Our Watchlist player rankings have now been revised following the first Gameweek of the 2018/19 season.

The Watchlist can be found in your sidebar on desktop, or via your slide-in menu on mobile or tablet. It acts as a collection of our current thoughts on player selection for each position, also citing the factors that affect their ranking on the list.

As a general rule, we try to commit to just one player per position per club. However, in some cases we where we believe double-coverage is advisable, two players will be listed instead. We’ve already got two key examples of that this week.

With just one Gameweek played so far, fixtures are playing a slightly bigger role in our rankings than form, although there are some options whose opening weekend performances show some great promise regardless.

Goalkeepers

In goal, we’ve promoted Manchester City’s Ederson (£5.5m) to the top in light of his more appealing fixtures compared to David De Gea (£6.0m), and his superior form too. The fluctuating defensive situation at Manchester United limits De Gea’s potential and it’s a trip to Brighton and a home match with Spurs in the next two weeks. Chris Hughton’s men have scored in six of their last seven home meetings, including the Amex Stadium’s final match of 2017/18, where the Seagulls were 1-0 winners over Man United. Meanwhile, City have already kept one clean sheet away from home against a new-look Arsenal and now have a run of matches against the six most recently promoted sides to the Premier League.

Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m) joins the goalkeeper section after his role in Crystal Palace’s win over Fulham. Not only does he have potential bargain attached to him, the Welshman’s fixtures are also very promising. After facing Liverpool at home, Palace face Watford (away), then Southampton (home), Huddersfield (away), Newcastle (home) and Bournemouth (away) in Gameweek 7.

Defenders

Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) experiences a slight rise from second to first place among defenders now that that Man City schedule look so appealing and he has demonstrated how advanced his position is at the club. The only factor that had him below Andrew Robertson (£6.0m) for Gameweek 1 was the difficulty of fixture, City away at Arsenal while Liverpool were at home against West Ham. Both players have form on their sides as they kept clean sheets, registered attacking returns and claimed bonus points on opening weekend.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.1m) has shot up the rankings as the ultimate value candidate. Despite his price rise, he is still the cheapest playing route into the impressive Crystal Palace defence, offering offensive returns and bonus points too – as Saturday’s win at Fulham demonstrated.

We’ve also allowed ourselves a second Palace defender in Patrick van Aanholt (£5.5m) considering that the left-back is in a significantly different price point to Wan-Bissaka. Van Aanholt continues to offer an advanced position and assisted Jeffrey Schlupp’s (£4.5m) goal at Craven Cottage.

Luke Shaw’s (£5.0m) goal-scoring display against Leicester City has pushed him up on the Watchlist, as another full-back offering attacking involvement.

Jose Holebas (£4.5m) is a new appearance after assisting twice and keeping a clean sheet on opening weekend. The Watford man has some short-term fixture appeal with a trip to Burnley in Gameweek 2 and a home match against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 3, before Tottenham and Man United visit Vicarage Road.

Midfielders

There were some big changes in the midfielders department. Braces for Sadio Mané (£9.5m) and Richarlison (£6.6m) see them rise into the top three, behind only Mohamed Salah (£13.0m). Both of them have Gameweek 1 form on their side as well as more appealing fixtures. The appeal of both Salah and Mané re-affirms the suggestion that doubling-up on Liverpool’s attack has serious merit.

Bernardo Silva’s (£7.5m) goal-scoring display at the Emirates Stadium pushes him up on the list of midfielders, while Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m) drops after being substituted before the hour-mark. However, in both cases, the return of Raheem Sterling (£11.0m) and Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) does mean they have to carry rotation risk as a factor.

Eden Hazard (£10.5m) is another riser following his earlier-than-expected return to competitive action, in which he provided an assist for Pedro’s (£6.5m) second-half goal at Huddersfield Town. In fact, he replaced the man he assisted in Gameweek 1 ahead of Gameweek 2. However, currently he carries just the factor of form with rotation still a risk with him after the World Cup and recent comments made by Maurizio Sarri.

Dropping down as a result of those players is Arsenal midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.0m). His performance against Man City has given him a form rating of C, and he also carries a rotation risk. However, once a trip to Chelsea is out of the way the fixtures will become a lot kinder for Mkhitaryan and the Arsenal assets.

Double-figure hauls for Roberto Pereyra (£6.0m), Ryan Fraser (£5.5m) and Ruben Neves (£5.1m) pushed them onto the Watchlist, although for now that is based mostly on Gameweek 1 form.

Forwards

As you can probably see the forwards section is looking rather bleak ahead of Gameweek 2. Sergio Aguero (£11.0m) sits at the top based on the upcoming fixtures for Manchester City, but his two-point display against Arsenal means that his current form can be rated no higher than a C. Furthermore, the Argentinian also carries a rotation risk with Gabriel Jesus (£10.5m) and Sterling both capable of playing his position against Huddersfield.

Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) was one of the few forwards to receive a large jump after his late goal at Man United. It was a busy short spell on the pitch for the England international, so with fixtures on his side in the next six weeks he may be turned to by Fantasy managers. It’s a home match against newly-promoted Wolves next, then trips to Southampton and Bournemouth in between Liverpool and Huddersfield’s visits to the King Power Stadium.

Anyone else planning to stick with Lindelof? I heard he was decent vs Leicester and was chosen ahead of Jones and Smalling.

Well Baily and Lindelöf seems like the pairing Mou will go for this season.
United is pleased with the improvements of Lindelöf and since they did not manage to buy a new central defender it looks like it's Lindelöfs sport to lose right now. Fans and staff praised him last game.

Funny how Richarlison seems exampt from a statistical approach on here. Plenty talking about not knee-jerking players like Neves, Kante etc but still lauding Richarlison as a good player to get in right away.

2 goals from 2 shots, an overperformance of 1.4 goals based on xG. A fat 0.00 donut in xA. Bringing him in is just as knee jerk as bringing in someone like Neves.

Just evening out after massively underperforming last season 😉

      1. Brosstan
        • 12 Years
        8 years, 11 days ago

If anything, such a long period of underperformance would suggest that he is a player who is a worse finisher than "the average player" that xG calculations are based on, and that his "real xG" for the Wolves game should have been even lower.

          • 10 Years
          8 years, 11 days ago

I agree he's a poor finisher. But still, there is always the chance that he's simply been very unlucky, and I'd much rather go for someone young who has tenacity and wants to improve rather than a journeyman who is content with their paycheck. The point is, he has the potential to score lots. Obviously nearly any brace is an overperformance in any one given game.

Agree to some degree but he's in a much more attacking role and has a better history of goals and assists than Neves, so slightly less knee jerky I would say.

          Doesnt really help in fantasy

There is a guy with something like -9.5 G-xG and he rarely scores and then there is a player with something like 6 G-xG and he keeps on scoring.

It probably means one is a good finisher and other isnt or something like that which wont help me to pick the right player 😮

Neves is a holding midfielder in a team new to the league and still finding their feet.
Kante is Kante, even if he might be slightly more forward than usual, he's not going to be a goal machine.
Richarlison is an advanced midfielder, and a greedy one at that who will shoot lots, playing in an Everton team that are starting to bring in some real quality and who have the best set of fixtures after Man City.

The question isn't whether Rich is a better pick than Neves and Kante, it's whether Rich alone is enough or Tosun is needed as a double up.

I hate the whole idea of the captain - has it been around as long as FPL? It makes you get the big ticket player because of the risk associated with them getting a high double score if you don’t have them and in my opinion makes the game dull because of it.

    1. MaxiRobriguez
      • 11 Years
      8 years, 11 days ago

Makes budgeting for rest of the squad more challenging and therefore fun. Also will ensure greater diversity in squads.

      1. AndyCook
        8 years, 11 days ago

I think it reduces diversity, everyone scrambles for the same players from the bargain bin so they can all have Salah as captain. It makes people risk averse with high priced players.

        1. MaxiRobriguez
          • 11 Years
          8 years, 11 days ago

But if you pick Salah you can't have other high cost players. It makes picking the right 6.5m midfielders more important, which is usually harder. For example Jota, Rich, Neves, Fraser all making their cases so far.

If people didn't pick Salah because there wasn't a captaincy risk and they could have Mane/Firminho instead, who would they pick with the additional money? It would no doubt be Kane or KDB.

          1. Pierce34
            • 10 Years
            8 years, 11 days ago

For reference, I didn't pick Salah. My attackers are

            Mane - Sanchez - Richarlison - Jota
            Aguero - Aubameyang - King

Also have three premium defenders in Robertson, Mendy and Shaw, so I'm happy with the balance of my team so far.

            1. MaxiRobriguez
              • 11 Years
              8 years, 11 days ago

But you're in the minority as 54% own Salah, primarily because people know he will be most captained week-in-week-out.

If there was no captain in FPL, more people would have squads like you. You have a £10m midfielder and an £11m striker, which could very feasibly become KDB and Kane when they get back in their teams.

FWIW I'm monitoring Mane/Firminho points against Salah. If they're spread out more evenly this season I will have no hesitation about downgrading Salah.

              1. Pierce34
                • 10 Years
                8 years, 11 days ago

Yeah I took the risk of counting on Mane to kind of match Salah, partly because of last season. What I mean by that - Mane was the one I wanted last year, but I got Salah since he was 0.5 cheaper. It was a big surprise that he dominated FPL like that.

Not sure that kind of logic makes sense, but I see Mane as a competitive guy. Not in an 'I want to win' kind of way - everyone is like that - but in an 'I want to beat Salah's goal tally' kind of way. I see a certain healthy competition between Liverpool's forwards, and I'm counting on Salah's output being about 50 points less, and Mane's around 50 points more.

captaincy is what makes the premium players justifiable for their price. and also to make rank chasing easier.

Looking for comments on potential double transfers for GW3 guys, current team:
    Pickford (Stek'berg)
Mendy, Shaw, TAA (Wan Bis, Peltier)
    Eriksen, Mane, Sane, Richarlison, (Masuaku)
    Aguero, Firmino, Zaha

Team valued raised 0.5M which I am very happy about. My original plan was to go erik - Mhki & Aguero - Auba after Arsenals tough couple of fixtures the upgrade Sane to KDB but he looks to be returning quicker than expected after the world cup.
I now think Eriksen - Alli to free up half a mil for Sane - KDB for a double transfer in GW3 could be a better option, thoughts?
I have concerns over Aguero after missing that sitter clean through against the gunners and the rotation risk with Jesus, am I fretting over nothing? Man Cities fixtures are plum and I intend to captain him again this week but I just do now feel he is going to play week in week out and is too expensive to be regularly benched. Would perhaps Lukaku be a better option? Jose will play him whenever possible by the looks of things.

Good team, no need to plan a specific transfer yet, wait for possible injuries/rotation risk. Wouldn't downgrade Erik to Alli, he's worth more than the additional 0.5 to get Alli.

      1. MaxiRobriguez
        • 11 Years

Actually, Sane is probably your major risk. Worth keeping an eye on his game time.

Your first concern is Sane for sure, but fresh injuries may well change that GW 2

I'd keep an open mind going into the gameweek, and try and not make any rash moves. Taking Eriksen out is quite risky - he'll deliver continuous points and I wouldn't be surprised to see him do well GW 2. A Sane --> KDB move would definitely be something I'd be trying to organise though. Hold on Aguero for now, unless something significantly changes after GW 2 - Auba may well become a big priority.

It's a good team at the end of the day

Is it worth a 4 point hit to get Mendy in (no City coverage at the back) and drop Aubameyang for anybody (I have King and Aguero up top)?

    My team is currently:

    DDG
    Daniels/Luiz/Robertson/Cedric/Wan Bissaka
    Salah/ B Silva/Jota/Fraser
    Aguero/Aubameyang/King

Quite an aggressive approach I realise, but had wanted to see how City did vs Arsenal before moving to a defender of theirs

This is a fair shout. Once Jesus is back and firing rotation could be a headache.
I think Mendyc ould sort himself out in time once prices catch up too.

I guess there is always the realisation that a defender will have a rogue week of 15 points and then revert to 4-6 at best. Whilst a striker can be a much better use of funds right?

sorry, what i meant is that it seems a bit like a sideways move, so i'm assuming you're considering this move because you reckon arnie will score big at home against bournemouth, so therefore in order to really maximise that bet, i'd captain arnie. basically double-down on your bet (or move)

this was the moved I had planned for before the season started and left .5 itb to do it but decided to do sanchez to sterling instead

I think King may yet come good and may have pens back given the wilson penno miss. Arnies fixtures aren't favourable so not sure it's worth it

in that case do it - my gut said sterling so went for it even before friday's team news - got to follow your gut with this game

          arnie could quite easily score

    Aguero or Mendy?
    Its Aguero in for Morata
    or Mendy in for Tomkins.

I’ve seen first hand recent photos of the site and it would be a great effort to finish by November.

Spurs will play at Wembley until the Cardiff game. After that they will need to find an alternative venue for the Man City game onwards with Twickenham a potential choice.

It puts me off Spurs players from GW10 onwards, that’s for sure.

Tough one.. Stick with Rashford for one more week or get rid of him for -4?

Arnautovic for -4 would be the ballsy movr that could make your season 😉 😉

My guess is that alot of these 'casuals' you speak of were burned by Wilson last season, similar to alot seasoned players. Once bitten, twice shy I guess.

i am talking about the people who bring in anybody scoring in GW1 ? Why was he the exception ?
