Fantasy Premier League managers have been presented with a much more clear-cut captaincy discussion this week, but there’s still plenty to analyse before the Gameweek 3 deadline.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) is the stand-out candidate with Liverpool hosting Brighton and Hove Albion, while Sergio Aguero (£11.0m) is his main competitor.

However, there are, as ever some interesting differential candidates worth looking at.

We’ve gone over the results of our most recent poll and the underlying data to help you pick the best one once again.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

It is Salah who runs away with our Captain Poll for the second time this season. As of Saturday morining around 16,000 Fantasy managers had cast their vote to give the Egyptian a 48 percent share.

However, even though a home fixture against Brighton is considered just as appealing as the Gameweek 1 hosting of West Ham, Salah should fall well short of the majority he enjoyed for the first weekend of the season.

49.74 percentage points separated him and Gameweek 1 runner-up Aguero two weeks ago. This time around the gap is much smaller, the Manchester City man’s 22 percent backing trimming Salah’s lead to just 26 percent.

There are two main factors in why that change has occurred. The first is Aguero himself, who has emerged as a much stronger candidate than was initially expected following his Gameweek 2 hat-trick against Huddersfield. No player in the league has had as many shots on goal as Aguero and this week he travels to face a Wolves defence that has already been breached four times. The only thing that tempers Aguero’s appeal will be rotation once again. While he has now started the last 15 home matches that he was fit and available for, on the road in 2017/18 Gabriel Jesus (£10.5m) featured from the beginning more times than him, 12 starts to eight.

The second factor has been the form of Sadio Mané (£9.8m), who has outscored Salah in both Gameweeks so far and has matched him for shots in the box (six) and accurate ones too (four). So it’s no surprise to see the Senegalese international in the running for a third-place finish in the poll this week, with eight percent of the votes.

Expected to run Mané close for third place is Arsenal’s main man Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m). He is also around the eight percent mark ahead of an appealing fixture, this week at home to West Ham, even after blanking in the first two outings of 2018/19. Those backing Aubameyang may well be members of the Salah-less 45 percent who are worried about Aguero’s place in the Man City side.

Benjamin Mendy (£6.2m) completes the poll’s current top five after continuing his fine start to the season against Huddersfield. The Manchester City defender has four assists in his first two matches and has touched the ball in opposing final thirds more often than anyone else in his classification.

Is Shaw to Alonso for a hit too knee jerky? Got Stephens on a bench and full squad without injuries and most likely to start...

Considering exactly the same thing... head says it’s not worth a hit but the aggressive FPL Manager in me says roll the dice, Alonso looks great for a clean sheet against Newcastle and any attacking returns on top will more than cover the hit.

I’m gonna leave it until tonight to decide... but if Alonso looks like rising in price before tomorrow, I think I’ll take the hit.

Any hart owners worried that Heaton is on his way back to fitness, if they carry on conceding surely his place is at risk..

Is it worth doubling up on Trent and Robertson as a double Liverpool Defence? No mane

As a Hart owner I'm just worried.

With Pool defence, they have the best record after two games, but with those tougher fixtures to come I don't think its a good time for a double up.

Heaton played in EL last night, so yeah I'd be worried.

I loved the xG table! That's the type of content I want to see.
However, I'd like to see it here as well, combined with the overall shot statistics, and with a stronger focus on the team/player matchups of the upcoming gameweek.

I think they need 4 gameweeks of data first.

I guess that's a valid reason, two gameweeks is a very small dataset to base any concluding evidence. However, I guess most people are aware of that, and from the xG article earlier today, there's still a lot of interesting things to notice (eg. Wolves xG conceded).

Yes, don’t worry they will be back. We’ll see what we can do for the Gameweek 4 content but the ‘last four GW’ tables will definitely return for Gameweek 5.

Not madness, no. They’re fixtures are great no doubt but there are still question marks surrounding their squad, new manager, new tactics, etc. I was tempted to buy into Mikhi because he could represent very good value at his price, but again, I can’t be fully confident so I’ve avoided them all for now

Seriously considering triple captaining Aguero at home to Newcastle next GW. Sensational record against them (14 goals and 3 assists in 12 games) and hasn't been called up for internationals so won't need to be rested. Got to be better than A.Carroll 12 (15/16), Aguero 27 (16/17) and Kane 9 (17/18).

    Thoughts?

I almost triple captained him when he scored 4 or 5 against him a few seasons ago. I was put off by people telling me to wait for a double gameweek. I've waited for dgw every season since it was introduced and it's always been a disappointment. Go with your gut.

I love that. I might go for it. Ballsy but the DGW was such a let down for me last year. Top teams are coming to the business end of a lot of different cups and they often don't let their top guys start both. Maybe Tottenham will if they go out early but Liverpool and City must be resting, surely.

I have eleven of your squad (no Hamer, Tark, Mkhitaryan, Wilson) and am considering downsizing on Liverpool assets as their fixtures turn.

This may prove resistible if their form continues.

Having Wilson/Ings doesn’t give you much flexibility for change up front.

    Repost:
Of the vast raft of players to have dropped in value, who is best to keep a hold of and retain in our teams?

    I'll start with Lacazette:
    - good pre-season form,
    - Arsenal will be attacking more in next set of fixtures over next few weeks,
    - Aubameyang tends to go left to accommodate him playing through the middle.

Ben Davies for me, not even considering getting rid of him at the moment. The clean sheet will come for spurs and probably unfortunate to get no attacking returns. Not so worried about Rose for time being with his no minutes and transfer rumors about him heading out.

Mane has to likely be worth a goal and assist + bonus
Mahrez has to likely be worth at max; a goal or assist and subbed at 60-70mins?

      Tarkowski -> Tomkins
      King -> Wilson

I'd personally keep Tark unless you ever feel you'll double up on Palace defenders. 5 of the next 6 for Burnley look appealing nad they've historically been tight at the back.

        King to Wilson makes sense.

really in a fix had a bad start on a Wild Card sadly, some tips would really be great,
    A: Mkhi, McCarthy GK, Hughes
    B: Bsilva, McCarthy GK, Westwood
C: Fraser, Ederson GK, Hughes and use the .5 to upgrade Bennet to a 4.5 def?

im thinking of triple captaining salah this week in protest against the rule that allows red carded defenders to have goals against them when not playing

Template that seems to be forming includes:

    Mendy Robertson Alsonso AWB

    Salah Mane Richarlison

    Aguero

    That's 8 players...thoughts?

That's not actually my team although I have 6 of them...I was just looking at what the general template that seems to be forming based on what I am seeing here...

I have 4.5m goalies from the start, although didn't pick too well - Fabinho and Patricio.

Looks to match what most people have or want to have on here. Trippier & Firmino have very high ownership in the game as well though,

Only Salah, Mane, and AWB (bencher) for me.

Yeah Trippier is the alternative I think for one of the other premium defenders.

Firmino is highly owned...will need to produce soon though or that will change quickly, especially with cheaper alternatives scoring well.

That must feel good...I had 6 from the start, I couldn't get on Richarlison because he traumatised me last season! And I don't have Alonso either.

Fraser is another one who's close to being template.
Mendy rotation and Richarlison returning to his form of missing 40 shots in a row will change template.

Give it a game and you can gauge the likes of Laca, Morata etc for the potential of a straight swap

I'll stick with Firminho this week. I really like the ideea of Morata because of fixtures.

he has played really well in the last 2 games, making the goals by his work rate and movement. sadly a lot of them movement has been deeper than a striker should play( it works for Liverpool due to the unique way the 3 combine, firm and man more mid and salah striking)

he should be attacking more so id say 1 more week at least 🙂
