The Captain Poll is now open for votes ahead of Gameweek 3 and you can watch our video on the best candidates for the armband below or on our YouTube channel.

The early favourite is, not surprisingly, Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) who faces a very appealing home match against a Brighton side, who are notoriously poor on the road.

The Seagulls shipped nine goals in two league matches against Liverpool in 2017/18, four of them at Anfield in Gameweek 38. The Egyptian netted in that match and provided the assist for Dominic Solanke’s (£5.0m) 53rd minute goal too.

His case is, of course, strengthened by being Liverpool’s biggest goal threat against Crystal Palace on Monday night, even if he only managed two assists in the end.

Sadio Mané (£9.8m), owned by 31 percent, should prove a strong alternative candidate bearing in mind he is a must-have option for the 45 percent of Fantasy managers who do not own Salah, and remains ahead of him for both goal tally and FPL total score.

Either way, Liverpool assets are expected to dominate the captaincy debate this week considering that West Ham were the only top flight side to survive relegation in 2017/18 with more shots conceded on the road than Brighton.

Sergio Aguero‘s (£11.1m) hat-trick against Huddersfield on Sunday will naturally give him some backing for the captaincy this week, as Manchester City prepare to travel to the Molineux.

Wolves may have allowed fewer shots on their goal than any other side so far, but the fact that have still conceded four goals in two matches suggests there are areas to exploit for the reigning champions.

Aguero might be at slightly more risk of rotation this weekend but we will, as per usual, wait and see what emerges in the press conferences later this week.

After four assists in just two matches, the highly-owned Benjamin Mendy (£6.1m) is an option for a second week running. In fact, he finished third in the poll behind just Aguero and Salah for Gameweek 2.

After West Ham’s performance at Anfield in Gameweek 1 and a defeat at home to Bournemouth in Gameweek 3, Arsenal assets might also be worth looking at. The favourites there are expected to be Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.0m).

Meanwhile, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur’s meeting at Old Trafford reduces the appeal of a few usual suspects, namely Paul Pogba (£8.1m), Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) and Alexis Sánchez (£10.5m) for the Red Devils and Harry Kane (£12.5m) and Christian Eriksen (£9.5m) from the north London outfit.

    What's the better plan?

    A) Bailly > PvA, Cairney > Kante next week
    B) Roll the transfer, Cairney + Salah > Hazard + Mkhi

      B imo.

That's tough. I can definitely see where you're going with B. I do think the combination of Hazard and Mkhitaryan will outscore Salah and Cairney but if Mo smashes it against Brighton you'll find it difficult to go through with it.

Yeah pretty much. And Salah will almost certainly do well against BHA. Can't see how he doesn't haul in that one.

I think rolling the transfer is correct either way. If I don't feel like doing the bold move, I can just do the two like for likes a week late. It at least gives me that option for B.

With Brighton's away record being so poor and Aguero having just scored 20 points, how are people approaching the decision to captain either Salah, Mane or Aguero in Gameweek 3?

    Salah - BHA (H) - £13.0m - 54.5%
    Mane - BHA (H) - £9.7m - 32%
    Aguero - WOL (A) - 11.1m - 40.5%

    Key Statistics:

    - Mane might have outperformed Salah so far but the Egyptian has had nearly twice the amount of attempts and exactly double as many big chances, arguably offering more goal threat than the Senegalese forward.

    - However, the pair have both registered the same amount of shots on target and attempts in the box.

    - Whilst both players have very similar assist potential, Mane's involvement has been considerably higher (more touches, more touches in the final 3rd and more passes received).

    - Aguero has now scored 9 Premier League hat-tricks. Only Alan Shearer has scored more.

    - Despite Aguero having two more attempts and two more attempts in the box, his overall goal threat is very similar to Salah's over the first two Gameweeks.

    - Wolves have conceded the least amount of shots in the league so far this season (City travel away to play them this week).

    - Liverpool beat Brighton 4-0 at Anfield and, more impressively, 1-5 in the reverse fixture.

    - Salah registered one goal and two assists across both fixtures despite not playing the full 90 minutes in either game (subbed off in the 80th and 84th minute respectively).

    - Mane missed the away match and only played 74 minutes against Brighton at Anfield. Klopp played Solanke up front with Firmino in behind for this fixture, perhaps limiting Mane's involvement on the left.

    - However, Salah managed to score and assist from his role on the right wing. Mane didn't do either and was up against Scheletto who started at right back for Brighton...

    - Aguero scored 15 goals at home and 6 away from home last season. Interestingly, he registered 5 at home and 15 on his travels the season before.

    - City scored the same amount away as Liverpool scored at home last season (45 goals).

    - Andrew Robertson registered a goal, assist, clean sheet and three bonus points when Liverpool hosted Brighton at home at the end of last season.

    Conclusion:

Considering Liverpool's goal threat, head to head record and Brighton's away form, Salah and Mane are probably the two best captaincy options for this week.
It is important to note that Brighton will be buoyed by their brilliant performance against Man Utd on Sunday, using groups of up to three/four players to close down and intimidate Utd. Whilst this was both courageous and effective, Utd played poorly and Liverpool will be far better at escaping the press before hitting Brighton on the break if Hughton decides to use this tactic again.
Putting statistics aside, Aguero has probably proven himself as the most consistently explosive player in FPL history. Taking this into account alongside his performance last week, exemplified by Guardiola in the post-match, it is perhaps best to acknowledge that we do not have a large enough sample to take stats such as Wolves's shots conceded tally seriously. Whilst they might be the best newly promoted side, they could easily be dismantlement in the same way Huddersfield were last week.

Rotation is always a threat to any manager who owns a City asset but it pays to be brave as Aguero captainers found out at the weekend. Mane might have some statistical edges over Salah but the fact remains that last year's Player of the Year has had more shots and better chances to score those shots with so far this season. Across another two Gameweeks, the returns for each of Klopp's men could have just as easily been switched and I sincerely doubt Firmino will keep off the score sheet for much longer.

Given the popularity of Liverpool and City players this season, ownership and overall rank are already playing a part in people's decisions. It is perhaps likely that dullards will captain Salah, mavericks opt for Mane and casuals choose Augero given his massive haul. I was lucky enough to captain Mane in GW1 and Aguero in GW2 but have actually found myself tempted by Robertson this week. One must always remember that whilst he recorded 18 points in this same fixture last season, he did so directly opposite Ezequiel Schelotto for 90 minutes.

I'm also captaining Salah but everyone plays the game differently. Players who've had a bad start and who are aware that Salah will be the most popular captain will be more likely to consider Mane and Aguero in order to have an edge and improve their rank.

You should question why you think he's worth 11m in your team if you can't captain him at home against HUD.

It's not about the result. It's about the thinking. If you don't trust your 11m forward against HUD enough to give him the armband, maybe you don't value him enough. The thinking persists beyond this week. In two weeks, will you captain Aguero?

You know why most of us didn't captain him. I explained it below. It's not because I didn't think he was the best option. But regardless, in a week with 2 popular captains, it's better to own both than just the one you captain.

I've never understood the if you don't captain him you shouldn't own him thing. If the player hauls you'd much rather be a non-captaining owner than a non-owner.

We all know why most of us didn't captain him. Not because we didn't think he was the best option, but because of that Jackson tweet 8 minutes before deadline. If you want to make fun of me for that, that's a different issue altogether 🙂

I keep hearing that statement repeated but it's an over simplification of a complex topic.

As far as I understand the most effective way to optimise an FPL team is to pick all the best value options and then distribute your remaining funds by upgrading where possible to maximise your total return even if that means that some individual selections no longer represent value.

If your squad size was not limited it would just be about value, but your squad size is limited so the argument that a player over £x is only value if you captain them x amount of the time is true in a sense but not a sound strategy.

In my opinion you need to isolate a captain decision down to a very narrow question. Who has the greatest probability of achieving the highest score. Whether it's correct to have that player in your team as part of your high level strategy is a different question to be answered at a different time.

Brighton wont even attempt to press Pool they will sit deep in fear. Man Utd was a different game because they attack so slowly with too many side ways passing so even when Brighton got caught out with the press they had plenty of time to get back in defence. Against Pool you don't get that chance as they attack so fast therefore teams are less likely to press.

This time last season Pool had Coutinho to create opportunities against the defensive teams, hence why they bid for Fekir but that fell through so not sure what there plan B is this season. Shaqiri is another fast attacking player who they bought instead of Fakir and Keita/Fabinho are good counter attacking players. Pool could struggle more this season against well organized defensive teams. Once again they look better suited to the Champions League.

Personally I think those two trades are a little bland and almost sideways.

I’m looking at King > Ings and Bernardo Silva > Mkhi to cover Arsenal attack/good fixtures whilst also making funds for PVA > Alonso next week. Wan-B is enough Palace cover in defense

Not the most inspirational of transfers, but I see what you are getting at. Your team is good, you don't want to change too much.

Maybe just shift Patricio for another 4,5gk and bank the transfer? Maybe Joe Hart or the guy from Cardiff (despite fixtures, I can see him get a lot of saves)

Bravo is out for 6 months so Ederson's backup is likely to be some 20 y/o kid. What price do we expect him to be, 4.5?

Yeah makes sense, else it would mean we're just one injury away from a nailed on 4.5m City def.

mkhi only cuz of naildness. both their fixtures are great but I am a Chelsea fan and I don't want the worry of having to wonder if hazard or willian is going to bench pedro eventually. go with Alonso if u can afford

Best indicator is to sort by minutes played and start at 4.5 price and increase the price untill you find someone with 180 minutes.

Brought in Bilva last week after the De Bruyne injury. Peps lineup on the weekend as already made me regret it.
    My team is
    Foster (Fabianksi)
    Mendy, Luiz, TAA, (Boly, Bissaka)
    Salah, Mane, Richarlsons, Bilva, Hughes.
    Aguero, Morata, (Madine)
Is it crazy to take Bilva out for Mkhi after one week?.
My reasoning is Madine and Bissaka won't play, Leaving Boly Vs ManC. My only sub. Slightly worried Bilva, TAA and Morata might not start. So don't want to be left with 9/10 starting players. My other option is Boly for a 4.5 but not sure who to.

    Best option?
    A. De Gea/Bertrand -> Mendy/4.5 keeper (any suggestions? Have Fabianski already)
    B. Bertrand/Arnie or Zaha -> Mendy/Neves
    C. Bertrand/Lucas -> Mendy/5.8 mid

Awful start to the season, tempted to rage-wildcard, please convince me to hold...0.6itb, 0ft unless I pull the WC trigger.

    Pickford - (Fabianski)
    VVD - Mendy - Sakho - (Dunk - WB)
    Mané - Ozil - B. Silva - Neves - (Stephens)
    Auba (C) - Aguero - Arnautovic

Only thing stopping from shipping Ozil is the next five arsenal fixtures, but he's next in line if he doesn't perform in GW3.

Going against the grain here and suggesting you hold it. I think you stay patient with Özil and get a jump on him as a differential. I’m most concerned about your defenders, with WB suspended and Dunk coming off injured. You’re not far from a respectable team. If you must make another move, take a hit. WC is too powerful, and your spine is solid.
