Belgium’s World Cup Fantasy options rewarded their owners with a parting gift in their last match of the tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Those invested in England were left disappointed though, as they were unable to register any returns.

We’ve got all the goals and assists and Fantasy talking points from the World Cup third/fourth place play-off.

BELGIUM 2-0 ENGLAND

TOP-SCORING PLAYERS:

  • Thomas Meunier (£6.0m) – 12 points
  • Thibaut Courtois (£6.0m) – 7 points
  • Eden Hazard (£10.1m) – 6 points
  • Jan Vertonghen (£5.9m) – 6 points
  • Vincent Kompany (£5.7m) – 6 points
  • Toby Alderweireld (£5.8m) – 6 points
  • Kevin De Bruyne (£9.8m) – 5 points
  • Nacer Chadli (£6.9m) – 4 points

Thomas Meunier (£6.0m) was the top-scorer as Belgium beat England in the World Cup third/fourth place play-off.

The wing-back finally rewarded his 10.7 percent ownership with his first and final goal of the tournament, after showing promise both in qualifying and the earlier stages in Russia.

He even had a chance to add another strike in the second-half as his drive from the right was saved spectacularly by Jordan Pickford (£5.5m).

On top of his fourth-minute goal, assisted by Nacer Chadli (£6.9m), Meunier kept the clean sheet too. His defensive colleagues, Thibaut Courtois (£6.0m), Jan Vertonghen (£5.9m), Vincent Kompany (£5.7m) and Toby Alderweireld (£5.8m) also banked points for the shut-out.

England came into the tie a little more in the second-half with Harry Kane (£11.2m), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£5.7m) and Eric Dier (£5.7m) the most dangerous.

Owners of Romelu Lukaku (£10.0m) were initially disappointed by his withdrawal in the 59th minute but he was eventually awarded two points for playing 60th minutes by McDonald’s FIFA World Cup Fantasy.

Belgium finally put the game beyond England late in the second-half, catching them on the break. Kevin De Bruyne (£9.8m) was allowed too much space to thread Eden Hazard (£10.1m) through to slot home.

BELGIUM XI (3-4-2-1): Courtois; Vertonghen, Kompany, Alderweireld; Chadli (Vermaelen 39’), Witsel, Tielemans (Dembele 78’), Meunier; Hazard, De Bruyne; Lukaku (Mertens 60’).

ENGLAND XI (3-1-4-2): Pickford; Maguire, Stones, Jones; Dier; Rose (Lingard 45’), Delph, Loftus-Cheek (Alli 84’), Trippier; Sterling (Rashford 45’), Kane.

Somewhere to chat captaincy stick or twist:

How has your captain done so far this Round?

Are you unsure whether to stick or twist? What are your options?

With only two days of play in the final round, what substitutions do you have planned - any dilemmas?

Please post your questions here and share your thoughts on FWC strategy for the Final of the 2018 World Cup.

Hazard (C) has me with 12 thus far.

Would you twist to: Mbappe, Varane, Hernandez or Modric?

Seen as i captained Lukaku i will be twisting for sure and unless anyone captained Meunier i would advise them to do the same.

Meunier captains (or owners playing max cap) will make great strides this round.
A lot depends on your situation re twisting cap. With only 2 rounds it's much easier to go backwards than earlier in the tournament. Griezmann > Kane last round for example.

      Lukaku blank.

Everything depends on my 4 man French defense. Griezmann captain.

Playing max captain so looks like Meunier points coming my way! Subbed in Lloris Rakitic and Varane for Maguire Pickford and Kane ( 3 points between them)

No captaincy dilemmas for me, Max Cap chip active!

Returns for (provisional captain) Hazard, KDB and new recruit Chadli today. 3pter from Tielemans the (4.0 > Pickford 🙁 ) enabler. England squad members (Kane, Maguire, Trippier and Pickford) will all drop to the bench barring any injuries to my French and Croatian contingents.

Biggest mistake today was not following my gut with a Belgian cleanie...Trippier recovery had lots to do with that, meaning I shed Kompany rather than Tripps, and acquired Pickers rather than Courtois. No space for Meunier either way though.

Still to play: Griezmann, Pavard, Lloris, Modric, Lovren and new recruits Matuidi and Hernandez.

Good luck tmrw all, may your rank increases be plentiful and delicious 🙂

Tough one for me. Leading by 10points and think he will cap Griezman. He has France back 4 so a clean sheet he would overtake me. May have to captain my differentials Mpabbe/Matuidi and hope for no clean sheet! Thoughts?

Blown my Max Cap chip in round 3 so it's a switch to Mbappe today. Meunier and Vertonghen sorted me out nicely yesterday though! Back up to 17k. All England players out and a full bench of final players in...

Personally I’d be hesitant on Auba for price reasons & would go Laca if you really want double arsenal attack, or down even further to Arnie, Tosun, King, Wood or Austin...

Then would use the savings to upgrade Silva (Mahrez, Sané, or KDB) Jota (Mili, Theo, Siggy, Ramsey)

But it’s a nice team for aure

Tbh I'm not a fan of dbl arsenal, but mkhi is the best in the price range imo and I feel I need to fill a heavy hitters role in case one of them starts firing early on. Thanks for analysing it though I will tinker using your ideas.

I think there is plenty of potential in the 5-5.5 range. And some interesting options at 6.5.

Choosing which ones is the difficult bit.

Current favourites I'm watching over pre-season are:

      4.5 - Chalobah
      5 - Costa, Hughes, Cairney
      5.5 - Deufelou, Lookman
      6.5 - Jota, Sess, Walcott

If it's changed then Yer Mbop has an assist.

He's certainly been excellent during the latter stages. Personally I've found Griezmann's workrate and pivotal role across the pitch for France fractionally more impressive. But it'll be hard to ignore the excellent performances of Modric and co if they do come through in the end.

Golden Boot isn't an award given because someone deserved it. It's given to whoever scores the most goals.

But he isn't deserving of any award because he hasn't scored one legit goal since Tunisia and he's been poor in the tournament.

Less touches than any other starter in todays game. About 25 touches total. No goal in over 5 hours of play (the important games) His Hat-trick against probably the worst team in the competition.

he hasnt had a great world cup, but all of his penalties were 10/10 (including his bonus penalty in the shootout).

his 2 headers were great agains tunisia

that accident goal vs panama was complete luck

plus a couple of those penalties, he actually won them himself.

he deserves golden boot, of course.

maybe sane's confidence has been blown, maybe he thinks he's a failure because he can't even make the germany team who didn't even get past the group stages of the world cup, so that means he's really really terrible, and his teammates are making fun of him because of it and he really doesn't think he can continue.

Both good options at their prices - I guess Austin's injury record is probably the key difference.

Am always reticent in investing in smaller teams who are in Europe though. Increases the chance of fatigue and/or rotation.

      I'm going Aubameyang.

I want him long-term and would rather avoid using a transfer switching him from Aguero in gw3 for his fixtures.

City will be depleted and Chelsea in transition - he is capable of scoring against them.

Will have had a rest and a full pre-season, is nailed and has pedigree.

Fulham fan here. Sess tends to come from wide into the box quite late to score goals, linked up quite well with Mitrovic quite well so look out for that when Mitrovic signs. He needed to strengthen up physically last season but to be fair today he looks like he has done that. I think because how young he is I think the more experienced rb’s will suss him out. I feel 6.5 is a bit too much for him. Jota I would say could be used as a second striker playing off the striker so I feel he will get more in the game then sess.

“We cannot start the Premier League with our players that were in the World Cup, which is a shame for the most important club competition in Europe,” Mourinho told RT in his exclusive role as a guest pundit.
be, ‘OK I have you for the first match of the season but maybe I don’t have you in three of four months.’

“Three weeks [off], which I think is the minimum that their body and soul needs, and which is the minimum for the them to return and think about football again,” Mourinho said in answer to how long the players would get as a break.

“I think three weeks is the minimum they need, which means that they’re going to be back in the week when the Premier League starts, which means they’re not ready to start the Premier League, which is I think difficult to understand, where we could have one more week to prepare everybody.”

    Apparent update on Haz situation:

Eden Hazard's agent has been in contact with Real Madrid for 4-5 weeks. Conversations started before the World Cup.

Hazard wants the move, Real Madrid are desperate to land him and Chelsea are willing to sell, despite what you'll hear in the media about their desire to keep him.

The most important detail is that Hazard has never been eyed as a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo - he was originally meant to replace Gareth Bale, who has held talks with Man Utd.

If Hazard joins, he will be one of TWO huge additions. The other will be an out and out striker.

Im also fairly in the know basis regarding all things concerning Madrid (which is why I primarily post about them regarding the transfer activity) as I have some friends that are fairly close to the club and this information coincides with what they've been saying for the past weeks.

Hey bro, not sure if you’ll still be looking at this but... team looks good apart from Son. He is having time off to play the Asian games for first month of season.

Also Jota and sess both being 6.5 and playing on promoted teams is a big risk. You never know how form will translate up into the EPL. One is fine but for the other I would go cheaper or get a proven prem option.

Other than that personally I prefer premium defenders but that’s everyone’s choice.

    Better option?

    A) Auba/Kun & 5.5 mid
    B) Firmino & Ramsey

I expect big things from Aubameyang - but I guess the answer is reliant on finding a midfielder who presents value at 5.5.

If Lookman becomes a regular starter I would choose him over Deulofeu. Otherwise one of the Wolves midfielders might present value.

I don't know if I've getting closer or further away from my end product.

    Ederson/Boruc
Azpi, Robertson, Coleman, Van Dijk, Cedric
    Eriksen, Mhiki, Salah, Walcott, Mili
    Tosun, Wood, Quaner

That strikeforce needs more premium quality feel to it - defense far too expensive

So I should go with poorer quality defenders?

Everton appear to have played the worst team in the world today and won 22-0 but interesting that they went with a back four of Coleman, Holgate, Keane and Baines. Holgate could be the one to watch there at £4.5m.

For sure but given the limited budget at the start of the season and their fixtures, one to consider.

Just had a whatsapp from my friend. He was at Fulham v Reading at Aldershots ground.

Apparently Reading dominated in a 0-0. A Reading team that lost 4-2 last week to AFC Wimbledon.

Fulham could be ones to avoid. Or Reading might be getting promoted.

    Which is it ?

      Everton won 22-0 today

Neither. Reading are shite. Fulham have quite a few kids playing today and need to get on with signing new players as we only have a squad at the moment.

On your basis Liverpool are ones to avoid with them drawing 0-0 with bury.
