Our panel of Fantasy Premier League managers are back to answer more questions, this time ahead of Gameweek 4.

We may have one Gameweek 3 match left to play, with Manchester United hosting Tottenham Hotspur in Monday Night Football, but there are still plenty of talking points.

That includes who managers should replace the suspended Richarlison (£6.7m) with, the dilemma of the Manchester City midfield and whether or not we should be looking to differentials yet.

Once again, we had an overwhelming response to our request for questions. Unfortunately, we can only answer a handful each week but keep your queries coming in for the rest of the season.

Here’s a reminder of who is on the panel for your Gameweek 4 Question Time:

Chief #FPL Manager – This man has finished inside the top one percent six times in his career as a Fantasy manager and is one of the biggest influencers in the FPL Twitter-sphere.

Ben McNair – Australian FPL manager Ben has four finishes inside the top 5,000 so far and is an expert in all things metrics-related.

Az – Finished in the top 1,000 last season and is a regular on the ScoutCast and Scout Picks article.

QUESTION ONE – CHIEF

Should I sell Richarlison for the two Gameweeks he’s suspended or bench him? And if I sell him, which players are the best replacement options?

Chief: “I think it makes sense to sell Richarlison before Gameweek 4, rather than benching him. His straight red card on Saturday means that he’s due to receive a three-game ban, which means he won’t be available for Premier League selection until 23rd September.

“I have no doubt that his price will drop more than once over the next fortnight as FPL managers look to fill a key attacking void in their teams.

“In terms of a replacement, two names spring to mind.

Roberto Pereyra is viable as he has scored three goals in three matches but he has some tricky upcoming matches.

“With that said, the fixture run seems more generous for Theo Walcott and he’s also racked up three attacking Fantasy returns, despite having created fewer chances and having fewer shots on goal than the Watford man since Gameweek 1.”

QUESTION TWO – BEN MCNAIR

Is it worth getting in players who have really low ownership to try and make up lost points over first three weeks? What do you look for with these poorly owned players? Do you take risk before form and favourable fixtures?

Ben: “Ignore ownership. Ignore overall ownership. Ignore ownership in your forum/social media bubble. Whatever deficit you could be facing after three Gameweeks is easily recoverable over the remaining 35. Get the players you think will score the most points. Other managers will make mistakes. The ‘template’ will change over time. Play like you’re in front.

“When considering the rank impact of a ‘differential’ relative to a ‘template player’ with slightly higher expected points, think of a bell curve with an average just to the left of zero. Don’t let your eyes be lit up by the shiny area under the curve to the right of zero, which represents a lower-than-50% chance of a ranking boost, without sober recognition of the larger area to the left of zero, which represents a greater-than-50% chance of a ranking tumble. This also makes for great chat at dinner parties.

“Differentials can be fun, but, if you’re interested in results alone, I don’t think there’s much of a case for getting them until after Gameweek 30. Make your peace with having highly-owned heavy hitters, because if you don’t have the leader of the captain poll in most weeks, you’re in for a train wreck of a season.”

QUESTION THREE – AZ

Last year it was worth having a Man City midfielder even if they missed the odd game. Given Guardiola’s diversity of choice, is it best, in fact, to avoid completely and go for two at the back with Aguero up-front?

Az: “For the first part of this question, I really don’t think we have the wealth of options that it would seem from the City midfield.

“Mahrez and Sane are both premium priced players who do not currently have the backing of Pep, so are automatically out, as while we could potentially handle a premium priced City player who misses the odd game, nothing from the start of the season suggests that these two will be first XIers anytime soon.

“That leaves Sterling and the two Silvas as our main considerations.

“Sterling seems likely to play most games, but his price tag puts me off hugely and, while I think he has a part to play in our seasons, other premium-priced options (Salah, Hazard, Mané, Aguero) are more appealing.

“Bernardo Silva seems to be a victim of his own versatility, we never quite know where he is going to play but for 7.6, I think you can make a case for including him, just don’t expect to see him set the world alight.

“I think Peps favourite, David Silva, seems a fantastic option though, and for 8.5 I think he could be a set and forget in your midfield as he seems likely to play most games and showed against Huddersfield that he can run the show and pull all the strings in De Bruynes absence.

“I think you can also make a case for considering Gündogan at 5.5. He may not be a guaranteed starter but when he does play, does take set pieces and does have a good eye for goal. For the price, he may be worth the risk.

“I am not personally a fan of doubling up at the back with City, 5.5 just seems too much to spend on a goalkeeper, especially when you consider how well the premium priced defenders are scoring.

“Ederson has barely any chance of getting any bonus, makes few saves and I do wonder about City’s clean sheet potential with their chopping and changing of the backline.

“A cheap goalkeeper and a premium defender (such as Alonso) wins out over Ederson and a sub £6.0m defender for me.

“An expensive keeper also leaves you quite inflexible, and I feel like FPL is in total flux at the moment, so being able to change with the times is so important and every million is so valuable.”

For those who are upgrading Mane to Hazard this week, are you waiting for Manes price to rise before doing so to bank the extra 0.1 million? My only problem is that Hazard looks like rising in value tonight while Mane has been hovering around the 93 mark on FPL statistics for the past few days. What to do?

Hazard will rise tonight so if you're getting rid of Mane for him you basically have to do it tonight because of the price rises

      1. MysticMac17

Yeah I understand Hazard will rise tonight, but so too should Mane before the end of the week? So I'm wondering if it would be better to sell Mane now for 9.6 and buy Hazard at 10.5, or sell Mane later in the week at 9.7 and buy Hazard at 10.6?

        1. DR0GBA
          • 9 Years

Better to buy Hazard at 10.5 because then you will already have the rise in 10.6 tomorrow so he would only have to rise once again to make profit.

Whereas if you buy him at 10.6 then he'll need to rise to 10.8 until you make profit rather than 10.7

If you're 100% going to do the transfer this week then tonight is the best time

Is it though? Have had Mane from the start, has increased by 0.3, and I just need one more increase to gain 0.1 from selling him. If Hazard goes up from 10.6 to 10.8 during the coming weeks, I'd have made more money. Otherwise Id need Hazard to rise from 10.5 to 10.9 to match that

It doesn't matter if Mane rises, what matters when he rises and since they both rise at the same time you'll still be paying the same amount of money going from Mane to Hazard

But if you do it earlier then you catch the first price rise of Eden

Definitely on pens, main threat and 2 "easy" home games.

Whereas Mane is streaky as we know, gets hooked after 60 mins, not on pens and tougher fixtures - Id say its an upgrade, short term at least.

Very much agree with this. Have started the season with Mane last two years. He always starts well and then his output drops or he gets injured. Hazard's record against Bournemouth is incredible, and he could easily get a brace against Cardiff too who are woeful. Captain option for both matches unlike Mane.

One option I am considering (on a WC) is to go with both and sacrifice Salah. I will likely only captain Salah 2x in the next 5 gameweeks (Leicester and Southampton) anyway. If Mane can score 6ppg and Hazard 6ppg over the next five weeks, that's 60 points for me, even if Salah scores 7ppg, I would need to find a 5ppg 7M player to make up the difference, and that looks unlikely...

Better to bank Mane's rise surely, if you think he's definitely going to rise before the deadline. You have more time to assess injuries & team news, plus there's also a chance Hazard's price doesn't rise beyond 10.6 (injuries, red card, bad form etc.)

Thanks all for the feedback at the top of previous page. Still can't decide if I want to drop Auba though lol, at least until after the cardiff game (on WC just now).

If I drop him, I can still get Mhki, and can afford and play Trippier Mitro over benching Bennett Kamara - this does cause a benching headache though.

But also if I drop him and he then goes on a scoring spree for the coming fixtures.. well, yeah.

If I keep on WC for now and he fails again vs Cardiff, I can do the same proposed moves with another week or two's knowledge and games.

Thoughts for anyone, especially in the same position?

Can't see it happening at all. Given Zidane's strengths during his tenure at Real, and the reason he left, neither him or utd are good fit for each other imo.

Utd problems are not just that though. Zidane is no master tactician, defense is still rubbish. More importantly, I don't think he's gonna want to manage Utd at its current state, he'd better hold off for a star-studded team like PSG or Bayern imo.

Depends on what his performance clauses are in his contract and what they will have to fork out to get rid of him. I suspect that they won't do anything until they see how the first few games go in Champions League. Worst case, gone by October. Possible case, gone by December. Probable case, gone by end of season (unless ManU win/draw 32 of the next 36 matches).

They need a football director, a person that knows football and can manage the marked who can function as a middle man between Mourinho and Woodward. Mourinho is a good manager, tactically one of the best. Looking at the squad he has available which is good but have some glearing faults and weaknesess to i athink he did quite good last year (2place in the league). % centerbacks who are mediocre at best, quite old right back with no deputy, a converted midfielder as left back and few others than Matic and Pogba centrally good enough, plus i have doubts about Lukaku, i think he is good but he also is quite limited in certain areas which kind of limits the way they play. Not as good as Kun, Firmino, Kane, Auba both deemed in quality but also in that he offers nothing defensively, which the the other strikers does. But pointing at individual quality is not really my purpose here, it´s more that the entire squad is not flexible enough, like City and Liverpool whom have several types of player that possess qualities that differs from one another so they have several strings to play at.

I agree they need a football director. However, I disagree to some extent about Lukaku. He is a perfect fit in Mourinho's system, however he is limited (as a footballer) in this system. You just have to look at the way he played for Belgium, particularly when he was a right winger against Brazil. You either buy the players to fit Mourinho's system, or you get rid of him if you want a more modern style of football like City/Liverpool/Chelsea.

playing well against panama and tunisia in wc (and national temas are of lower quality than the best teams in PL) doesn´t count in my book, as it actually kind of backing my thinking that he´s not good enough a player to play for a top 6 team in PL. He can play as right winger but that was vs marcelo ho constantly leaving is place so must be put in perspective that one as well. He does posses quality, my trouble with him is that in some crucial ares he is not good enough, as his first touch, his lack of defensive attributes (Mourinho used to love playing with strikers that also runs their socks of) and as well as he as a counter attacker he´s very limited when teams backing down, which teams in the lower region of table usually does against top teams. His record against the other top teams speaks for itself. One can always blame Uniteds attacking style, but as i´ve said, that is also partly because the limitation Lukaku brings to the team imo. The team have to play at his strenghts which kind of leave Young pumping balls in from the left, which is kind of what they did 40 years ago-)

I can afford to take a -4 after my start I think (ranked in the top 1k). This would be a move for 3-4 weeks at least, so I should make those points back fairly quickly if the move works out.

Really was rushed to do my transfers last minutes to afford before price changed with -8 hit. Maybe wasn't the right move. This is my current team. What do you think? Playing 4-3-3 this week

            Hennessey-(Hamer)
            Mendy-Robertson-Alonso-WB-(Bennett)
            Salah-Mikhi-Pedro-(Cairney-stephens)
            Aguero-Auba-Zaha

WB will rotate with Bennett and cairney according to fixtures

Interestingly I have a similar dilemma. Spend -8 last night in a crazy bid to avoid Alonso's price rise, but now regretting decision....I think. Had already done Rich to Wally, then last night swapped out Shaw and Firmino for Alonso and Arnie for -8.

I think your team looks really good, and can't see a problem. Guess we have to have the courage of our convictions....

I'll post my team on next page. Would appreciate your thoughts

            Which of these to choose?
            1) Rich + Firmino -->Hazard + Ings (-4)
            2) Rich -->Walcott
            3) Rich --> Pedro
            4) Rich --> Madison

Hazard looked ready to explode but that means losing Firmino. Although after LEI he has tough road ahead

            Walcott Spoiler Alert
I appreciate 6.6m for a midfielder that has scored 2 goals with good fixtures is appealing, especially in an supposably attacking team. The Stats however suggest Everton shot percentage is low and Walcott in particular has only had 4 shots in 3 games. - I think there are better options for a Richarlison stop gap. His conversion rate is good though can't argue with that.

Depending what Eriksen does tonight I may just transfer him out for Walcott, giving me enough money left over to do Peltier to Alonso.

This would mean playing a 442 with a premium back four of Robinson, Alonso, Mendy and PVA.

            My current team is:

            Patricio
            Robinson | Mendy | PVA
            Pedro | Salah | Mane | Eriksen | Fraser
            Aguero | Mitrovic

            Norris | AWB | Kamara | Peltier

Does the above move sound ok? It would require a -4

Think Wolves will go on a good run after last week. They were unlucky in the first few weeks. Besides Bennett in defence, I would have Jimenez as their second best option so yeah. Its between him and Ings in that price bracket and Jimenez is a more assured starter so maybe he just gets the nod.

If FPL changed the impact of price falls occurring below a players Purchase Price, to match the algorithm for value gained – so that for every 0.2 that a players value dropped below the original PP, only 0.1 would be lost – would this help curb fire sales and dampen the early season enthusiasm to offload GW1 and 2 flops.

Knowing that you could hold onto players like Arnautovic who might drop to 6.9 this week, without losing Sale Value would be great for encouraging greater mindfulness in squad management, and of course, less knee jerking. Especially in ‘this’ FPL world where we have a very good idea where the rises and falls are going to occur.

Yes. Way too much volatility at the beginning of the season. And the reason there is volatility in the first few GWs is because people are interested in the first month and then after then there is a massive drop off in active players.

Price rises and falls should be tempered in the first month IMO.

Plenty great FPL managers adapting to this by using an early WC each season now, which inevitably leads to a hunky chunk of TV, but is it really best for the game, creating a clear 'way' to play?

                    I agree with this.
Every manager is free to play WC early and be aggressive with hits and chasing value.
I don’t think the game needs to dictate a certain way of playing.
And I prefer to let the free market decide without involvement.

I Think I might have misunderstood you’re Point...

Don’t you Think it would be cheating an even “clearer way” to play if everyone was sure not lose value on players for the first few GWs.
Surely fewer people would opt for an early WC and aggressive transfers.

It's similar in a way to the tactic of saving your chips for double game weeks. It's becoming an inherent advantage playing an early wildcard from a value aspect to the extent that many now plan for this pre-season. Is this really the prescriptive direction we want the game to take, whereby it's a genuine risk to stick with your preseason picks beyond the opening couple of weeks. For me, the suggestion above 'could' lead to greater variance in strategy, by dampening the market to a degree.

Good point actually, although I am not so certain it’s alway an advantage. I usually Keep it for longer and use for setting up the busy holiday program and early DGW etc planning - and always have it in my pockey if something goes horrible wrong with my team.
Yes, I tend to start out slow, But usually flying up the ranks later in the game.
Either way, I think the repercussions of changing the system will be far to great. TV will be even higher and that will dent the essence of the game imo.

Yes it would definitely help curb fire sales. For me personally, I'm very protective of maintaining a high team value so much so that when I see a player go down in value, I tend to sell unless I think that he can make the price drop back with an increase. Additionally, its harder to make that loss back (assuming they dont rise in value following the price fall) since we need a player to rise by 0.2. The main reason I played my wildcard last week (like Mark) was to ride the market and protect the price falls (like King) while jumping on the price risers (such as Aguero, Alonso and Mkhi).

If you have a player at lets say 7.0, and he drops to 6.9, he only needs to get back to 7.0 to get a selling value of 7.0. This would also be the case if the player dropped to 6.7. He would only need to get back to 7.0 to get a selling value of 7.0.

Needing 0.2 rises to make money is only appliccable when a player rises above your purchase value. Meaning the 7.0 player needs to hit 7.2 to be able to sell the player for 7.1, or 7.4 to sell for 7.2, 7.6 to get 7.3 and so on.....

While it's silly not to agree with the points over pounds standpoint, having a high team value increases the possibility of having the players who score the points.

The expensive players are expensive for a reason - they are expected to deliver a greater amount of points. Therefore, a high team value is necessary to be able to have as many of these as possible.

I thought this was obvious - but some people can only see 1 step ahead 😆

                    True.
but the market ahead of the season, at the start of the season and the middle/end of the season are different things.

the market ahead of the season have players priced largely based on what they did last season. players going up and down the first couple of weeks is only reflecting who did well and who did bad the first few weeks. Its only when we have a large amount of games and data that we can justly evaluate which expensive players are worth their salt, and who are'nt. Which means a player that experienced an initial fall, might end up being one of the biggest riser of the season. Firmino and Sterling last season where great examples.

I know most will disagree with me on this, but I enjoy the volatile price market.
Not that I’m encouraging knee jerking or price changing at all, but I think it adds another dimension to the game you have to take into consideration.
You have to decide whether or not to take some risks in making early transfers and whether or not to keep a potential faller.
If they changed to rules to what you suggest, it would lead to much higher team Values towards the end of the season - which isn’t something I’d particular fancy.
That being said, I am always doing quite poorly in terms of TV, but I do enjoy that aspect of the game.
And yes, I am very annoyed if Arnie will drop, but will still keep if fit.

I've got Arnie being nowhere near a drop, and providing he gets unflagged on fri- should be fine

Arnie was just an example to illustrate the point.
Not suggesting he will drop by any means if he gets a clean bill of health come Friday.
Currently -13% (-0.4% per hour) on FFFix and -20% on FPLstats.
Richarlison or Ozil might be better examples of players predicted to fall fairly imminently.

Dont like this one bit.. Dont change what is not broken.. it is good that players value goes down so you can buy them at the right time on the cheap.. just tweaking to protect value isnt the way to go..

I like the system as it is. No need to change it in my opinion. Just adapt your playing style to deal with it.

If you're doing this, which I agree with, why not have all the 0.1ms realised and have drops happen half as quickly? So basically every 0.1 rise or fall is felt but they happen less often.

I feel like it's become extremely knee-jerky for the beginning of the season

You can't really hold onto non-performers for more than a week since they tend to be dropped by the community rather quickly for the next bandwagon for fear of price drops. It's a double whammy because not only will you miss out on the price rises, but you'll also suffer a direct hit from price falls.

This inevitably leads to template teams forming quite early on in the season and it punishes non-template ideas rather severely.

There is a very tangible benefit for those in my ML who WC'd and have a high TV built up at the beginning of the season. Points over pounds but with an extra 0.5-1.0 more than others for 30+ weeks goes a long way.

If a price drop worked in the same way as a price rise and your player falls in value by .2, you could sell that player and them buy him back for .1 less than what you sold them for. I guess this is why price changes don’t work the same way.
