Great Expectations

Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) has the potential to be the go-to Manchester City defensive option in 2018/19 after his comeback from long-term injury.

The Frenchman was ruled out for most of last season after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee in Gameweek 6, but is fit and ready to go for the new campaign, at a cheaper price than colleagues Nicolas Otamendi (£6.5m) and Kyle Walker (£6.5m).

We’ve gone over the data to find out whether Fantasy Premier League managers can expect to see the Mendy who registered eight assists in 25 league matches and seven Champions League appearances prior to signing for Man City.

CREATIVE GENIUS

Mendy’s start to the 2017/18 demonstrated his huge creative potential. In the first five Gameweeks of last season, before his Gameweek 6 injury, only Premier League four defenders created more chances than the Frenchman, all of them with more starts under their belt in that period. The Frenchman fashioned seven opportunities in 270 minutes, Jose Holebas (£4.5m) eight in 360, Aaron Cresswell (£5.5m) nine in 369, Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.0m) nine in 269 and Ben Davies (£6.0m) 13 in 350.

In fact, only three Man City players created more than Mendy, David Silva (£8.5m) with 17 chances in five starts, Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) with 15 in five and Sergio Aguero (£11.0) with 12 in four. And despite making just seven appearances in the entire campaign, just De Bruyne and Leroy Sané (£9.5m) registered more successful crosses from open play than Mendy’s eight, with 14 and nine respectively.

Adding a further three appearances after a Gameweek 34 return, Mendy created nine chances and had five shots on goal in 361 minutes across the season as a whole. That averaged out at a key pass every 40.1 minutes, the next best in the City defence was Walker with one every 92.9. Furthermore, his shot every 72.2 minutes was the second-best in the City defence, with Danilo’s (£5.5m) 70.6 coming out on top.

DEFENSIVE RETURNS

On top of Mendy’s impressive creative potential is his ability to keep a healthy number of clean sheets. No side conceded fewer goals than Man City’s 27 last season and only Manchester United recorded more clean sheets, their total of 19 just one better than the Citizens’ 18.

Pep Guardiola’s champions sit top of our season ticker for defence in the opening six Gameweeks so shutouts should be expected. After a tricky trip to Arsenal in Gameweek 1, Huddersfield, Newcastle and Fulham are all set to visit the Etihad Stadium with trips to Wolves and Cardiff in Gameweeks 3 and 6 respectively.

ON THE MENDY

Mendy will be ahead in his pre-season development compared to everybody else. Even though he only registered 40 minutes in Russia, the training he did there with France was effectively his pre-season and because he missed so much time with the injury, his body and mind should be in a position to head back to training with his club and then competitive action without feeling burned out.

ROTATION FREE (FOR NOW)

Mendy was brought to Man City last season to be the first-choice left-back and the Frenchman looks set to make that position his own, especially in the early weeks of 2018/19. The late returns to training of Danilo and Fabian Delph (£5.5m) means that the only cover for the left of defence will be Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.0m), who may not be at the club anymore by Gameweek 1 with transfer reports linking him elsewhere. Those factors should ensure very little rotation on Mendy’s part to begin with, as he is already with the main training group in the USA.

I would be 75% sure it's Hennessy but they have signed a new keeper, definitely the worst team for keepers in the league imo

Hennessey made a clanger in pre-season leading to a goal which could impact Roy's decision ...

I don't think Guita was brought in to sit on the bench but then neither did Mandanda ...

All in all, it would be the most palace thing ever to bring in another quality GK and for him to sit on the bench but Guita's form for Getafe FC last season and with our defenders confidence in Hennessey visibly low, I expect Guita to start over Hennessey.

      Still a risk though IMO

    Yet more tinkering!!

    Ederson (Speroni)
    Robertson Mendy Daniels (Cedric Peltier)
    Salah Lamela Pedro Mkhitaryan Jota
    Aguero Firmino (Kamara)

worried about no Sane, ARS MAN defenders

I wouldn't be too worried about no Arsenal defenders, think Mendy will offer attacking threat anyway + doubling up on City defence isn't a bad idea imo.

Pre-season Southampton look terrible defensively, maybe swap Cedric for a 4m? (Wan-Bissaka) & invest the .5 to replace Daniels?

having looked again tend to agree. Tried to balance the funds this year rather than the big hitters
Would like Sane but a) would need to lose Ederson, Mendy or Kun and b) rotation risk

The Midfield is weak? The template midfield like KDB started very poorly last season due to a lack of form while players in other positions like DDG outscored them. Form over price is more important.

Sane rested, fully fit. No brained. Will definitely start. KDB won't. I had KDB last season from start he played far to deep. Sane is 0.5 cheaper too

    Arnie Aubameyang

    Subs:

If you don’t own Salah and he hauls, but your differential captain fails, you have just given 50% of the game a head start ....

If you do own Salah as captain and he blanks, you have just given maybe 15% of the game a head start on you

There are some odds you can’t ignore 😉

Hypothetically, If it was off the back of a 300 point season and he was part of an even stronger team the folliwing season, then I would own him and captain him.

In reality - If he was owned by 50% of the game this season, as well as Salah, I would consider owning him but captain Salah

your team has 11 players each week, Salah hauling isn't the be all and end all

I'll also have more money spread about my team in the event that my captain does blank

      1. willl
        • 11 Years

anyway, Salah is 47.4% owned, so if he blanks, you've just given 52.6% of the game a headstart!

Surely you should do whatever you think will yield the most points over the season?
Who cares what anyone else does.
The only time to worry is when you are ahead in a mini league with a few weeks left - that is the only time I would consider who anyone else had.
Rank is meaningless at the start of the season.

Basically if you get your alternative captain wrong and Salah hauls, you will be sitting with a GW1 rank of 2.5 mill and playing catch up from the very first game 🙁

If Salah fails, you are still likely to be sitting in the top 1 million 🙂

I had the same thing, was benching Mendy to play Cedric. Then realised Southampton are awful, City are fantastic. I'd rather play Mendy in a 'tough' fixture than Cedric in an easy one. So Cedric became Peltier who looks very happy on my bench.

You don't have to downgrade to the lowest possible value just because you don't play someone. It's good to have cover for unexpected circumstances and if Cedric does well vs Fulham he could increase in price.

You have 6m defenders because they offer attacking value even in difficult games in addition to the CS chance thats always there. Cedric offers nothing.

You could instead buy the 6m defender in your early GW2 wildcard, because it’s a winning strategy.

No I know, I was being sarcastic. 🙂

We had an exchange before where he said we should plan for an early wildcard and I disagreed with him.

    Thoughts on this?
I know double ars strikers doesn't look good but I really think these 2 will tear it up. Look at Laca's gls/assists last season and I'm sure he was in and out of the team, low on confidence. Seems to get on well with auba now and vibes are flowing.

    ...............................Patricio..................................
    ..........Robertson PVA Bailly Mendy...................
    ............Salah Jota Richarlison Mahrez...............
    .................Aubameyang Lacazette.....................

I have my 11th player slot free - can go up to 6.5 but have max City & Liverpool already... so many potential good GW1-4 scorers:

Austin, Jota, Mili, King, Richarlison, Theo, Pedro, Azpi, Alonso

Currently on Jota as he is nailed & OOP & plays a team with a manager who concedes lots of goals in GW1... right call? Stretching to 7.0 brings Mkhi, Zaha & Arnie into the equation which might ultimately be a better call, it I have minimum bench as it is & keeping 1.0ITB to do Martial & Sané > KDB & Pogba

I've also gone for Jota for the same reasons but plenty of friendlies to go before the start of the season.
I also have Arnie though, opening 5 fixtures aren't as bad as people make out.

Lamela could be a nice differential going into the season. He has the bonus of being a player who could likely get a prolonged run of games if he takes his chances and does well at the start of the season.

Would downgrade Mkhi to a 5.0 mid with decent fixtures or who rotates well with Neves and improve the defense with the funds, targeting Cedric and Daniels for improvement.

    Suggestions on my latest bunch!!!

    Ederson Boruc
    Baines Shaw VVD Tomkins Bissaka
    Salah Sane Mkhi Richarlison Ward
    Auba Zaha Arnie

    0M ITB.

    Thoughts on midfield!!!
    And VVD/Robertson???

    1. 420king

      Robertson, Coleman.

Thought Baines is on penalities. Isn't he!!! Still Coleman offers better value than Bainsyyy!!!

And does Robertson not have any UCL rotational problems???

Normally you'd want to rest your fullbacks before the UCL game but I didn't notice Klopp doing this last season.

That was Moreno's injury mate!! That's the reason I'm inclined to VVD, but Robbie offers more attacking threat.
So wondering whom to go with!!!

Yeah, but Moreno wasn't rested when he was first choice in the group stages. He was before game 2, but that was CC anyway. The only time Klopp rested either was before the Roma game at the end of the season.

Last season the template team started poorly during the first 8 GW's so be careful following the crowd because most managers here don't know which teams or players will be in form.

    Best 6.5 option?

    A/ Jota
    B/ Richarlison
    C/ Pedro
    D/ Lamela
    E/ Other

And which is the best 4.5 keeper combo?
