We are delighted to announce there is just one week left until the official launch of Fantasy Football book ‘Wasting Your Wildcard‘.

Written by regular site contributor David Wardale and fully endorsed by Fantasy Football Scout, it will be released on Thursday July 26, to plug the painful gap between the end of the World Cup and start of the 2018/19 Premier League season.

Subtitled ‘The Method and Madness of Fantasy Football’, the book is being published by Penguin’s respected sports imprint, Yellow Jersey Press, and is packed with hints and tips from some of the best Fantasy managers out there.

But it is as much about the people as the game, with stories of glory and despair, mini-league skulduggery and humiliating failure and the strange grip the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in particular has on managers from Australia to Zimbabwe and just about everywhere in between.

There are in-depth interviews with FPL champions and Fantasy-mad Saudi princes, a comprehensive look at the eternal conflict that is stats versus ‘the eye test’ and chapters on the history of the game, the all-conquering beast that is Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and what the future of Fantasy Football might look like.

There’s also a revealing section on our very own Mark, detailing the methods behind his successful approach to playing FPL.

Written by a fan for the fans, we think Wasting Your Wildcard will inform and entertain in equal measure, while grappling with the reasons behind why we, as supposedly grown-up men and women, cannot resist playing a game of footballing dress-up.

And to give you a taste of what you can expect, we’re planning to publish an exclusive extract for newsletter subscribers in the very near future.

    Question.

In the 2015/16 season, I lucked out, selected Mahrez for dirt-cheap, and hauled in all his points. In the 2017/2018 season, I did the same for Salah. My question is this, who is this season's player that is going to come out of (basically) nowhere and provide a points haul far beyond anyone's expectations (especially at their opening price)?

Of course, the answer to this question might be most FPL players most closely guarded secret, but I thought it might be interesting to see who people think might be the next big fantasy thing that no one is really expecting.

    Thanks!

I've got no doubts that he's going to pull in big points, but given his price, they aren't going to be close to the value that they had for me when I bought him at 9 mil from the start.

It's always that issue with newly promoted teams, though, and whether or not they can perform at the next level. That said, at 6.5, he might be good value...maybe just not great value like the others.

I have a feeling it maybe Mikhi...
If he can stay fit and get a decent run in the team, he could be gold. He showed it in glimpses last season, but in an Arsenal team with a new manager and no CL he’s a steal at 7 mil...

I've got Mkhi at the moment as well, and I think he could be really good value. Maybe even great value. But I also figure that there's going to be a lot of people that spy that one early.

Question about Mahrez. How is City going to even fit him in the squad? Who gets dropped?

From the beginning they drop Sterling after the world cup. I think Mahrez is a better player anyway so he might make the RW position his own, however most likely is that both Sane, Sterling, Mahrez and Bilva gets at least 20+ matches during the season and that form will dictate who gets 40+.

Not a great confidence booster for picking any of those players. And that's the other game, who is going to be an absolutely locked-on starter? I think I remember that there were some questions about Salah, but then rotation really became a non-issue. But if you don't know week-to-week (which seems to be Pep's grand plan), I don't really know if I can't get fully behind any of them.

Pep did settle on a team last year. When Sterling hit form he started about 90% of the matches. But with an expected 60 games if they progress in the cups and CL, rotation is inevitable. For me, starting with Mahrez seems wise and perhaps Sane as well seeing as they are rested while the rest played WC.

Keita has potential to do well. Pool relied on the front 3 for a lot of their goals last season. With Keita Klopp looks like he is trying to add some x-factor from midfield.

Just got done watching some highlights of James Maddison. Looks pretty good. In fact, that midfield group at 6.5 could be really interesting to watch: Milivojevic, Walcott, Sessegnon, Maddison, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Elyounoussi, Richarlison, Jota, and even Lazini. Very interesting...

    A. Bonatini

Sorloth if you want a decent chance at 2+ returns. Quaner if you just want 1 or 2 point returns.

In relation to the others, Kamara wont play once Mitrovic signs and Long is third choice at Southampton (know this as I'm Irish) behind Austin and Gabbiadini.

So I would say Sorloth is probably your best option right now (plus he has looked good so far in pre season). Watched him a lot when I lived in Denmark for two years, he can be a handful with his size and decent feet considering his size. Would best describe him as a slightly more technical Norwegian Crouch.

How about Foster, Tomkins and Hughes to Stekelenburg, PVA and Stephens, then play 4-3-3?

If you go for Pickford, then there seems little value in having another playing keeper. PVA could achieve a lot more than Hughes I reckon.

Haven't posted my team for a few days on here, let me know what you think

    4-3-3

    DDG - 4.0
Mendy - Robertson - PvA - Cedric/Diop rotate for the 4th defender spot
    Salah - Mahrez - Ramsey - 5.0 - Stephens
    Auba - Tosun - King

any suggestions for the 5.0 would be welcome, unlikely to start many games but may be useful to have a 5.0 rather than 2x 4.5 midfield fodders early on.

Not very good. They’ll probably get relegated. I just like their first 3 games and he could be the differential to own amongst the 5m mids. At this price I’m anyways not expecting much and he’ll be rotated with 4th def.

The collective thought on here has very little impact on price changes. And logic/common sense will not stop the masses buying Calum Wilson when he scores 2 vs Cardiff.

Been looking at the ownership of the WC potential absentees (Lukaku, KDB, Maguire etc) and signs point to people getting panicked by their gw1 absence and bandwagoning whoever scores big then reverting to the WC absentees when they work themselves into relevance.

The 1st gws are going to be volatile

Anyone going for 4-3-3? Not the most popular formation but with the budget strikers we have this season, it could be viable..

    Robertson. Coleman. PVA. Douglas/BUR.
    Salah(c). Eriksen. Mahrez.

    4.0. Costa. Stephens. Bennett.

We don't know how they will play yet, not even which formation. Gotta wait for more friendlies. Both can play CF, both can play on the flank. But Auba is the superior goalscorer which is reflected in the price.

If you're going to get Kane no matter what. May as well bank it so you can do it in GW2 or 3 in one move. If you're likely to wait till GW4, then you could get Silva or Mendy.

I think people are too fearful of going without Salah tbh, we are talking about our gw1 teams here and not our gw30 2nd WCs! Even if he does haul in gw1, ofc it may hurt a bit but who's not to say that money can't reap greater rewards spread elsewhere? Also can easily catch up any loss in the following gws!

I think the issue with no Salah teams is that in half of them I’m just not seeing where these “additional funds” have even gone.

Secondly, the lack of captaincy options of some of these non Salah teams is also puzzling. Some I see only have Aguero as their main captaincy option, unless they feel comfortable captaining Firmino/mane.

      1. Deulofail

Everyone has 100m to spend, so it doesn't really matter if you can percieve where the money has been spent tbh. 😉 If the chosen players are all good value, why is "No Salah" anything but an attempt to dismiss the discussion of someone's team or ideas?
