    Choose one:

    A). Keep Firmino.
B). Replace Firmino with Wilson for -4 hit.

I've noticed that a lot of teams are looking more and more similar this year. Obviously managers who are newer to the game ("Casual Managers") tend to select teams based on their real life performance (Kante) or following an unlikely haul the week before (Neves). These kind of players (especially MUN players) end up wth huge ownerships ("Casual Picks").

FFS has helped me and many others immensely, and there is more information and opinion on this site than I will ever have time to look through, which is great. It does however make it even more painful when a Casual Pick hauls, sending Casual Manager ORs soaring, and mine plummeting.

So I wondered how often people actively select players based on ownership? This is only very slightly different to picking a player that everyone else has picked. It picking a player because everyone else has picked them. Salah was a good example of this last year, to the extent that if you didn't captain him and he picked up points, you tended to get a red arrow (well I did at least). United defenders were a good example of this as well given their huge ownership.

Having a bit of time on my hands, I tried to put together a team based purely on ownership. This is a team that in theory someone with no knowledge of football let alone FPL could select by looking at one stat (overall % ownership). I have tried to pick the highest owned players where price allows.

Now obviously some of these players have been subject to early bandwagons and are more popular than they were to begin with, but my understanding is that most of these players have an ownership in the same ball park as before GW1. This is the ultimate template team right now:

    Pickford (Speroni)
    Mendy Tripper TAA (Daniels AWB)
    Salah Richarlison Mane Neves (Kante)
    Aguero Zaha Arnautovic

This team costs 99.7 today and 98.6 before GW1.
I have selected Salah as captain in GW1 (which most did) and Aguero as captain in GW2 (which I think most did?). I have made no changes or transfers.

    Total Points: 188
    OR: c.18,000

Just to be clear, this is not my team! I do have a few of these players, as do most of you. Unfortunately for me, this ultimate template team has outperformed my team despite my efforts to put together a well balanced squad and select the best players each week.

What are your thoughts? Is the wisdom of the crowd infinitely greater than many of our efforts to manage our way to greatness? Should we all just pick who everyone else is picking? I hope not.

Yes agreed and I hope thats the case. I remember some discussion last year about ghost teams sailing past many active managers, I think it was around the time of salahs haul in blank GW 35(?).

Very interested to see how many points this yields come the end of the season.

I think there's some truth in what you say but the people who win are the managers who spot the differentials, juggle rewarding bandwagon hops and are insightful enough with their captaincy picks.

Template teams will serve you well but it's utilisation of the chips and transfer management that will often be attributed to the best managers in the game. I mean, you can't overtake someone if you both have the same team/make the same transfers/captain the same players.

I think most of unfortunately aren't expecting to be competing for 1st place.
Getting a top 5K is most people's goals. And you can definitely get that by going with a template team.

          1. JohnnyMagrinho
              5 years, 8 months ago

I get that, and I wasn't saying that everyone is vying for top spot. But just apply that logic to a ML. If everyone has the same team...

The point I'm making is you'll need to make transfers, be wary of price drops/hikes, look at fixtures, have a plan for WC, know when to use chips efficiently etc...

There's more to it than just building a template team and leaving it. You have to be able to adapt to some degree. I find it very hard to believe a zombie template team would be able to compete with an actively managed team in the context of a ML come the end of the season.

Besides, template choices change throughout the season. The template for GW2 is not going to be the template for GW22.

Ah I completely agree. Didn't know we were discussing a zombie team.
I'm just saying it has it's merits following the "wisdom of the (educated) crowd" a big part of the season - even when it comes to MLs. You are very unlikely to have the same 11/15 players even if more teams are following a template core. Then you can catch them on good captaincy picks, smart differentials, good strategies and the best chip management.

                I think we agree 🙂

This is in theory a zombie/ghost team but what if you took this team and transferred in the most transferred in player each week, by transferring out the most transferred out player you own each week (as much as possible)? I suspect your OR would do fairly well, but you would probably lose out in active MLs

There was a team some one put up on Twitter that without any transfers would have won FPL last year.

We can intellectually analyse all of this but ultimately if you pick the players that score the most points then you do well

Yeah we seem to be saying the same thing.

You'll definitely see similar players in competitive teams but some small changes.

Hard to really judge at GW2 as a lot of managers are scoring highly after judging it correctly.

140 points at this stage is probably a low score, but if you average 70 a week you'll be in with a chance of winning the entire thing.

Absolutely, and hence this team would currently only be 18,000 OR. To many though, that would represent a very acceptable rank.

For me the whole point of ff is to have fun and take risks... not going to get anywhere following the crowd.

For example i have salah but not mane, however i am willing to take the risk for now and see what happens.

I do enjoy others opinions but think the decision has to be yours at the end of the day otherwise it simply isnt your fanatsy football...

Also, I think your statement "my understanding is that most of these players have an ownership in the same ball park as before GW1" underestimates just how much the ownership of some players in your template team has changed since GW1.

Thanks for pointing these out. With salah as captain the team would have scored 12 points less and have an OR of around 65k. Much less appealing.

As I mentioned below unfortunately I don’t have access to ownership from pre GW1 and it was just meant to be a fun way to see how a well owned team would have done in the first two weeks. I understand that some players have had bandwagons (AWB for example) but his points are not taken into account.

As below, if this is a GW1 template, KDB should be in there, not Mane, which would further lower the points return given there is a 26 points difference between the two.

It's no surprise that a template team will do fairly well. It's a fairly template league.
As long as managers are choosing as many starting players as they can afford from 'the big 6' and then filling in the rest with value picks (zaha/arnie/richarlison etc.) scores will always be fairly similar. Because these players are consistent 'set and forget' picks and even though experienced fpl managers may rearrange according to form and fixtures, you can never really tell when a player will haul. Ghost ships will continue to sail past because they have good players in them.

I suppose if you could track the top 10k teams (maybe using something like fpldiscovery) and try to pick their most common/ template team and captain their most common player every week, you could end up with an extremely high rank. I'm guessing within top 500 would be well within reach.

Is the difference this: anyone can track who is being transferred in and out each week in real time on the main site, so that is easy to copy. Following the top 1000/500 is more difficult and unless you know who is being transferred in that week, youre a week too late always.

Well I have exactly 188 points myself with only 6 of the players you posted. Not sure if that makes me template or not!

I don’t think the crowd necessarily have collective wisdom and there is an element of bandwagoning going on, but on the other hand I do think the more ‘hardcore’ players on here occasionally are guilty of overthinking.

I’ve seen many times people on here trying too hard to find the ‘hidden gems’ that the casuals would never think of when in actual fact, the obvious choice was the better one. It happens with captaincy too, especially last year with Salah. Casuals would just perma cap Salah while many of us on here would study the data and go by fixtures, swapping between Kane, Sterling, KDB etc instead of the most in-form player in PL history.

This method would be more relevant if the template team was selected BEFORE GW 1. My guess is that the template team before GW 1 would look vastly different.

Yes, that was my intention and I thought that most of the players selected had high ownership pre-GW1 anyway (tripper, kante, salah, pickford).

You have set up a team that looks far better than a template team simply because you are intelligent enough to recognize bad options at a whim.

The general template team included De Gea, KdB and Firmino. Why are they not in your template team?

Price. Firminho was in the team as was DDG, but both had to be downgraded to the next highest owned player because the team was too expensive. Having DDG would have been the more informed pick, Pickford has 4 points.

KdB is not in the team because his ownership is below the others. The midfield is the top 5 most owned in the game.

I appreciate that this would have been a much better exercise had it been done just before GW1, and then we could check in and see how the team performed after a few weeks. But I don’t think there would be many (any?) changes. Certainly not to the starting 11.

KDB should be in there ahead of Mane. Their ownership percentages have roughly reversed since the start of the season.

Mane is a clear outlier though, as his ownership was low compared to say Eriksen. Also, KDB had 28% ownership at GW 2.

That this team has scored well is hardly surprising as many on there have high ownerships because they have scored well. It is a self-fulfilling prophecy. It's no different to noticing that millionaires tend to drive more expensive cars than the population as a whole. It doesn't mean that if you buy an expensive car you are likely to become a millionaire.

Thanks, I’ll try put together a more accurate GW1 template and then transfer in/out according to popularity and see how that team would have done after a few GWs once more experienced managers have had a chance to make their mark on the OR. Should be interesting.

Also my silly decision to bench richarlison in gw1 has prevented me from an even better start.

Never ever ever buy a player based on ownership if you are serious about FPL.

            my main diff vs template
            - Salah, Zaha, Arnautovic
            + Auba, Fimino, B. Silva

Its hurt me first 2 weeks as Auba/Firm failed to deliver but at least Salah has not exploded in that time. I believe Salah ties up way too much money and I expect to be able to exploit this in the long run.

At some point I may be forced to reverse this but it will be my decision.

Interesting but problem is assuming most of these players have an ownership in the same ballpark as gw1. AWB Mendy richarlison Mané neves and aguero have been some of the biggest bandwagons in first 2 gws, would guess 3/4 at least weren’t in gw1 template.

Another common philosophy is to stick top only those players who are currently flying high in the respective positions' points totals, budgets allowing. This is not necessarily the same as sticking to those with high ownership, although the two tracks can be closely related

I have always wondered how much value there is trying so hard.

My wife has had a team for four years now. I'd helped her before but she's totally given up this year so I did auto pick in gw1, left formation and captain. I'm leaving it alone all season. She's 1.9m. That's top third in the world. Mid table in our work league.

I suggest you read this superb article on the matter:

            https://fplacademica.wordpress.com/2018/07/25/vorp-value-over-replacement-player/

It really opened my eyes to how ownership works, and influenced my GW1 selection. The key for me was this paragraph:

"If you build a squad made of highly owned players, you will likely perform around the average of the weekly gameweek score. If you are at the average, and subsequently hovering around rank 50 out of 100 every week, it turns out that your overall rank will keep rising every week, and you will end up close to the top by the end of the season. I wrote an article about this in details on my personal blog. The simulation I did there showed that if your average weekly rank is 198 out of 500 teams, by the end of the season you will rank 14 out of 500. This is because you won’t be missing out on highly scoring players like Salah or Kane for example, because you will own these players, as will most of the league. This is what FPL managers refer to as the risk of missing out on a highly owned highly scoring player."

Great article, cheers. So its what we expected: having a template team will serve you very well (probably better than most average managers), but if you want to do really well you're going to need to optimize

No worries 🙂 Yeah exactly. Using a pure template team will get you by the end of the season up to about the top 170k, if we extrapolate out his simulation of being 14th out of 500 by the end of a season and use a figure representative of all of FPL, say 6 million teams.

Getting higher than this requires optimisation, and this is where the skill (and risk) comes in. I think this season, as the article alludes to, there were fairly obvious areas that optimisation could beat the pre-gw1 template by doing a small amount of pre-season research. Mendy over Otamendi was one. Mane over Firmino was another. Robertson over Trippier a third.

As the season goes on the data collected from stats becomes more relevent, as its from a greater sample size, and this can become a good way to optimise over the template too. There are other methods aswell. But be careful. The only way succeed over the template is to select players that you believe will under-perform and replace them before others do. But that is risky, because you have to be right; if not (and if they do continue to do well) the majority of templaters will destroy your rank with their template teams. But secondly, even if you do get that right you still have to find an alternative that performs at least as well, otherwise you make up no ground on them. You have to get 2 calls right in other words, whereas the template players only have to get one call right (= following the standard picks).

Haha cheers, its simple in theory, fiendishly difficult in practice, and I'm not particularly brilliant at it either lol. But there's plenty of scope for all of us to learn and improve 🙂 Thats what keeps me playing every year and is a big part of the enjoyment and addictiveness of the game for me!

FFS and all the other scout casters have been creating a template.. Just type FPL into Twitter and you get hundreds of tips all looking similar and suggesting the same few players.. This season more then ever people are just copying these and hence why we end up with some many templated teams.. FFS are doing no favours by releasing all their teams in advance too, so you know for example by copying Joe's every move you will safely end up with a good rank.. boring yet effective and more people do this now..

Could it be that people are just taking FPL more seriously now? I had someone tell me the other day that FPL was the ultimate networking tool at work - a complete leveller so to speak.

Agreed that there is so much information available on this site and others which can help you get a good rank. It still takes a fair bit of dedication and the further into the season we go, the harder it will be for people who have made a few poor decisions to keep up.

After being burned heavy by not picking slags early on and then never picking him I have decided to do just that at the beginning of the season. Pick all the popular players so I’m not left behind. Then as the weeks go on to use ffs and the community to be the difference. The worst is being left behind and always chasing!

Anyone considering Holebas? Solid attacking stats, on corners, Watford’s defensive stats are impressive, and his discipline issues weren’t as bad last year. Fixtures aren’t great but rotates well.
          Any thoughts?

Looking at fixtures and playing position, surely Schlupp is by far the better choice for that price.

Higher chance of CS & plays further up the field without the risk of yellow cards/red cards.

I think Holebas is a very, very temperamental player in a team that is definitely inferior to Schlupp's.

                  And a follow up question;
If I got Holebas (or other sub 5m) who would you choose to downgrade between Coleman and PVA for GW3? The other will become Alonso in GW4 (this is all about my way of getting Alonso in)

I think Everton and Palace will both concede this week/are equally likely to concede.

In my mind PVA is better going forward than Coleman. Combination of how PVA plays compared to Coleman and how Palace play compared to Everton.

Schlupp is probably OOP on a temporary basis but even still, I see him as a better option short and long term over Holebas.

Got hit by Mahrez and King price drops... hopefully they get something done finally. I really don't want to WC them out after these.

Besides the obvious two assists for Pereira, Pereira or Chilwell and why?

Interesting team, I like it - though Salah and Mane both look preferable to Firmino at the moment. The team looks primed for a 3-4-3, and as such you don't need Neves really - I would downgrade him to a 4.5 for the bench (Stephens or Westwood) and spend the change on an upgrade elsewhere. (Eriksen to Mane is tempting but I don't think Eriksen will stay quiet for too long)

Eriksen/Firmino to Mane/Zaha, leaves a good amount of cash left over too

                pickford
                TAA Azpi chilwell
                Richo DSilva Mkhi Erik
                Mitrovic Aguero Firmino

Maybe 3-4-3 , If you have free transfers, you could consider Mane, Ings for Erik, Firm. They arent a bad pick, just not yet in fpl form.

i was really tempted to get him, but he trolled me a lot last season, and with Pedro being 4mil cheaper, scoring goals and so far looking likely to be nailed, i decided not to get him and got an Auba-Aguero front line instead, if Pedro turns out not to be nailed or Hazard scores more than Auba or Kun in the next few weeks then i can always bring him in with with 2 transfers in a few weeks

Is it common for TV of teams to grow so fast? It's only GW3 and the TV of the most valuable team is 101.9 already! Was it a similar story last year too?

most valuable teams are mostly jokers who don't care about points and just transfer in every player who is rising everyday so that they get a chance of being mentioned on FPL homepage.

It seems like everyone is going for the same few, select players. In years past it seemed like it was more spread out. That may have something to do with it.

Just went to ad break with the 'coming up after the break' Brighton after back to back to victories not getting credit they deserve says Hughton.
What! so I rewinded, sure enough that's what he said.
Then they did a Sky sports ad for this weekends game live on Sky - they were last weekends games.
Somebody been on the sauce . (not me I may add)

Tricky one. Huddersfield more chance of a CS but not by a huge amount and if United keep a CS it will likely be because De Gea has kept them in it with a lot of saves. They have beaten Spurs 1-0 in all previous home fixtures for 3 years and wouldn't surprise me if they did the same (I hope not as a Spurs fan though)... so De Gea for me.

Kepa (New A) or McCarthy (Lei H)

Both have similar clean sheet prospects... leaning towards McCarthy because I feel Leicester will get a few more chances and thus more save points for McCarthy.

I think Chelsea will hold out for a clean sheet against Newcastle so Kepa for me

Neves if on bench as he's most likely to score big against lower teams... or maybe even go for guendouzi and save the 0.5 mil

Is there actually anything to justify captaining Salah over Mane this week, besides ownership numbers?

Aguero is the chosen one 😉

Yeah, Salah is a much better finisher than Mane based on last season

Emery: We are working on different situations tactically. In the first we are playing with four at the back, then we have two and one, and one and two. With two and one, it is like a 4-2-3-1 and one, two, is for a 4-1-4-1 or a 4-3-3.

Would indicate to me that against the weaker teams he is looking to invert the triangle in midfield. Could see Ramsey getting a start then with Torreira/Guendouzi competing for the holding role.

Have to wait a little longer for the Lacattack
