Having won the Premier League in 2016/17, Chelsea’s performance statistics for their fifth-placed finish last season were unsurprisingly inferior to their title-winning campaign.

The Blues scored 23 fewer goals than they managed in the previous season and conceded five more.

Several of Antonio Conte’s players did, nevertheless, play a prominent part in many Fantasy managers’ 2017/18 campaign.

Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso were the two highest-scoring defenders in Fantasy Premier League, with Chelsea keeping as many clean sheets (16) as they did in their championship-winning season.

Eden Hazard, without hitting the heights of the previous campaign, and Alvaro Morata both recorded double-digit goal tallies, meanwhile.

Uncertainty over Conte’s future as Chelsea manager continues to dog the club and indeed Fantasy managers’ abilities to assess the Blues’ squad for the coming season, but in Azpilicueta, Alonso and Hazard at least the west London club possess three players who remain at the forefront of our thoughts.

Fantasy Football Scout members can read on to see our full analysis of the five-times Premier League champions.

"Alonso’s total of 101 penalty box touches was the second highest among defenders" (from article above)

Who was first!?? Cant even think of a more attached defender...

This table doesn't have the player that A Betting Man said was #1 (post now deleted) as #1. What's going on? Was the post actually deleted because the information was false?

Haha I'm so confused. This looks the same as Rainy's table regarding penalty area touches, but I don't see Bellerin at the top. Also it says Alonso is joint 2nd with 20 touches, not 101 touches! What am I doing wrong??? 😆

Against Argentina's lumbering defenders it was fairly predictable that Mbappe would shine. Likewise it was predictable that he would struggle more vs. Uruguay's deep defence.

But I can't figure out how Belgium will defend vs. France at all. Any ideas?

Hard to tell.. Neverthless, Belgium's defence is clearly better than Argentina's and I think they won't concede many spaces either. And Griez has pens and set pieces, that's why I'll go with Griez over Mbappé.

Another thing that troubles me is Pogba vs. De Bruyne... I'm heading towards KdB but would like to hear other opinions.

Thanks. I don't really know, I haven't watched enough of France (not closely at least) to monitor Pogba. Definitely going KDB between the two, and although I have Mbappe, I might get Griezmann instead on my wildcard.

Martinez must be cooking up somethinh unorthodox again, I think. Ffs, he played Lukaku as RW and KdB as a false 9!
A 4-3-3 fornation was played vs Brazil, with Meunuer sitting deep and Verty as LB. Fellaini patrolled midfueld and shut down the no. 10, Couts.
I expect smtj similar vs France, with Fellaini on Pogba duty.

      1. Silva Bilva Tilva Pilva
        • 8 Years
        8 years, 6 days ago

I do hope KdB plays up front again.

The same with Modric and Rakitic... Don't know the one who will play closer to Mandzukic.

It's not just the defenders, note how Witsel blocked absolutely everything and even Fellaini got stuck in. It was an unusually strong defensive performance v Brazil. France will break with more pace though, less dithering 'Spanish-type' progression/possession so any space Belgium offer is very dangerous with the pace Mbappe in particular offers.

Arsenal have 2 tough games in gwks 1 & 2, but a nice long run after them.
What's your plan to cover their defence?

    A) get one and possibly bench him in the first 2 gwks?
    B) go without at the start but make sure you have a 5.5 def to transfer out for an ars def?
    C) go without any and without a plan to get in later, meaning even taking a hit after gw2 if needed to get an ars def?

    1. Moxon
      • 11 Years

Will use the first 2 weeks to monitor its strength and also who/if anyone is then worth getting in. Looking more into their attacking options really though

Is it possible Arsenal’s fixtures actually favor them? Who will be managing Chelsea and how prepared will the squad be in one month? Will City be impacted by WC participation particularly at the back? Could Arsenal benefit from Unai’s early appointment, early transfer dealings, and relatively little participation in WC? Not saying Arsenal players are likely to yield massive returns, but not hard to envision decent returns before a nice run of fixtures.

Still have my max captain for world cup fantasy footie, better to use it for the semi final or final + third place play off? Original thought was final but someone mentioned rotation in the third placed play off so having second thoughts.

    1. stat
      8 years, 6 days ago

Third place play off I think.

You'll know the teams an hour before the deadline so players being rotated isn't too much of an issue given the fact that you have 5 FTs. I think the 3rd place play off might be a more open game too and the players playing in it will have more energy if it's a team including a lot of well-rested players.

On the other hand, if you use it in the semis and England score from a set-piece it could be one of their CBs. Add a clean sheet to that and you're looking at around 24 pts from your captain.

Can anyone define "goal involvement" in Members table for me, please?

Is there anywhere I can find definitions/desciptions for the Opta measures used here?

    1. stat
      8 years, 6 days ago

Goal involvement means how many goals the player was involved in (i.e. assisted / scored) when he was on the pitch as a percentage of how many goals his team scored when he was on the pitch.

Cheers. Do you know if there's a way to see what sorting and limits people have used on the public tables? Nobody seems to write a solid description of the tables they produce, which seems almost self-defeating.

        1. Deulofail

(Well forget about sorting, that's obvious, but the limits are important)

(Actually perhaps I mean "conditions" more than "limits")

            1. stat
              8 years, 6 days ago

I don't think there's an option for that but it would certainly be helpful if you could import a table and edit it for yourself - that way you could see all the conditions.

Yeah. The lack of transparency I think is what put me off tables when I first became a member a year ago. A comment section to discuss and and questions about each table (and a section for help like I'm asking now) would be nice. Plus a change of etiquette so people don't publish something unless they're willing to describe it in objective terms (and interpret it if they wish). Or a way of seeing this automatically.

FPL Virgin's Talisman table for instance is based on goal involvement over 25%, but Aubameyang isn't on in the table. I had to check I understood the definition and make my own table to check that he was over 25%. I can't even comment on the table to warn others that there's a condition acting on the table. It could be that I'm missing something obvious.

I'm putting together a list of things to tweak for tables to be worked on before the season starts.

                  I'll add these:
                  - list the conditionals applied to them to help other users understand the dataset on offer
                  - see what sorting and limits people have used on the public tables
                  - change the reminder to write a description to encourage descriptions

                  Anything else?

Too much cash in defence imo. Arnie, it remains to be seen how he will be used, with Pellegrini coming in and all Could work, but if defenders is how you want to go, then cool. Just feel more premium strikers is necessary.

          Mmm, no.

          I like a strong defence, but ....
I'd wait to see id Chelsea sort out their mayhem in time.
I'd wait o see if Otamendi is selected ahead of Stones, Laporte and Kompany.
I'd wait on Spurs too - they'll be missing so many players due to WC exertions, I fear they'll start badly.
Looks like Mahrez will join City this week in which case he and Dilva will be competing for far too many midfield spots.

You're wasting 0.5m on a sub keeper - you're not going to drop DDG.

What's everyone thinking for France v Belgium? Going to be a great match. Seems like a lot of places are picking France. I have this feeling that Belgium will pull it out, maybe 3-2.

If Martinez reverts to a back 3 it's going to be a very long day for Belgium

It's going to be a cracking game. I can't separate them so I've punted on 2-2 aet and penalties!

    Thoughts?Decided to downgrade Auba->Firmino

    McCarthy
    Robertson-Ward-Cedric
    Salah-Lamela-Mkhitaryan-Siggurdson
    Firmino-Aguero-Zaha

    Leno-Stephens-Peltier-Evans

    How does it look?

Zaha will be reverse OOP, might still be worth it but I think theres better value up front in having someone actually playing striker in there like Tosun or King
