Ben Foster could help Watford form part of an effective defensive rotation this season after his move from West Bromwich Albion.

The data would suggest he stands to bring improvements to the Hornets’ back-line, compared to previous number one Heurelho Gomes.

We’ve run the rule over Foster to see what his Fantasy Premier League prospects are this season.

THE HISTORY

Ben Foster finally called time on a six-year spell at West Bromwich Albion this summer after the Baggies were relegated from the Premier League. Having proved a fashionable asset for Fantasy football in recent years, his popularity was damaged last season by the struggles of his club, who finished bottom of the league.

However, the 123 FPL points Foster amassed in 2017/18 turned out to be the third-best score of his career. In fact, the ten clean sheets he helped keep was his second highest tally in the Premier League; only in 2014/15 did he register more shut-outs. The 101 saves he registered was also in keeping with expectations.

The main blot statistically on his final season with West Brom was the fact that he ranked bottom of the division for expected goals prevented, with -8.80.

Foster’s FPL pedigree goes back a long way, though. He first made a name for himself by making 178 saves and recording 153 Fantasy points in 2010/11 with Birmingham City.

Since then he has made over 100 saves in five of the last eight campaigns and was only below that number between 2013/14 and 2016/17 as he struggled with injury and team selection.

PROSPECTS

Foster certainly has what it takes to better Heurelho Gomes (£4.5m) in the Watford net and help the Hornets be a source of more clean sheets in 2018/19 than they were last season.

There is a decent foundation in place already at Vicarage Road as manager Javi Gracia targeted defence as an area in need of improvement after he took over from Marco Silva in January.

In the first 24 Gameweeks of 2017/18 Watford ranked 18th in the division for clean sheets and only Stoke City (50) had conceded more goals than them (44).

Between Gracia’s first match in Gameweek 25 and the end of the campaign the Hornets were ninth-best for clean sheets and 12th for goals conceded. In fact, only Man City (75) and Liverpool (97) allowed fewer shots on goal than Watford (130) over that same period.

They also ranked fifth-best for shots on target allowed (49) and seventh for big chances conceded (27).

If Watford begin 2018/19 in similar form then Foster is likely to perform better than Gomes.

The Brazilian only played one match under Gracia because of injury, but loanee Orestis Karnezis is no longer at the club and therefore unavailable for comparison.

Gomes’ spell in the team was under Silva, when Watford weren’t as assured at the back. Crucially, despite facing more shots on target per game last season, he still made fewer saves than Foster did per match.

The former West Brom man also out-performed Gomes for goals conceded per game as well as clean sheets too.

With that in mind, the hope is that Watford may be the source of more clean sheets in 2018/19 than they were last season.

The Hornets do have some tricky fixtures early on, with Tottenham and Manchester United among their first six matches.

However, Foster could be rotated with fellow £4.5m goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski to give managers this run over the first six Gameweeks: Brighton (H), Bournemouth (H), Crystal Palace (H), Wolves (H), Everton (A), Fulham (A).

    Any thoughts on this team?

    Foster - Fabianski
    VVD - Daniels - Cedric - Mee - Schelotto
    Salah - Mahrez - Jota - Walcott - Gunnarsson
    Aubameyang - Firmino - Tosun

Why VVD over Robertson? Just curious.

Differential. VVD somewhat trolled us last season so my logic is everyone will avoid him this season which certainly means he's going to score braces or something like that.

I think Mahrez could nail down as close to permanent a role on the right wing for City as you can manage in a Pep team. He's much more consistent than Sterling in getting past opponents who are sitting deep and he has much better finishing.

Sane should also get a good amount of game time, however I'm going to go with the slightly cheaper option of Mahrez.

It's a bit like the Mane vs. Salah option of last season. I think the new recruit who's slightly cheaper will prove to be the best option.

You reckon he's gets in from the off? Could take him time to play the way Pep wants and be gradually integrated.

As nailed as you can get in a Pep team? So not nailed.

De Bruyne, Dilva, Bilva, Sane, Mahrez, Sterling, Jesus, Aguero.

That's 8 players who are going to take 5 attacking spots in the team.

Not saying Mahrez is a bad pick for the time being with Sterling still at the WC, but not a long term nailed pick

Tried to build a team with Salah, Sanchez, Auba and Aguero to see if it was possible

    Ederson
    Bailly Coleman Cedric Tomkins Peltier

    Think that's a yes.

      Why Sanchez?

      1. He's not a great pick (he was consistently not good last season fantasy-wise and costs a lot more than other good proven players.)

      2. He's even worse value when you're not capping him.

      3. Rest of team looks cheap.

I've posted below a team with just the other big three and even that is a stretch. Sanchez on top is too far.

Hello guys. I'm a long time lurker now paid-up member and I'd appreciate your critical eyes over this lot:

    Ederson
    Alonso - Coleman - Robertson - Bellerin
    Sane - Ramsey - Mane
    Firmino - Aguero - Zaha

    £4.0m (Stekelenburg) - £4.0m (Wan-Bissaka) - £4.5m (Masuaku) - £4.5m (Stephens)

Bench too weak? Enough captain options?

Cheers in advance for any comments

We have a similar team really:
      Ederson
      Alonso Coleman Robertson Bellerin
      Kenedy Silva Sane Salah
      Zaha Aubameyang

I would say try and get Salah but if your happy with Firmino and Mane as your cover then go for it as your team is well balanced

Salah + Aguero + Aubameyang - is it viable? 4-4-2

    Ederson, 4.0
    Robertson, Lovren, Sokratis, Bailly, Peltier
    Salah, Ramsey, Willian/Siggy/Martial, Deulofeu, 4.5
    Aguero, Aubameyang, Kamara

      Nice team.

I am debating a 3-4-3 with Auba, Bobby Grins, and Wood vs a 4-4-2 with Auba, Kun, and 4.5 forward.

Having trouble convincing myself that Kun will outscore Bob by sufficiently wide margin over the course of the season to justify the extra 2.0.

Kun can be absolutely deady in spurts, but even if he hangs a 220 (near his best) and Bob produces another 180 (as he has last two campaigns), I feel like it will have been better to save the 2.0.

At £5.0m if I was going for him I would most likely be committing to him all in, without rotation. Strong early fixtures give him a good shot at a fast start and he'll rack up saves over the course of the season too you'd think.

Rotates nicely with Cairney if you are willing to go with two 5.0 mids.

I suppose if you count Arsenal at home as a good fixture... 🙂

CRY *cdf BUR bha ARS WAT *LEI ARS *BHA

You'd be lucky if your 5.0 mids were in prime form for Arsenal. And Kenedy would only play 2 games in the first 8 in that rotation, by which time you may have moved on from at least one of these mids. And one of those games, he plays Leicester, so it's not an obvious game for returns. The third game would cover Cairney's against Cardiff away, so it doesn't really need covering. And he's only be needed once in the first 5 games. His other fixtures are so poot that you woudn't want him a s a first sub, with all the other value options around.

I'm sorry to say, it's a no from me. 😀

Think he's a great option. Would pick him ahead of the other options at his price range - but personally think there's more value elsewhere. I've got Salah as a permacap, so the rest of my team is all about finding value, and I think the likes of Ramsey, Willian, Mkhi, maybe even Martial or Siggy could offer this

For me there are two reasons.

      1. World Cup hangover. For the first 2-3 game weeks Spurs will have to put out a second-string side. Even if Eriksen starts, he's not going to have Kane up top, or Alli, or Son.

      2. All their early games are away as their stadium isn't ready yet, then when they do move in it takes time to bed into a new stadium.

I therefore think Spurs will get off to a very shaky start to the season, so I'm avoiding all Spurs assets early doors.

He's not a player I would associate with geggenpressing. Can't really see how he fits in. One for the Pool bench imo.

    Thoughts on this?

Gives me all the players I wanted ... missing out on Zaha and Firmino but I think the amount of heavy hitters should work out ....

    —————Ederson——————
    Robertson Bailly Coleman Cedric
    Salah Alexis Silva Walcott Deulofeu
    ——————Aguero——————

    Stekelen Sorloith Kamara Tomkins

Fairly similar team to mine below, I really like it.

Think Sanchez will start off fast out of the blocks considering he may well play as a lone striker!

I really don't like Sanchez as an option but if you're sure, I'd get Tosun over Walcott for the sake of flexibility. Much easier to bring in the likes of Zaha, Arnie, Wood, King, Austin etc. if they do well

Please could I get some feedback on my team?

    Ederson
    Otamendi PvA Coleman Douglas
    Salah Sanchez Mahrez Jota Cairney
    Aguero
(Bench consists of: 4.0 GK, 4.0 DEF and two 4.5 forwards who may/may not contribute a point per game).

Plan is to save 2 free transfers, and then sub out Otamendi (to fix having four City players!) for whichever 4.0/4.5 defender establishes themselves as nailed in a good team, and spend the extra 2.5/2.0 on upgrading a forward to 7.0/6.5 to allow formation flexibility.

Triple City attack seems so obvious .... but is everyone doing it?

Too much time to tinker and boredom means you don't do the obvious thing.

      Indeed.

If they were to price him reflective of his status at Newcastle though, he'd come in at 5.0 or even 4.5m.

In all likelihood, he'll secure a transfer to Fulham over the coming weeks, and will be worth more in the 6.5-6.0 range.

It'd be unbalanced if they priced him now at 5.0, because he'd be in quite literally everybody's teams if he transferred to Fulham. 5.0 for a striker who'll play 90 minutes each game.

      1. HALFSPACE

Reckon 5.5 now would be fair. 6.5 a stretch ffs

I dunno, could quite easily have as much of an impact as Murray / Wood / Benteke based on his performances at Fulham last season. I'd say 6.0 would be a fair price for him at Fulham. 5.0 at Newcastle.

I quite like the way they do that. It means there aren't too many seriously underpriced players which makes decisions even more key.

That being said some of the defensive prices (especially Liverpool) are a little weird.

Nothing in writing per say, more common consensus. These chaps finished their PL seasons in May, and were playing in the WC by mid-June. They're just about to finish now in mid-July and the season starts in 3 weeks!

Fellas need a rest otherwise they'll burn out for the season.

I don't know Andy. I quite liked him going into last year but he emerged into another Redmond-type; converter winger who doesn't have the quality to become a 10 goal second-striker. Look at his xG map and you can see what I mean, high raw number but load of low % shots scattered about.
