Our final Scout Notes from the opening weekend of the 2018/19 Premier League season analyses the Sunday tea-time match between Arsenal and Manchester City at the Emirates.

The reigning champions began their title defence with an impressive 2-0 win over Unai Emery’s side, with one name in particular attracting the attention – and subsequent investment – of many Fantasy managers.

Arsenal 0-2 Manchester City

  • Goals: Raheem Sterling (£11.0m), Bernardo Silva (£7.5m)
  • Assists: Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) x2

For the 60,000 Fantasy Premier League managers who benched Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) for Manchester City’s 2-0 win at the Emirates on Sunday, the match turned into a painful watch.

The French left-back delivered a superb performance that was Marcos Alonso-esque in its ambition, both impressing and infuriating his manager in equal measure and culminating with two assists, three bonus points and a clean sheet. Mendy’s total score of 15 points was the highest of any defender in Gameweek 1.

Mendy has already matched the total assist count of Fabian Delph (£5.5m) and Danilo (£5.5m) for last season, both of whom deputised at left-back in the Frenchman’s injury-enforced absence.

Pep Guardiola’s words after the match tempered Mendy’s appeal, suggesting that the City head coach would possibly seek to reign in the former Monaco man’s attacking instincts a little in future – though most of his beef seemed to be with Mendy’s prolific use of social media:

That is not good [when he is acting like a centre forward].

Sometimes you want to kill him. Sometimes you say, ‘Wow, what a player we have.’ He gives this extra energy with Kyle [Walker], helping the attack so consistently . . . Hopefully we can convince him to be calm and focus on what he has to do.

Kyle Walker (£6.5m), who has delivered six assists in each of his last two seasons, was as gung-ho as his opposite full-back at times, though his performance was more disciplined in its scope – the England defender at least stuck to the right flank, while Mendy persistently popped up in a central position.

Guardiola had set his team up in a 4-3-3/4-1-4-1 formation, with Fernandinho (£5.5m) the deepest of the three central midfielders alongside Ilkay Gundogan (£5.5m) and Bernardo Silva (£7.5m).  Guardiola had teased the prospect of a start for Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) in his press conference on Friday, but the Belgian midfielder had to make do with a half-hour cameo off the bench.

Raheem Sterling (£11.0m) did make a surprise start, however, but not in his customary right wing role. With Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m) stationed ahead of Walker on his City league debut, Sterling was forced to patrol the opposite flank as Guardiola overlooked Leroy Sane (£9.5m) for their season opener.

Sane’s full pre-season with the league champions would ordinarily have seen him favourite to start ahead of Sterling, who only returned to training last Monday, but Guardiola’s cautionary words about the German over the summer were perhaps a clue that all is not completely well between the pair.

That Sterling impressed and scored from the left wing – cutting in from the flank and firing past an unsighted Petr Cech (£5.0m) for City’s opening goal – adds further doubt as to Sane’s short-term prospects of a start.

Sterling was only the seventh-most popular City midfield asset in FPL before kick-off, with his price hike, World Cup-affected pre-season and increased competition on the wing all contributing factors to his ownership of just 2.1%.

The England international quickly gave us a reminder of what he is capable of, however, registering more penalty box touches than any Premier League midfielder this weekend.

Sergio Aguero (£11.0m) led the line as expected for City, though the afternoon was a frustrating one for his owners – the Argentinean striker should have registered an attacking return just before Silva’s goal, wasting a two-on-one opportunity with De Bruyne only a square ball away from a tap-in.

With either one (or both) of Walker and Mendy advancing in such cavalier fashion, a fluid City resembled a 3-4-3 or even a Jorge Sampaoli-esque 2-3-5 at times and FPL managers have been quick to react to the Frenchman’s attacking performance in particular: Mendy has attracted well over 100,000 new owners since the Gameweek 1 deadline passed.

Mahrez did enough in his hour on the pitch to suggest he could be worth the £9.0m outlay, forcing Cech into a fine save from a free-kick and whistling another shot just wide of the Arsenal goalkeeper’s right-hand post. Mahrez took six corners for City too, though it has to be said that his prominence at set-piece duties was in part due to De Bruyne watching on from the bench. How the two will share dead-ball responsibilities when both are on the pitch remains to be seen.

Arsenal began the match with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) as their nominated striker, with Alexandre Lacazette (£9.5m) dropping to the bench and Mesut Ozil (£8.5m) and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.0m) flanking the Gabonese forward.

Aaron Ramsey (£7.5m) was handed a start in the midfield three, though the biggest surprise was Matteo Guendouzi (£4.5m) – who admittedly has had a fine pre-season for Unai Emery’s side – being preferred to the more experienced Lucas Torreira (£5.0m) in the engine room.

With Sead Kolasinac (£5.0m) and Nacho Monreal (£5.5m) missing through injury, FPL midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles (£4.5m) deputised in the back four – though the curse of the left-back slot struck again as the Arsenal youngster limped from the field just after half an hour to be replaced by the veteran Stephan Lichtsteiner (£5.0m).

Emery gave an update on Maitland-Niles’ injury afterwards and hinted that Monreal could feature at Stamford Bridge next weekend:

Today we are going to do the medical analysis with the doctor. Nacho is starting with the group, working yesterday and maybe he can come in, maybe, for the next match. I think every day is important to know how they are.

Emery’s insistence that Arsenal play out from the back made Cech’s inclusion in the starting line-up all the more surprising, given how he struggled with the ball at his feet – the experienced goalkeeper almost made a horrendous hash of one back-pass as he rolled the ball inches wide of his own post – and Bernd Leno‘s (£5.0m) showing in 2-0 win over Lazio last weekend.

Cech did, at least, make some fine saves to keep the scoreline respectable and Emery’s post-match comments suggested that the veteran shot-stopper is his current preferred option between the posts:

We want the competitiveness from the goalkeepers and also every player in the squad. The pre-season is the same opportunity, the same chances for the goalkeepers.

We spoke also Petr did a very good pre-season, also today I think he played good also. Also he has this experience to continue defending our goal.

Leno is starting with us, he’s working very well, he played well in pre-season. But he can wait to arrive in this moment.

Lacazette’s introduction early in the second half saw the Frenchman play up top and Aubameyang switch to the left flank, with Ozil dropping back to become the most advanced midfielder in the central three.

This set-up is one Emery has experimented with in pre-season, though it must be noted that the former Seville and Paris Saint-Germain manager fielded the same front three in his starting XI at the Emirates yesterday as he did when the Gunners met next weekend’s opponents Chelsea at the beginning of the month.

Lacazette did have a noticeable impact on Sunday though, registering more shots on goal and penalty box touches in 36 minutes than Aubameyang did over 90.

Arsenal XI (4-3-3): Cech; Bellerin, Sokratis, Mustafi, Maitland-Niles (Lichtsteiner 35′); Guendouzi, Xhaka (Torreira 70′), Ramsey (Lacazette 54′); Mkhitaryan, Ozil, Aubameyang

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Walker, Stones, Laporte, Mendy; Fernandinho, Gundogan, Bernardo Silva; Mahrez (De Bruyne 60′), Sterling (Sane 86)’, Aguero (Jesus 79′)

Just Sanchez > KDB. You’re opening yourself to,a world of,pain selling Luiz for a hit before a plum home fixture, for Mendy who is not 100% guaranteed to start a plum home fixture.

That said, if you have a gut feel - go for it!

If you’re daft enough to play Bednarek instead of Mendy then no way you deserve the points off the bench! 😉

There should be no auto-subs in the game, if you play a player who gets 0mins then that’s just 0pts... No need to add such an element of luck into the game imo!

Then it’s tough luck, part of the game! Ask yourself which one is the lesser of the “evils”:

            A) a jammy haul like above with Mendy coming on for Bednarek (for your rival)

            B) a late injury (for your team)

I also think the game would be better without double points for captaincy, but it’s just me! Each to their own! 🙂

You can say all that in hindsight now that Bednarek didnt play and Mendy got 2 assists while Arsenal were poor in front of goal. And one of Mendy's assist was to Sterling in which Mendy didnt actually play much part. That being said, I can see his attacking threat and am glad I had him in my team.

Rough: Have King and Wilson. Wilson steals King's penalty and then obviously misses. Probably lost an assist, a goal and whatever bonus they would have had as well. A 10+ points swing. Davies and Eriksen 2 pointers.

Smooth: Not much, the only players who performed were template that everyone has like Mendy, Robertson, Silva and Salah. A bit above average on 77.

15 points on the bench, 12 of them Wan-Bissaka.
      3 forwards, 26.5m cost, 6 points total.
That last minute clean sheet loss from DDG.
      Smooth:
      Mendy!
      Robertson!
      Captain Salah!
      Mané!
Pereyra as my 6m mid punt!

97 all out, best GW1 I've ever had

Rough - Benched Wan-Bissaka (12) and Walker (7) instead of Aguero (2) and Arnautovic (2), and captained Salah instead of Mane, Mendy or Richarlison.

Smooth - Fortunately all my other outfielders scored at least 6, five of them returning double-digit scores, so my 104 points (without the aid of any chips) was my best season start ever and makes me the early leader in the Mods & Cons League.

True. Starting Aguero and captaining Salah weren't mistakes or even 50-50 calls - they just didn't turn out quite perfectly.

I could arguably have benched Arnautovic or Jorginho instead of Walker - but it was not at all obvious which of these three was going to score the least.

            You probably played it right.

I’m not a fan of starting DM, so would’ve opted for Walker over Jorginho... did not expect him to hit the penalty.

Plenty of positives anyway, congrats on the score/rank. Good start. Just the 89 for me...

My last minute changes due to KdB news:

      B.Silva > KdB
      Robertson > TAA
and restructured team meaning Firmino over Mane

      Unrelated to the KdB news:
      I did Mendy > B.Davies last minute

NOTE: also had a nice AWB points block by KdB also whilst managing to get me 0 points

Pretty much all smooth apart from a couple of blanks.

30 point BB. 107 in total.

I've said it on here before, I'm a firm believer that a top roaring start is the most important element to achieving a high rank.

Last three season's GW1 rank for me:

I’m the same. This probably turned it to be the perfect SGW to play it in recent memory though.

(I also find it amateur to play it first week given uncertainties - but it can of course pay off).

I always opt for the DGW as I’m a bit risk averse when it comes to chips.

Why always opt for a DGW, because it's the perceived wisdom here on FFS or because some blogger said it?
The top 20k average DGW BB score in the last two seasons were 20 points and 16.4 points respectively.
So good luck beating 30 when your're scrabbling around the dreggs for two starters amongst all the rotation whilst keeping all the big hitters you want in the 11.
BB GW1 after a major tournament was viable. I picked 15 starters and anything above 1 CS from the bench was a bonus.
30 points = absolutely nailing it.

Well it makes sense to try and capitalise on players when they have 2 fixtures than just the one.

It’s fair to say this week was an absolute anomaly in terms of points on the bench.

Fair play to those who took the gamble. But it makes more sense to save it for gameweeks with the most potential.

Smooth - 93 points is the best GWK 1 score i've ever had (by far). Mendy and Robbo, with a Midfield of Salah, Mane, Bilva, Richarlison.

Rough – Cedric blocking AWB and then didn’t even get Southamptons clean sheet. All of my forwards getting 2 points each.

Smooth – Mendy and Robertson bombing down the left. My midfield Salah (c), Richarlison scoring 2, B Silva goal, Mane 2 goals.

Smooth: 90 points and 73K rank is the best start I've ever had to a season. My five man midfield scored 65 points (including Salah's captainscy points). My subs performed well in addition to the majority of my team on the pitch.

Rough: Benched 51 points (also a smooth), possibly could have started Mendy over Coleman, never starting AWB over King but those two changes would have seen me get 114 points. My Wolves/Fulham keeper rotation seemed a good idea at the time.....

Unlike most people here, I have had 9 players who blanked:
Ryan, Ben Davies, Eriksen, Milivojevic, Aguero, Austin on the field and (Zohore, Mark Noble!!, Button on the bench).

Happy to have got away with 74 respectable points. I believe all of the above are really good picks and will return points next week, while others blank.

      Positives:
      - Don't have to worry about getting Robertson, Mendy, PvA, Wan Bissaka

      Negatives:
      - Choosing Milivojevic was a mistake. He is playing too deep and is no longer a 5.0 player.

I meant, he is overvalued this season. Also, I am not expecting Palace to get 10 penalties this season. Pedro / Maddison / Richarlison would score more at that price point.

But who am I to know?

It seems that is my only weak point till now, so I used my FT to buy Richarlison. But, if Richarlison doesn't keep playing so offensive, I am not afraid to switch again. That's the position I want to get correct as early as possible. I knew this was going to happen with so many 6.5 options.

Smooth- Shaw as a cheap way into man u clean sheets turned out better than expected for this week.

Rough- Richarlison to Jota on Thursday. Ripping up my team on Friday to accommodate Sanchez as I had a hunch. Took out PVA, Robertson and Mendy for cheaper options to get him in midfield.
      WB third sub.

Struggling to not knee jerk now!

      Patricio (Fab)
      Shaw Luiz Tompkins VVD (WB)
Salah Sanchez Jota Eriksen (Hudson Odoi)
      Aguero king (Kamara)

Really want richarlison and Mendy. But might wait a week, have 2 free transfers, and a clearer picture.

103 points, so a perfect opening.

From all the iterations of teams I had during pre-season, I think my final selection was pretty much perfect. I'm not regretting a single choice I've made, which is a first.

Wan Bissaka on the bench, but I would have never played him in front of any of the players that scored less than him (Aguero, King, Jota, Zaha) anyway so not at all disappointed about that. Glad he has cemented his place as the top 4.0 defender.

A decent start with 91 points, but 30 more points wasted on the bench! (Made up mainly of Mendy and Wan-Bissaka) When does that ever happen?? Which raises the question: is Gameweek 1 actually an intelligent time to play the bench boost chip, given that you can be fairly confident your bench which be half-decent?

who did you bench Mendy for? seems a controversial decision even before the game. Generally if they are 6 mill plus, I don't drop them unless they have a horror fixture. I'm unlikely to drop and city or Liverpool assets unless they play each other or United away

Smooth: My defense with Foster, Mendy, Robertson and Cook scored well. My four lads in MF (Salah, Mane, Richarlison und B.Silva) scored 6 goals among them ... great first gameweek!

Rough: My whole frontlone (Kun, King, Arnie) failed to register any points, while my bench scored pretty well with Tomkins and AWB :X

      Smooth -

Defence - back three of Mendy/Robertson/Shaw - although I had assumed 99% of people would pick all three as they were very obvious picks early, apparently they didn't.

Mid - Richarlison, Mane, Salah (c), BSilva
Again - assumed everyone would pick all of these as they were very obvious picks early on - apparently they didn't

      Rough
AWB on the bench - although given the rest of my team, he was not an obvious starter to pick
Ryan in Goal - why on earth did I pick him (shipped out now for Pickford)
My attack - King and Aguero disappointed, Arnautovic was always a bit of a punt (he may be on borrowed time now)

Overally, pretty smooth with 99 points returned

Scored 75 but should have been much better.
KDB news. I want him long term so made these moves to accommodate him.

      Foster > Patricio 6 v 2
      Fabianski > Hamer bench
      Robertson > TAA 11 v 5
      Bilva > KDB. 8 v 0
      Mane > Sanchez. 16 v 5
      Aguero > Firmino 2 v 5

      43 v 17 late changes cost me 26 points and a score of 101

Smooth - 97 Points, returns from Hart, Mendy, Robertson, PVA, Mendy, Sanchez, Richarlison, Firmino and Zaha

Smooth: three starting defenders (Robertson, Luiz and Kabasele) got clean sheets. Goal for Fraser.

Rough: read Pep’s quote on Friday that De Bruyne was fit, so bought him in. To do this I got rid of Mané and downgraded Mendy to Luiz.

De Bruyne’s little run out and booking then cost me Wan-Bissaka’s 12 points.

Oh, can we discard Wan-Bissaka bench score from any roughs?

a.) we pretty much all had him and,
b.) if you have him and ever considered playing a 4.0m defender ahead of someone better, when we basically all just had a free wildcard, then you probably didn't set your team up properly 🙂

Smooth as a baby's bottom = ignoring the BSilva / KDB last minute panic on here. Not benching Mendy (got to question Mark benching a 6m defender no matter what justification he comes up with! 🙂 Fraser, Richarlison, Mane etc. Switching from DDG to Fab/Fos combo. All in all 107 points and 2.2k rank from week 1!

Rough = Wan Bissaka on bench and captained my joint lowest scoring mid (Salah). Really can't complain though.

Last min change before deadline: Foster, Pickford & Tarkowski to De Gea, Steklenburg & Boly. As I didn't have a 2nd playing Gk I decided not to play my bench boost as I originally planned.

Ended up on 80pts, with 30pts on my bench (inc Wan Bisaka & Mendy, whom I benched to play Boly, the home defender). If I'd not tried to get De Gea in at the last minute and bench boosted with my original team as planned I would have got 120pts!!

This HT is interesting for 3 reasons:

      1. To see those with 100+ scores. WELL DONE.
      2. To see those who dropped Mané or Richarlison or scored less than 60 points. UNLUCKY.
      3. To see those who scored 80+ and are trying to make out any part of their GW was rough. Do you realise how pathetic you sound?? WOULDA SHOULDA COULDA

So a benched total of 37 points. Painful to see that many points on your bench.

      Smooth:

Rough - Mendy (toss up between playing him and Daniels - 10 point loss) and Wan Bissaka on bench (toss up between playing him and Robertson, as thought Liverpool would concede, so only looking at that as a 1 point loss). Had Shaw and Pogba but changed to Bailly and Willian a day before deadline not realising Pogba would play, 14 point loss... feels like I have thrown away 29 points already...
Smooth - Robertson, Richarlison, Silva, Bournemouth clean sheet with Bego in goal...

No joy. Just woe. The FPL site crashing about 5 mins before deadline when I was trying to switch Schurrle out for Richarlison has really ruined the start of the season for me. Someone said I should have known it would happen, as the site slows/crashes just before the deadline on a routine basis. But that's kinda empty argument in my view, given that there is an established deadline and I shouldn't have to account for such maybes. And, I live in the States, so unless there is a Friday game, which is super rare, I'm sleeping when the deadlines hit, so I'm not up to speed with how they usually tend to go in regards to the site crashing.

      Rough.... lots
      1. Day of deadline decided I didn’t need Mane as already had Salah and wanted to upgrade my defence.... so sold Mane and got Mkhi (but benched him)
      2. Decided to “upgrade” Richarlison to Siggy with extra funds, convinced myself Mina was going to score from corners and Siggy will supply
      3. Upgraded Daniels to Mendy. But Benched Mendy and chose to field Coleman, PvA and Robertson.
      4. Benched 12 pts AWB as already had PvA starting.
      5. 5 mins before deadline sold Neves and got Hughes, not sure how I convinced myself.

My midfield on morning of deadline was Mane, Salah, B Silva, Richarlson, Neves... I sold 3 double digit scorers.

I think he'll more likely come in for Gundogan, BSilva being the more advanced of the trio and KDB being a deep lying play maker. Silva is a replacement for DSilva effectively, the latter not even on the bench yesterday and no pre-season games. I cannot see him coming in without a phased return.

Skysports did a good analysis on B Silva's influence this morning, (sorry no link available). Basically saying this will likely be his season to break through. This is great news for managers on here - I like many was probably looking at switching him for KDB when he's fully fit. But im now planning to hold off on this switch.....for now.

Richy is fine, see Facer's Hot Topic on his "injury"
He was also giving stuff away to the crowd after the game, not the actions of someone who's injured.

Any Everton fans have insight into who will replace Jags next week? Holgate?

Have 0.5m in the bank and looking to upgrade Bednarek and strengthen my bench.

There’s absolutely no agreement (I’ve been through the forums this morning).

Reckon Keane keeps his place for now. As soon as Mina is fit he starts though.

Probably Holgate. He played ok when he came on. Will be a risky pick though depending if Mina is up to speed.

How did Coleman and Cairney do?

    Been away and missed MOTD.

Debating getting Cairney out for someone (no idea who) or holding for a week.

Sat on 99 points btw, happy man.

Difficult to judge Everton’s fullbacks given they were down to 10 men for 50+ minutes.

Coleman was instrumental in 2 decent attacks, but his final ball was poor in both.

      Thanks for the info.

I am going Cairney to Neves to catch any price rises and his position on set pieces.

Only thing I need to worry about this week to start Luis or Neves.

Moura and Bilva were my two punts.

Bilva obviously paid off and I'm happy to hang on to him but do you think Moura is relatively safe for a few games with Son going, or is he at risk from a fit Lamela?

Don't know whether to transfer Moura out for a Richardelson or the like or give him another few chances to repay me??

I’m thinking I’ll give King a week or two and maybe switch to a 3-5-2 swapping him for Maddison, liked very much what I saw from him this weekend.

I'll give him 2 more before I either upgrade to Arnie or go 3-5-2
Think he'll be on penos, as it looked like Callum took it because he won it. He also missed, so there's that

Any PS4 owners here? Getting an error on Fifa 18 saying ‘cannot start the application’.

The error is linked to the disc not being read properly however my copy is a digital download? Tried deleteing the download and reinstalling it but the error remains.

    Any ideas?

Smooth - 103 point gameweek thanks to Mane, SALAH, Bernardo, Richarlison Mendy, Robbo, and PVA.
Rough - Would have been 113 points if I started AWB over any of my strikers!

    It could be worse... 🙂
