Now that the dust has settled following the launch of the Fantasy Premier League 2018/19 game, we can start to look at each position in a bit more detail. We’ll begin, as we often do, with goalkeepers.

David De Gea has been announced as the most expensive shot-stopper at £6.0m, which may deter some from investing in the Manchester United number one.

Meanwhile, Lukasz Fabianski looks set for high ownership given that he has held onto his £4.5m price tag.

Who are the best premium goalkeepers?

Ederson (£5.5m) looks to be the most viable premium goalkeeper option for the start of 2018/19. Not only do Manchester City have the best fixtures in the opening seven Gameweeks (playing all six of the most recently promoted clubs), their goalkeeper also benefits from being priced cheaper than some of his defensive colleagues: Nicolas Otamendi and Kyle Walker are both £6.5m, while Benjamin Mendy is £6.0m. John Stones, Vincent Kompany, Danilo, America Laporte and Fabian Delph – none of whom looked particularly “nailed” – are all £5.5m too.

Whilst goal and assist potential strengthens the case of Otamendi and co, rotation under Pep Guardiola could make Ederson the only member of the City backline who is assured of a start. After the Gameweek 1 fixture against Arsenal (a match City won 3-0 last season), City face Huddersfield (h), Wolves (a), Newcastle (h), Fulham (h), Cardiff (a) and Brighton (h) in their next six fixtures.

Thibaut Courtois (£5.5m) is another premium asset to consider, with Chelsea currently sat second for defence in our season ticker. In the first six Gameweeks the Blues have away fixtures at Huddersfield and Newcastle, as well as home matches against Bournemouth and Cardiff. Only De Gea and Ederson collected more clean sheets than Courtois last season and, like his Man City counterpart, the Belgian shot-stopper offers a slightly cheaper route than his defensive team-mates to potential shut-outs.

Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta have been handed £6.5m price tags, with Victor Moses and Antonio Rudiger marked up at £6.0m. Gary Cahill, David Luis, Andreas Christensen, Davide Zappacosta and Emerson all match Courtois’ price but, at this stage, are much less guaranteed a start.

Hugo Lloris completes the trio of £5.5m goalkeepers and has a strong case for inclusion in our squads too, considering that only one of his defensive colleagues will start the 2018/19 season at a cheaper price. All but Kyle Walker-Peters have come in at £6.0m, making Lloris the cheaper alternative for anyone looking at matches with Newcastle, Fulham, Watford and Brighton in the first six Gameweeks. Spurs do face Manchester United and Liverpool in that period, though.

Meanwhile, last season’s Golden Glove winner David De Gea has come in as the most expensive goalkeeper at £6.0m. As mentioned, his hike up from £5.5m is expected to cause some damage to his ownership figures. The United man kept more clean sheets than anyone else in 2017/18, but there are now more cost-effective options at Old Trafford.

Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and Diogo Dalot are all priced at £5.5m, while the reclassified Ashley Young, who has been handed the same price as De Gea but offers the prospect of attacking returns, could prove to be a savvy investment. What we can be assured of with De Gea and no other United defender, however, is guaranteed starts.

Elsewhere in United’s squad, Antonio Valencia is £6.5m and Chris Smalling starts at £6.0m.

Who are the best mid-price goalkeepers?

Whichever of Nick Pope or Tom Heaton gets a starting berth at Burnley is worth considering this season. Both goalkeepers start at £5.0m after the Clarets kept 12 clean sheets in 2017/18. Pope had an impressive campaign, finishing as the fourth-highest scoring goalkeeper despite not making an appearance until Gameweek 4. The extra money might be worth paying given that Burnley shot-stoppers often do well for save and bonus points, while just three teams (Man City, Chelsea and Crystal Palace) rank higher for defence on our season ticker in the first six Gameweeks.

England’s World Cup penalty shootout hero, Jordan Pickford, remains at £5.0m and also has kind fixtures in the opening six weeks. Arsenal are the only side from last season’s top six who he will face in that period, a run of matches that includes home fixtures against Southampton, Huddersfield and West Ham and trips to Wolves and Bournemouth. However, with Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams both priced up at £4.5m, the veteran centre-backs may provide more cost-effective cover.

Pre-season should give us an indication as to which Arsenal goalkeeper – Petr Cech or Bernd Leno (both £5.0m) – will start the season as Unai Emery’s first choice. Leno has a reputation for saving spot-kicks: the German goalkeeper has stopped nine of the 39 penalties he has faced in the Bundesliga.

Fantasy managers should avoid Newcastle United’s Martin Dubravka (£5.0m), as the Magpies currently sit bottom of our season ticker for defence. In their first six matches, the Magpies host Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal and travel to Manchester City, Cardiff and Crystal Palace. Only three goalkeepers (Loris Karius, Ederson and Lloris) kept more clean sheets than Dubravka after his debut in Gameweek 27. However, he ranked just 16th for saves made between then and Gameweek 38.

Who are the best budget goalkeepers?

Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) has made a swift return to the Premier League after former employers Swansea City were relegated. The Polish shot-stopper, who made more saves than any other goalkeeper last season, joins a side who had the joint-worst defensive record in the division in 2017/18.

West Ham face three of last season’s top six in the opening six Gameweeks, also playing Bournemouth (h), Wolves (h) and Everton (a) in that run of half-dozen matches.

The Hammers’ fixtures rotate perfectly with Southampton this season. A pair-up with Alex McCarthy/Fraser Forster (both £4.5m) should, in theory, give an unbroken run of home matches between now and the end of the season.

It’s hard to justify investment in Mathew Ryan (£4.5m) in the early stages of the season. Brighton face Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham in the first six weeks, with away trips to Watford and Southampton to come in Gameweeks 1 and 5; their only favourable match-up is a home fixture against Fulham in Gameweek 4.

The Seagulls’ home matches dovetail beautifully with Newcastle’s this season, but with Dubravka prohibitively priced at £5.0m, a £4.5m defensive double-up (e.g. Dunk/Lejeune) may be the better route to go when both sides’ fixtures ease off from Gameweek 8.

Our season ticker ranks Crystal Palace’ first nine fixtures as the most favourable from a defensive perspective, so Vicente Guaita/Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m) could prove to be an astute purchase.

Bournemouth’s opening fixtures are also particularly attractive, although Asmir Begovic (£4.5m) would surely lose out to a cut-price Charlie Daniels as many FPL bosses’ chosen Cherries pick in defence.

Palace and Bournemouth’s fixtures, coincidentally, intertwine exactly to give an unbroken run of home matches between now and Gameweek 38.

Cardiff and Huddersfield’s mixed starts would seem likely to deter investment in Alex Smithies and Jonas Lossl (both £4.5m), meanwhile.

Will probs change but having a play about with a Salah and Kane less team

    What do we think?

    Leno

    Mendy Coleman Robbo

    Mane Sane D.Silva Rambo

    Auba Zaha King

    Subs Fab Daniels Bednarek Neves

    Too much arsenal /city ?

I've gone without Kane/Salah aswell for now! Certainly leaves a more balanced team and I'm a big fan of the double City MF.

      Here's mine:

      Ederson (Speroni)

Van Dijk Davies Holebas Bednarek (Malone)

      Sanchez Mane Sane (Masuaku, Romeu)

      Aubameyang Firmino Tosun

Plan on bringing in Sokratis for Davies after GW2, and getting Azpi & Tomkins for Van Dijk & Holebas after GW3

      B. Both players are better in their own right, United have signed a new right back and Valencia is getting older. De Gea gets lots of saves and bonus and Mendy has barely played in the World Cup so he will hardly be tired

What are the chances of Dalot taking Valencia's place at right back? Tony has been one of their most consistent performers each season injuries aside!

Mourinho hailed Dalot as the 'best full-back in Europe' in his age group after he was unveiled, but the Portuguese will be eased into life in the Premier League with the help of team-mate Antonio Valencia.

Looks like it will be Valencia's place to lose...

First of all this is not trolling but a genuine question.

Do you like Willian? Is Willian a good player?

Most of you are probably going to say yes and I'd like to better understand why. He doesn't stand out much in terms of goals or assists yet plays nearly every week for Chelsea and Brazil as an attacking midfielder/winger.

    I'm just baffled.

    1. Deulofail
      • 10 Years

A year ago I'd have nailed this question. Now that I no longer want him at Arsenal, I'm looking for reasons to think he's terrible.

      1. noquarternt

Is it 'work rate' or something else fairly intangible? If it is- why doesn't he play in a CM position?

        1. Deulofail
          • 10 Years

I think consistency. It's been harder for him without being nailed in the team, but he had quality on the ball which meant he wouldn't contantly lose it. He worked for the team and did his part with few mistakes, and then began to find his shooting boots to make him more 'complete'. After last season, though, this is who Willian is as a concept. He wasn't that bad, but I'm guessing the consensus is that he's not as good as he should be cause of Conte, not 100% because of Willian.

            Thanks for this answer.

Yeah I haven't watched many Chelsea games, but it has to be something considering how many teams want him. Guess he just needs a great season in a team where he isn't an afterthought. At 29 he's getting on though.

I thought he was amazing in the second round match.

I'm more surprised he's seen as a luxury by Chelsea to be honest. He has tons of skill and a decent ability in front of goal. Like most players, he improves by playing. I think he should leave Chelsea if they keep buggering him about.

West Ham are rebuilding entire defence and I'm not sure Fab will have save points
        like at Swansea

Mkhi situation is not clear as Emery is new and might ask him to defend just like at United

Mee has UL and had a shin issue. Long might come in at times to ease the workload

I know, with home and away already designated it could be red if England decide to go red ( If they are allowed) v France by v Belgium it would have to be white as semi final 2 winner is away team

Early thoughts leaning me towards no Salah or Kane....though still having troubles fitting in all the players I want, such as a City mid. Main thought is Firmino -> one of the 7.0’s to give a more all round defence but then i’d have no Liverpool attack. Alternatively Mkhi to Walcott to give an extra 4.5 nailed on defender

    Fabianski 4.0
    TAA Tomkins Cedric Schelloto Peltier
    Hazard Eriksen Mkhitaryan Jota 4.5
    Aguero Auba Firmino

Man, I have a similar situation.

Also brought Young, Hernandez and Lingard.
      The 4th is De Bruyne.
My main concern is that, with this team I have now, I have to downgrade Rakitic to Fellaini or Chadli, so I think we just have to wait and see the lineups.

Neverthless, I'm worried that Rakitics performs well after i ditch him.
Aso had some doubts between Young and Maguire. Young has more set pieces and crosses, but Maguire is more of a threat inside the box... and he is cheaper.

Sad news of the passing of Dundee and Spurs legend, the great Alan Gilzean.

Saw Alan play on many occasions at White Hart Lane and he was of the great headers of all time, known as the King of White Hart Lane. Alan used to literally 'hold' himself up in the air waiting for the cross. You can see him in action in videos on You Tube.

Hey guys, are there private mini-leagues that people with high ranks in previous seasons can join? So far I have seen a league for players that have a previous top 10k finish. Any leagues that have higher requirements than that? For example previous top 1k finishes or a few top 5k finishes etc...

    Thank you!

There is a top 1k and a top 10k any season leagues they are what you are looking for.

I have never seen anything higher like a top 100 any season league but then again it would be a pretty niche crowed.

Bah. You can definitely get what looks like a 'better' team by leaving out Salah but knowing 40 per cent will captain the biggest ever points scorer on day 1 makes it terrifying.

I think I will. Given I've decided to forego Kane at least until first IB, I don't have to wreck my original draft to get him

      Forget about his ownership.

Just look at his opening fixtures and ask yourself whether he’ll justify 13m.

The answer to me is a very definite yes.

Yeah I don't like playing out of fear. If I pick Salah it's because I think he's gonna tear it up, I don't consider ownership.

It's a bit of both. If England had gone out in Rd1 despite two or three Kane goals, I would have picked Kane ahead of Salah at the prices. But no Kane means one of the main golden boot chances isn't in the mix. So I'm taking Salah.

Sometimes ignoring fear is something you have to do. Other times, it's foolhardy. If you in a league with 20 people do you want to risk falling miles behind half of them by end of August?

        1. Cok3y5murf
          • 9 Years
          8 years, 8 days ago

There is risk on both sides this year due to the increase in Salah's price. If you have Salah, the rest of your attack is a little weaker. If you don't, then vice versa. So if you don't and you believe your attack without him is stronger, then those 19 people could be at risk too. I don't think 13m is a no-brainer, at least not before the season has started, so both ways can work.

Also, just another thing to note is that Man City have excellent fixtures throughout August and September, so you do have another option to captain in Aguero as well.

Didn't Aguero become first choice eventually last season? Until he got injured and Jesus got fit again.

Anyway, Sterling is an option too then. I know 11m looks risky for him, but not if he replicates his output from last season. I wouldn't mind captaining Sane either when he's in hot form. Worked out for me a few times last season.

Sterling at 11m - 229 points last season.
The almighty Kane at 12.5m - 217 points last season.

If they replicate a similar output this season, you tell me who's value and who's overpriced.

        2. AndyCook
          8 years, 8 days ago

You can’t be miles behind really after a few fixtures. Even at 8 ppm if you captain a player who does something you are probably only handful of points down a week which should be made up mostly through the rest of the squad. Unless he hits 4 hat-tricks on the bounce - which let’s be honest isn’t going to happen

Ownership is literally irrelevant and I wish people would stop using it as an argument. If 80% of the players pick a terrible player and captain him you should laugh and stay away. Obviously Salah is not a terrible pick but the same applies to him. If you think his price makes him poor value just lol@owners and hide behind the sofa when he plays, knowing you spent the 13m better elsewhere.

Last season it was a simple choice of Salah v other players of a similar price and it was an easy choice .... this year it is -

a, Salah + £5 mill playing mid or
      b, Eriksen/Mane/Sane + David Silva/Ozil/Son/Pogba etc

What would you got for ?

      b for me 🙂

    8. AndyCook
      8 years, 8 days ago

You can also gain a lot by excluding a popular player who underperforms if teams have had to slice their budget to get him. You need one expensive player with a good fixture each game to captain, generally if a player is >10 million in price and you are not captaining he doesn’t represent value

    How's this look lads:

    Ederson
    Robbo Azpi Cedric
    Salah Pogba Silva Sane
    Wood Tosun Austin

    Speroni Daniels Milivojevic Schlotto

Gone light up front and would rotate Milivojevic with 3rd striker (whoever had the hardesr fixture that week)

For 6.5m you're relying on Mili to keep scoring pens which is possible but it's expensive, especially if you're benching him

Not worth it for that midfield imo

Austin will probably come back from the holiday unfit and unable to play more than 65 minutes a match, and that is if the manager even considers him first choice. Extremely risky pick.
