Burnley continue to struggle with injury this pre-season as Robbie Brady suffered another setback in his recovery.

His expected absence should make it easier to predict who will start on the wings for them in Gameweek 1 but questions still remain over their goalkeeper situation.

Elsewhere, there was another stern warning for those invested in Ryan Sessegnon (£6.5m).

ATLETICO BILBAO 1-3 FULHAM | FULHAM 0-0 FIORENTINA

  • Goals: Neeskens Kebano (£4.5m), Aboubakar Kamara (£4.5m), own-goal
  • Assists: Jean Michaël Seri (£5.5m), Ryan Sessegnon (£6.5m)

The trio of goals scored against Atletico Bilbao ended a run of three goalless matches for Fulham as Ryan Sessegnon (£6.5m) finally involved himself in attacking returns this summer. It was his cross that Yeray Álvarez directed into his own net towards the end of the first of two Cup of Traditions matches. However, there was further confirmation that Sessegnon offers much less in terms of attacking potential when playing at left-back. He was used there in the second match of the afternoon, for the second time in pre-season, and had little influence on the game. The 12.1 percent of Fantasy managers who currently own the 18-year-old should make themselves aware of that and keep an eye on new signing Maxime Le Marchand (£4.5m) – any injury or suspension to him could force Sessegnon back into defence this season.

These two matches saw new signing Fabri (£4.5m) make his first appearances in goal, and give us a chance to see whether he could take the number one jersey from Marcus Bettinelli (£4.5m) this season. Of particular note was the former Besiktas man’s distribution, able to easily find his full-backs and get play moving well from the back. According to local press, this is an area that Bettinelli has struggled with in the past which could hand the advantage to Fabri, who also has experience of playing Champions League football too.

In front of him in the first match, we saw Le Marchand, Tim Ream (£4.5m), Denis Odoi (£4.5m) and Cyrus Christie (£4.5m) line up as the back-four for the third time in pre-season. No other combination has been used as often by Slaviša Jokanović during the summer, suggesting – barring any further recruitment – they will start at Craven Cottage when Crystal Palace come to visit on August 11.

Neeskens Kebano (£4.5m) has done his chances of featuring from the beginning in that match no harm after a decent display in these friendlies. The DR Congo international faces competition for a start on the flanks of the front-three from Sessegnon and Andre Schürrle (£6.0m), who made his first appearance for Fulham against Fiorentina, but is currently the club’s top-scorer in pre-season and with more minutes in the bank than Schürrle. However, the German World Cup winner reportedly impressed in his 45-minute spell in the Cup of Traditions final and, as the new signing, is expected to also be in with a strong shout of starting Gameweek 1.

FULHAM XI vs BILBAO (4-3-3): Fabri; Le Marchand, Odoi, Ream, Christie; Johansen, Seri, Cairney; Sessegnon, Kamara, Kebano.

FULHAM XI vs FIORENTINA (4-3-3): Fabri; Sessegnon, Odoi, Ream, Christie; McDonald, Johansen, Seri; Kebano, Kamara, Schürrle.

BURNLEY 0-0 MONTPELIER

  • Goals: None
  • Assists: None

Robbie Brady’s (£5.5m) recovery from injury hit a setback in Burnley’s latest pre-season match, a 0-0 draw with Montpelier. The former Hull City man has been on his way back from a knee injury sustained in December but was forced off with a hamstring problem just before half-time on Sunday. Manager Sean Dyche has sought to ease fears that Brady will be on the sidelines for some time, which should be of interest to Fantasy managers aware of the Irishman’s potential this season.

“It was a very minor thing in his hamstring so we took him off immediately. He’s been out for a while, so we don’t want any secondary injuries if we can help it.” – Sean Dyche

Regardless of how much of a setback this proves to be for Brady, his withdrawal strengthens the case for investment in either Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£6.om) or Aaron Lennon (£5.0m) – the two wingers who started against Aberdeen last week. The Icelandic international has one goal to his name in pre-season and is the key man for set-pieces while Lennon has found the net twice so far this summer and is £1.0m cheaper.

Burnley are still waiting on an update on Nick Pope’s (£5.0m) dislocated shoulder, with him having seen a specialist this week. With Tom Heaton (£5.0m) carrying a calf strain, the prospects of the Clarets’ defence are somewhat up in the air. There is no return date set for either him or Pope yet with Anders Lindegaard the most likely stand-in so far. It may be difficult to invest in £5.0m defenders like James Tarkowski or Ben Mee if there are doubts over the man between the sticks.

“The shoulder joint definitely came out and (went) back in so it just depends on the damage along the way. We’ll see what the specialist says tomorrow. When you look at the incident it was a freaky incident. I’ve seen the stills and it is just a freak moment in a game. It went back in pretty quick, so it depends on the disruption in the shoulder. We’ll find out more tomorrow.” – Sean Dyche

Jeff Hendrick (£5.5m) was the only member of the starting XI that faced Aberdeen to feature from the beginning in this match, as Dyche largely used either second-string options or players on their return from injury problems. Ashley Barnes (£6.0m) was one of the latter, his involvement against Montpelier the first since the opening match of pre-season. The former Plymouth Argyle striker managed 60 minutes before being replaced by Nakhi Wells (£4.5m). Sam Vokes (£5.5m) started alongside him after coming off the bench to equalise for Burnley at Pittodrie.

BURNLEY XI (4-4-2): Legzdins; Taylor, Dunne, Long, Bardsley; Brady (McNeil 42’), Hendrick (Goodridge 60’), O’Neill, Walters; Barnes (Wells 60’), Vokes (Agyei 70’).

Hello fellow managers. Like most of you i've gone back and forth this pre-season, never actually finding a squad i'm totally satisfied with. My current set up is the one i like the most, but i'd very much like an outside look. Please RMT:

    Pickford
    Ward, Doherty, Smalling
    Salah, Martial, Jota, Richarlison, Mkhitaryan
    Arnautovic, Kane

    Bench: Fabianski, Schlupp, Bonatini, 4.0.
This leaves me with 1.5 ITB. Tips very welcome.

I think aubameyang or Aguero before Kane just now. Maybe see can you get mane in for mkhitarian if you can find the extra money

I heard some where (can't remember where) that Martial looks to start up top until Lukaku and Rashford are back from extended vacation. As he's registered as a midfielder that opens the possibility for more points. I'm more than happy to let him go if that is untrue, though.

I debated Martial too but Mourinho has confirmed that Lukaku may well be back for GW1 now which puts into doubt Sanchez and Martial's up front status for the first couple.

Martial didn’t travel to America and Mourinho said he doesn’t know if he’ll be at training when they return. Looks unlikely to play the first few games at least, could well be leaving United

he played 2 games in america then came home to see his girlfriend give birth i think he was absolute dog turd in both games and is taking sulking to another level because he wants to move to another club in england and jose wont sell him to one

so even though i expect him to be there after transfer window closes you can't rule out him being sold abroad straight after

After the interview Mourinho gave after the Madrid game I can really see Martial leaving.

Especially the comments about majority of the players having a good attitude...and repeating majority.

If you got stuck in an elevator right now with no phone, no other way of connecting to the internet, but plenty of food and water to survive, and you were rescued at 7:01pm BST on Friday 10th August, would you be happy with how your team is currently set up?

Played around with that earlier and came up with this (worth noting this isn't the team I'll start GW1 with, but illustrates what those released frontline funds can do)

      Fab
      Pereira / Robertson / Ward
      Salah / Mahrez / Hazard / Richarlison / Mane
      Arnie / Zaha

      Stek / W-B / Peltier / Kamara

I’ve been playing with the idea as well (see post on last page).
The thing for me is, that I wouldn’t want to spread the funds out too much, as that would immediately call for a WC if one of the premium strikers starts firing.
So for me it has to be flexible enough to be “fixed” with 2 or max 3 transfers. That leads to who you would invest in in midfield. Hazard and KDB uncertain atm. If punting on Sanchez, maybe, but very risky.
Spreading the funds on defence and several mid/premium mids isn’t viable imo.

I don’t buy the “premium strikers start firing” mantra.

Remember Kane exit last year, people ditched Kane, then he scored back to back hattricks then people jumped back on him and he went back to average. By the time we realize they’re firing they have already fired and we’re chasing points.

It’s not possible to predict when the high scoring runs of a couple of weeks will occur. Kane blanked in so many easy games last year, I know, I captained him for most of them.

Took me a long time to realize Salah had to be captained, at which point Kane was wasting 12.5m of my funds.

Hhhhm maybe. Each season tends to have a premium player from each category which tends to perform, suggesting the need to spread funds. I do agree any template must be based on 2-3 weeks ahead. I don't see the point of WC unless players are benched or injured.

It seems to be a popular opinion that Sterling is overpriced this season.

I would like to know exactly why. Is it because...

      A) You think 11m for his output last season is too much. (this can't possibly be the reason because he was easily the best pick after Salah, 6.9 PPM, consistent and explosive, had about 7-8 double digit hauls from what I remember)

      B) You think he's an average player in a strong team and don't think he'll replicate his output from last season (I have my doubts about this too)

      C) You think he'll be rotated a lot more after the purchase of Mahrez.

      D) Something else?

Mainly C for me, and the fact the other City midfield assets should offer stronger value, with KDB providing the best balance between price and security of starts once we're a few weeks into the season.

      3. TheDonald
        • 7 Years

Better value in other players is the main reason.

Plus he's unlikely to start the season, so no point even considering him right meow.

A combination of B and C, but importantly you don't have to make a judgement on him as he's unlikely to play the first couple of gameweeks.

I think Sterling isn't close to world class, but Guardiola always make wingers shine. That's his speciality. Sterling can be a horrible player and still worth it at 11.0 as long as he's a winger for a Guardiola team.

      5. Greenbackbøøg…

Not sure if city's formation will change so that someone else will benefit more from scoring, lets be honest, large amounts of easy goals. If City and Sterling play similarly as last year then he'll still be worth it of course

In parts both B and C. He neeeds a looooot of chances to produce goals, which he managed to Get brilliantly last season. But im not convinced that 1) city' gonna produce the same amount of goals 2) Sterling's gonna play the same amount of minutes. In addition to mahrez coming in, Bilva has a year in the prem now, pep might dabble with two strikers again.

Add to this that in order to "justify" the 11.0 pricetag, he needs to be considered for captaincy regularly. I prob wouldnt be confident with handling him the armband on a regular basis.

Mendy back will allow Jesus & Sterling to compete/rotate narrow left therefore, is a huge risk.

That's exactly where I am - I've got Bobby + Azpie. It makes a lot of statistical sense (http://whogottheassist.com/the-death-of-the-third-striker/ ). But it's a real psychological shift killing off the 3rd striker & downgrading the both the others, when I had Kane there the whole season.

12 goals in the championship last year and 15 league goals in total in the three prior seasons... am I missing something on Mitrovic? He might get 5 or 10 goals but I don’t really see anything to suggest more?

But you have players like Josh King & Austin who are way more premier league proven than Mitro for the same/less with good/better fixtures... you have Zaha/Arnie for a smidgen more who offer more again.

Mitro could do well so good luck to those jumping on board, but I’d rather be late than early with that sort of gamble.

Any time I’ve seen him play in he premiership he’s been muck too so maybe I just picked a few bad games to watch him in.

Hit on a surprisingly good (imo) team with 1.5 spare ITB:

        Fab
        VVD, Bailly, Doherty
        Salah, Eriksen, Mahrez, Milivojevic
        Firmino, Arnie, King
(Boruc, Tomkins, AWB, Ward) +1.5 ITB

Light on City but would do Mahrez or Eriksen > KDB when he’s back, or Fab >Ederson, Or 4.5>Mendy, or Milivojevic >Bilva etc

        1. Licious Lizard (delete acc)
            7 years, 7 months ago

            A really nice looking team.
Although I would be a bit concerned on general flexibility if the premiums up top starts firing. You could downgrade Mahrez/Eriksen of course.
I don’t like the Mili pick.

            1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
              • 16 Years

Yeah ultimately i am banking on Salah (c) and the others making up for any big returns from Kun/Auba.

If Kun or Auba did happen to score 4 goals in their GW1 match the 1.5 ITB would allow Firmino > Kun, but I cant’t see it personally (couldn’t be very very wrong of course!)

I see Mili as a nice reliable sort, and the pick of the 6.5’s - should do very well from Pens, DFK’s, IFK’s and corners as long as Zaha continues to draw lots of fouls in the attacking third which should trigger pens, DFKs, IFKs, and also force a lot of corners.

Mili obviously will take the pens, but he is also a DFK specialist. And he is actually also a great header of the ball & they target him along with the centrebacks & Benteke at IFK’s & corners.

So he has many ways to score, I would estimate something like below for him:

              4-6 penalties
              1-2 DFK’s
              1-2 IFK’s/Corners
              1-2 assists
              8-10 Clean sheets
              35 games
              15-20 baps

However many points that works out at, id say he’s got a great chance of 150 ish points, possibly 160 or even 170 if things went right for him and he sneaked a few goals from play as well.

Surprised with the Alonso hate. He probably will play. He looks to be favoured over Emerson based on pre-season games so far, has a decent free kick on him, gets plenty of crosses and even the odd open play goal in.

Mahrez (but may change to D Silva) and Agüero for me.

          RMT

          Pickford (patricio)
Coleman Davies TAA Daniels ( W-Bis)
Sane Mhiki Mane[c] ( Cairney Jota)
          Aub Firmino Tosun

Got 0.5 in bank so can get KDB in for sane maybe.
Unsure on Mhiki and Aub for GW1 and 2... do ppl think Aguero and another 7mil mid / 7.5 for aub and Mhiki?
          Cheers

Wouldn't fancy Cedric, schurrle, Pedro, sigurdsson, Austin. If you have arnautovic always play him

Here's a challenge, need to shave 0.5 from this team to allow for a KDB upgrade when available.

          Fab - Foster
          Robo - Ward - Shaw - Cedric - Wan-B
          Salah - Sane - Mane - Eriksen - Stephens
          Arnie - Zaha - Wood

Could do Shaw to a 4.5, then I've got a 3 way rotation which is pretty healthy. Would even consider dropping Foster, but just can't bring myself to play Fab GW1.

Nah, I'll probably do Sane > KDB so can't be that. Thanks tho.

I thought that was a possibility, but saw it as the easiest route. In that case it's Shaw, for me.

You better hope he doesn't go up in price by 0.1 then. I'd just get him from the start TBH. I'd sacrifice Shaw though, in answer to your question. Could even downgrade on of your keepers to a 4.0m or do Sane to Mahrez/Dilva.

Everton and burnley have nice fixtures to start, as such I'd like a player from each, who do/would you have?

          1) gylfi, richarlison, (tosun), (Coleman)

          2) wood, gudmundsson, (a defender)

          Thanks

I'm going wood and a Burnley defender. Keeping away from Everton for now.

            Thanks all!

I'm a bit skeptical of richarlison, two good months is all he had, so I'm surprised that people are flocking to him.

Also, very little love for the burnley attack, think they are nicely priced.

I don't get the Shaw hype given how injury prone he is

Unai Emery is much better at setting a team up defensively? He won't wanna get spanked on his debut either!

Wouldn't touch morata unless he shows form for a few weeks. Has mendy had any gametime yet preseason? Might be a risk
