Fantasy Premier League managers have been presented with a much more clear-cut captaincy discussion this week, but there’s still plenty to analyse before the Gameweek 3 deadline.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) is the stand-out candidate with Liverpool hosting Brighton and Hove Albion, while Sergio Aguero (£11.0m) is his main competitor.

However, there are, as ever some interesting differential candidates worth looking at.

We’ve gone over the results of our most recent poll and the underlying data to help you pick the best one once again.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

It is Salah who runs away with our Captain Poll for the second time this season. As of Saturday morining around 16,000 Fantasy managers had cast their vote to give the Egyptian a 48 percent share.

However, even though a home fixture against Brighton is considered just as appealing as the Gameweek 1 hosting of West Ham, Salah should fall well short of the majority he enjoyed for the first weekend of the season.

49.74 percentage points separated him and Gameweek 1 runner-up Aguero two weeks ago. This time around the gap is much smaller, the Manchester City man’s 22 percent backing trimming Salah’s lead to just 26 percent.

There are two main factors in why that change has occurred. The first is Aguero himself, who has emerged as a much stronger candidate than was initially expected following his Gameweek 2 hat-trick against Huddersfield. No player in the league has had as many shots on goal as Aguero and this week he travels to face a Wolves defence that has already been breached four times. The only thing that tempers Aguero’s appeal will be rotation once again. While he has now started the last 15 home matches that he was fit and available for, on the road in 2017/18 Gabriel Jesus (£10.5m) featured from the beginning more times than him, 12 starts to eight.

The second factor has been the form of Sadio Mané (£9.8m), who has outscored Salah in both Gameweeks so far and has matched him for shots in the box (six) and accurate ones too (four). So it’s no surprise to see the Senegalese international in the running for a third-place finish in the poll this week, with eight percent of the votes.

Expected to run Mané close for third place is Arsenal’s main man Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m). He is also around the eight percent mark ahead of an appealing fixture, this week at home to West Ham, even after blanking in the first two outings of 2018/19. Those backing Aubameyang may well be members of the Salah-less 45 percent who are worried about Aguero’s place in the Man City side.

Benjamin Mendy (£6.2m) completes the poll’s current top five after continuing his fine start to the season against Huddersfield. The Manchester City defender has four assists in his first two matches and has touched the ball in opposing final thirds more often than anyone else in his classification.

"We have a very strange 4-5-1 formation with Sadio as a midfielder, Bobby [Roberto Firmino] being a midfielder more or less and Mo [Salah] being a striker, even though he plays in a little different position"

It means the positions Salah takes up in and around the box and usually being the furthest forward in terms of average position mean he's effectively playing as an auxiliary striker/

Those 3 basically play in a diagonal line.

Mane deepest & interacting a bit more with the midfield (roughly in line in terms of pitch position with where you'd traditionally find a classic #10 like Sigurdsson when he played for Swansea for example, but just wider on the left).

Firmino next. In the middle so would be classified as a CF in a nominal formation line-up, but he's usually just further advanced than Mane & leads the press in the top third - usually stands near the DM of most teams, which is perhaps a little different to other CFs.

Then Salah - usually furthest forward but playing wide-right.

I think that's generally what JK is alluding to here.

Mané is still a really good option though, he's carried his form from the end of last season into this one, he has the potential to score in or around 20 goals, his last 2 seasons have been marred by injuries and lack of form coming off of those injuries.

I agree. I have both and think both are great.

I just dont get it when people compare Salah and Mo as if they play similar positions. They dont!

I think it's two of them. Seems unlikely that Ramsey will play in the double pivot and I think Emery would want more pace on one of the flanks.

Struggling to put team value to the back of my head.......travelling well so far (about 27k), but seeing a potential drop for both King and Coleman vs a potential rise for Alonso and Ings makes me want to take a hit! Need to stay strong and resist....

Reason why this is even a question is that in the event of no clean sheet for both (likely), Patricio chances of save points is higher.

It's not rotation per se, just United coming up against one of the best sides in the land, vs Hamer playing a side that look like they could go until Christmas without scoring.

It's at least worth considering *this week* tbh.

Well if you sort the fixture ticker by difficulty from GW5 onwards then Arsenal come out on top ( a nice sea of blue 🙂 ), followed by Man City, Spurs and Man Utd. Liverpool got a bad run and are near the bottom.

Not sure I’d be confident in Arsenal putting West Ham to the sword - is Mkhi enough arsenal until we see more?

It's what I'm going with as would be a -4 to get Auba in. Hoping Mkhi is enough but I'm fighting trigger finger today!

I think they'll make several good chances - that WH backline and DM is poor. Backing them to score 3.

      My bench:

      Fab, Bednarek, Peltier, Stephens.

You may think, however, that this allows me to have a enviably deluxe team. You would, however, be wrong.

Is it fair to compare a 7.0 & a 9.8? Mané every day of the week
Firmino out before his best fixture of the season, bar Cardiff home?

Surely you have to compare form and run of games over price? Arsenal have a good run of fixtures with Mikhi playing well at the weekend. I'm just unsure if this is his form picking up and continuing or a one off.

Firmino is playing too far back for my liking and whilst he may accrue assists, is he going to get a regular look in for goals with the likes of Salah and Manè on the pitch?

It's terrifying to go without Salah this GW but I'll have to as it would take a -8 hit to bring him in now.

I'll have to captain Aguero or Mane. Neither is too good of a choice.

He always does this. Goes a few weeks without a goal and then gets on a run. I think he's one of those players you have to be patient with or not have at all.

      I'll sell in any case.

If he blanks vs Brighton then he's out, and if he hauls then he repaid the faith and we're even but I'm still selling.

It seems to me he's the least advanced member of the offensive trio, it's Mane and Salah who come in from the wings as two strikers while Bobby stays back on the number 10 position.

Undoubtedly, because Coutinho isn't here anymore.

Thanks, I agree with your analysis. And it's so frustrating watching him in Liverpool games when my ML is chocka with mane owners. Seemed fine without cout last half season but something seems to have changed in the setup.

looks like he's removed from the box (stats might prove me wrong!) just from what I've seen... seems to drop off & open space well but that doesn't = FF points.

could easily change! wouldn't take a hit to lose him but may use FT if I had him
