The Best Goalkeepers to Buy in FPL 2018/19

Now that the dust has settled following the launch of the Fantasy Premier League 2018/19 game, we can start to look at each position in a bit more detail. We’ll begin, as we often do, with goalkeepers.

David De Gea has been announced as the most expensive shot-stopper at £6.0m, which may deter some from investing in the Manchester United number one.

Meanwhile, Lukasz Fabianski looks set for high ownership given that he has held onto his £4.5m price tag.

Who are the best premium goalkeepers?

Ederson (£5.5m) looks to be the most viable premium goalkeeper option for the start of 2018/19. Not only do Manchester City have the best fixtures in the opening seven Gameweeks (playing all six of the most recently promoted clubs), their goalkeeper also benefits from being priced cheaper than some of his defensive colleagues: Nicolas Otamendi and Kyle Walker are both £6.5m, while Benjamin Mendy is £6.0m. John Stones, Vincent Kompany, Danilo, America Laporte and Fabian Delph – none of whom looked particularly “nailed” – are all £5.5m too.

Whilst goal and assist potential strengthens the case of Otamendi and co, rotation under Pep Guardiola could make Ederson the only member of the City backline who is assured of a start. After the Gameweek 1 fixture against Arsenal (a match City won 3-0 last season), City face Huddersfield (h), Wolves (a), Newcastle (h), Fulham (h), Cardiff (a) and Brighton (h) in their next six fixtures.

Thibaut Courtois (£5.5m) is another premium asset to consider, with Chelsea currently sat second for defence in our season ticker. In the first six Gameweeks the Blues have away fixtures at Huddersfield and Newcastle, as well as home matches against Bournemouth and Cardiff. Only De Gea and Ederson collected more clean sheets than Courtois last season and, like his Man City counterpart, the Belgian shot-stopper offers a slightly cheaper route than his defensive team-mates to potential shut-outs.

Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta have been handed £6.5m price tags, with Victor Moses and Antonio Rudiger marked up at £6.0m. Gary Cahill, David Luis, Andreas Christensen, Davide Zappacosta and Emerson all match Courtois’ price but, at this stage, are much less guaranteed a start.

Hugo Lloris completes the trio of £5.5m goalkeepers and has a strong case for inclusion in our squads too, considering that only one of his defensive colleagues will start the 2018/19 season at a cheaper price. All but Kyle Walker-Peters have come in at £6.0m, making Lloris the cheaper alternative for anyone looking at matches with Newcastle, Fulham, Watford and Brighton in the first six Gameweeks. Spurs do face Manchester United and Liverpool in that period, though.

Meanwhile, last season’s Golden Glove winner David De Gea has come in as the most expensive goalkeeper at £6.0m. As mentioned, his hike up from £5.5m is expected to cause some damage to his ownership figures. The United man kept more clean sheets than anyone else in 2017/18, but there are now more cost-effective options at Old Trafford.

Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and Diogo Dalot are all priced at £5.5m, while the reclassified Ashley Young, who has been handed the same price as De Gea but offers the prospect of attacking returns, could prove to be a savvy investment. What we can be assured of with De Gea and no other United defender, however, is guaranteed starts.

Elsewhere in United’s squad, Antonio Valencia is £6.5m and Chris Smalling starts at £6.0m.

Who are the best mid-price goalkeepers?

Whichever of Nick Pope or Tom Heaton gets a starting berth at Burnley is worth considering this season. Both goalkeepers start at £5.0m after the Clarets kept 12 clean sheets in 2017/18. Pope had an impressive campaign, finishing as the fourth-highest scoring goalkeeper despite not making an appearance until Gameweek 4. The extra money might be worth paying given that Burnley shot-stoppers often do well for save and bonus points, while just three teams (Man City, Chelsea and Crystal Palace) rank higher for defence on our season ticker in the first six Gameweeks.

England’s World Cup penalty shootout hero, Jordan Pickford, remains at £5.0m and also has kind fixtures in the opening six weeks. Arsenal are the only side from last season’s top six who he will face in that period, a run of matches that includes home fixtures against Southampton, Huddersfield and West Ham and trips to Wolves and Bournemouth. However, with Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams both priced up at £4.5m, the veteran centre-backs may provide more cost-effective cover.

Pre-season should give us an indication as to which Arsenal goalkeeper – Petr Cech or Bernd Leno (both £5.0m) – will start the season as Unai Emery’s first choice. Leno has a reputation for saving spot-kicks: the German goalkeeper has stopped nine of the 39 penalties he has faced in the Bundesliga.

Fantasy managers should avoid Newcastle United’s Martin Dubravka (£5.0m), as the Magpies currently sit bottom of our season ticker for defence. In their first six matches, the Magpies host Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal and travel to Manchester City, Cardiff and Crystal Palace. Only three goalkeepers (Loris Karius, Ederson and Lloris) kept more clean sheets than Dubravka after his debut in Gameweek 27. However, he ranked just 16th for saves made between then and Gameweek 38.

Who are the best budget goalkeepers?

Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) has made a swift return to the Premier League after former employers Swansea City were relegated. The Polish shot-stopper, who made more saves than any other goalkeeper last season, joins a side who had the joint-worst defensive record in the division in 2017/18.

West Ham face three of last season’s top six in the opening six Gameweeks, also playing Bournemouth (h), Wolves (h) and Everton (a) in that run of half-dozen matches.

The Hammers’ fixtures rotate perfectly with Southampton this season. A pair-up with Alex McCarthy/Fraser Forster (both £4.5m) should, in theory, give an unbroken run of home matches between now and the end of the season.

It’s hard to justify investment in Mathew Ryan (£4.5m) in the early stages of the season. Brighton face Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham in the first six weeks, with away trips to Watford and Southampton to come in Gameweeks 1 and 5; their only favourable match-up is a home fixture against Fulham in Gameweek 4.

The Seagulls’ home matches dovetail beautifully with Newcastle’s this season, but with Dubravka prohibitively priced at £5.0m, a £4.5m defensive double-up (e.g. Dunk/Lejeune) may be the better route to go when both sides’ fixtures ease off from Gameweek 8.

Our season ticker ranks Crystal Palace’ first nine fixtures as the most favourable from a defensive perspective, so Vicente Guaita/Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m) could prove to be an astute purchase.

Bournemouth’s opening fixtures are also particularly attractive, although Asmir Begovic (£4.5m) would surely lose out to a cut-price Charlie Daniels as many FPL bosses’ chosen Cherries pick in defence.

Palace and Bournemouth’s fixtures, coincidentally, intertwine exactly to give an unbroken run of home matches between now and Gameweek 38.

Cardiff and Huddersfield’s mixed starts would seem likely to deter investment in Alex Smithies and Jonas Lossl (both £4.5m), meanwhile.

What's up with the French fullbacks? I thought Pavard and Hernandez were placeholders for Sidibé and Mendy, but where are these 2 now?

Both are not 100%. Sidibe is dealing with knee and Mendy has some minor muscular injury. They also player horrendous in a match against Spartak U19 so with both of those things together, Id say Pav and Hernandez are first choice as of this moment.

18.5m to spend on a premium gk and two premium defenders. Can't be two Liverpool or City. What you reckon?

For defensive rotations, you want to minimise the number of games against top 6 opposition (Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal) and maximise home games. Anyone have a view on the best combos (doubles or trebles) out there?

Thats like asking if a fit Ramsey is worth it over Xhaka. Jota is significantly better player for FPL purposes but he is on a high end of what Id deemed worth it for him. At 6.0 hed be straight in but at 6.5 Ill probably wait and see.

Continuing the debate on Zaha. Here are the minutes per goal of mid-priced forwards:

    Wood - 163
    Murray - 183
    Arnie - 211
    Wilson - 233
    Perez - 258
    Defoe - 271
    King - 277
    Zaha - 283

Now, it's true that Zaha had better points per minute stats, but that's largely due to the fact that he was getting 5 points for his goals instead of 4, as well as his assists of course. All this points to the fact that he'd be a much better deal as a mid-priced midfielder, as usual, instead of a forward good for the occasional goal and penalty assist.

    1. Pierce34
      • 8 Years

I'm arguing whether or not he's a good attacking player for Palace of course - he clearly is - only whether he's that good a deal as a 7m forward.

Strikers baps for goals almost entirely wipes out the extra point for midefielder goals, I think.

        5 years, 10 months ago

Talking of BAPS, that really will be interesting concerning Zaha now he has been reclassified. I felt robbed on at least 3 occasions last season. What does he have to do to get 1 BAP!

      2. Pierce34
        • 8 Years
        5 years, 10 months ago

That's a good point but Zaha would still have scored less as a forward last season, based on someone working out the stats - I forget who, so can't credit!

Also he would still play like a midfielder - i.e. getting tackled a lot, not getting enough of his shots on target etc., all of which would still make him lose baps.

It comes down to your predictions for this season rather than whether or not a couple of extra assists might have gone in for him least season. I think Palace were unlucky last season, and should be good to improve. But depends if Zaha stays of course

            • 8 Years

In terms of my predictions, I think Zaha would be reverse OOP for a lot of the season, so wouldn't be worth it - especially now that he won't be getting clean sheet points. And I don't think I'd back him to improve his goal tally.

            1. Deulofail

Each to their own. It's too early to say anyway, so both our predictions are much less valuable than they will be the day before GW1 begins.

    3. AndyCook

His assists are generally greater in number which gives almost as many points as a pal excluding bonus and he tends to have a purple patch each season. He also doesn’t get rotated like most on that list.

What are you doing in the strikers dep? Currently on 2 mid priced and one 9.5. There is too much value in defence and mid to be overlooked.

I think Auba is the 'premium' striker that looks like he could be good value this season, but the first two fixtures + uncertainty with new manager makes me hesitant.

Firmino + Zaha + a cheapie could be the way to go.

How to approach team value in the coming season?

Would it be best to jump on the early bandwagons and ride the bull market even if you doubt the players on the rise can keep it up?

One thing that caught me out along with many others last season was the fact that some players seemed to be made of teflon when it came to price drops even when they were injured or being sold in huge numbers like Salah for instance.

Would it be best just to hold on to these players that seem to be given some kind of pass when it comes to price drops to keep up the value in the team even if you think you might get more point in the short term from another player?

It’s no longer worth chasing rises based on last year.

However it might all change. We won’t know until the season has begun nl

Fpl really made it hard for market traders last season, lots of surprises and curve balls thrown at us.The price change sites never really got a handle on it like the rest of us and they usually do as the season goes on.

Its hard for me to think how i am going to approach it this season.

The only real change from previous seasons seemed to be during the 'two week' game weeks whereby the number of purchases to trigger a price rise doubled (in comparison to a normal game week), so not many double digit rises were to be had.

There were many with Team Values of 106 + mill last season and it was a good benefit at the time of playing the second wild card .... so yes it is worth using your transfers early on to chase a few nailed on price rises. Of course your team needs to be set up accordingly, so try to have 15 nailed starters so that you don't need to make transfers to deal with players that don't start games, and you can then blow your transfer chasing the ££££££

I'm ranked 2215 atm in McDonald's wc ff, and looking to finish strongly. I'd really appreciate some advice. I have no chips left. Do these look like decent transfers?

Coutinho, Quintero, Muslera, Miranda, Granqvist -> Pogba, Lingard, Pickford, Pavard, Trippier

Would leave me with this team:

        Day 1: Griezmann(c), Lukaku,
        POGBA,
        Meunier, PAVARD

        Day 2: (K)ane,

        KDB Alli Fellani Pogba
        Maguire Kompany Pavard
        Pickford

        Bench: Kalinic Lingard A.Young Caleta-Car

If they don't take measures to address it they are only making a mockery of the multi team rule and they might aswell scrap it.

This kind of thing is my biggest gripe with the game and it loses its credibility if it is not going to bother to enforce its own rules.

Personally I'd go with Jota over Milli. I'd also try and upgrade Malone. If you downgraded Sane to Silva you'd have 1m to spare. Otherwise I like it, midfield maybe needs a bit more spent on it though.

I still don't see any reason for FFS to actually support England in any overt way? - it is a forum that provides advice regarding which Fantasy players to pick in various football tournaments (World Cups, European Championship, Norway League, Premier League etc.) - it just so happens the main league it covers is in England and is the Premier League, which incidentally is carried by 80 broadcasters in 212 territories worldwide and 70% of the players 'non English'

I don't have a single English player in my squad at the moment and will likely have just a few at any time.

Disagree with the approach though. Personally would start with 12 teams who are 'cheap' (so no Top 6, no Everton, no Leicester). Then the critical part for me is minimising the fixtures against those Top 8 teams. Then it is preferable to have a home game over an away game.

Man City can beat you 3-0 away from home or at home. The home / away things is overrated IMO. It is more important to avoid decent (Top 8) teams.

His games to goals ratio per club, and country for that matter.

He had those "stats" before he came to the prem and managed 5 goals in 14 appearances. Nothing to write home about, and nothing to predict a suddn upturn in goals. For that kind of prediction, you need to look at other factors 🙂

RMT take 3 - using WC and BB:

        Subasic Pickford
        Trippier Maguire Lovren Hernandez Pavard
De Bruyne Modric Rakitic Henderson Bradaric
        Kane Hazard Griezmann

        0.3 ITB

Thoughts? Too much England? Replace Henderson with Witsel or Kante?

        Thanks!

Subasic and Pickford play in the same day, I would change one for Lloris or Courtois (I have Pickford and Courtois, as I have no WC).
I like de attack (the same as mine) and defense (I have Strinic and Young over Maguire and Lovre, the rest is the same).
In the midfield I don't really like Henderson. If Fellaini is nailed I would go for him (maybe downgrade Raki for Lingard for instance).
