Crystal Palace look set to be a source of effective budget options in the early part of the 2018/19 campaign.

The Eagles favourable fixtures in the first nine Gameweeks, combined with some impressive underlying numbers towards the end of last season, mean there are viable options to consider in defence, midfield and attack.

Under Roy Hodgson, Palace made improvements in more than 20 key areas last time out compared to 2016/17, and that is expected to continue into the new campaign.

That data is available to Fantasy Football Scout members to look at in the Members’ Area, and they can also read our in-depth analysis of it in the article below.

Other than Masuaku, Ayite and Fonte which other 4.5 mid (not CDMs) has a chance of getting starts or sub appearances? Thanks

Chalobah , he was really good last season before his season ending injury , interestingly he came on as a sub for Andre Gray in the last game of the season against Utd with Watford chasing the game

I rate him. If he appears to be nailed on I'll get him as my 5th mid.

Anyone care to guess how City will line up once full strength? (Not how you would line them up:) but how Pep will line them up) of course there will be rotation but there should be a solid 11 formed.

Very worried about rotation nobody safe

But that's the point. He doesn't think in terms of a first-choice XI for all occasions. It's more a matter of trying to second-guess who'll get more game-minutes and whether their price correlates to value.

For me, the only certainty is Ederson, so I've got him in. I expect Mendy to be heavily used so am starting with Laporte with the intention of switching to Mendy when he's rested. Further up the pitch is a rotation minefield - I'm starting with Sane with the intention of switching to De Bruyne. After those three, I just don't have enough confidence to invest.

      Ederson
      Walker, Ota, Kompany, Mendy
      KDB,Fernandinho (Jorginho),D/Bilva
      Sterling (Mahrez), Kun, Jesus (Sane)

You're hedging with 4 there, and no Stones or Laporte, their record-breaking expensive defender!

The brackets are subs/rotation players. I don't think Pep will use the younger CBs more than the senior players at least in the tough games

I think he will. He's seeing Stones coping under pressure in the WC. Otamendi is always not-quite-good-enough and Kompany always breaks. Your rotation choices kind of supports my point. So for me, that really only leaves KdB, the keeper and wingbacks.

Definitely still a concern, you dont want that type of worry going into GW1 and need to fix it before GW2. United do have a great team prediction thread (or they used to) on redcafe.net before games. People on there mostly get it pretty right.

Tosun, Zaha and Arnie all have equal pros and cons imo, but all are more likely to get full game time than poor Marcus. His situation will be even worse if United get this Serb they're chasing.

          Whatever... 🙄 🙄 🙄

          10% ownership v
          Lingard (38%) and Kane (48%)

He's rated 3rd in England's 'chances per minute' this WC from the regular starters. All his chances have come in the box.

Brace potential, sure that's based on his Spurs returns, (but doesn't mean that should be discounted) he's had a few braces for them after all...

Hazard and Fellaini out for Lingard and Lovren.

Also twisting Griez for Kane (c) and bringing Pickford, Lingard and Young for Courtois, Fellaini and Hazard.

        Pickford

Mbappe (c) -> Kane an easy decision.

Lloris staying on, Pickford remains benched.

      Lloris (7)
Pavard (6), Vert (1), Maguire, Trippier
      KdB (2), Kante (2), Modric
      Mbappe (1), Lukaku (2), Kane (c)

Lost top spot in my cash mini league, behind by 8pts, pretty sure my rival will keep Griez (c) and has Trip, Lingard, Modric and Kane to play. He's played all his chips, I've got max cap to play in the final round.

True, but they will have played four of those (assuming they get through) before the PL season starts so you could argue that they'll be well and truly match fit. Plus their early fixtures are very good.

I think it’s more th e uncertainty it introduces. We knew they were good last year setled into their routines. This is uncharted territory for them, their preseason will have to be pulled in and compressed vs. What it would normally be, more games more travel, bigger squad etc.

They are still obviously quite a good unit, but too many new variables introduced to have confidence in them imo.

As you say it could work to their advantage early on though who knows.

Has got youth on his side and his pace and positioning means he is essentially a winger who likes to get into the box on occasion - probably even more so under Silva.

Baines is not the player he once was - still decent, but lacking the pace of Coleman. Might be on set-pieces - but might not. At 33, wouldn't be surprised if Silva is looking for a replacement.....

This is what I'm looking at. Only issue is if Aguero starts on fire and holds his place with those city fixtures GW2 onwards it would be heart breaking to watch him fire them in after swapping.

Then again Auba may be essential come GW3. I mentioned the same problem in my post below.

    Arsenal GW 3 onwards.

Do we think Auba/Mkhi will be essential from this point onwards?

Trying to decide if I need to plan for one, and if so which, or just double up and leave them there to rake in the points since between them they should be involved in most arsenal goals.

Pre-season will probably give us some idea, but the most popular option at the moment is start with Mhiki and Aguero and then reassess in gw3.

That's what I'm on currently - although I'm not a fan of planning transfers, especially at the beginning of the season. Might just start with Auba.....

It's sort of fortunate that they have those first two fixtures. You can't trust line-ups in pre-season friendlies, so we can assess how Arsenal do in the first 2 GWs before committing ourselves. I'll be watching with an eye on Auba, Mkhi and probably Sokratis.

They look a great source of FPL value this year, but the new manager leaves a doubt over everything to do with them.

Auba, Laca, Ramsey, Mkhi and even Ozil are all options at their prices. Monreal & the Goalkeepers (only 5.0’s!) too.

Just need to see some games to see how they’re lining up, hownthey’re Playing, who the managers favourites are etc.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see anything from new manager sacked by November, to Triple Arsenal being essential by GW5 & everything in between 🙂

FWIW, I am very positive on Mkhi & Lacazette & a bit neutral on Auba because of his position and price tag.

Cheers guys, seems like the best option is to wait out preseason then.

My current draft has money tied up in Sanchez to allow me to quickly change to a front 3 of Zaha Auba Kun if needed but also allows a straight swap from Kun -> Auba if Jesus looks like the golden boy again.

Crazy that Kane might not be in my team for much of the season! Guess there's just a few more options emerging up top this year than last.

I think the same. Good chance once people have picked him and realise he won't play early on etc his value will have dropped a bit before I want him to ease the amount of transfers required.

Thing about Kane is, apart from the extra burden of the WC, he never scores in August, and Spuds have to bed into their new-old stadium, which I think will hamper them for a while.

By the time Kane is ready to start firing, a million casuals will have sold him and his price will be 0.5m less!

England are lucky they are coming up against a tired Croatia team, it may be enough to see them through to the final, but jeez France would be a different beast altogether compared to what they have faced so far.

They seem to know how to take 'em, and have a keeper who knows how to save 'em, but surely their legs won't last a third 2-hour game. A young, fit England should run them into the ground before it gets that far.

I wonder have FPL priced Salah too cheaply? CR7 & RVP we’re both 14.0’s after their knockout seasons as far as I can recall... and Salah scored way more than their top scores last year... why he didn’t get a 13.5 or 14.0 is a bit strange...

    1. Andy_Social

He's only got the one season behind him. He may well relatively fade, or opponents suss him out.

He's still nailed on as captain to my teamsheet, but he's be easy to edge out if he does turn out to be flat.

Potentially, although with CR7 he scored 31 goals in his breakout FPL season & got hiked to 14.0... in his 5 prior seasons he scored 38 combined so it was really one good season that triggered his rise.

RVP actually had a better season the season before his big rise to 14.0, so it’s hard to figure out why Salah wouldn’t have been more expensive, maybe it is literally because he has only had one season, but I think that could be an incorrect bias on FPL’s part, he does look 0.5 - 1.0 cheaper than he should be, maybe more.

  22. Will Aguero and Jesus play together?
    Eden Wizard

The case for Jesus & Aguero game time.

I studied all of Man City's games where Mendy was available for 1) Jesus & Kun trends and 2) Mendy &/or Sane trends (see bottom article those who aren't familiar with the history).

    1) Jesus & Aguero played 5 of 7 games together as a front 2.
    2) Mendy started 5 of 7 (after missing the first 2) and, only 1 game with Sane (who played opposite on Right Wing).

    We can conclude that:
Mendy is first choice to provide left sided width, meaning he's nailed when fit.
As per the article below and contrary to belief, Pep DOES like playing a front 2 with both strikers.

N.B. I ignored the Carabao cup as featured irregular starters.

    https://www.thenational.ae/sport/football/pep-guardiola-mendy-absence-to-blame-for-not-pairing-jesus-and-aguero-together-1.677394

TL;DR - Jesus & Aguero should start often together when fit and, Mendy is nailed when fit 😆

I wouldn’t agre, not even Pep pays 52m for a left back and has him anything other than first choice lol. Mendy was brought in for big money to be their first choice left back.

Stones was brought in to be the future first choice after Kompany & Ota, he took strides towards it last year.

There are still far too many variables to be making a case at this time.

      1) Mendy is still at the world cup, will be until Sunday, then will have a holiday and will therefore miss most of pre season. I don't think he will be starting GW1.
      2) An ACL tear is difficult to come back from (just look at Falcao), may take weeks or months for Mendy to become the player he was pre injury. Especially in such a demanding position as wing back, Pep will need to manage him back to peak fitness.
      3) Pep has Delph and Laporte who are also capable of playing Left back, rotation will happen.
      4) City have at least 2 players for every position now, so different formation combinations as well as rotation are possible. These may curtail Mendy from a wing back to a full back on occasion, for example.
      5) Pep did start with 3-5-2 last season, thats true. But the vast majority of the season used 4-1-4-1, and was very successful with it. One up front rotating between Aguero and Jesus also puts that position under less stress. Theres also the option that Pep emulates England (!) and plays Sterling as the second striker in a 3-5-2, alongside Jesus or Aguero.

Its something to follow over pre season to see what formation(s) Pep is favouring, its too early to say right now. But with Mendy and Walker likely to be unavailable for the start of the season, I'd expect the width in the team to be provided by the available Mahrez and Sane.

      1. Eden Wizard
        • 8 Years

In that case we'll not bother with any City 😆 Sorry but most of that is speculation, I agree with your points but these have always been the case under Pep, we're talking objectively here and thought i'd present some factual precedent as there's far too much doom & gloom speculation around here.

I can't see a world where Mendy doesn't start GW 1 after nearly a year out! He's been training full throttle for France and wouldn't have been picked if he wasn't ready...

          • 9 Years

Haha it is, but then so is your assertion on what formation Pep will play before even 1 pre season match has taken place 😉

I agree with you that Mendy is the best left back they have, and will be first choice when fit. I'm just saying that his full fitness may be a way off yet (due to coming back from the injury/ world cup). Only last week it was reported that Mendy suffered a muscular injury (common when returning from serious injury), and I think its telling that he was (and is) being kept out the French team by Hernandez.

However, City played their best football when they played a flat back 4 and a front 3 - i.e. Sterling, Aguero and Sane. As all of this happened after the Mendy injury - and that article from last November - it's quite possible that Pep could have changed his mind (not about playing Mendy of course, but about playing Aguero and Jesus together).

On the basis Mendy is their only proper left back then there is not much competition for him.

Pep just has too many options right now.

Not one player will start every game. But every attacking player (wing backs like Mendy included) might score big anytime. So if you want one, just get him, enjoy the point hauls and compensate the unavoidable rotation with a decent bench.

      Well,
      GK good.
DEF - I lack your faith on BOU defence but otherwise good.
MID - Salah as cap, sure. I'm holding off on Spuds and L'Arse GW1. Spuds have too many players to be rested post-WC and a new stadium to bed in. Arsenal can wait until GW3 due to fixtures.
STR - with 2 viable strikers your formation is restricted to 442/352, in which case you need a stronger 5th Mid or 5th Def, imo. Personally I'd be wanting to spend a little more to replace Daniels + 4m Def.

Isn't he below Wood in the pecking order? One of them will probably be more heavily used early doors in the Europa fixtures.

Wait and see if Burnley manage to sign Jay Rodriguez before the season starts, if so I'd say Barnes's place will be seriously under threat.

Wood looks like the go to man for Burnley. Definitely being overlooked with Arnie, Zaha & Tosun around.

Generally City players are eased in but i think he's the long term Dilva replacement

That's more likely to be Sterling imo.

Please explain the mechanics behind that (because you're wrong)?
Dilva - the #10 with incredible control, skill and precision.
Sterling - the wide forward, shocking control, no skill or precision.

Completely different positions on the pitch and player characteristics.....sorry

            I'm already wrong though 😆

I forgot that Sterling can't finish, has no no agility, can't dribble, can't pass, and is the worst footballer on the planet with no redeeming talents 🙄

I'm so glad you realised that 😆 City were really light in the deep playmaker position until Mahrez, he provides cover and a long term replacement!

KDB is the playmaker, Silva is the carrier. You know Sterling is the #10 for England? He has very quick feet, he can move the ball quickly and draw in opponents before releasing ball.

Pep needs a more natural finisher in the wide striker position imo, Mahrez's position.

What on earth is a "carrier"? Silva & KDB are the playmakers, fact.

Pep needs a finisher? Sane, Bilva, Sterling, Jesus, Aguero....Spoiled for strikers, Gundogan isn't competition for KDB or Silva.

Yup. Pep tends to make new players spend considerable time on the training ground to learn the Pep way before using them in top-level games, so I wouldn't want him in my initial squad.

Anyone else backing Wolves, West Ham and Southampton to do well this season? All three looking to strengthen the squad, I fancy alll three to finish top 10.
As such, might invest in some of their players. Could be great value to be found.

I'm happy to back Wolves from the get-go although their players aren't that cheap.
Southampton have burned me these last 2 seasons with their flatter-to-deceive cheap defenders and killer opening fixtures, so this time it's a no from me.
West Ham start with horrible fixtures so I'll stand back and monitor them for about the first 10 GWs. Fabs could come in early doors if he racks up save points again, and Arnie and Wilshere will be on my radar but I won't commit too hastily with either.
The 'lesser' club I expect to do quite well and has good-value players is Palace.

Palace could be a bargain market. Zaha in particular is one Im monitoring closely. What do you think of Townsend, though? Cheaper than Mili and Zaha.

Cheaper for a reason - doesn't do enough for me. Easy to get him in if he does surprise me though.

I'd be looking at, in order,
          Zaha
          Mili
          Tomkins

          then
          Gaita (new keeper at 4.5)
Wan-Bissaka (4m defender if he plays)
McArthur 5m for that 5th Mid spot.

Townsend is flying massively under the radar. Operated OOP as a FWD at the end of last season up top with Zaha, although still remains a midfielder nicely priced at 6.0m

However, I don't see Townsend and Zaha both starting as strikers again due to the return of Conor Wickham and hopeful re-invigoration of Benteke. As a result, I believe Townsend will revert to a natural wide role with the potential to be unleashed by Roy later in the game if required.

Personally I don't get the hype around promoted teams' players, despite some fancy stats in the championship, everyone knows the step up is a hard one and why go for someone like Jota/Sessegnon at 6.5m when you have Townsend (proven in the prem) available at 6m.

I may be biased but only not including Townsend as I have Zaha up front and doubling up on the unbeaten in 12 partnership that is Tomkins and Sakho (something I'm seeing very little of here on FFScout)

Remains to be seen who will nail down the RB spot, all the CPFC faithful are hopeful (as are FPL) AWB will with Ward as cover but will be monitoring pre-season for this one.

Milipen was great value at 5m! As already discussed in the article, I'm not sure I'm willing to go again with his price at 6.5m, especially with his tendency to pick up a yellow card.

Guita/Hennessey - CPFC have been looking for a keeper upgrade for a while, one would imagine that Guita will slot straight in as the #1 but I think it is too risky to just assume this after Hennessey had somewhat a strong end to last seasons campaign.

I guess I am, considering I have Fabianski, Douglas, Jota and Austin in my team.

West Ham and Southampton under-performed last season and should improve - not sure about top 10 finish though.

Of the three promoted sides, I like Wolves the best as they seem to have some genuine quality in their squad.
