The best set piece takers and targets for FPL Gameweek 3

Fantasy Premier League managers are encouraged to factor the Gameweek 3 set piece match-ups in their transfer plans in the next few days.

In the second of a new series of Members articles we assess once again where set play situations can be exploited.

Where this differs from the Set Pieces tab is that we have added extra detail on how many of each set piece has been taken so far, which players have had the most attempts from set-plays in terms of goal efforts, as well as how like teams are to receive or give away free kicks or penalties.

That way, by comparing each team’s overall set piece data to find any mismatches, individuals expected to benefit from these situations will become clearer.

We ran similar articles during the World Cup and found them to helpful to Fantasy managers, hence why we have decided to bring them to FPL.

Obviously we only have two rounds of data so far so it may difficult to find too many over-arching trends right now, but we’ll be building on this template every week for Members to use when making their transfers or deciding on team selection.

Any differences between the takers here and on the set-pieces tab are purely because that individual is not available in Gameweek 3.

What are people's thoughts on David Silva? 29 appearances last season, 9 goals, 11 assists. 5,8 points per match. He seemed to nearly always start last season when available, and played very well at the weekend.

He was amazing for me last season when I owned him. Would get him now but got more pressing issues right now (i.e. I own Walker Mendy Bilva and not Aguero)

I owned him for the second half of last season. When he played he was great. I think he is a great option. You need a decent bench back up though to cover. He does tempt me but it means dropping one of Pogba, Maddison, Hazard & Salah and none have done anything so far to justify that.

Now KDB out Bilva and Dilva will get more pitch time. Dilva more forward when both on the pitch. .8 diff in price. Thumb suck

Not own him last season because I have own Sterling (get him 7.8), Sane, Aguero, Jesus only last season.

This time because of huge price different, might be time for me choose Dilva or Bilva. Right now I make mistake choose Mahrez.

Nev & Carra picked him as their POTY on Monday they clarified it as hope but with KDB out he may get more game time has also retired from international football so no long trips away

What are people's thoughts on players from the currently 'unpickable' teams? Any bargains for the rest of the season there?

Cardiff - seemed relatively tight, shame that Peltier lost his spot
Huddersfield - Hadergjonaj OOP, Pritchard playing quite advanced, Mounie seems in favour
Newcastle - Kenedy on a lot of set pieces, Dubravka cheap and makes saves
Brighton - Playing some attractive football, Murray looks dangerous

Cardiff will be great defensively. Ignore the penalties and I still think Etheridge may be the top points scorer for 4.5m keepers.

Huddersfield have 2 players that stand out to me. Stankovic at 4m & Diakhaby at 4.9m

Newcastle have Kennedy at 5m. Although he needs to keep his place.

Brighton will also be very solid defensively. Duffy and Ryan are good options. Gross should also score a shed load of points again.

Etheridge could offer a lot of save points, and maybe Bamba is pickable, but you could easily fin d5 better options than him.

Fancy Huddersfield to beat Cardiff this weekend, Mountie could notch one or two. Wouldn’t be sold on any of their players mind you, maybe Sanka, but again, easy to get 5 betterbdefs than him.

Kennedy looks good value, might price drop now also after missed pen & red flag. Lascelles is a quality pick when fixtures improve. Dubravka 0.5 too expensive imo.

Brighton - Groß is sheer quality - a great FPL pick, fire & forget. Jaganzebash (sic) could be a star this year if he gets going. Ridiculous scoring record in Eredivisie for a winger. One to watch.

    11. Drexl Spivey

Well if West Ham qualify as currently unpickable, I don't think their fixtures are quite the nightmare we thought, attacking-wise. I'd fancy Arnautovic to score in any of the next seven, with Chelsea causing the most problems.

    12. Eze Really?

I wouldn't call Brighton unpickable - decent at home so good for rotation. Cardiff and Newcastle are relegation fodder for me and prob Huddersfield too. Therefore I expect them all to go on extended bad runs sooner or later and any assets to be liabilities. Having said that, I do have Hamer but for bench-nails purposes only.

      Cardiff - Any Defence

      Huddersfield - Hamer

      Newcastle - No

      Brighton - Defence, Murray, Gross

    16. The Rumour Mill
      • 7 Years

All of these sides have a significant fixture shift around weeks 8-10, so I'm keeping an eye on their assets for if I decide to wildcard around then.

Not seen anything from Cardiff really other than their goalkeeper.

Huddersfield - pritchard as a 5th mid could be a useful bench player/rotating starter. Whichever keeper they're playing by then would be good value also. I think Schindlers a nailed on 4.5 who would work in a defensive rotation too.

Kenedy was absolutely dreadful on Saturday, but hopefully that game was an outlier for him. Like pritchard, he would be a 5th midfielder candidate. The usual right back Yedlin at 4.5 would be useful in a defensive rotation. Their other defenders and goalkeeper i think are overpriced. And the strikers aren't consistent enough.

Brighton are good at home, but can't replicate it away it seems. But that may not matter as they rotate almost perfectly with Newcastle assets home and away from weeks 8 to 18. So a defender with goal threat such as duffy or dunk to rotate with Yedlin works well I think. Gross is of course their talisman, and at 7.0 could offer good value. Murray I think will start to be phased out or rotated with their other new strikers. And their new players still require intigration so require further monitoring.

The Newcatle and Brighton rotation btw yields this from weeks 8-18:

WHU, BRI, WOL, WAT, BOU/car, LEI, WHU/hud, CRY, WOLhud, FUL

Glad I have Duffy (though was on bench for his goal) - was picked in GW1 as a secure starter.

Not expecting much from Billing (0.2%) but at least he is easy to pick out in games...

Richie will be in the points again at some stage I feel...

Mitrovic looks a good option so far.
I fancy Newcastle options the most when the fixtures get better. Lascelles, dubrovka and Kenedey are on my watch list for a few weeks time.
Groß is always going to be a decent option

Etheridge could be a possibility in a 4.5/4.5 goalkeeper rotation if he can continue saving penalties. Sorensen was fantasy gold a few years ago - every time Stoke conceded a penalty, I thought "Good, another penalty save!". He saved about five that season. In last season's home matches in the Championship, Cardiff kept 11 clean sheets and only conceded 16 goals. So they probably won't concede much more than about a goal a game at home in the Premier League.

Gross from week 8 onwards, would like to bring Ryan in then too if I can spare a free transfer or am using the wildcard.

A Newcastle defender from week 9 could be pretty shrewd too.

I went Pedro. I don't think Mkhi is even nailed, I'm an Arsenal fan. Laca will come in and Ramsey will start, which leaves places for grabs. Iwobi and Mkhi could drop out.

Could argue the same for Pedro but he seems a Sarri high-pressing type player and has 2 in 2. Notably, Willian was subbed for Hazard, not Pedro.

    A) Ederson + Wilson

    or

    B) Foster (or other 4.5m???) + Zaha

Tough one, as Watford have tough fixtures coming, whereas Palace have a nice run.

Any thoughts on this potential trade?

Bailly & Pogba > Shaw/TAA & D Silva. (It would have to be for -4 if I did it this week).

I like TAA/Dilva move but too sidewards for -4 imo

TAA has Brighton (H) & DSilva has Wolves (A) vs Bailly/Pogba who have Spurs (H). The -4 could pay off.

First on bench this week then reassess. Feel that it could work with a 442 with Palace good run of fixtures and the value of their defenders.

Can't see it becoming a trend unless he gets injured or completely drops of form with no attacking threat which is hard to imagine at the moment.

Maybe after next week. I have Mane/VVD but I don't have any Arsenal players. If shipping out Salah I could get Aubameyang. Salah & Ings to Aubameyang + 7.5mid (Mkhi/Ramsey/Willian/Maddison). I would still have ok Captain options in Aguero/Mane/Aubameyang. Arsenal fixtures much better than Liverpool's though Salah is fixture proof of course.

Are folks considering divesting one or two Liverpool assets after this week?

Their tough run does coincide with beautiful fixtures for Everton, Chelsea, City and Arsenal... so not sure holding 3 Liverpool makes sense during that spell....

Hokey Cokey’s can go dreadfully wrong though as i’m sure we all know

    1. La Roja

Form over fixtures for me. Liverpool looking good.

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years
        5 years, 8 months ago

Very true... I’m trying to predict whether the tough fixtures will pull down their form though... they will win handsomely this weekend...

but by the time we get to GW7 I don’t expect them to have got more than 6 or 7 points from those 4 games GW4-GW7

        1. La Roja
          • 12 Years
          5 years, 8 months ago

I think the opposite. Liverpool will score lots of goals this season and against Chelsea City Arsenal who don’t park the bus, I can see them scoring 6-7 goals over 3 games. Which means points for Mane and Salah most likely.

          1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
            • 14 Years

Wanted to get rid of bilva halfway into that arsenal game until he scored a screamer. Did nothing in a 6-1 thinking of Huddersfield. Do I really need him in my team with sterling, sane, Silva and mahrez all fit to play? Does mkhi offer greater value or he is just but another rotation threat. Tempted by this tf the only problem being that I have 0 ft.

If you're watching him and he doesn't pass your eye test then why not transfer him out, its better to trust yourself. Having said that I wouldn't get rid for a hit!

If you already own a player and he is playing I also wouldn't worry about rotation until it starts happening, bit risky making a transfer decision by trying to guess a future decision of a manager.
