An Alexis Sanchez-less Manchester United fell to a disappointing defeat at Brighton on Sunday, though there were further attacking returns for their two Gameweek 1 goalscorers.

Pascal Gross, Glenn Murray and co, meanwhile, served a reminder of their own Fantasy credentials with a three-goal first-half blitz.

Our penultimate Scout Notes of Gameweek 2 focuses on yesterday’s match at the Amex Stadium.

Brighton and Hove Albion 3-2 Manchester United

  • Goals: Glenn Murray (£6.5m), Shane Duffy (£4.5m), Pascal Gross (£6.9m) | Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m), Paul Pogba (£8.1m)
  • Assists:  Anthony Knockaert (£5.5m), Solly March (£5.0m) | Luke Shaw (£5.1m), Marouane Fellaini (£5.0m)

While the swirling rumours surrounding Sergio Aguero’s start (or lack thereof) proved to be unfounded yesterday, the whispers about Alexis Sanchez (£10.5m) not being with the travelling Manchester United party for their trip to Brighton turned out to be true.

Sanchez was missing from United’s squad of 18, though Jose Mourinho confirmed both before and after the 3-2 defeat to the Seagulls that the Chilean’s injury is not thought to be serious:

Alexis was going to play but he had a little problem, so we had to decide to give an opportunity to another attacking player.

I don’t know really. Let’s wait for the results of the studies, but I don’t think it’s a big thing. I think it will be one or two weeks maximum.

Without Sanchez, United produced a fairly insipid performance, with no Premier League team losing possession more often or racking up as many “bad touches” as the Red Devils in Gameweek 2.

The most worrying aspect of United’s display was their defensive fragility, particularly for the 29% of managers who own David de Gea (£6.0m), the most-selected goalkeeper in FPL this season, or other members of the back four.

It took United nine league matches to concede four goals last season but they had achieved that feat by the end of the first half yesterday. This was also the first Premier League match since October 2016 in which they had conceded more than two goals.

With Tottenham Hotspur up next, FPL managers could be forgiven for reassessing the worth of their United defensive assets despite the solidity of last season, when Mourinho’s side racked up a league-high 19 clean sheets. De Gea, indeed, is already the most-sold goalkeeper of this round ahead of Gameweek 3.

De Gea wasn’t to blame for any of Brighton’s goals, but the 4.0% and 1.4% of FPL bosses who own Eric Bailly (£5.5m) and Victor Lindelof (£5.0m) respectively will be concerned about the possible repercussions of their performances yesterday – particularly with Chris Smalling (£5.9m) and Phil Jones (£5.4m) waiting in the wings.

There were, at least, more attacking returns for the two most-bought United players of Gameweek 2: Luke Shaw (£5.1m) and Paul Pogba (£8.1m).

Shaw’s assist was a little fortuitous, his volleyed shot bouncing down into the turf and onto Romelu Lukaku‘s (£11.0m) head for the Belgian’s first league goal of the season.

Pogba netted a stoppage-time penalty after Marouane Fellaini (£5.0m) had been felled; this was the second successive season in which Pogba had scored in both Gameweeks 1 and 2.

That Pogba was entrusted with spot-kick duties again with Lukaku on the field is perhaps significant, although the Frenchman’s words after the win over Leicester City are still relevant, particularly with Sanchez absent yesterday.

As mediocre as United were, Brighton put in an excellent performance that suggested yet again that their home fixtures are the ones to target from a Fantasy point of view.

The Seagulls had the worst away record in the top flight in 2017/18 and their display in the 2-0 defeat at Watford last Saturday – Chris Hughton’s side not having a single shot on target – was representative of their struggles on the road.

At the Amex Stadium, however, the Seagulls are a different prospect. No-one epitomises their contrasting home/away form more than Pascal Gross (£6.9m), who served a timely reminder of his worth as a mid-price midfielder just days after his starting price had dropped.

Thirteen of the 15 goals that Gross was directly involved in last season came in home fixtures (two assists were his only contributions on the road) and the German midfielder has begun 2018/19 in much the same vein, delivering a ten-point haul yesterday a week after his blank at Vicarage Road.

Gross racked up 24 bonus points last season and was awarded three again yesterday evening, after having won and converted a spot-kick just before half-time. No Brighton player had as many penalty box touches than Gross, who now seems a permanent fixture on penalties after having wrestled responsibilities from Glenn Murray (£6.5m) last season.

Murray, who turns 35 next month, proved there was plenty life left in him as a mid-priced FPL forward with a beautifully taken opening goal, while there were assists too for wide-men Anthony Knockaert (£5.5m) and Solly March (£5.0m). Knockaert and March’s places are at risk in the medium term from new signing Alireza Jahanbakhsh (£7.0m) and the injured Jose Izquierdo (£6.0m), but the pair’s performances yesterday will give Hughton a welcome headache.

There were mixed fortunes for Brighton’s centre-backs, with Shane Duffy (£4.5m) – who had more attempts on goal without scoring (28) than any defender in 2017/18 – finally finding the back of the net, though his long-term defensive partner Lewis Dunk (£4.5m) limped off after 20 minutes.

Speaking of Dunk’s injury, Hughton said:

We won’t know until tomorrow morning, he’s gone over on his ankle but Lewis is a tough individual and he’s not use to missing games.

Recent signing Leon Balogun (£4.5m) stands to benefit from Dunk’s possible absence, having replaced Dunk yesterday afternoon.

Brighton XI (4-4-1-1): Ryan; Montoya, Duffy, Dunk (Balogun 20′), Bong; Knockaert, Stephens, Propper, March; Gross (Kayal 90′); Murray (Locadia 90′)

Manchester United XI (4-3-3): De Gea; Young, Lindelof, Bailly, Shaw; Fred, Pereira (Lingard 45′), Pogba; Mata (Rashford 45′), Lukaku, Martial (Fellaini 60′)

    aside from shafting sanchez owners in FF.... is it not incredible that jose doesnt tell inform fans, particularly those travelling to Brighton, that their 400k week player wont even be in the matchday squad? my ar se he was injured after friday's presser in what would have been the light training session of the week. it just speaks volumes about his shadiness and the lack of any real info coming out of united about who is happy, who isnt, why he didnt get more players etc

      presumably they would have bought their tickets months ago? made travel arrangements? would be disappointed but I'm guessing not enough to miss out on the game and be out of pocket as a result?

        no its not..but you would like to know rather than being surprised at the stadium hen you read the programme that one of your star players and highest earners isn't going to play? imagine an NFL team doing that with the star quarterback? he's banging on about class this week, well that's something that lacks a little class to me.

      Agree. Did the same with Bailly early last season, no word in pressers when he was injured.

      If they're fans, they are probably aware this could happen. I'd rather my team's manager kept quiet about such info.

        I agree, it's not that unusual for a manager to say a player is injured and then magically he plays, or visa versa.

        Although Mourinho in general is really having somewhat of a breakdown.

        right so if theres no salah in the team tonight (aside from the scenes on here) you think thats ok to do? just tell fans AFTER the game he got injured?im a pool fan and id be pi ssed at that. jose as far as i can see is the only one that does this. yes managers keep their cards close to their chest and might say we have a few niggles in the pressers and leave it at that..but he will straight up not mention an injury to a player if they are injured while saying these are the only ones who are injured.

          What are you objecting to? The fact that supporters might only want to go to watch a game to see a certain player, rather than the team?

            isnt it obvious? player injured during the week or in last match...holds presser..these are the ONLY players injured and doesn't mention that player, absolutely nothing so you assume sanchez is ok, he is then in every predicted lineup (and yes the fact he is a star player makes a difference, they are more important to fans). who else does that?

              I'm guessing you own him in fpl and that's why this is a big issue for you.
              To a degree I understand that some people travel to Manchester, Madrid, Barcelona to see specifically Ronaldo, or Messi play rather than the actual team, but the job of any football manager is to help his team get an advantage on the pitch, not to please tourist supports, or fantasy football managers or the gambling community, so any information given in press conferences shouldn't be taken literally, otherwise you might as well insist they name the line up a day ahead of time, like they do in Rugby.
              Without giving you specific examples, I'm sure many managers have given misleading comments regarding player availability in press conferences.

      i'm actually a bit baffled why managers give any information about their squad before games. other than helping us, i think the main use of that information helping the opposition prepare.

      From the rules- "An assist is awarded whether the pass was intentional (that it actually creates the chance) or unintentional (that the player had to dribble the ball or an inadvertent touch or shot created the chance)."

      Don't know what they're smoking at FPL towers.

    I have the following team:
    Ederson (Hamer)
    Shaw, Robertson, PVA (Daniels, Wan-Bissaka)
    Salah, Richarlison, Mane, B Silva (Hudson-Odoi)
    Mitrovic, Arnautovic, Agüero
    I consider Mendy a must-have because of his price and relentless-ness.
    How the hell can I get him into my team???
    Thoughts welcome.

    Couple of problems for me after this unfinished GW2...

    This is how my team looks like:

    Foster-Fabianski

    Tarkowski-Robertson-PvA-Duffy-Peltier

    Richarlison-Eriksen-Gray-Mkhitaryan-Mane

    Aguero-King-Zaha

    Well, I've had 2 FT for GW3, I've used 1 already (made a Sanchez to Mkhitaryan swap), and 1FT left. Several positions in my team are a bit shaky.

    1. Option with Foster and Fabianski seems not so good for GW3 as the former face Palace and the latter goes up against Arsenal. I have Zaha as my front man so can't put Foster between the sticks. Fabianski and generally whole WHU defence look terrible after these 2 matches in the new season. I think Fabianski's can't equalize FPL performances in past seasons.

    2. Eriksen has a deeper role in the last match against Fulham so he couldn't do much with Alli and Moura as CAM. Far from it he was poor, but don't consider him as an FPL essential as a holding mid. Plus he isn't worth 9.5 m playing in that position. We need goals and assists. Also he shares the set-piece duties with Trippier and I slowly see Trip taking everything from him.

    3. A couple of words for Gray... Against MUTD he looks very solid and was considered as a good option against Wolves in the next gw, but it was not like that... By me, it was a poor game for him. See Maddison outscoring him pretty well this season, but time is upon us.

    4. And the last, Josh King. I can literally say that he is in the massive shadow of Callum Wilson. That guy did almost everything for the cherries so far and I don't know why he couldn't be in my team.

    Who do you think I have to transfer out and for who? If you think I have to make more than 1 transfer, is it worth it taking a hit obviously?

      To be fair, two of those games are for Chelsea, and one of the games for Liverpool he came on as sub late in the second half. He scored on his only start vs them playing for Liverpool.

      There's no point including Salah's stats for Chelsea.

      Last season he was on the bench at home vs Palace, and didn't score when he came on.

      He started the the other, and scored.

      Hardly the worst outcome.

      I’ve got £1m itb and might upgrade Firmino after Brighton match. Could be Auba instead though.

    A little thought exercise here.

    Do you think it is possible to to harness the keen online fantasy football community to affect prices changes?

    From what I understand, price rises are based on the net number of transfers in, within a given time period.

    So are there sufficient people who regularly follow all the online content for this to work?

    In the past I have tended to use my wildcard in one of the international breaks if possible, and have always had a final team in mind that I choose at the end of that, but use the first 10-12 days to try and take advantage of prices rises to boost my bank marginally.

    Surely, this could be taken to the extreme if the whole community were to get behind it.

    For example, at the start of the week everyone wildcards, and let’s say 7 cheap 4/4.5 players are nominated for investment. This allows space for players who have already risen in you squad to remain so you don’t lose out on their price rise by transferring them out.

    Mass investment in these players occur and their pride rises by 0.2 overall, you then sell them all and repeat the process pocketing 0.7m each time.

    Across the 2 weeks, this could be done 4/5 times potentially allowing people to boost their bank by 2-3m which would be of significant advantage, especially as the prices of higher end players who you actually want will not have changed...

    Like I said, just a thought exercise, but would be quite funny if we could band together to do something like that! (Sorry for the essay btw)

      wildcard transfers don't affect price rises

        Ah fair enough...
        I guess you can make a few 0.1m here and there if it is just you on the wildcard, but mass wildcarding not so much!

        Yeah so you do the transfers for hits then active WC on the Friday

          So it could work, but would be a little painful if you forgot to activate the wildcard at the end....

          I can just imagine people crying about taking a 150 hit because they forgot... XD

      Any attempt to persuade a large group of people, who by nature disagree frequently, to act collectively in ways that may sometimes be counterintuitive is doomed I'm afraid...

    I want AWB, but not quite sure how. Maybe Cedric -> AWB?

    Pickford Speroni
    Robertson Mendy PVA Cedric Peltier
    Salah Mane Bilva Richarlison Stephens
    Aguero Wilson Tosun

      There is more than one way to play this game and using chips could work anytime. But you optimize your chances when a player is playing twice 🙂

          gotta wait & see, league games get put on hold for cup games, CL & EL. Then those with no fixture that week need to be rescheduled. usually it's well later in the season. in the gmwk 32-37 area

      I would consider raplacing Auba with aguero based on current form, however I don't think it would be a wise move now because Arsenal have some good fixtures coming up, I am worried about Emery dropping Auba TBH ( Arsenal fan )

      I would (and did with a WC). B silva game time not certain either if that helps to sway your mind although you could say the same about mendy. I think its a risk not to have him as he's in form and his price is going up and most of your rivals will have him.

    Getting itchy feet wanting to pull trigger on WC. How does this potential team look:

    Foster
    Mendy Robbo Alonso
    Salah Mane Bilva Rich Mikhi
    Aguero Ings

    4.0 Kamara AWB Peltier

    0.3m in bank

    Transfers would be:

    Firmino -> Kamara
    King -> Ings
    Cairney -> Rich
    Stephens -> Mikhi
    Shaw -> Alonso
    Bavies -> Robbo

    I make that one big downgrade in Firm -> Kamara for at least four upgrades. Worth it ?
