Moving Target

Ben Foster could help Watford form part of an effective defensive rotation this season after his move from West Bromwich Albion.

The data would suggest he stands to bring improvements to the Hornets’ back-line, compared to previous number one Heurelho Gomes.

We’ve run the rule over Foster to see what his Fantasy Premier League prospects are this season.

THE HISTORY

Ben Foster finally called time on a six-year spell at West Bromwich Albion this summer after the Baggies were relegated from the Premier League. Having proved a fashionable asset for Fantasy football in recent years, his popularity was damaged last season by the struggles of his club, who finished bottom of the league.

However, the 123 FPL points Foster amassed in 2017/18 turned out to be the third-best score of his career. In fact, the ten clean sheets he helped keep was his second highest tally in the Premier League; only in 2014/15 did he register more shut-outs. The 101 saves he registered was also in keeping with expectations.

The main blot statistically on his final season with West Brom was the fact that he ranked bottom of the division for expected goals prevented, with -8.80.

Foster’s FPL pedigree goes back a long way, though. He first made a name for himself by making 178 saves and recording 153 Fantasy points in 2010/11 with Birmingham City.

Since then he has made over 100 saves in five of the last eight campaigns and was only below that number between 2013/14 and 2016/17 as he struggled with injury and team selection.

PROSPECTS

Foster certainly has what it takes to better Heurelho Gomes (£4.5m) in the Watford net and help the Hornets be a source of more clean sheets in 2018/19 than they were last season.

There is a decent foundation in place already at Vicarage Road as manager Javi Gracia targeted defence as an area in need of improvement after he took over from Marco Silva in January.

In the first 24 Gameweeks of 2017/18 Watford ranked 18th in the division for clean sheets and only Stoke City (50) had conceded more goals than them (44).

Between Gracia’s first match in Gameweek 25 and the end of the campaign the Hornets were ninth-best for clean sheets and 12th for goals conceded. In fact, only Man City (75) and Liverpool (97) allowed fewer shots on goal than Watford (130) over that same period.

They also ranked fifth-best for shots on target allowed (49) and seventh for big chances conceded (27).

If Watford begin 2018/19 in similar form then Foster is likely to perform better than Gomes.

Gomes

The Brazilian only played one match under Gracia because of injury, but loanee Orestis Karnezis is no longer at the club and therefore unavailable for comparison.

Gomes’ spell in the team was under Silva, when Watford weren’t as assured at the back. Crucially, despite facing more shots on target per game last season, he still made fewer saves than Foster did per match.

The former West Brom man also out-performed Gomes for goals conceded per game as well as clean sheets too.

With that in mind, the hope is that Watford may be the source of more clean sheets in 2018/19 than they were last season.

The Hornets do have some tricky fixtures early on, with Tottenham and Manchester United among their first six matches.

However, Foster could be rotated with fellow £4.5m goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski to give managers this run over the first six Gameweeks: Brighton (H), Bournemouth (H), Crystal Palace (H), Wolves (H), Everton (A), Fulham (A).

Assuming most of the players play can I roll with this team?

    Lloris
    Trippier(!) Maguire Pavard Kompany
    Modric Pogba Lingard
    Lukaku Kane Griezmann

    Fodder Varane Rakitic fodder

I think I'll only need a Trippier replacement.

    Any other suggestions?

    Thanks.

If you have transfers left then i’d make sure that your 2 fodders are cheapos playing today - maybe Mignolet & RLC but check teams before deadline?

Not a fan of Daniels/Bournemouth defence and suspect Cairney is a bit overrated here.

So would have to be B. But Tomkins 4.5 and Hughes 5.0 a better alternative.

some small changes made after couple of days digging 🙂
    Thoughts?

    Fabianski - Speroni
    Robertson - Baines - Douglas - Sakho - 4.0
    Salah - Pogba - Jota - Deulofeu - Gray
    Aguero - Firmino - Zaha

I think Pogba could be a good shout for 8.0 with Fred around and him (hopefully) coming back as a World Cup winner - huge booster
I am sticking with my Gray punt - I still love it 😉
Douglas used to play in my home town club - Lech Poznan in Poland - and he’s been amazing, great memories

Almost certainly. But we need to think through our strategies. Do we go for maxing out in GW1 and using an early wild card, or do we go with viable benches and play it steady with transfers until we evolve the squad we want?

For 5m I think more people are excited by Douglas. If Midfield, Jota is more popular (tho expensive). Oddly there's rather a lot of casual/autopick love for Neves at 5m - Costa ought to be a better pick than him.

Pedro is the one I'm not too sure on. My thinking is he'll play ahead of Willian (because of the World Cup and potentially leaving). No other 6.5 midfielders particularly stand out to me.

    Ederson (4.0)
    Coleman Bailly Azpi Robertson (Peltier)

Thay all can be easy replaced or minues to managed imo.
Martial, Sanchez, plenty of defs too.

The risk is too high to pick any of them FPL wise.
Also a risk for ManU for an injury or simply to get 100% quality so don't think they will be rush and play 90 since gw1 imo.

Not seen Son in any teams. Chances he plays up front while Kane misses first few? And he is decent with Kane anyway.

With all the attacking Spurs players (except Eriksen) wc resting and Son @ Asian Games,is anyone thinking to dare and take a punt with Moura or Llorente?

Best to avoid Spurs for the first 7-8 gameweeks. Changing stadiums, 5 away fixtures and players returning late from the World Cup.

I’ll look at the them once they are settled.

      Lamela better option

Llorente will be sold and wouldnt start even if he stayed. Lamela, Lucas and Eriksen are the options I’d be looking at from Spurs, but mainly Lucas and Lamela.

What are the expected teams for the third place playoff? Are the likes of Lingard, Kane, Courtois and Lukaku all set to play?

I imagine the teams will be the reserves. Can't see Kane playing because he looked unfit in the last couple of games.

Is anybody going for Aguero? Jesus will surely be rested and that leaves just Aguero up front (unless he plays false 9). Those fixures are so tempting......

Lots of people are. I'm not because with Salah as my perma-captain I prefer to spread the rest of my money more thinly.

Aguero nailed as my lonely striker in a 541 to start with.

      Yeh, it's a pretty standard 343 template. it's fine.

I like this! Very tempting to get Auba, Aguero, and Salah all in together!

Best 5.5 defender other than PVA?

One of the Arsenal options? Maguire? Jones?

    Thoughts on this latest draft:-

    Fab
    Sakho PVA Coleman
    Salah Lingard Walcott Doucoure
    Firmino Kane Tosun

    Hamer Stephens Dummett Yedlin

Lingard will probably miss the start of the season, maybe Kane too, and it's August!

Yes I wondered about Lingard. Not so sure about Kane given their limited options up top though.

I think Kane will miss the start of the season too. He also has a terrible record in August and it won't be helped with Spurs' stadium situation!

    How's it looking?
    Fill the blanks

    Ederson, Sper
    Robertson, ???, Ward, ???, Bed
    Neves, Salah, Sane, Masu, ???
    Zaha, Firmino, Ageuro

    A Smalling, Cedric, Redmond
    B Bailly, Cedric, Gudmon
    C Bailly, Redmond, 5.0?

Isn’t Neves quite defensive in midfield?

Correct, he's a DM that scores the odd stunner. Lovely little player but prob overrated as an FPL option.
