The start of the new season is just days away and the Scoutcast crew are still full of doubts about their 15-man Fantasy Premier League squads.

Andy, Az, David and Mark join me to mull over our likely strategies for the start of the 2018/19 campaign as well as reveal our current line-ups.

Across our 82-minute chat, a consensus emerges on backing Manchester City and Liverpool premium assets. But that could all change depending on tomorrow’s transfer deadline day deals and surprise team news.

Meanwhile, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth look set to supply our teams with a supporting cast of bargain enablers due to favourable fixtures. Well, for now at least.

But the groupthink soon breaks down when we discuss forward options, with Mark looking exclusively for value up top, while the rest of us are more keen to splash our cash.

The hive-mind soon returns at the end as we reveal our top choice for the Gameweek 1 armband, so to help those daring to shun a certain Egyptian we also offer up a host of alternative captaincy options.

This ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Tuesday evening. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

If you’re a traditional type, you can acquire the mp3 audio version via this link on the first player below, or take in the full visual experience via the second player below.

Also, this week we are publishing a series of videos looking in detail at each of the Scoutcast regulars’ current Gameweek 1 line-ups.

Mane isn’t on pens more than likely.

They are both really great options. IMO neither are far better than the other so I’d go with your gut or your personal preference.

Alright boys, lets hear what you have to say about this lot please and thank you.

    DDG
    Robertson - D.Luiz - Shaw
    Salah (c) - B.Silva - Willian - Richarlison
    Aguero - Zaha - King

    Hamer - Mendy - Stephens - Wan-Bissaka

Most people won't like Mendy on the bench but I really think Arsenal will grab a goal or two and I have better options on the pitch imo. DDG and Zaha will eventually become Fabianski and Arny on a WC when the fixtures swing. I like it to start.

I would tend to agree, but I'm hoping Willian will be that guy this year with consistent minutes, and Silva could be a cheap route into the City attack for a few weeks at least. Having 8 players from top 5 teams feels good.

Oh lord, as a Chelsea fan I know. A lot of people last season were going on about how it was crazy that he wasn't a regular starter, but if they watched him go on dry spells for ages they would have realized. I think he will do well under Sarri, and he's been more consistent since 2018 rolled in. He used to have a knack for passing the ball the the opposing keeper, he seems to have stopped doing that which is nice.

Everton will be top after 9 games with those fixtures. Sig @ 2.2% just seems a no-brainer. 7.5m is not very expensive for a CAM on set pieces.

I've like Mitrovic. He was a monster for Fulham, 12 goals in 17 matches and more shots in the box per minute than any premier league striker other than Kane. In the only premier league season he got significant minutes he scored a respectable 9 goals in 2100 minutes at age 20.

I've also talked myself into Austin. When he gets the minutes, he bags the goals. I have less confidence in him though.

A Luiz is for life, not just for Easter. A decent option, if not for me. I have had Shaw for ages but took him out as I just can't trust Mou or Shaw himself beyond GW1.

  21. stat

If Rose leaves Spurs on loan, and Spurs don't sign another LB, I am guessing that make Davies nailed on.

Assuming Davies is nailed on, would you rather have:

    A) DDG set and forget + rotate Kabasele/Bamba/AWB (one of them starts, two benched)
    B) Rotate Ryan/Foster + Davies set and forget + AWB/Peltier permabenched

    1. Niemi
      • 12 Years
      8 years, 1 month ago

I assume he's nailed on from the start anyway, but can't see Spurs letting him go without replacing him. Kurzawa has been mentioned.

      1. stat
        8 years, 1 month ago

That's true, now that I think about it, it would be extremely risky to only have 1 proper LB in your team.
And yeah he is nailed from the start but could still get rotated if they sign someone else (or Rose stays). Think I might stick with Dave for the safety of nailed on Man Utd defensive coverage.

    2. Netley Lucas
      • 11 Years
      8 years, 1 month ago

I would assume KWP can relieve Davies at times so the gap in quality may widen but the risk is still present

Cheap keeper & premium defender seems to win the race

      1. stat
        8 years, 1 month ago

True, I'd still be willing to take that risk though since he'd be likely to play more games like you implied.
Would you still go for Davies even if Rose stays?

      2. Niemi
        • 12 Years
        8 years, 1 month ago

KWP can play LB, but really don't rate him in that position. Would be more than happy with him as cover for RB, not LB. Aurier could also cover LB, but hopefully there's an incoming at LB.

    Which do you like?

    1- Mane, Eriksen, Zaha
    2- Sanchez, Townsend, Firmino

Leaning toward the latter, as I think Sanchez will have a big game, Townsend really game into his own at the end of last season, and a Firmino to outperform Mane for another season.

Very tempted to put TAA in.

As I see it, he's just as much first choice as Robertson and £1m cheaper. We know Moreno and Clyne will come in sometimes but it shouldn't be a problem at least until CL starts.
He's probably only 50/50 to start vs West Ham, but I wouldn't be too bothered about that, I think West Ham look good and Liverpool conceding wouldn't be any surprise anyway.

Would much prefer him to, say, Shaw. At the same price but we know Mourinho isn't his biggest fan and could haul him off at HT. And Young coming back soon means he's an inevitable early transfer you have to make.

Think we all are but the fear of Robbo becoming the new Alonso is scaring us to death 😆

I don't think he's anywhere near as attacking as Alonso now, is he? He's crossing the ball in a fair few times, but Alonso was just in the box all the time.

Yeah, but he's a menace and his crossing is so good to folk who can finish. Pile a load of cleanies & baps with the odd goal and he could beat the lot.

Yeah, but crossing could work with TAA too, albeit to a lesser extent? Robbo may get a few assists more than TAA but TAA is a full million cheaper. I was more interested in the goal threat really. I don't know how they do bonus wise though.

I think it probably boils down to a gut feeling that Robbo can smash it, but from a pure value pov you may have a point and it's something I've been pondering too.

If he's been in your team all along, I wouldn't budge this late though. The regret could be too much if he gets off to a flyer. I haven't had Robbo in many of my drafts, so am always looking to shift him out. 😛

I dunno, I think he could be. Last season in his earlier games he had to restrain himself due to the dodgy defence, but he's got the security of not only VVD but also Fabinho to allow him to range forward, as Alonso has. And he'll be crossing for Salah to run onto - what's not to like?

What's not to like is the price only and if TAA can offer comparable returns for a mill less.

Robbo the new Alonso - that's a very good way of putting it!

I'm actually going with Robbo and TAA (plus Salah). TAA can sit out GW1 with PVA and Mendy lining up and Wan-Bis in first reserve. I'll normally go 4 at the back with that lot.

Full backs don't get forward as often as wingbacks, so he can't get attacking returns as much as Alonso did.

In the CS, Mendy had no attacking threat in the first half either. Only when Pep subbed out Sane and changed formation did he get forward.

TAA over Shaw definitely. But please don't compare Moreno with Clyne. Moreno is definitely second choice by a distance. Clyne maybe slightly and maybe used as first choice in certain matches. Having said that 25-30 starts at 5.0 isn't bad for a quite attaçking Liverpool defender.

In fairness Moreno was actually doing well last season up until his injury which gave Robertson his big chance. Klopp likes Moreno he will get the odd game.

Firmino vs Mane: Both obviously starting, no reason to think either will highly outscore/underscore the other, who do you think will consistently be subbed off more frequently or first? Sturridge will come on for Firmino, Shakiri likely for Mane (if he's not starting). Sturridge has been in great pre-season form, and Klopp will likely be more than content with letting him finish out each game if they hit a two goal margin. Shakiri can also be used to relieve Salah in the same situation. Torn between the two, who do you think will accumulate more game time?

Was thinking the same thing along with most of us I suspect. One thing I do like about Bobby over Mane is the structure, gives a nicer balance of funds. However I do like Arnie & Zaha so a bit torn. Basically valuing them the same mate, other factors are at play.

My intuition tells me Firmino, but as my team is set up for 343 with Salah, the selection of Firmino dictates no option for a midfielder in the premium 8-10 bracket once a breakout player stands out, and this is why I can't seem to take Mane out of my team for Bobby

I've been thinking this through as well.
I've been worried that Mane will lose minutes to Fat Shaq, but now I'm coming round to thinking that the Studge is looking fit and hot and will get significant minutes. Even if it means both Shaq and Studge are regular 65th minute substitutes, it still reduces the number of points likely to be bagged by Mane and Bobby.

As a result I've taken both out of my side. Salah remains of course along with Robbo. My 3rd Pool is now TAA - he'll also be rotated but it's a lesser investment. Keep an eye on Keita - he should get more minutes and if he looks like being an assist machine I'll be first on his bandwagon.

Keita sure is accumulating assists at a notable pace so far. Feeling content with TAA until the first international break or so?

TAA's a risk. Depends on Clyne's form and whether TAA can maintain his standards at such a young age. But for 5m it's a worthwhile gamble, easily rectified by a 2FT to get Keita. I'm not putting a certain timescale on it - it's a watch-n-see for me.

He might if Kante isn't ready but mostly I think he'll be used as an impact sub with Barkley or RLC (or a TDD newbie) starting.
