A host of French attacking players rounded off a successful World Cup final performance by rewarding their Fantasy managers one last time.

Owners of Antoine Griezmann, Kylian Mbappe and Paul Pogba were particularly grateful as the summer Fantasy game came to a close.

We’ve got all the goals, assists and talking points from the 2018 World Cup final.

FRANCE 4-2 CROATIA

TOP-SCORING PLAYERS:

  • Paul Pogba (£8.8m) – 7 points
  • Antoine Griezmann (£10.1m) – 6 points
  • Kylian Mbappe (£9.2m) – 6 points
  • Ivan Perisic (£8.5m) – 6 points
  • Mario Mandzukic (£8.9m) – 4 points
  • Domagoj Vida (£5.5m) – 3 points
  • Lucas Hernandez (£5.0m) – 3 points

Paul Pogba (£8.8m) got his first Fantasy returns of the World Cup in the most important match of all, and finished the final as the match’s top-scoring player, with seven points.

His goal was the third for France as they were crowned champions by blowing Croatia in a 4-2 win.

The first goal of the match was for the French, but it was Croatian striker Mario Mandzukic (£8.9m) who put it into the net. Antoine Griezmann’s (£10.1m) free-kick from deep got the final touch from the Juventus forward, taking away any possibility of attacking returns.

Ivan Perisic (£8.5m) popped up with his second goal in as many World Cup matches a few minutes later to level the tie. Domagoj Vida (£5.5m) flicked the ball onto him from inside the box, he took a touch away from the defender and then struck it back across goal into the far corner.

France were in front again in 38th minute, though. A lengthy VAR review saw Perisic punished for a handball in the penalty area, allowing Griezmann to get his goal from the spot and make it 2-1 at half-time.

Pogba’s goal came just shy of the hour-mark after a period of Croatian pressure. Griezmann teed him up on the edge of the box, his initial shot blocked before his secondary effort flew into the far corner of Danijel Subasic’s (£5.5m) net.

Just six minutes later Kylian Mbappe (£9.2m) became the first teenager to score in a World Cup final since Pele in 1958. The ball came into him from Lucas Hernandez (£5.0m) and his fancy footwork on the edge of the penalty area wrong-footed both Vida and Subasic, allowing him to blast home from distance.

Just as it looked as if the match was over as a contest, France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris (£5.9m) gifted a goal to Croatia, his attempts to dribble round Mandzukic foiled by a successful tackle from the striker. His touch was enough to send the ball into the net.

France held out for the result in the end to become the sixth team in history to win the World Cup twice.

Elsewhere, England striker Harry Kane (£11.2m) finished the tournament as the overall top-scoring player on World Cup Fantasy with 40 points. Griezmann was just behind him on 38, with Raphael Varane (£6.1m) registering 34.

Andreas Granqvist (£5.2m) proved the most valuable player coming in at 5.9 points per million, Benjamin Pavard (£4.6m) recording 5.8 and Varane 5.5.

FRANCE XI (4-2-3-1): Lloris; Hernandez, Umtiti, Varane, Pavard; Kante (N’Zonzi 55’), Pogba; Matuidi (Tolisso 73’), Griezmann, Mbappe; Giroud (Fekir 81’).

CROATIA XI (4-1-4-1): Subasic; Strinic (Pjaca 81’), Vida, Lovren, Vrsaljko; Brozovic; Perisic, Rakitic, Modric, Rebic (Kramaric 71’); Mandzukic.

Does Douglas have any competition for set pieces, and does he take pens, DFKs, IFKs, and corners?

How good is Jota really? On a scale of 0 to Adel Taarabt where would you rate his ability to step up to the premiership?

Taarabt came up from the champs one year having scored 19 goals from midfield and setup nearly as many. On FKs, pens, the whole works, and absolutely dive bombed in the premiership... could Jota be similar?

Neves also - is he underpriced at 5.0, like should he be a 5.5, or 6.0 or is he fairly negative as an FPL asset?

        Trying to spread the risk.

With Sanchez its all about Lukaku not being there and an easy conversion to KDB in a couple of gameweeks if required.

Lowton might become Douglas/ TAA - same theory as above!

It’s a good point about Sanchez, but as a KDB placeholder does Sané +0.5 not make more sense?

Seeing a good few folks banking on Sanchez, they could be well rewarded is he gets a haul v Leicester, he’ll probably have pens for that game also.

I’m currently planning a punt on martial for that game though 🙂

Both arguments fail at the "cover" level imo. Points are independent of the teams the players belong to. See this thread for my arguments if you wish, and feel free to argue otherwise 🙂

Suggest 4 defenders at 4.5 or 5.0 with guaranteed clean sheets every week? Need to take that gamble to get the attack going.

        Palace and Bourn rotate well
        Burnley has history
And might reconsider Leicester and change it to Southampton.
Plus all those apart from Morgan can contribute in the final third.
Not considering anyone from the newly promoted teams (Douglas being thrown around a lot)

Defence offers the best value in the game. I think your tactic is feasible but a bit foolhardy

        2. Deulofail
          • 9 Years
          7 years, 5 months ago

You don't need to take that gambel to get the attack going. There are plenty of attacking options cheaper than Sanchez, and they are defenders who can make up for any perceieved loss of attacking verve if you sold him. But it's not just attack that gets you points. 11 men in your team each week, and some of them could be high scoring defenders 😉

That said, I don't want to discourage you from doing something different (although somewhat traditional, just not fashionable this year). It's a valid tactic, but I'm not convinced due to how easy it is to build a good team without skimping in defence )

With Sterling and KdB unlikely to start GW1 he should be a starter though, but first to make way for the returning players ?

        Quote
“Next season, David maybe will not play every game, that's why the squad has to be big.

“He's played more due to his absence, more energy in the legs. the decisions are taken day by day and it is what it is.”

I've heard this theory a lot lately, but just thinking of Pep's other signings ... Walker went straight in last season, Mendy went straight in, Laporte played (if memory serves) about two weeks after he was *signed*, Ederson started the season ... I know it kinda 'feels logical', but does anyone have any counter-examples? Proven Premiership player in a depleted squad, playing in a position where the incumbent definitely needs a rest ... Hard to see him not playing, no?

Not so much new signings but if Pep needs certain aspects about a player to improve he will bide his time. Kun B Silva and Sane are fair examples I think. On top of this, I don't see Mahrez working a lot off the ball which is definite No No for Pep. His Saving grace is world cup absentees. A better player than Sterling though and he will be giving up game time for him.

Kun not only started Pep's first ever game at City, he also scored in it. Bilva clearly never first-choice anyway, and never played in the EPL before. Sane was ... 19? ... and also never played in the EPL before.None of this applies to Mahrez.

Fernandinho, Sane, D Silva, Gundogan, B Silva, Mahrez, Jesus, Aguero ... 6 from 8 and I can see Mahrez missing out in the first few game weeks (whilst he gets to grip with what Pep wants) to players that know the system

I think defenders fit in to Peps teams a bit easier than attackers - Walker and Mendy (injured first two games) didn’t really have much competition

But the phrase "Whilst he gets to grips with what Pep wants" is the thing that I don't get. I'm sure he'll learn along the way, but I can't find any similar examples where Pep has done this to a proven EPL player. Even with a full squad.

Sane, B Silva, Gundogan, Jesus we’re all eased in ...

With regard to Pep’s system ....
                    - Pep dropped Kun until he could do what Pep wanted regarding chasing down defenders

                    - Pep would not play Kun and Jesus together without an overlapping wing back (Delph at the time)

I can not see Mahrez fitting in that easily as a Man City player ( he won’t be the ‘star’) especially after his ‘spoon fed’ elite player status and counter attacking style at Leicester

I think it is because Kamara is Fulhams only striker on the game at the moment and Aguero is always subject to rotation which will be built into the algorithm.

Aguero plays Arsenal, and he's not 100% to start. Besides their scores are 0.26 apart, which is close but Aguero is still the clear favourite.

Kamara's projection will go down if Mitrovic is signed, but I could understand expecting Mitro at home to Palace to average similar to Aguero away to Arsenal. Especially when factoring in Arsenal's well rested first players compared to City's and the new manager effect.

How many potential captain options do you plan to enter GW1 with?

Salah, Kun, Siggy here are realistically the only ones i'd feel comfy captaining and the latter two at a push! Perma-Captaincy is an option which could dampen the appeal of multiple big hitters this season IMO.

Trippier was fantastic but Modric was a step above everyone. Probably didn't stick out as much because a lot of Trippier's work was crossing and set pieces so got noticed more. Modric took them to the final

I agree, Modric is a football genius and without him they would never have reached the final. Raktic is not bad either but he doesn't carry the team like Modric.

Varane deserves a mention. He was a giant for France.

        Yeo. Thats not easy.

Naaah. Think Mordic was the best. Worked hard in mid in every game. Perisic was quiet in few.
Mayby if Modric scored 2-3 goals/assist more he would be more obvious choice for many.
Didnt see any other player at that level in every game. Griezman? Mbappe? Dont think so.

Main guy who won this cup was Didier imo. Great tactic, great coach!

Kane was generally poor. No issue with him winning the golden boot at all but I don't think he played that well. Not by his standards. I'm quite surprised people here think he deserved golden ball. I love Harry but really??

Did think Modric played very well in most games. Got himself about, sprayed the ball well etc, but I'm not convinced he carried the team - the midfield 3 were all excellent.

Main reason I'd lean towards Mbappe is because he's the game changer. He won France the world cup imo - just his threat alone made opposition defences treat their whole attack differently.

Modric is the "football hipster's" choice, not sure how exactly to put it but it's guys who like to showcase they're football intellectuals and purists by praising central midfielders and defensive midfielders. Such people also like to call for stuff like Modric for the Ballon d'Or.

Whisper it quietly, but Modric wasn't even the best central midfielder at the World Cup - Pogba was. Pogba put in immense performances in every single one of the knockouts, and stepped it up when needed. But Pogba's flashy, loves himself a funky haircut and social media, and plays for the endless talent pool so he's not appreciated as much by the false intellectuals unlike Modric, who's understated, not as flashy and captains the plucky underdogs who almost pulled off a fairytale.

      Just my 2 cents.

        Wow, seriously?

Modric was player of the tournament because he dominated in so many games, not just with his passing and vision, but his work rate too.

That doesn't mean everyone else was pants. I also thought Pogba was outstanding, just in a different way. He showed a lot more positional discipline than I've given him credit for with Man U. Also, his volleyed pass to release Mbappe (for Pogba's goal) was sublime.

Modric wasn’t that great and neither were Croatia. It’s not Modric’s job to score but it’s his job to make his team play well and they didn’t. Had they been in the other side of the draw they would have been knocked out in the 2nd round. Barely beat Denmark and Russia.

Every chance he is the "mid" on the left hand side if that's the setup he wants.

I personally see it being more of a 343 with Kun up top and 2 attacking players behind to allow the wingback to push up.

Pep really talked him up last year, spent big money and he was on fire before the injury.

That's why I'm hoping I'm right. Him nailed as the left wing back with maybe the odd run out of Delph late I games of in cup matches/before big CL games.

Allows Mahrez/KdB/Sane/Sterling/Bilva/Kun/Jesus all to rotate as part of the 3. With Fernandinho/Gundogan/Dilva and whoever to rotate as the central 2.

Well like I said - no we won't since they won't be there. But we will likely have a better idea. Never said we would know.

But if we know the system we can at least make a more educated guess than we can now.

Not sure if you have something against Mendy or you're just trying to convince yourself you don't need him but you seem very adamant about it.

Are you as concerned about literally every other player in their squad not wearing goalie gloves?

Hmm I just think he is far from nailed and Ederson as City cover is much better imo as I prefer to spend 6 mil for Robbo who looks like nailed for me.
Have nothing against Mendy and if he will be nailed playing Alonso type than at my WC I will get Fabian in place of Ederson and go with Mendy.

I badly want him in from the start, but he's about to have a three-week holiday and then turns up to City a week before the first day. Maybe he's thrown stright in, maybe not. If he's not fit, Pep will find a solution. Hard to see him missing more than two weeks, isn't it? And GW1 he's probably not keeping a clean-sheet anyway. I might start with Laporte and keep 0.5 behind.

With the likes of Daniels, Cedric etc as good 4.5 mill bench fodder it won’t the the end of the world if Mendy does not start GW1 ... if you have been seduced by the 4.0 mill defenders (that aren’t nailed) then you may be dissapointed 😉

There is the suggestion tonight from several sources that during the on-pitch trophy celebrations, Steven N'Zonzi had to ask certain players to let N'Golo Kanté hold the World Cup trophy because the man himself was too shy to ask & didn't want to impose on anyone. What a hero.

We've seen with Sané and Bilva that new recruits take time to settle with Pep's tactics. But what goes in favour of Mahrez is that he's already training with the team while all the others that featured in the WC will be back late.

Sane was a kid and Bilva is a squad-player. Neither had played in the EPL before. All other Pep signings went straight into the team. I'm not saying he's gonna hit the floor running, but the arguments suggesting Pep will ease him in, with a depleted squad, seem basesless. I'm only banging on about it because it's exactly the kind of thing that gets repeated so often here that it ends up being fact. And then he starts the first two, three weeks and everyone has a meltdown.

United trying to flog Martial I understand. If he moves somewhere where he's going to get the game time then could be a good option. Keep an eye on whether Emery prefers Monreal for the LB spot if Kolasinac is going to get it then I will probably join you, if not you could be left with egg on your face having him as your 'premium'

    Fabianski 4.0
    Robertson Douglas Tomkins Cedric 4.0

I'm thinking another keeper to cover Fab's fixtures? Or just get a premium keeper in?
