Fantasy Premier League managers are encouraged to factor the Gameweek 3 set piece match-ups in their transfer plans in the next few days.

In the second of a new series of Members articles we assess once again where set play situations can be exploited.

Where this differs from the Set Pieces tab is that we have added extra detail on how many of each set piece has been taken so far, which players have had the most attempts from set-plays in terms of goal efforts, as well as how like teams are to receive or give away free kicks or penalties.

That way, by comparing each team’s overall set piece data to find any mismatches, individuals expected to benefit from these situations will become clearer.

We ran similar articles during the World Cup and found them to helpful to Fantasy managers, hence why we have decided to bring them to FPL.

Obviously we only have two rounds of data so far so it may difficult to find too many over-arching trends right now, but we’ll be building on this template every week for Members to use when making their transfers or deciding on team selection.

Any differences between the takers here and on the set-pieces tab are purely because that individual is not available in Gameweek 3.

How can you expect them to take a question like this seriously? The manager is brand new to the EPL, and his team has won their first two matches, so you can expect him to leave it alone. On the other hand, you're asking about Hazard, who should start every match..but then again, why change it if its working?

I haven't done any calculations but saw an article today where the break even point was 280 points. If he gets more, article said he was a must own. If less, there are ways to get the upper hand over non Salah owners (avg captain score was set as a mediocre 7)

If Mane keeps firing and other options like Auba/Hazard/Kane come into play, I'll be the first one to take Salah out.

Mane has scored 2 open goals and an offside goal so far and isn't on penalties, he won't outperform Salah all season imo. Ditch Mo at your peril!

He will be on penalties when Milner is off the field and that could happen at any stage with Hendo and Fabinho about.

Don't agree with this sorry, still think Salah would be ahead of him in the pecking order, depends on game situation as well if we are winning big anyone could have it, key moments and Salah is your man. Shouldn't impact either as a fantastic FPL option!

I'm not saying ditching his is the way to go. Right now it'd be too risky but perhaps gw7/8 for Kane? Who knows what'll happen in between.

Salah is by no means must own given his price tag. There are many ways to play the game. I'd say only player who everyone should own is AWB 🙂

I own both Salah and Mane. I wouldn't consider getting rid of Salah. He's too good of a captain option.

Salah will score more points than Mane but Mane might be better value.

Yeah. Most do. Also ownership comes into play. It's scary high, haha. Given most will have him, it's valid strategy to have him only to 'block' others, expecting that you gain ground with your better decisions with rest of the budget.

One of those “open” goals was actually a very good goal that he managed to get himself with the ball in the position he did. Give credit where it’s due rather than playing down a well taken goal.

Is not as simple as that.
If you captain him when he hauls against weaker teams and have a great alternative captain pick in the tough matches then he could easily be worth way more.
With a player like him value is fluid, not fixed. If you get more captaincy decisions right than other rivals then his value is worth more to you.

I had already noticed this by watching the two games but even by looking at the stats is kind of dramatic how little Bernardo Silva has created.

The true Silva has created more chances in one game(actually in only 63 minutes) than Bernardo has in 180 minutes. Pretty sure he's going to be dropped by Pep very soon unless he turns it around.

I didn't say he played badly but he hasn't really created much for a creative player. When David was on the pitch it was a completely different thing.

Mkhitaryan has created more chances too and i have both him and Bernardo in my team.

              1. No, his role is to be a deep lying centre mid. Of course he will be creative but obviously you mean creative in terms of chances created and goals.

You do realize Gundogan was the central midfielder, right? You're talking about Gundogan, Bernardo has always been a winger by nature.

Lol, when they were on the pitch at the same time Bernardo was wide with Mendy being the designated crosser overlapping him, and D. Silva was more central. Of course he wont get much creativity in that role. he clearly was intended to just keep the ball rolling.

Bilva is a class act but only scores one of every ten goals City score when he's on the pitch, and he has the same 1/10 ratio with assists. He's not a good FPL asset.

      1. Frank Black
        • 12 Years

Yeah, this. He plays very well with the others but he's not very involved in the most dangerous situations; it seems like he creates more chances for those who actually creates more concrete chances/assists.

Therefore not an amazing FPL option.

Wow you found some animosity. He stays don't compare too well with the other creatives in the team. Not sure if he'll be dropped on this basis as I think Pep has slightly tweaked his system this year without KDB and Sane. It looks like the full backs are creating more and the attacking play is flowing less centrally and through wingers. The defenders acting as wingers now.

The demise of Bernardo Silva has been so ridiculously overstated.

              - He's a rotation risk! > No, he's not. He's probably the most nailed on City midfielder and has performed well.
              - He's too defensive! > No, look at the heat maps, he's playing wider with Silva in the team, but if/when Silva gets subbed off, he moves into CAM. Last game, he had 3 shots, 2 on target and was extremely unlucky not to score.
              - Mkhitaryen is just way better! > Mkhi did look good and I do want him, lots of shots, looked dangerous etc, but we still don't know how he fits into Arsenal when they play weaker teams. Maybe Lacazette gets a start and he's much less influential. His fixtures are also worse than Bilva's over the next 3 games. WHU car new is worse than wlv NEW FUL.

You can make better transfers than this one.

                - He's a rotation risk! > of course he is! You have no evidence to suggest he is 'most nailed'. Centrally he has competition from David Silva who is a fantastic player, and possibly Mahrez. On the right he has competition from Sterling and Mahrez too. To say he's nailed is nuts after two games

He can be rotated, the fact Pep played him RWB is alarming enough.

He's good, but the value is with Mkhi right now.

Anyone else disappointed with Aubameyang so far?

Thought he played poorly against Chelsea.

Next few gameweeks are crucial for him.

If he scores either tap-in you wouldn't really be saying that.

Much better to have chances and miss than not be involved at all.

He should have scored easily...everyone saying how Chelsea was such a hard fixture, but in reality he had plenty of big chances and simply choked them. You’d expect him to put those away at 11.0 million.

Ho-ho cheeze! His home record at the end of last season was really good, and although it was Laca who scored a brace against WestHam then, GW3 will be the best possible opportunity for Auba to break free.

He could and even should have 3 goals against Chelsea. Have you seen (excl. Aguero) an attacker with more clear cut chances in those 2 fixtures? I doubt. He missed, but he is still 25-30 goals scorer per season.

He should be putting those away. The chances were there, regardless of who he was playing and he didn’t score. Hes looking very out of form. I’m sure he’ll get going eventually though. Just disappointing to see such horrible missed chances. Aguero buries those easily.

Aguero had all the time to put a one on one away against Cech too and didn’t. So he doesn’t always “bury” them easily either. It happens.

Whole team are lacking in confidence, making them all look poor. When they string a few passes together they started looking a bit better. Could have easily scored a hat trick, missed three guilt edged opportunities. Keeping him for now.

Why would they drop Fraser? Scoring goals and assists, massively attacking (with Brooks), getting forward, looking lively.

As far as I’m aware, the only time’s he didn’t play last season was when he was injured.

Is there more of a price panic this season?

Surely unsustainable how folks are being extra knee jerky (hits, WC etc) just to "try" keep on line with the price movements...

Eventually you will fizzle out as the price changes continue to be very frequent

What to understand? Price changes seem to be more frequent and drastic at the beginning of the season due to more active users that fade as the season progresses. Would rather get a -4 now to own a player that will probably be worth 0.2 mil more in a few days.

Not after 2 weeks. People transferring in flavour of the week players to catch price rises and 3 weeks later whinging that they have to sell them because they've done nothing. Get players who will get you more points than those you're selling, not because kneejerkers made his price increase in a particular week.

Best time to think about it I would say, I will hardly even notice the price changes later in the season when my team has settled. The lack of midweek games also makes early transfers more viable.

I really don't care about it. If you pick the right players, you will get price rises automatically.

Also, if I get like 5 rises and 1 drop, I don't care at all. You can't win them all. I have a TV of 100.8 despite keeping King.

                Zaha's touch heatmap is insane.

£7m could be an absolute steal if that's anything to go by. Early days of course, but it shows his intent on where he is going to play. Right down the wing and into the box.

Mendy, Robertson and Mane have been massively impressive but looking at where they have the ball compared to Zaha they've not been anywhere near as invasive.

Didn't even know this tool existed - very informative (if somewhat potentially misleading).

Seriously? Have you even watched any football this season? Those players I've listed have probably been the most attacking players (down the wings) so far.

Classification of position is utterly nonsensical in this comparison - I'm talking about a £7m forward (budget) at a mediocre team and how he is influencing games.

Be 'polite' and condescending all you want - stats are representative of what has HAPPENED and an indication as to what has a high chance of HAPPENING.

Seriously, what a way to misunderstand what I was on about.

Completely missed the point. Well done.

right now not that important, come the fixture crunch in December its more so
there is some benefit to having a stronger squad as you can rotate them around fixtures.

personally i wouldnt have any more than 0.5m in total over base prices sitting on the bench

Personally don't think it's very important if you have mostly nailed players.

I'll be looking at someone like Kante though now that we know he's gonna play more box to box.

Wan Bissaka is a gift from the FPL gods as a bench boy.

Would never have a 5.5+ player on my bench though.

Has this habit of being rubbish in some games, and brilliant in others. Needs better consistency to be considered an option. I dont think he starts once Laca plays, as Auba will occupy that LW berth.

but you have to think it wont be long before the more established players muscle their way in, ramsey & laca are not starting as well.

Might even be Morata who drops out. The problem is we do not know what Sarri will do yet, it is still very early days. Likewise with Emery and Aubameyang as an option.

Not so sure about that. Sarri is set on his formation and has some good fortune already.

Can't see Morata being dropped after that performance v Arsenal.

Sarri is a top coach, I don't think he is so narrow minded as to set up the exact same way as with Napoli as he has different player profiles at Chelsea. Saying that Hazard fits the Mertens profile perfectly and Willian playing on the left is very interesting considering how he has always played on the right.

Mertens only came to play as a striker because Milik got an injury and they had no other strikers to replace him. He turned out great but by pure accident. Don't see Morata dropping out of first 11.

Morata is very much in Milik's mold. And Pedro, Merten's. Although it took injury to Milik to move Mertens up top, Sarri persisted with it, even when Milik returned, and he never looked back. He likes quick, technical players who press from the front and Pedro, from his Barcelona days, is perfect for that. He understands Sarri's system perfectly. And I sense Sarri really likes him. Hazard's nailed on to play left forward, in that Insigne position, and Willian is far better suited to that right wing-forward, the Callejon position, which leaves Morata out in the cold, because there's no way Sarri plays Hazard at the head of a midfield 3. He doesn't play that system. He plays too box-to-box mids and a play-maker at the base, Jorginho.

Which is to say that I think the options moving forward, for value £to£ Chelsea players are Alonso, Kanté and Pedro

I have Salah and Mane - but the Salah math is starting to bother me. Salah started 2017 at 9m, and climbed to 10.6m by end of season. Having earned 303 points, it meant that, by the end of the season, Salah had 28.6 points per million. This year he has started at 13m. In essence his starting price has gone up 22.6%. However, for Salah to provide the same effective value as last season we should be expecting 13 x 28.6 = 372 points this season (ignoring any price increases), which is a consistent 10 points per game over all 38 games. This feels highly unlikely to me, and I suggest that his ownership and price will drop over the season as the value/price differential becomes apparent. Any thoughts?

You are paying 13 million for the best asset in FPL history, even in a game in which he played terribly against Palace he got 9 points. He is also top of the xG chart and has underperformed so far.... he's going to be a beast again it doesn't matter about the value for money as if you captain him often, which we all should, then he will easily be worth it! On for about 250 points minimum this season imo.

Maybe it was an anomaly. If he gets 250, he wasn't worth it.

303 was an outlier. He doesn't need to match that ppm for value, although still a fair point in general

Maybe not 10 per game but having his type of consistency for cpt option alone is worth the 13

Obvious answer is if you paying 13m for one player, then you need to be captaining him most weeks. If not then you should look at how spreading the money elsewhere might benefit the team. Can't see Salah matching last season's total but he will still haul in easier fixtures. I think the key is selling him at the right time but also having a plan to get him back in if he hits form and has good fixtures given his high ownership.

I get that - I think my point is that he is only correctly priced if he scores 300+ again this year. If last year was an outlier (which it statistically was) like MTPockets mentioned, then at some point that will become apparent and his ownership/price will start to drop.

                              Poor stats.

It’s not about being the same value as last year as last year he was grossly under valued.

It’s about wether he would be still good value at 13m if he hit the same points as last year. In which case he would still be great value.

Weeell. Yes. If the overall scores are the same. At the moment, the top players are scoring very highly indeed. I don't have Salah and I don't really feel I'm missing out even though he's scoring well. The reason I'm not super high was the decision to drop Richarlison late on. I feel I've made the right call with Salah (as it stands) but I do think I will have him at some point. I have a pile of cash waiting if I feel the need to jump.

                                This.
Comparing his points per million last year isn't relevant, as he was clearly outperforming his price - and thus it wouldn't be fair to expect the same kind out value. You need to look at whether he will be worth having this year.

I had him in from the start, as I expect him to hit at least 250 points this season. At 250 points, he is right around the gray area, where I would consider him good value.

As Smurf says above, it also comes down to whether or not you are able to captain him at the right times.

My question is not about whether to have him - I'm questioning if his price justifies what he is likely to return. The reality is, objectively, you have to accept that his price at the end of the season reflected his value. I get he may have started under-valued at 9m, but that's only from a view point at the end of the season looking back. He had 38 weeks to grow in price based on his performance, and by the end of the season his price was 10.6m, as priced by 5.5m managers, which must reflect the market's price of his value. Therefore, if the market valued 303 points at 10.6m, then he must, by definition, be overpriced this year?

Just because he didn't rise further (in ownership and price) isn't doesn't necessarily mean that he wasn't worth more than 10.6m. Obviously he was worth much more than that, as he broke the all time FPL score.

The lack of further transfers in and following price rises can be explained by 2 factors imo.

                                    1) a lot of dead teams didn't get him in
                                    2) a lot of active managers thought it was "too late" to get him in and felt that he was now too expensive at 10.x, when they could have had him for 9m.

A very small data sample after 2 Gas, but he is outscoring his PPM from last season. And he hasn't looked completely sharp to be honest.

Again, I am not saying that he is a must have, but I am saying that your way of thinking whether he is worth the price is wrong (imo).

If he can deliver 275 points this season, he is worth the 13m - especially given the fact that we most of the time will captain his hauls.

Fair enough. But I still think that he'll end the season priced closer to 12m than to 13m. I'll bookmark this so one of us can say "I told you so" at the end of the season...

Salah was way undervalued last season. Let’s take Kane for example...thought to be the best forward in the game the last couple seasons. He ended the season at 13.1 and put up 217 points....16.56 per game. So if we use him as a benchmark Salah only needs to put up 215 to be of similar value. I’m pretty sure he’ll put that up +40-50 more. His value as the top scorer in the game is second to none.

Interesting reading, but IMO as soon as Salah posts a big score (which could conceivably be GW3) this debate will be dead and the narrative will be back to whether Aguero is a rotation risk.

                                This.
Although I had some thoughts about Aguero the weekend which I may have posted once too often and which all the kind, caring folks on this forum gently pointed out to me...My working assumption at the moment is that the managers need to maximise points and goals in the opening 4-6 fixtures before Champions league starts. Therefore, barring injuries or obvious fatigue, they should be starting with their best players until then. I'm betting (and it is a gamble) that Aguero will start at least 4 of the first 6 fixtures if he's fit...

BSilva still a very good asset. One GW does not change that.

I am still in the Bilva camp. He will play the majority of games while KDB is injured IMO. And if he is on the pitch he can contribute.

Not saying BSilva is a bad option, but ignoring Mkhitaryan alltogether is rather foolish. He's been Arsenal's most creative player so far and their next 10 fixtures are as good as it can get.

                            Auba v Hazard comparison.

Last season Auba played mostly central, only later when the confidence of Laca was down, he was played wide- still generated but not as good as when he played in the middle. He doesn't attract BAPS as much as Hazard.

On the other hand, Hazard generally struggled, was sometimes played upfront which didn't suit him at all, played different system and this season he will most definitely play on his preferable LH side and same as Auba. He is also 0,5 mil cheaper, will play more than 75 mins and is a better BAPs magnet than Auba and I feel he could deliver this season under Sarri.

                            Any thoughts?

Hazard all the way. I think he will have the best season under Sarri. Arsenal is not settled yet, they're not in form and goals will be spread between Auba, Laca, Mikhi and others. Hazard easy choice for me.

Yeah, I am thinking that the best value from Arsenal is in fact Mikhi. He is on set pieces with Ozil, has had a decent start to the season, he is important to them on that RH side.

Auba is nailed on if that is what you're worried about, and he had something like 3 goals 2 assists in 4 games out wide when played there, as well as quite a few in pre-season.

I have noticed that Willian had so many great opportunities and entered the box so often, he just can't finish and hasn't got Hazard's attributes. Haz will explode in this system and if he won't score, he will create. Nice fixtures too. But I do get your points.

Auba is a natural goalscorer. In his last 6 seasons he always scored more than Haz and there's nothing to think it is going to change. Even when he played on the wing he still could score. Last 3 seasons 92 games / 79 goals. Hazard in his all 7 years career in Chelsea scored 69. (league only stats)

Did he score more points though? If he would be nailed in the middle, I wouldn't think twice.. It's defo harder from the wing.

He used to play in St. Etienne on the wing just before Dortmund transfer. He scored 19 goals and 13 assists in that seats half of them from the right wing, but of course it is hard to compare. He also used to play last year at Arsenal on the wing. 4 games 3G +3A.

Yeah, hard to compare French league and FPL. They play WHU at home and have been known as a bad away team. After WHU they play twice away. Cardiff and Newcastle won't be easy games.

Salah plays "on the wing" too...
