The best set piece takers and targets for FPL Gameweek 3

Fantasy Premier League managers are encouraged to factor the Gameweek 3 set piece match-ups in their transfer plans in the next few days.

In the second of a new series of Members articles we assess once again where set play situations can be exploited.

Where this differs from the Set Pieces tab is that we have added extra detail on how many of each set piece has been taken so far, which players have had the most attempts from set-plays in terms of goal efforts, as well as how like teams are to receive or give away free kicks or penalties.

That way, by comparing each team’s overall set piece data to find any mismatches, individuals expected to benefit from these situations will become clearer.

We ran similar articles during the World Cup and found them to helpful to Fantasy managers, hence why we have decided to bring them to FPL.

Obviously we only have two rounds of data so far so it may difficult to find too many over-arching trends right now, but we’ll be building on this template every week for Members to use when making their transfers or deciding on team selection.

Any differences between the takers here and on the set-pieces tab are purely because that individual is not available in Gameweek 3.

What is the one move you decided not to make before GW1 which you are pleased with?

For me it was the rotating 4.5 goalkeepers. It is a strategy I usually go for an in yesteryear had Grant and Randolph. Foster and Patricio looked great value but set and forget in Ederson has proved himself already with a CS & bonus and then an assist.

Is there anyone I should consider bringing in for Eriksen? I don't trust any of the City midfielders yet (although D. Silva would be great if I know he'd get consistent starts), Mkhi isn't really doing it for me either (I'd prefer Ramsey if I had to go with someone from Arsenal) and I don't see Pedro being nailed., while Pogba is just meh. I've already got Salah, Mane, Richarlison, Fraser as my other midfielders. Pretty certain I'll stick, but is there anyone I'm missing out on?

I consciously started the season with a strong midfield in a 3-5-2 and have done really well over the first two game weeks, so I'm not going to start restructuring the team just yet. I'm just a bit uncertain about Eriksen since his upcoming fixtures aren't great.

      2. Why are left backs doing so well?
        Kered

So I saw Ginkapo's Hot Topic and thought I would chime in with my own opinion/realization on defenders (specifically left backs)

So, why are left backs doing so well?

In my opinion, I think it comes down to a few things...but I really think it has to do with the fact that most attackers are right footed. (hear me out)
Now although this is just a theory I came up with, and most strikers are good with both feet, most have that preferred foot they score most of their goals with. Now... When a cross is coming in at extreme paces, it's much easier to stick a foot out and deflect it on goal (Mendy > Aguero for example) and why not make it easier on your attackers who are more prominently right footed who instinctively want to use that foot to score?

Now, this also works both ways.. So you have your left backs pushing forwards, usually this is happening from both teams when they attack (not always!) but teams with a similar logic in mind, will want to keep their RB in a position to cover the opposing team from pushing from the left side.. Meaning RB position does less attacking so they can keep up with the runs of the LB all game.

Keep in mind.. That this is just my opinion, others may think I'm out to lunch, but surely there is some valid reason as to why managers use their left backs to attack much more than Right backs. I have other reasons in mind due to midfielders position etc but I won't get into all that..

Where I disagree with Ginkepo, is when it was mentioned that heavy hitting defenders may not offer as much value Per Million.. Now, I wouldn't say Toby is better value than say Mee, but the difference lies in the attacking potential of the outside defenders playing as wingers...

As we saw a prime example for Man City this weekend, David vs Goliath, Huddersfield had no right to score.. But they did. But there's Mendy, a 6.0 (now 6.2) defender scoring 8 points and could've had another 4 +3 bonus had they not went to sleep. Arguments both ways would say the value isn't worth the risk if even the best teams could let in a goal, but it's the attacking threat of basically a midfielder for a budget price of 6.6 or less that has the chance of getting an extra 4 points for a CS instead of a mid who only gets the extra 1 pt.

Is the glass half empty or half full? You decide.

I think it's more about leftfooted defenders being better. Since most people are right footed they can't get to the required level without a minimum competence in rightfootedness. That ambidextrous feature gives them a subtle advantage against a mere 'dextrous defender.

The sad RB, who only has basic leftfooted competence, has to compensate by offering the space on the outside for the LWB to exploit.

Not necessarily, because that makes no difference to a RB or LB defender.. If the left back is left footed.. And right back is right footed, why would the left back be any better?
I understand your logic about the defender defending him, but a RB should be trained to defend against a Left footed cross and vice versa for a Left Back defender

            1. Woy of the Wovers

You're assuming it's only about the cross. But in a straight HtH the only response that RF has to LF''s left foot is to stick out his clumsy left foot. Balance is all wrong as that's the standing leg.

It's in overcompensating for the leftfooted weakness that the alternative route down the wing becomes easier.

I guess where I'm going with it is that when a right back is training defending.. They are side stepping to the right, where as the left back is side stepping to the left. So I'm just saying they are trained in defending crosses from their position.

I'm not saying you don't have a point, I'm just saying I think its more from the outcome of the cross and less from the lack of skill from the RB

N, but yes. It's as simple as the right/left handedness statistics and there are a lot less good left footed defenders/wingers. Hence, Ashley Cole.

But that doesn't necessarily equate to goals, why are the right backs not doing as well? It's not much different, I find the right side tries to cross higher in the box (for a right footed shot) , where the left back can cross it across the face of goal area, for a right footed deflection or higher in the box for a shot.
I dunno, just my own theory I came up with from watching alot of football I guess!

Might have a point however I'm tempted to suggest it could be a coincidence due to the talents of Mendy, Alonso, and Robbo all being active at the same time. Out of top 10 defs there are 5xLBs, 3xCBs, 1xRB, 1xOOP. Out of top 20 defs there is only 1 additional left back (PVA).

Will be interesting to see how this will change after more games.

"Is steve cook a left back?" - not sure why it didn't click initially but the the dots finally connected on this question after seeing your post, cheers

Definitely, talent plays a big part for sure. I'm just offering a somewhat logical explication for why there are more assists/goals from the left side, giving the strikers and attackers some credit for getting on the end of their crosses.

I personally don't think it's that the LBs are better than the RBs but more a nuance of the game. I play a lot of football. When in midfield it is easier/more natural (as a right footed player) to play to pass out to the left wing.

I have played RB and LB many times (and CM fwiw) and have always noticed you get far more involved at LB.

Definitely, 100% agree with that. Where I mentioned the midfield plays a part also, I have similar opinions on the build up and also the way right wingers/mids attack the net or the end line, making RBs a bit less useful in attack (Willian or Pedro for example) not needing the RB

Another possible reason may be that walker and azpilicueta have also played cb so they are used to staying back more, allowing mendy and Alonso to attack more

            • 8 Years

This is the reason - usually in a four man defence the fullback not attacking will stay back, almost always have done - but these teams have a clear better attacking option on the left so it makes sense to use them more.
My theory on left backs possibly being better at attacking in general starts at academy level (maybe even before), when a player is left footed they get played wide almost by default, usually at LM - they then develop skills that the right footed defender doesn't - just my theory. Lots of left backs are failed wingers, lots of right backs are failed/undersized centre backs

add in the popularity of right-footed LW/inside forwards even a decent left winger may find himself at left back (as the only left sided player in the team)

Read my comment below, it's not just the teams with highly skilled left backs that are playing this way. It just seems that most managers prefer crossing from that side or using that left back more than the right back for tactical reasons

Some of you I have noticed are saying that the skill of the LBs may be better than the right backs,

I don't doubt that some of them may be very skilled, but look for yourself in the members area. Compare every teams left back to the right back of the past 2 games (yes even the smaller teams like Brighton) and without giving too much away.. it is an astounding difference. It's not just from the big teams where left backs are being more utilized than right backs.

I'm just giving my opinion as to why I think that is, I'm trying to think of it from a managers tactical perspective and not from say a logical perspective of a players individual skill.

Sadio sane makes a good point above also since most central players are right footed i think that it will be easier and more natural to pass to the left when they’re facing forward and to pass to the right when they’re facing backwards, making the rbs stay farther back and letting the lbs get farther forward more.

As for the point that you made about crossing, I think that it depends on the forward. For instance morata preferred crosses from azpilicueta on the right since he was more comfortable heading from crosses on the right. I’m not sure which side most forwards prefer it from though

I think the cut-backs from Alonso could increase similar to his description of Mendy. Sarri stated he's not going to have Chelsea play exactly how he managed Napoli, and this could be one of the few differences, is allowing Alonso more freedom down the left

Nothing technical to add, but for many years I've noticed that my fantasy teams seem to collect a preponderance of left backs. I don't think its anything new this year.

Bearing all this in mind, should I captain Matty Taylor?

Matty Taylor, a legend but not so much as Aleksander Kolarov. Is David Silva right footed because he rarely passed it left.

i just think it has to do more with the personnel in the team. when one wing back goes fwd, the other should stay back and give cover to the central defenders. now the teams mentioned all happen to have more attacking LB's than RB's. But you can also have the opposite. Bellirin goes fwd a lot more than monreal (inspite of monreals great attacking output last year), Dani Alves at Barca a few years ago, Valencia vs young at United and even Walker vs Delph last year.

„surely there is some valid reason as to why managers use their left backs to attack much more than Right backs“ - but do they really? Are leftbacks really that more attacking? OK, so we have our standout picks in Alonso, Mendy and Robertson. But what about the other teams? PvA has WBA, Shaw has Valencia who was 'historically' very attacking, even Mendy has Walker who was the league’s top 3 attacking fullback at Spurs, and is Azpilicueta that inferior to Alonso?… Holebas vs Jaanmat, Monreal vs Bellerin, Daniels vs Adam Smith, Davies vs Trippier, Chilwell vs Pereira, Bertrand vs Cedric, Baines vs Coleman - is it really that clear that most managers see more attacking threat in these leftbacks rather than their rightbacks? Maybe it is, but the argument surely needs more evidence to back that assumption.

I notice that you aren't a member, but if you were you would be able to check out every teams heat map. You would be suprised.. I have done my research, making my claims not an "assumption"

No, I'm not a member, but even if I was one it's still on you to make your claim a strong fact-checked one. Because for me, and that's subjective, a) it doesn't pass the eye-test on a large scale of the whole league, and, objectively, b) it doesn't really pass the test of the hard evidence statistics (assists, goals, points) - but even if it does (does it?), I bet on the difference not being that significant. Regardless of the heatmaps... who, I believe, can sometimes, and many times, show the rightbacks' superiority.

I have a hard time agreeing with you, this is a game of fine margins... And if certain positions have a slight edge over other positions in a similar price bracket I would rather take my chances on that player.
I wasn't going to give out members information because if I did this likely would have been a members HT and you wouldn't be able to read it.
I'm not forcing you to agree with my opinion because in reality that's all it is, that's all we all do on here anyway isn't it? but for what it's worth I do my research before I post something on here, and if you don't find it helpful than just ignore it.

          Hypothesis:

There are fewer football players who are plainly left footed. They are often preferred on the left side, either as left back or as left winger. Most left footed players who have a flanking potential have tried both these positions. Hence, being played both as back and as winger gives them more experience in attacking phases, and when they end up as left backs they will have more to give going forward, and for FPL that means attacking returns.

          Sounds plausible?

Of course, others have mentioned similar to this also. That definitely plays a part in the quality of the attacks going forwards from the left backs

          Interesting observation.

My theory is the fact that the modern LW is typically right footed. This means the LW tends to cut in on his right foot or put in swinging crosses. He tends to move more inside than hugging the touch line. What this does is then create space for the LB to exploit which means he can get further forward and exploit the space in behind. Conversely, there are fewer RW that are left footed because naturally, there are fewer left-footed wingers out there. Which means it doesn’t quite have the same affect on the right wing. Teams that do have left footed players on the RW, have more space for the RB to exploit.

If you look at the case of Mendy, Robertson, Alonso, and even someone like Marcelo this would make sense. Sterling/Sané, Mané, Hazard, Ronaldo are all players who like to cut in on their right. It creates space for their very attacking left back partners.

It's a little surprising that he's not been fielded as much given his WC rest and his form last season, but something must be up in training that's tingling Pep's spider-sense about fielding him.

Such a shame if he won’t. I like him as a player and I’m afraid it could really dent his confidence with the World Cup and not getting chances at City. And he really needs confidence to fight his way into consistent XIs with their squad

Hello, Tornado, meet Pep’s wheeeeeel of rotation.

I actually think David Silva is/could be a good option, but he surely can’t be considered nailed...

I Think most people have 2-3 City already and are looking to get in on Chelsea/Arsenal assets instead of doing a hokey cokey between city’s flavour of the week picks

I think, especially given the fixtures the next few weeks, a 60 minute Silva (or Aguero) can do enough damage in that short period to be worth the perceived "risk." Assuming they continue to score bags of 'em for the next few GW anyway.

              Agreed.
In my case I already have 3 and I don’t think it’s worth the transfers + downgrade to fit him in.
But I can see why others with the funds and 2 city players would opt for him.
Time will tell, but his PPM could be excellent with those fixtures - even only playing 60 mins as you say

full steam ahead with them flying forward so called defenders.
Nice team! No salah could actually work ifaguero keeps on hauling and is not rotated. Also, Mane so far has matched salah.
flexible team too, the only thing is that risk of benching the wrong ones from time to time.
3-5-2 / 4-4-2 / 3-4-3 (and the rest) you got all angles covered i'd say

looks solid! most flexible squad i've spotted on here lately.

thing is, i personally hate having such depth in squad as i usually end up benching a good amount of points.
Truly winds me up, i hate hrowing out rotten food because of over shopping, as much as i hate benching lots of points.
My bench usually picks itself with a 4.5 and nasty cheap cannon fodder

I'm also unsure here. Bennett had played 2 versus 1 for Peltier. Bennett maybe but also unlikely.

Sorely tempted to put the great Man City midfield conundrum to bed by doubling up on their defence and Kun up front. Mandy - Bernardo Silva - Kun are my current City 3.

Mandy is looking so solid at the moment Shotgunn - with Otamendi lurking I was thinking Ederson as the second defensive coverage (albeit as GK). Bernardo Silva doesn't fill me with confidence offensively. Great goal against Arsenal but I'd rather have Mkhi for .5m less.

Agreed as a Sterling owner am thinking the same my move to Sterling has already cost me 50 point behind in mini league

        Pickford (Hamer)
        Mendy, Robertson, PVA, Shaw, Tomkins
        Mane, Richarlison, Bilva, Jota, Cairney
        Aguero, Auba, Zaha

        2 FT, 0 ITB
        Thinking of doing
        Bilva - > Mkhi
        Jota - > Kante
        Shaw - > Alonso
Ofc it would cost me - 4

        Thoughts?

It might be, just thinking about rotation. Also worried about Auba as my only cov for arsenal. But Jota to Kante and Shaw to Alonso?

Im thinking about benching David Luiz for next week against Newcastle because I believe Tripp can get some attacking returns. Any suggestions who to bench instead? Been burned for leaving 39 points on the bench in gw1 and benching Mitro in gw2.

        Kepa
        VVD, Trippier, Mendy
        Salah(c), Mahrez, Richarlison, Fraser
        Mitrovic, Aguero, King

Shipping King and Mahrez the week after for Hazard and Kamara.

Tosun and Jota to Kante and Aguero worth it for a hit. Or should I just do Jota to Dilva?

        Already have Mendy and Bilva.

I captained Aguero but next one is away match and I expect Jesus to play more away and Kun home. Sterling should akso start soon. Dilva if his hand injury is no problem.

I will wait. If Laca and Auba start they both should do most of the scoring. Mkhi may assist the assister more. Bilva was unlucky not to score.

I view having a wildcard in the same way as a trapeze artist having a safety net.
More likely to risks when the safety net is in place, but once the net is removed the mind is focused and the moves become more precise.

Have pulled mine already 50/50 whether needed or not, but in a season where we do not need to worry about the transfer window I see less reason to hold onto it.

So even if I am happy with my team I should use the wildcard so I focus more on my transfers?

Sorry this is nonsense, my "good" team now can be a disaster in few weeks as you never know. This is when I'll need my wildcard.

Thought I will have a discussion here, shame.

Yes, I tend to agree, it's good to re-structure the team early. Also a really early WC can help one stay ahead of price rises.
