill in the current version.

Your proposal doesn't remove luck from the current format. It's an add-on. It requires it's own skill and has it's own luck. The probability of things working in and against your favour is still out of 100% in both parts, and it's still out of 100% when taken together.

I wonder if that explains my point better - that it's still the same amoutn of luck and skill?

The only difference is that your proposal requires more time and effort for the managers, so casuals will be disadvantaged.

Obviously anything is out of 100%. But I guarantee that a careful manager will have far fewer captain fails under the world cup system than the FPL system. (unless of course they're playing recklessly and twisting on anything under 10 or whatever)

Also let's forget about different definitions of skill - adding another element of decision-making to the game is a good thing in my book.

Of course everyone will have fewer captain fails if you're comparing it to the current format. How absolutely-bleeding-obvious!

But relative to other players, the skilled will be as unlucky as they are now, because it's based on the same actions of footballers on a pitch.

But that's the main point - it's less unlucky if you have fewer captain fails surely? (for the same reason I'd also be down with removing captains altogether, as we've discussed elsewhere)

I understand your point that the amount of luck relative to other FPL managers wouldn't change, but what I'm trying to achieve is reduce the element of luck in absolute terms. (hence also removal of captains, although as I said I like the extra element of decision-making involved)

It depends what a fail is, because they would be defined differently in the two systems.

There would be fewer scores lower than 10, for example, because you get at least 2 bites at the cherry. But that's not very interesting, is it?

Manual substitutions and captaincy changes work in cup competitions because you need to keep the most expensive players at a reasonable price so you can enter a full team during the later rounds.

It's undoubtedly a better option. There is enough luck in the game as it is, replacing that element of luck with decision-making can only be a good thing. Anyone who says otherwise is a casual 😛

Quite the opposite. It hands an advantage to fanatics with too much time on their hands. Casuals will lose patience with their low scores when they forget to switch the captain. I don't think it reduces luck either, if everyone is twisting on appox 8pts or less, what's the difference really?

          I'm a dullard - I'm not twisting on 8 points 😀

And why shouldn't the fanatics have the advantage anyway? It's not like FPL was ever won by a casual really.

Also, interestingly - though this is far from universal because it's a tiny sample size - a couple of friends (who are most definitely casuals in FPL terms) have been a lot more attracted by the world cup version. I agree that they might feel differently over a marathon version of the game, like FPL.

There are so many reasons why that could and is the case. Rolling subs and captains is THE reason. It's a necessary component of this knockout format. Anyway, that's enough I think. Good night 🙂

Because it's just a game and should be accessible to all. Even as a fanatic I don't want the game to force me to be active constantly to be on a level playing field with everyone else. I want the option to sign in on Saturday morning to order my team and sign out again.

Don't like that at all. Would prefer to get half points for all bench players if anything like that was introduced.

Everything almost in this game is luck .
The more decisions you have to make , the more skill there is .

      So a big Yes !

You can a have strategy of a Day 2 captain if it fails ,
ODW eve1 just captains Salah and the 1 dude who captains someone else gets lucky to go ahead .

Look if you can twist from captains , it negates the captain choices in general ,If you can't score on the 1st day , you can maybe on the 2nd . It becomes more of a squad thing , which player has more 'good picks' . Its almost like removing captains .
But if you and every other player is going to Captain Salah and he fails against West ham , and some lucky dude captains Jota against Everton who scores a brace , wheres the skill in that ?

Look if you stick on 8 points and someone twists for 20, where's the luck in that. If you both twist to different players (when you were originally even on Salah's 2pts) and one guy gets 20 compared to you 4, where's the skill in that? Again I could go on with loads more iterations, but I'm going to bed.

Look at the end of the day, the system is still built on the probability of real life events. You're still picking 15 players who perform those events. Your decisions are based on that probability, and the skill is trying to raise the probability of points from potential events. So the number of times you make the right call or the wrong call are about the same.

Look I could perhaps see an argument that the extent to which a wrong call punishes you is less, which could be seen as reduced "luck". If this is what you're going for, then I think the best solution is to remove captaincy altogether.

Thanks for your time. Goodight 🙂

    Can't understand people trolling karius
Ok he is a rubbish gk. But cheapest way to get a liverpool defender (same as ederson for city)
If you troll karius and people who got him you are actually trolling vvd and robertson ownsers too. Because if karius concede a goal there is no cs for them too.
Quality of the gk is not much important. You want your cs

He's in my team at the moment. I don't think I've ever owned a keeper above 4.5. Could be mistaken. I'd prefer a 4.5er, and would normally stick regardless of fixtures, but the stand-out option, Fabianski, has rubbishfixtures. Might find myself crawling back to him before GW1, though.

        I can't change ederson

And they don't have any other nailed defender

My first attempt (done quickly might I add) so be gentle 😉

    Pickford, Stek
    Azpi, Mendy, Coleman, Daniels, Bissaka
    Hazard, Mane, Dilva, Hughes, Masauku
    Lukaku, Firmino, Wilson

Glaring problem is no Salah/Kane. Lukaku v Aguero is a toughie. Giroud is tempting.

On paper, looks good, but with WC still going on for Kaku and Haz, they both could possibly get an extended break. Same could be said of Pickford as well.

    32.6m ITB. 4 FTs left.

    Subasic, Fodder
    Pavard, Trippier, Young, Lovren, ___
    Rakitic, Lingard, Carassco, ___, ___
    Hazard, Griezmann, ___

    I’m thinking of doing:

    A) Modric, KDB, Maguire, Perisic
    B) Modric, Fellaini, Maguire, Kane

    Modric and KDB essential?

I think FPL could add a sub option within gameweeks but only for players who haven't yet played.

There's been times where i would've changed my mind mid gwk and put on a different 4.5 def to the one i had set to play or whatever

aye captains too. As long as the two players you're switching between haven't played i don't see the problem. Adds a different dynamic and preserves the guessing and whatnot which is what the game is all about.

The only thing is that you will have seen the teams in your mini league or whatever - but way i see it this makes it more tactical having to adapt your team if only slightly to try and outsmart your opponent

I don't mind this. Allows casuals who missed the deadline to at least try to regain lost ground by making a switch with the team they're left with, if such a switch is possible. So that's nice 🙂

You don't have to use it. You don't gain an advantage by using it. It's just if you change your mind, why not? I suppose the obvious answer is that a player could be injured or a lneup leaked, and many people would miss the information and fail to react. Okay, actually, I've changed my mind. I'm against the idea. Sorry Random Name

Injuries wouldn't affect it - it's what vice captains and automatic bench subs are for...

leaked lineups tho? happens all the time before gameweek deadlines anyway

            • 10 Years

I don't mean injured during a game. Injured the morning of a game or something.

The point about this and leaked lineups is that people have to react to it, which means people have to spend a specific portion of the week tied to FPL if they want to do well. Better to have one deadline a week imo

They already massively complicated it when they added the chips and another wildcard

We would have to construct a team with players on all days of the gw (ie Fri Sat Sun) and mini manage the capt and subs all weekend.

Most people wouldn't be able to do that all season.
